Demo, love the image of Chief Franklin Bean there. I assume he's a villain to your regular characters?

Nerdy art critique tymes:

Dig the line quality. Nice thick, smooth lines on the outer edges of objects with smaller, but equally clean defining lines instead. It's amazing what a simple thing like varying line thickness can do to an illustration and this picture proves it.

Love the limited color palette as well. Using subdued colors with a single bright spot color can really attract the eye. You use it to good effect with the cigarette, but if there's one critique, I wonder if it couldn't be pushed even a little farther.

Consider what the image would look like with a bit larger of a glow on the end of the cigarette. The small size, while realistic, does cause the orange spot to get a bit lost. Also, as a graphic design dork, I also like strong elements to be repeated in any image to promote unity. Maybe a glowing cinder in the ash tray as well? Simply a thought.

DemoWeasel
01-19-2011, 12:03 PM
Well thanks! Bean is actually part of a semester-long project for my Character Design class. We had to think of a story with characters we think are great, then redesign them to fit a different genre/time period/etc. In my case, I went with making Fantastic Mr. Fox into a 1940s-type noirish heist movie. I can post the other four here if you're interested in 'em.

There are a few tiny things off with the Bean picture (I can count at least one tangent and the lineart on his left index finger makes me sad), but if have time during the semester I'll fix those and put some embers in the ash tray.

Demo, this is seriously great and I really want to watch whatever short/cartoon episode/movie it's part of. Did you do the voice, or someone you know?

DemoWeasel
02-23-2011, 09:24 PM
The voice is a clip from Psychonauts! I was able to find some .wavs of the character's lines and thought this would be the most fun to work with.

whoa whoa, why did latex glove man become general generic? I also liked how the brutish guy was a little more hangdog in the first set, otherwise they're going nicely.

The other members in the group felt Glove Man was a little too silly for our story, so we just kind of settled on making him a more generic hero called "The Ability."

Brutish guy is actually the Ability's secret identity, and I really liked the casual design for him one of the other group members worked out.

I really like how expressive the rest of his motions are too, in tandem with the sync'ed mouth. I mean, I could imagine it's a standard requirement for an animator -- but still, it's pretty impressive & worth respect.

I'm gonna get away with saying your mad scientist gets MAD PROPS, thereby dooming your character to a hamfisted rap sequence

It's currently going through the (strangely intimidating) clean-up process.

Also, [nitpick] the grip's too small on that sword-if he can fit his entire hand on that it's not by much. French grips are more like twice that long.

That kind of amuses me just because with my background, I might consider trying to make a CG model if I needed a reference for how to build something out of Sculpey... ;)

(Well, not really, modelling isn't my specialty, though I've dabbled in it long ago.)

OK, someone had to ask it one of these days-

What's up with all the body suits all the time?

DemoWeasel
01-06-2012, 12:29 AM
Well, Updown Patrol agents are part of a costumed group of not-so-super heroes tasked with handling threats to the city deemed too dangerous for normal police to deal with.

This includes would-be supervillains like Dr. Stunkov.

The costumes are more than just for show; MICROCHIPS give them a protective functionality similar to what you'd find in something like Power Rangers or... I don't know what else.

They don't do that Super Sentai henshin thing.

Besides, you could conceivably get away with more violence with sparks in place of blood (for the most part) in something aimed at a TV-PG audience.

I could go into it some more, but it's more of a technical world-building thing than something that drives the Updown Town story forward, and it seems like more or less something folks would be willing to accept at face value were it to be playing in front of them on a tubescreen.

The maquette from your blog post is rad as hell. Hopefully you do go back and finish it eventually.

I'm kind of expecting that shark to sell me some fanTAStic products that no home should be without.

Step-right-up-step-right-up and see how the fine en-gee-neers of the ocean can improve YOUR life sir!

So you're saying he's an aquatic Vince Offer?

Because I am so in love with this concept.

I'm not sure! I'm not very good at coming up with interesting page layouts, but it'd be fun to do something like that when I have some free time.

If Updown Town was a game, what sort of game would it be?

Most likely a multiplayer beat-em-up or a 2D platformer!

Well, I'm working on some stuff for a 1940s take on the Bluebeard story in my Visual Development class.

I'll most likely clean these two up later, though I wonder if Wifey has too much junk in her trunk. Also, I just now noticed the boob tangent and incorrect glove contour on her right arm. HOORAY!

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c87/OrangeFox0/HouseConcepts3.jpg

These are some house concepts I'm working on. I'm trying to combine a regular-ass 1940s upper class deal with Orson Welles' giant castlemansion from Citizen Kane. I haven't really touched perspective for backgrounds in quite a while, but I'd say I'm warming back up to it fairly well.

If I ever see glaring tangents in my own stuff, I fix them, but I wonder how big a deal it is for the most part. Like, I wouldn't go back and redo something if I noticed an odd tangent somewhere. That probably marks me as lazy to some people, but on the other hand, you know who I hear obsessing over tangents? Art students and people on the internet who don't draw. Nobody else in the universe cares. You could probably draw a character that was all tangents and 99.95% of the population of Earth wouldn't see anything wrong. But then I see people on art forums who delight in pointing them out.

Wifey's facial expression plus beauty mark are great. You just know she's about to crack wise or purr a seductive remark.

I had to look it up myself, nich (and this is after taking "AP art" classes in high school!), in short it seems to be when things look weird as lines disappear into or interact with each other in specific ways. I'm guessing this one is how the boob line hides the arm line completely

Tangents just kind of flatten out parts of images! They're not a huge deal, but I'd rather not have any.

Do you ever look at your designs in silhouette? Maybe that would help eliminate tangents.

DemoWeasel

Of course! I'm not saying I'm bad at identifying them or whatever, they just tend to sneak up out of nowhere sometimes and you don't realize it until well after you're done.

I didn't learn about tangents until a teacher pointed them out to me in my junior year of art school. And that was an interactive art/web design teacher. Which shows you the kinds of people who enjoy pointing them out - none of my illustration teachers thought it was really worth going into.

I think people enjoy pointing it out because it's a relatively simple thing to see that lets you be really nitpicky on a technical level while not really having a lot of overall technical knowledge. It's like how people use/obsess over the term Death of the Author after hearing it in a class once, and then continuing to use it, and capitalize it, even when they're not talking about the Barthes essay. zing

There are plenty of folks at the college who take delight in pointing tangents out. I've just been trained to try and snuff 'em out of my own work as much as I can.

well, my teacher would tell us not to put objects in corners, and say thing like 'it draws your eye out of the picture' but wouldn't ever really explain why it happened, and when googling it earlier, it all become pretty clear. (at least, tangentially clear) It doesn't help you know how to compose, but at least it seems pretty solid help on how not to compose!

Other students and instructors will point out tangents during critiques in my classes, but nobody is a jerk about it. Its just another level of scrutiny we're supposed to subject our work to. Sometimes they can be signs of larger layout issues, so I'm learning to be more mindful of them myself.

That said, I find the idea of a tiger with a beard delightful.
