"Can this wait, Jor? Now's not really the time," Kemba deadpanned as she smashed in a zombie's face with a Loxodon Warhammer, causing a cat to appear from thin air.

Welcome to Left 4 Magic! We have Five Survivors, all trying to outlast the Zombie Horde, as envisioned by this article (http://www.quietspeculation.com/2011/09/horde-magic-a-new-way-to-play-magic-and-survive-zombie-invasions/).

The mission is simple: Each player contributes their 20 life to a communal pool for a total of 100. They must outlast and defeat the Zombie Horde. The Survivors win if the Zombie deck runs out of cards and controls no creatures.

The Horde wins if the Survivors' communal life pool is depleted. The Horde attacks by way of a deck of mostly creature tokens. During the Horde's turn, cards are revealed from the top of the deck until a non-token card is revealed. All the tokens are put in to play, then the non-token card is cast. The Horde has INFINITE MANA, so it IS possible to see something like a Grave Titan on the Horde's first turn. To alleviate this, the Survivors get three turns of setup time to prepare until Jor accidentally shoots a car, setting off an alarm, and summoning the horde.

Each of the Horde's creatures has haste, and must attack if able. Its creatures may not block. If, for some reason, the Survivors go on the offensive, then each point of damage translates in to one card milled from the top of the Horde's deck.

Everyone, all the rules for 2-Headed Giant apply in this case: simultaneous turns, no shared mana pool. Take your three turns, and once we're all in, the Horde goes. And remember, you DO get to draw for the first turn!

The Horde has 100 cards.

I've got the horde deck on Magic Workstation. The deck is designed to be an auto-pilot kind of thing. Nothing really based around decision-making.

Also, Unsummon Kinda works. It will bounce the card back to the Horde's hand, but since INFINITE MANA, it will replay the creature the next turn.

While I'm thinking of it, the Horde will not have a hand. You can coordinate with other players and teamwork a thing away.

Example: Dude 1 unsummons the Grave Titan, and then the other smacks the Horde with a Hypnotic Specter, forcing the grave titan to be discarded.

I know it's not allowed under 2HG rules, but if it were, I'd totally say that we all dump our equipment on Kemba. 3 cats per turn plus Blasto gets to untap his lands and do more fun things.

As an aside, my first draw had Trepanation Blade (http://magiccards.info/query?q=!Trepanation%20Blade) in it, and then I realized that using that would just end the game, so I sideboarded it out and redrew.

Still kinda stings, though. 5 players (again, does the Horde count as a player?), and so that's 5 damage to the Survivors.

Maggot Carrier attacks, and we have Kemba who could eat it for breakfast (not that she'd want to, you know, EAT it, so I'm just gonna go ahead and drop the Maggot Carrier in the graveyard and just say it's the Survivors' turn.

Tap Plains to equip Stoneforge Mystic with the Sword of Feast and Famine, and swing with her. 3 damage to the Horde (Please bold whatever damage you do to the horde. I'll total it all up once everyone's resolved their attack step.)

This causes all my lands to untap, and I'll use all three of my lands to drop the Sword of Light and Shadow. I really need a land...

I'd argue that the Horde is a player. If it isn't, there are far too many effects that simply cease to work, such as the simple Fireball to the face.

I think this was designed to be best-played with 4 people.

It doesn't help that three or more of us got nut-draws.

Also, guys, when I finally get a second creature, let me block a zombie with Stoneforge. I'm so gonna be stripping equipment out of the deck with her, now that I have Light and Shadow in play.

Well, from reading the article that was linked in the other thread, the key is to adjust your EDH deck so its not completely broken against the horde. I'm sure over time one could come up with a banlist and tweak the zombie deck as needed. Did anyone read the follow up the creator posted? It has some worthwhile additions in it http://www.quietspeculation.com/2011/10/horde-magic-an-open-source-project/

Also good to know your strategy TirMCDohl. I was so planning to mimic vat the Stoneforge Mystic if you ever let it die.

Well, from reading the article that was linked in the other thread, the key is to adjust your EDH deck so its not completely broken against the horde.

This is kind of a terrible solution. A better one might be to rule around things that shut the horde down:
- Horde creatures can never have their power or toughness reduced below 1 as a result of counters.
- The Horde is immune to poison counters.
- Horde creatures are immune to effects that would prevent them from attacking.
- The Horde always plays each phase of its turn. Effects that would cause it to lose a turn or skip a phase are ignored.

Alternatively, you could just make the horde play dirty (Coat of Arms springs to mind as one possibility).

Wow. My 3 Damage plus Arithon's 7 damage equals 10 milled cards. Incidentally the Horde is special in that tokens behave differently for them than normal. They can exist in the graveyard and hand like any normal card. Let's see...

I got no blockers. I think the only one we have handy is Kemba, who could take one of the tokens.

The follow-up article has a ban list that contains two cards that we've seen in this thread, Elesh Norn and Trenapation Blade. and yeah, if we do this again, I might drop some of those cards from the follow-up article, and maybe we could playtest the Special Infected cards.

I'm thinking that Angelic Arbiter needs to be another banned card, as it completely shuts down the Horde, much like Elesh Norn. It has to cast spells by the nature of its deck construction.

Honestly, this is the first EDH deck I have made. I thought the repeatable ability to lock down a creature might be useful? Also I figured it was a good combo with Gideon's Avenger (http://magiccards.info/m12/en/17.html). I definitely will appreciate advice/criticism on the deck though! I will say that I play very casually, so my cardbase is rather limited. (Pretty much Zendikar on, with a small amount of earlier cards, not too many mythics either).

I'll be honest: I cannot see how zombies can win this game without some kind of enormous life loss card. I'm going to start using Mimic Vat and Miren to sac&reanimate Yosei every turn, meaning their creatures never get to untap (I do it at instant speed on their turn, so they have to get at least six creatures untapped to attack at all). What's more, we're gaining 7 life each cycle, McDohl is dual-swording the zombies in the face, and Arithon is already swinging for massive damage every turn.

(Also when I said earlier that Elesh Norn means we do more damage? yeah, she doesn't. Stupid mistake...)

Yeah, I just proxied 'em in. For my own notes:

Nihil Spellbomb = The Boomer. 2/2 Zombie Creature. If The Boomer deals combat damage, destroy the Boomer. Put 5 2/2 Zombie creature tokens in to play.

Fog = The Smoker. 2/2 Zombie Creature. The Smoker is unblockable. When The Smoker comes in to play, select a Survivor at random. That player may not cast spells, play activated abilities, or declare blockers as long as the Smoker is in play. When the Smoker dies, prevent all combat damage that would be dealt by the selected Survivor's creatures that turn.

Bullwhip = The Jockey. 2/2 Zombie Creature. If The Jockey deals damage to the Survivors, select a survivor at random. That survivor's creatures must attack each turn if able as long as the Jockey remains in play.

Lightning Bolt = The Spitter. 2/2 Zombie Creature. If The Spitter is blocked, it deals 3 damage, divided evenly among each blocking creature, rounded down. When The Spitter dies, it deals 3 damage to the Survivors.

Creepy Doll = The Witch. 4/4 Zombie Creature. The Witch cannot attack. If the Survivors deal combat damage to the Horde, put an enrage counter on The Witch. As long as the Witch has an enrage counter, she may attack and is unblockable.

Rampaging Baloths = The Charger. 8/8 Zombie Creature. Trample.

Blightsteel Colossus = The Tank. 20/20 Zombie Creature. Trample. If The Tank would be dealt damage, instead put an equal number of -1/-1 counters on The Tank.

...you're right. The Yosei copy tokens get binned before they hit the graveyard, so it wouldn't tap down the Horde. But it's like having infinite medkits for the survivors, so the end result is the same. Arithon and I are cracking skulls, the zombies continue to do negligible damage to the Survivors.

Let's try this one again, same decks. Just 4 Survivors, me as the AI Director.

Correct me if I'm wrong... Sudden Spoiling turns them all into 0/2s, but it doesn't negate Archangel's bonus, which is applied after the creature's base stats are taken into account.

Damnation was pretty much the only card left that could save the horde, since it would have wiped the board clear. Instead of it being flipped and cast, it was sent to the graveyard along with 57 other cards since we dealt 58 damage to the horde. No matter how many zombies flipped this turn and attacked, with the current creatures on the board we would be able to attack the next turn for lethal damage and end the game.

Does anyone want to get another round of this going? Maybe 1-0 startup turns, double flip? Or we could try a different tribe, say Slivers?

Mmmaybe you should do one or two of these changes and test that way.

Actually, regardless of how you set it up, you oughta play it until you exhaust the horde, even if your life totals drop negative. That'll give you a better idea for balance the next time around.

Hey, guys. I wanted to give this thing another shot. I think it might be worth trying to fine tune.

Current Ban List:
Trepanation Blade - Strips out the horde deck, as there's no land.
Angelic Arbiter - This screws with the deck's mechanics.

Also, I'd like to tweak it down to 2 setup turns, and possibly shuffle in, say, 10 more zombie tokens.
