View Full Version : The Pixel Art Thread of Increasing Obsolescence

Good pixel art is hard to come by, these days. Most kids just throw crap together in MS Paint or something, devoid of technique, thinking just because it's jagged, it's pixel art. Well it's not.

Decent low-res art revolves mainly around rigid color management, and the understanding that every pixel is important. Once you've got that covered, you can more or less count on normal painting techniques, with only a few pixel-specific skills to master. (The smaller you go, for example, the more clicking on dots you'll be doing.)

A lot of the pixel art tutorials floating around will only give you a passing glance at technique, then spend most of their time trying to teach you how to whip MS Paint or Photoshop into service. But that's like pushing a truck down the road with your feet. There are better, purpose-built tools available that can take care of a lot of the legwork involved.

Graphics Gale (http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/) is good for making sprites. It offers basic palette management, pen tools, dithering modes, layer support, and built-in animation features. Support for importing and exporting gifs is strictly payola, but it can still export individual frames to png, so if you're crafty, it's a minor speed bump. Most people could use this program to replace MS Paint and never look back.

Grafx2 (http://code.google.com/p/grafx2/) is a more advanced suite of tools, like a modern version of Deluxe Paint. That's important, because DPaint was an industry standard tool in the old days, much like Photoshop is today. So it's pretty much got way more features than I can rattle off here. I will say this program is particularly good for building and managing palettes, and painting backgrounds. It's also totally free.

Feel free to share your pixel art in this thread, guys. I'd love to see some good ones.

Can't think of a reason not to!

Here's a few things I drew a while back.

http://www.nightofthemeteor.com/gallery/char-jim-highlight.pnghttp://www.nightofthemeteor.com/gallery/char-jim-south1.png
Jim, from my comics, seen here channeling Bernard in an early adventure game concept sprite.

http://www.nightofthemeteor.com/gallery/bg-outsidejims.png
An unfinished scene from said adventure game, depicting the sad little shack that is Jim's home. I stopped working on it after I realized it's better to actually have the game playable first. Tried to use Day of the Tentacle's wacky exploded perspectives, and accidentally created a mess that doesn't even have perspective.

http://www.nightofthemeteor.com/gallery/captain-vga-f.png
I have no idea who this is. He was supposed to be a dapper pirate, but he looks more like Zanthia's buffoonish sidekick in a red outfit.

http://www.nightofthemeteor.com/gallery/q-borg.png
This was somebody else's character. I drew this sprite just going by the concept art he'd posted on another forum, and posted it for him. I don't think he ever did anything with it, though. Looks like it could be an Earthbound enemy.

http://www.nightofthemeteor.com/gallery/DoR_Link1.png
Somehow I managed to draw the two most popular versions of Link you'll find in Zelda Classic. This is the one I don't hate. Last time I checked, it's still the one everybody's using.

So this is Talking Time eh? Hello! Thanks for the intro Brickypoos.

Pixel art is awesome. I've been pixelling for nearly 10 years now. It's a timeless art and I hope it stays relevant in some form or other (thankfully it's passed into the trendy niche now so it's currently "cool" to have pixel art games... to a degree.)

Anyway, my pixels:

I honestly don't like to preach my methods as if they were something that's a sure fired hit and make everyone a pixel master or anything - the way I work is rather unconventional and set in my own ways (for large pixel images I work mainly in Paint Shop Pro 9 - definitely NOT any of the ones post-Corel takeover - and for animation I use a freeware application called TileStudio (http://tilestudio.sourceforge.net/), which isn't even an animation package!)

Being that I am a games designer I get plenty of practice at pixel art in my job, but initially I started out with RPG Maker and worked from there. There was a lot of paying attention to the pixel art in games that inspire you the most (for me, it was Squaresoft's 16-bit RPGs that inspired me the most, as well as action titles like Metal Slug and Shiny Entertainment games from said generation). I have also been very keen on traditional animation, and find that I can express myself animation-wise best with pixel art, without having to worry so much about cleaning up lines and insanely lengthy times working on a drawing board.

All I can really offer for advice is, take a good, long look at the stuff that inspires you the most. See how they interpret things, look at how they use colours and shapes and movement and perspective, and really break it down to its basic parts so you can fix it together in a way you like. Grab samples of the work from anywhere you can, do some heavy research on the consistency of styles, learn from their mistakes if you can. There are lots of different ways to draw pixel art as there is any other kind of art, so it's good to really get to know the stuff you like the most and draw inspiration from it.

A really good website that I spent year on training my skill is Pixelation's (http://www.wayofthepixel.net/) forums - they may come across as snobby and intimidating with some of their amazing pixel art, but in truth they have been extremely helpful, with activities designed to help you understand the basics of pixel art for games and graphic design purposes and in depth look at professional artists' works in classic games.

They'd all need work thrown in to clean them up, but they were also designed to be made as easily as possible so I would go in sane with the crazy amount of attacks I'd have to animate (there was still 2-4 more normal moves to animate, then 3 way more involved 'special' attack animations and then a ton of other assorted things).

Now the plan is to make the game 3d so I might use these to work out key frames and stuff.

Yeah, but it's also hard to jump like 30 feet in the air in armor. Plausibility isn't the hugest factor. Though it doesn't matter anyways because this is silly sprite land, they're supposed to at least be thicker heels, not stilettos. (Though I did draw them as stilettos in the concept art. I must have been lazy. :| )

Thanks man. But as a guy who tries to make games, I gotta think pragmatically. I agree with you, great 2d sprites has a distinct charm, but with the amount of animation I have to deal with (also: I have two other characters to do), 3d, coupled with the current best free tool (unity) being much better suited for 3d just points me in that direction. I might though make use of some sprite based enemies. Making a 3d model is great when you're dealing with lots of animation but becomes less time efficient when you're dealing with say, some stupid ghoul or something that, as a sprite, would have 2 frames of animation. :P

But yeah, unfortunately spriting isn't my number 1 focus (that's just design in general) so I can't hope to live up to the amazing work of some people (though it won't stop me from trying).

Hmm... in the standing pose, I'd pull the (camera) right shoulder pad in a little, and not show the curvature on the left kneepad. Looks a little weird. Meanwhile, on the walking pose, the sword seems to have kind of grown and eaten the forearm... need to extend things past the elbow a little. And on the walking pose, the hair really shouldn't be blowing back like that at that speed, and you inverted the cape colors. Looks pretty nice otherwise though.

They were an entry to be an "alternate skin" for Samus in Metroid Prime 2D a la the Fusion Suit in the original Metroid Prime. I figured you kind of had to keep the shoulderpads as part of the aesthetic. Clearly the arm cannon had to stay in some form because it'd still be being used.

(The black one was supposed to be a robed?, shadowy figure, iirc, the grey, blocky one more of a "death-knight" variation on skeleton-samus, so wearing plate armour sort of thing)

Here's Hiryu's future-retro ninja glider thing from Strider.

http://www.snowy-day.net/grokyou/hiryu/striderhiryuopgliderx4.png

I showed this to Lady back in October 2010, and she said that while it looks cool, it's a shame it doesn't actually animate. So I slid the top of Hiryu's head back in one frame to make his hair look windblown, put a rudimentary glow in that cute little lamp, and made the whole thing just drift up and down for good measure.

http://www.snowy-day.net/grokyou/hiryu/striderhiryuopgliderallisonspecialx4.gif

Now, I completely forget about all this until this morning, when I found the file amidst some maintenance. Looking at it again after so long, I thought I could easily improve on it. So I did.

http://www.snowy-day.net/grokyou/hiryu/striderhiryuopgliderasv2x4.gif

I'm looking forward to coming back to this in another eighteen months, when I'll add more frames and animate the glider tilting or something.

Cloth set for the VX Ace Generator (one of the main actor outfits). Since imgur autorenames things, you'll want to rename it to Cloth33.png and stick it in your VX Ace's folder (Program Files\Enterbrain\RPGMakerVXAce\Generator\Mini\Male ). It's numbered sequentially with the others Luna from the RPGMaker forums already converted. Just working on brushing up on my sprite editing skills for the latest contest.

ETA: Just gonna toss these up as I do them in this post, probably.

This one is for the ladies (so it goes in Mini\Female instead), and it's proper name is Cloth32.png

I had a sprite comic on there for a while.
I'll bite: Which one? I read B&G, along with a good chunk of the subcomics and fancomics, for a couple years back in the day.

It was called Journeys. It was on B&G for a couple months before it was moved to CaptainN.net.

My character even had a cameo in Author Wars.

EDIT: Blarg page'd blarg

Second Edit: Thought I'd post some of my RPG Maker 2000 stuff. Maybe it'll be useful to people in the RPG Maker contest thing Dart's running. This is from my RPG Maker campaign, based in the same universe as said comic. Sadly the game was lost when my old computer crashed. People should feel free to consider these free to use!

Robot master designs: Launch Man, Steam Man, Mirror Man, and Glue Man. (I was fooling around with the idea of making a game with these, but I quickly dropped that.)

http://www.slimesalad.com/files/64d-monsters2.png

RPG monster designs using a limited color palette (I think the lizardman has the most at 6 + transparency). The eagle is terrible and the first iteration of the lizard is terrible, and while the second version of the lizard isn't great, it has much better shading -- the tail in particular no longer looks like it's the size of its head.

http://www.slimesalad.com/files/GameBoy0000.png

This is all wrong... the power light is off! Actually, the larger problem is that the entire thing is too dark. Authentic as that may be, I was meaning to brighten up the screen display. The graphics are inspired by the FFL games.

May as well throw in my lot... I've done some minor spritework before, but it's only ever been static sprites. I did some fairly nice ones based on FF6 characters about 7 years ago (jeez, it's really been THAT long?), but I cheated a bit since I used official artwork as the baseline model.

So, I was making some sprite edits, as I'm apt to do...
http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mbz6qjlc1G1r9ffka.gif
and one of my friends brought up that I've done so many edits over the years that it's odd the only pixel creations I've made from scratch are a smattering of RPG Maker tiles. So, I decided, yeah, let's make an original sprite from scratch.

http://i.imgur.com/fhFHS.gif
I was actually planning on making something Mega Man X5 flavored, but it ended up decidedly more King of Fighters. Needs a little work still, but that'll wait until I get some more base animations done, and finalize her normal outfit, which I'm having trouble with.

http://i.imgur.com/ZaVbW.png
Probably should've come up with a more finalized design before I started. You can observe how I got dissatisfied with her face and redrew it on the second row (animation uses redrawn face). The last two are my favorites, but neither really satisfies me; one is too Battle Angel, the other too Space Marine?

And back on sprite edits, I guess I'll repost this guy:

I've been working on this pixel-y thing but I've kind of hit a roadblock in terms of shading and highlighting (the shading on the necklace I just kind of copied from the original art). I don't want it to be hyper-detailed or anything, I just think it should have some more depth to it. Anyone have links to tutorials for this sort of thing? Any critique would be appreciated!

Flat color for the most part:

As posted elsewhere, I've been working on a bunch of 16x16 tiles and units for a board game. Lately I've been messing around with some bigger stuff, like this guy and his little friend:

http://i.imgur.com/posV023.png

I haven't regularly drawn things in something like 13 or 15 years, but I'm finding that halfway decent low-res pixel art is within my ability. It's fun, and I'm trying to make a game for Nora out of it eventually.

With gold, or any metal, you really really benefit from using some pure white lighting highlights. Kinda like I have going on in the top row here, if you can make it out. (http://studioxia.com/moonserpent/pc-sprites-no-spoil.png) You don't need to go overboard with it, but a big ol' glarey patch on the amulet will help a lot.

I'd also toss at least a little shading in around the inside of the arms. You don't need to go all wrinkly cloth detailed, but once you start in with major contour shadows, see it through.

I'd also bring in some of the medium brown from the hair to add some more color depth. Quick sketch powers actiblah:

Definitely! There's so many little things I didn't even think about.

Here's some progress with some things sketched on. Worked on the hair situation and like where it's going now, but it still needs a lot of work. Need to touch up the pendant still, and bumble through the shading on the face.

I still gotta clean up the hair highlights, fix/figure out the shading on the face, then add a little animation to the eyes. I'm pretty proud of it, it's a start and I'm pleased as punch that I'm actually finishing something to completion for once.
