April (8)
Fritz Leiber - Swords Against Death
Richard K Morgan - Altered Carbon
Malcolm Gladwell - Blink
Scott Lynch - The Lies of Locke Lamora (Better than I expected, but worse than I had hoped.)
Julian Barnes - The Sense of an Ending (I felt this one in the pit of my stomach. Worth it, but hard to read toward the end.)
Fritz Leiber - Swords in the Mist
Oscar Wilde - The Picture of Dorian Gray
J.R.R. Tolkien - The Hobbit (first re-read since middle school!)

May (3)
Ray Bradbury - The Halloween Tree (Bradbury being poetic and abstruse like some of the stranger parts of the Martian Chronicles. Makes the Goosebumps plot way more interesting than it would have been otherwise.)
Fritz Leiber - Swords Against Wizardry
Junot Diaz - The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Wasn't crazy about it, just liked it. Like the protagonist, I usually read Genres.)

June (3)
Scott Lynch - Red Seas Under Red Skies
Malcolm Gladwell - The Tipping Point
Lloyd Alexander - The Book of Three (Real 10-year-olds are smarter than Taran. In retrospect he's probably supposed to be older but the cover has a 10 year old kid on it.)

Kurt Vonnegut - Mother Night
Lloyd Alexander - The Castle of Llyr

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - The White Company (So they lived, these men, in their own lusty, cheery fashion -- rude and rough, but honest, kindly and true)

books

Joe Haldeman - Forever Peace - nice premise, the latter half was pretty terrible though, something I would expect from Dan Brown.
Stanislaw Lem - The Star Diaries, The Futurogical Congress, Tales of Pirx the Pilot (reread) - the amazing thing about Lem's prose is that the older you are when reading it, and the better it gets.
Arthur C. Clarke - Rendezvous with Rama - Clarke has a very dry, matter-of-fact style, but this doesn't make his ideas any less interesting. I've heard bad things about the sequels though, so I'm wary of continuing the series.

manga:

Rumiko Takahashi - Inu Yasha, last 30 volumes or so - ugh...
Ikura Sugimoto - Summer Wars - stick to the movie, really.

February (3)

books:

George Orwell - Animal Farm - read the Polish translation back in high-school, original is still great after all these years. I can see why this was banned in the EastBlock though, the book isn't even trying to hide what it's about.
Connie Willis - Fire Watch - short story collection, some good, some not. Preparation for my reading of Doomsday Book and the rest of the Oxford Time Travel series.
Terry Pratchett - Wyrd Sisters (reread) - All Discworld novels are pretty much the same novel, so it's good that it's a good, funny one.

manga:

Takako Shimura - Wandering Son - well, I was kind of disappointed TBH, wasn't expecting such a typical shoujo given the main story hook...
Nobuyuki Fukumoto - Atsuize Tenma! - or rather Akagi lite. Cheating at Mahjong is something that Fukumoto does best, highly recommended if you finished both Akagi and Ten already.
Kohei Kodano - Boogiepop Doesn't Laugh - good supplement of the anime series, fun read too. The whole concept of Boogiepop is very 'Japan', but heck, I prefer that to Spawn or other superhero crud.
Magica Quartet - Puella Magi Madoka Magica - again, stick to anime. Not bad, but definitely a retread.

March (1)

books:

Neal Stephenson - Cryptonomicon - now, this is how you write a WW2 book. Now, this is how you write a current affairs thriller. Honestly, it's a pity I didn't knew about Stephenson earlier.

manga:

Masamune Shirow - Appleseed (reread) - ah, the good old days when Shirow was still drawing good cyberpunk stories, and not tentacle porn as he does now.
Kohei Kodano - Boogiepop Dual - oh dear, what happened here. Looks much worse than the first Boogiepop manga, is not as interesting as well. Avoid.

April (3)

books:

Hiroyuki Morioka - Crest of the Stars - seriously, just stick with the anime version, the author overuses Abh language here, which makes for a terrible reading experience.
Terry Pratchett - Pyramids (reread) - more of Pratchett is never a bad thing.
Phillip K. Dick - The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch (reread) - I've read this ages ago, and in Polish, it really gains a lot when you don't have to concern yourself with less than competent translation and you're old enough to really appreciate the issues PKD can raise in his books. Highly recommended.

manga:

Mitsuru Adachi - Katsu - I love Adachi. Plain and simple, even his weaker works are a joy both on the eyes and on the brain. And Katsu is certainly not one of his weaker works. Good starting point with Adachi if you're not that into baseball.
Naoki Urasawa - Pluto - I'm on the fence about Urasawa. He can draw and he can make his plots griping no matter how inane they are. The problem is, after you read the last chapter usually you can't really understand what was so griping about something as stupid as the stuff you've just read (seriously, teddy bear shaped supercomputer that runs all of USA?. Minor plus for sweet Astro Boy redesign.

After literally more than a year of picking away at it, I've finally finished What's Going on in There (http://www.amazon.ca/Whats-Going-There-Brain-Develop/dp/0553378252/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1336176855&sr=8-1), a book about neurological development in children from conception to the age of about 6 years. It was really slow going, since the book is pretty dense and can be quite technical at times, and I'm pretty relieved to have finally finished it. On the other hand, there is a wealth of really useful information about child rearing in there, and I'm super glad to have fought my way through it. It will definitely have an impact on how I raise my son, hopefully for the better, and that's fantastic.

That said, I think I'm ready for something a bit lighter for my next book. I promised a friend that I would read The China Study, another sciency book about how vegan/vegetarian diets (may) reduce the incidence of cancer, but I think I'll put that off until I've powered my way through the first of the Song of Ice and Fire books. Yay for light fiction!

I didn't manage to finish Les Trois Mousquetaires by the end of the month like I'd hoped. Turns out that reading a 700 page novel in French is hard.

Oh, I just noticed this thread.

January (4)

Spice: History of Temptation (Jack Turner) -- this one's for work. Still, a fun historical account.
Finding Ben (Barbara LaSalle) -- a brutally honest and very well-written autobiographical account about raising an autistic kid.
The Whore of Akron (Scott Raab) -- very personal account on one man's hatred of LeBron James.
The Bicentennial Man and Other Stories (Isaac Asimov) -- the best Asimov short story collection (among the few I've read).

February (2)

Under The Dome (Stephen King) -- a bit too long, but good ol' pulpy King fun.
Heart-Shaped Box (Joe Hill) -- solid ghost story that unfortunately pulled its punches by the end.

March (1)

The History of Sumatra (James Marsden) -- also for work, I translated this. Can be read here. (http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16768/16768-h/16768-h.htm)

April (2)

High Fidelity (Nick Hornby) -- the movie's better, and at times I can't stand the narrator.
The Long Way Down (Nick Hornby) -- for some reason, I like it better than HF. Some really delicious black humor.

May (2)

The Blade Itself (Joe Abercrombie) -- officially my favorite fantasy novel now.
The Catcher in The Rye (J.D. Salinger) -- read it for the first time and like it.

Yeah, I was looking to learn the gist of the plot in a short amount of time, and for that it served me well enough. I'll look into the complete text one of these days, though I'm not quite sure when I'll have the time.

For some reason a few weeks ago, I went "Alexis, you are an English teacher, and you have not read a thing for fun in literally years. Read a book." So I bought myself one of those new-fangled electronic books, and I have been, uh, reading. A lot of it has been on my phone, while I'm waiting for other things, which is pretty cool, I think. Anyway, here we go. Also, please try to guess where I am going for vacation in January! It shouldn't be hard.

I basically didn't read last year. The entirety of my literary accomplishments for 2012 are as follows:

Monster Nation
Monster Island (for the 2nd time)
Monster Planet

I did start reading Frankenstein though, so that's something?
