As you may or may not have noticed (http://tegsdumbart.blogspot.com/), I basically haven't drawn or written anything for a year. I think that associating art so much with my ex really ruined my desire to draw, along with finishing art college, breaking my tablet, and all the horrible shit that happened to me last year. But now, now I want to get back into it. It's what I used to want to do and I don't see whyI should let life stop me.

The problems:
-my skills have really atrophied.
-I don't have any instruction or routine practice anymore. And I'm not willing to go back to the college both for financial and personal reasons. I still have all my textbooks at least.

The solution:
I think I should have an excuse to do something regularly. I think a webcomic with a schedule would be the perfect way to get back into it, but suggestions are welcome. I've been just doodling character designs since last night.

I've been doing a once-a-week webcomic for the last six months while I finish up my graduate degree. The idea was to do one page strips during the semester, because school needed to come first, and three page strips during the breaks, so I could get used to the three-days-a-week schedule while working full time, but pull back when school started up again. The upside is it's a very lax schedule, so I can get a lot of practice in on the side (I still need lots of practice). The downside is I'm more or less guaranteed to never find an audience. I don't really mind, though, since this comic is just a way to purge out as many unconnected ideas as possible and just play around with comics before I lock myself in to the more ambitious comic I have planned. I highly recommend it.

td;dr - Start a weekly strip and move up from there.

Chu

Yeah, do a weekly webcomic. It'll keep you regular (teehee) but it's not too stressful to maintain. From personal experience I will say that you definitely can build an audience from once-a-week updates as long as you're consistent. No slacking! No missed updates! Go insaneHAVE FUN

But here's something I wish I had thought of before: try making a short story. Once I get more free time, that's what I want to do. You can have a comic that consistently updates every week, but try to keep it contained to a limited number of pages. 30, 100, whatever. It might be easier if you have a solid goal in mind, and then when you finish you can go around telling people to read your totally-complete, self-contained story. And then move on to the next thing. Just my two cents. Do as I say, not as I do, etc.

If you draw everyday you'll be back where you were inside a week. Even if you aren't willing to go to college again, you'll still want some kind of community. There might be figure drawing co-ops in your area. They're usually on the same day every week, only cost 10 dollars or so to attend, and are a great way to keep yourself practicing and thinking about art.

Another option is Illustration Friday (http://www.illustrationfriday.com/). They'll post your picture with a link back to your own site. A lot of people look at this site.

I fired up the scanner for the first time in ages, after spending all evening drawing. I only picked my favourite work. More may come. Two fanarts and an original thing.

Before you start asking why those Knot-Tops are hanging out on a wall, the cover is a direct homage to the below Blue Beetle #1, the first appearance of The Question. Each character was drawn individually (all of those knot-tops are actually in the comic, by the way) and then assembled and coloured in Photoshop; where backgrounds, foregrounds, text, and a veneer of crappy yellowed paper were added. There's some mistakes and I should have spent more time on the text, but it was a long process and I'm pleased with the result.

More thought went into this than you would think: I had to be certain that no two blocks with the same outline (red vs. white) touched, and I had to be certain that the outer edges were almost entirely made of white-outlined pieces so that it would stand out better.

Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Fox, Wolf, Falco, Snake, Sonic

I could definitely understand not wanting to throw the symmetry of the whole thing off.

If you felt like doing a separate pic, you could maybe do a spoof of the old "Indian Head" Test Card (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Head_test_card) that incorporates Teddie somehow.

Aw man. I swiped the idea from someone I found online who did the same thing, but I guess they only sell the new-style ones now.

I guess I could buy a bunch of cheap shitty bargain bin DS games? Or order generic ones from (http://www.amazon.com/Standard-Black-Nintendo-Empty-Replacement-VGBR14DSBK/dp/B0039ZQP02) elsewhere (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/NINTENDO-DS-Replacement-Game-Case-10-Pak-/390279779260#ht_1989wt_1163).

Yeah, awesome. Makes me wish I had the time/talent/drive to do the same for my boxless carts.
