Please help me settle a longstanding argument with my wife. Of Dutch rock band Golden Earring's two big hits -- 1973's "Radar Love" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwqMKf7r7Xg) and 1982's "Twilight Zone" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylGkm2EHHvE) -- which is the better song?

You're both wrong, the best Golden Earring song is 1984's When the Lady Smiles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaDHxAfnUo0). But of the two you provided, I prefer Twilight Zone. Both of them are pretty gimmicky, but Twilight Zone commits thoroughly to its gimmick, and that must always be applauded.

I did not know they were Dutch.

Also, how is Radar Love gimmicky?

I also I didn't know that they were Dutch. Anyway, the answer is Radar Love. Easy (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=1130771).

Although I do have an affection for Twilight Zone since once my dad, my sister, and I were in the car on a vacation and sang the dumb "when the bullet hits the bone" part of the chorus together. Also that cool bassline and laser-y sound effects.

Then I applaud your commitment to knee-jerk contrarianism.

"When the Lady Smiles" is pretty good, though. I'm not sure I've ever heard it before -- I guess it never received any recognition in the States?

Clearly the answer is Radar Love. Twilight Zone never got featured in a plastic guitar game. Yeah I know it was a cover shut up.

Eh, at least Rush tried to make their Twilight Zone relevant to the show.

Radar Love has a much better chorus, but the song is too stingy with it, allowing only one run each verse until the very end, leaning too much on the endless chugga-chugga-chug in between, and that dumbass brass buildup halfway through is just blurgh.

That said, the good parts knock the shit out of anything "twilight zone" has to offer. TZ isn't bad, it's just a long-ass "ok" song.

I picked Twilight Zone because the "bullet hits the bone" line is so damn cool. Also me and my buddy never got the lyrics until we had been listening to the song for twenty years. "The moon has stars? What the fuck is this guy talking about?"

You can also hear the ever-relevant Chris Goss covering this extremely awesome part of the song in Flak n' Flight's 100 Years (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVSQvD7rxtM), featuring his good buddy Josh Homme on guitar. Smoke 'em if you got 'em fellas.

I don't think I could pick. When I was young, I loved Twilight Zone so much. Later, my tastes refined and I was able to appreciate Radar Love. I probably sing Radar Love more often, though.
