Sorry for the total fail re: my Google Wave account, lol.

Also, the 24th is a Sunday, Umby.

Heron

Maybe he's posting from the year 2002!? Or we're nine years behind schedule.

Umby

Sorry. I adjusted the date because Karzac won't be here until Monday, and forgot to edit the date. My bad.

Since we have players in multiple time zones we should clarify that we are using Central Time. (We are still using CST, right Umby?)

Umby
04-23-2011, 10:16 AM
Yes, we're still on CST because I'm selfish and believe everyone is on CST.

Thanks for catching me on that!

Red Hedgehog

Sorry if I was obtuse before. My google wave address is redhedgehog [at] googlewave

Karzac

Are we PMing our orders to you Umby?

Umby
04-25-2011, 09:17 AM
This is correct. I can't see the orders in my PM until I click to open them, and I solemnly swear that I'm up to no good that I won't open them until the time to open them comes.

Also, all of you need to check your Waves. I'm currently trying to diplome with you all.

Red Hedgehog

Greetings fellow world leaders!

As Archduke of the grand states of Austria and Hungary, I wish to extend warmest greetings to you as the new century dawns. Surely it will be a time of a peace and prosperity for all our nations where we can work out our differences without conflict and be content with what we have. I look forward to tea and sausage with all of you.

Felicitations,
Archduke Arnold

Hey Umby, could you post a map with area names in the OP? This is getting really confusing.

Red Hedgehog

I like this map (http://www.crockford.com/wrrrld/diplomacy.html) because even though it only vaguely resembles Europe, it makes it very clear what units can move from one territory to the next.

Aaaahhhhh! That thing terrifies me. Here, let's post a real-looking map instead. (Borrowed from the first game thread)

I don't understand something. How could F Bot support F St Pete's if the former can't move into the latter's territory? And why did Moscow end up supporting nothing?

Red Hedgehog
05-23-2011, 11:13 PM
Bot can move to StP. Therefore it can support it. It doesn't matter that it can't move to the same coast as the unit already there, all that matters is if it can move there.

Moscow successfully supported Finland to St. Petersburg, but because the unit in St. Petersburg had one support, that wasn't enough to dislodge it.

Well, you could have held onto two centers. You probably thought it would have been a coin flip, but it turns out it would have been rather easy.

Also, unless we are playing a "build anywhere" variant, I'm pretty sure I don't get a build as I have no open home supply centers.

Ahem. I've been informed that lateness is to be allowed with orders here in the event of people being busy. I was not, however, informed that anyone would be busy. I received neither orders nor advance notice of lateness from France, Austria or Turkey.

I currently have the resolution ready without them, and so all currently-submitted orders have been locked. I am offering a one-day extension this time and this time only for France, Austria and Turkey to submit orders. On any subsequent turn, however, you will be all-held if you neither submit orders nor submit advance notice of your being late.

Am I crazy or doesn't Russia have four supply centres?

Tuesday or Wednesday doesn't matter for me. I'm Canadian. Our holiday is tomorrow (I'll still be able to get my build orders in on time though.)

Yes, you are crazy, silly Canadian.

But you're also right. Russia owns 4 supply centers and therefore has ONE (1) build.

Guys... I have no orders... did I miss something here?

Get them in ASAP, because if no one moves this turn I win, and that would be the cheapest crap ever.

I'm thinking that it might be time to throw in the towel. There doesn't really seem to be any way for us to stop you from winning, and Russia and Austria seem pretty busy anyway.

I'll agree. This game has run its course.

Word. I think at this point, the best the remaining powers could hope for is a draw and those are stupid, so I'd rather give it to England who played a good game. (And for me personally, there's no way I can expand at all without giving the game away so yeah.)

Very well, then. Thanks for the game, guys. I apologize for the lack of communication from me throughout; having my Wave account rather strangely disappear didn't exactly help matters... you see, I'm normally much more talkative. This was a pretty tactical exercise.

Good game, guys!

Alright. To start the debriefing, I'm going to say that my failed support order in the Spring of 1904 and letting myself get played by Turkey in the Fall of 1905 were my two worst moves. I think things would have gone very differently if I had played better at those two points.

In any case, this was a lot of fun. I sort of lost interest at the end, but for a good two months this game was on my mind all the time. I really enjoyed it.

Umby

All right, I have a log of about the first two or three years worth of moves. Let's see how useful it is:

"Spring 1901:
F St. Petersburg to Gulf of Bothnia
A Warsaw to Ukraine
A Moscow to Sevastopol
F Sevastopol to Armenia

The plan here is that I will at first fool Austria into thinking that I am attacking Turkey by making an aggressive move against Turkey. Similarly, Turkey will be taking Sevastopol, I will be taking Ankara, and we will be set up for a Juggernaut. However, I have an option to make this an opening for Italy to Lepanto and backstab Turkey when it loses its usefulness in attacking Austria.
Apr 30

Me:
Fall 1901
F Gulf of Bothnia to Sweden
A Ukraine S A Sevastopol to Rumania
A Sevastopol to Rumania
F Armenia to Ankara

Just a continuation of my previous plan. If things go well, I'll have a +2 build and a secure hold on Austria and Turkey (who hopefully will both only have a +1). Things would be even greater if, you know, the north goes well.
May 4

Me:
Winter 1901

Build fleet on the south coast of St. Petersburg
Build army in Warsaw

I need defense from any random British stab but also a build that will prevent me from having a chance to attack Britain in Norway, and I also need another army to help on my southern front against Austria. Thus these builds.
May 5

Me:
Spring 1902

F Sweden holds
F St. Petersburg south coast holds
A Ukraine moves to Galicia
A Warsaw support A Ukraine to Galicia
A Rumania S A Bulgaria to Serbia
F Ankara holds

No need to move around my fleets from their supply centers they are defending. However, the armies are supporting Turkey to break up Austria while Italy sets up the Lepanto, and I am getting ready to give the hurt to Budapest and Vienna.
May 13

Me:
Fall 1902
A Galicia to Budapest
A Rumania S A Galicia to Budapest
A Ukraine to Galicia
All other units hold.

Hoping that I can get a build and see what I can do about the north. It's troubling me.
May 13

Me:
Spring 1903
A Galicia to Vienna
A Budapest S A Galicia to Vienna
A Rumania S A Budapest
F Ankara holds
F St Petersburg to Finland
A Moscow to St Petersburg

Pulling off some harebrained plan in hope that I can keep St Petersburg beyond this year, if Germany decides to cooperate. I am doubtful, seeing as he build in Berlin and took Sweden last turn. The south is running nicely, though, and I should have control of one or two more SCs by the end of this year."

So as you can see, my original plan was to help Italy into Turkey and run west with him. However, because the power balance was thrown off by Britain practically munching on France like an afternoon snack with Germany, Italy had no reason to expand west first. This game, however, has been my most successful Russia, and I am grateful for that.

I'll give a rough outline of what I was hoping to do here. As England, you're pretty fortunate if you can make it to 1903 with five centers in hand. That means you've got an ally in France or Germany, which is wonderful. I find that both of those alliances favor England moreso than France or Germany; it's just far too easy for England to stab either of them. On balance I prefer Germany as an ally to England over France; both work, but Germany has no excuse to build a fleet after W01, so Germany becomes easier to stab.

So when Germany and I had already exchanged about 20 messages before the autumn moves were turned in -- and France and I about five -- I couldn't have been happier. Germany got my army into Belgium and we were on our way. The one thing that didn't go according to the plan I'd drawn up for the first 2-3 years ended up working in my favor anyway; Germany didn't stand Russia out of Sweden, which made Scandinavia slow going, which was good because it slowed Germany down. (It slowed me down too, but that's fine.)

Specific tactics... against France, the idea was to convoy into Belgium with Ruhr support. Germany builds the fairly uncommitted F Kie/A Mun, as requested; I build fleets in London and Liverpool. The idea was to throw everything but the kitchen sink at France, saving the kitchen sink for Russia. Our armies combined to take Burgundy while my fleets were going to force MAO. The only units not actively being deployed against France were the fleets in Norway and Denmark and Kiel, which were to be used against Russia. The plan went fairly well, but... I got the sense that Germany was growing too fast. My hope had been to push on into the Mediterranean after France, but Italy decided to show up late and try to be a vulture, whereas Germany was about to run roughshod all over Russia.

So with France basically incapacitated, Russia still breathing and Italy coming, I decided to stab Germany with Russian help. I knew it was going to take some serious tactical work to be successful, and I committed to virtually an all-out offensive -- I remember explicitly ignoring covering some of my supply centers behind the line so I could keep up the attack. Did some moves in the Mediterranean to try to stop Italy from advancing into Spain until I could take it for myself. It worked pretty well. I then stabbed Russia again and solidified my holdings as best I could.

Had we gone on, I was going to give up Munich and Berlin for a year while my armies got into position, taking Moscow to mitigate the loss as best I could, then surround Berlin and Munich from three sides with armies in France and Germany, the Baltic fleet and armies from Russia. That would have given me a win, I think.

Karzac

My plan after stabbing Russia was to play Turkey and Austria off each other and then take the Balkans for myself. That clearly didn't work, due to Turkey betraying me and my incompetence.

As for the West, I should have gone their earlier or not at all. As it was, I was too late to make a huge impact, but it still directed resources away from the Balkans. Oh well.

I want to apologize to everyone about my sudden drop from the game. I thought I would have had time to actually get online but I didn't. So I wound up being pretty much without internet for two weeks.

As for the debrief, I entered the game totally unsure. I had my first message from Britain actually and it was a rather intimidating affair. I really had hoped to ally with France to repel and beat Britain, since I was next to two advanced players. My first mistake was helping Britain into the Low Countries. I wanted to hear word from France but never got any confirmations so I went with the power that was communicating with me.

I noticed that I expanded rather quickly at first and didn't want much more since then I'd be the focus of others. I did keep on switching my mind because I did not know what to do. Eventually I got into the groove of not disputing England that much since I don't like rocking the boat. Near the end I started getting a nagging feeling that England never fulfilled his promises regarding our expansion into France. My mind knew something was amiss but then I sort of ignored it.

The second biggest blunder I made was being vague with Italy. I thought he was still in league with Russia and I didn't want to say too much about my orders lest Russia learns of it. So I made the plans with Austria that would help Italy, because I didn't see Italy making a move that would be an actual support of Austria. At that point it was just to remove one of Russia's SCs.

I had some really fun times with this game.
