At work they had the Spike TV Guys' Choice awards or some such on the TV in the break room. Anyway, they gave what amounted to a lifetime acheivement award to Adam Sandler, who gave an acceptance speech in his little Adam Sandler voice, followed by him introducing Styx, who played a number.

We once nearly killed one of our cats that way. He was still young and small enough to crawl into the engine of an '87 Oldsmobile Cutlass (this was around '88 or so) and when my dad started the engine we just heard this horrible shriek and an equally horrible yowling. The cat was mostly fine --it took a while to extricate him, but he got off with a neatly shaved wrist, some friction burns which stopped bleeding within minutes, and a healthy fear of cars-- alas, the engine's belt was destroyed and had to be replaced.

Ever since, we ALWAYS honk the horn and wait at least fifteen seconds before starting the engine. Luckily, all subsequent cats have learned that they can bask in the warmth of a car engine by sleeping on the hood rather than inside it.

Now I'm scared to drive. Thanks guys!

On Wednesday, my wife was driving home when she saw a bird hopping around in the road. She stopped and moved it off the road, and it just jumped right back out into the road. So, she had to put it in a carrier - she knows someone that rehabs birds and this little guy was probably hit by a car.

Continuing down the highway, she then came upon a dog, a corgi, stumbling around in the road. It was in shock and had been shot in the leg. (Yay hunters!) So, she had to turn around and go back to the vet hospital she works at.

Maggie
06-16-2007, 03:27 PM
I'm thinking about getting into veterinarian...ism(?), mostly for reasons like that.

The worst are when you see things like that and you can't possibly help. We have an old printed out sign on one of our telephone poles here that says "Lost pit bull puppy. Answers to (I forget the name). He needs his medicine. Cash reward."

You just sort of have to hope they found the little guy and forgot to take down the sign.

I've really been enjoying the Marvel Adventures comics, the ones made for kids featuring superheroes doing dumb kiddy stuff like fighting actual evil and winning. Also, the pacing is wonderful- one Adventures book would be a six-issue story arc in the main line. Though they're intended for kids they've been well-written and haven't fallen into the all-too-common trap of trying to sound forcedly hip to appeal to the kiddies.

Until I got to Iron Man #2 this week.

Comic book continuity officially ended in the mid-90s, when I stopped reading. The exact date is somewhere between when Ch'p died in Green Lantern: Mosaic and when they started drawing Wolfsbane ugly in X-Factor.

So if you ask me about the times when Hal Jordan killed Kilowog or Sue Dibny died or Peter Parker turned out to be a clone or the Scarlet Witch destroyed the Marvel universe, I shall have to plead ignorance.

Not that I saw. But you raise a good point. Though if Stan wrote it the whole comic would sound like that and it wouldn't seem quite as out of place.

And speaking of Stan Lee, I have to own this toy. (http://marvelousnews.com/index.php?catid=23&itemid=10983)

I love that.

Oh, and apparently I'm insane.

Case in point: I'm walking through the bookstore yesterday and I'm not paying much attention, then I look down and just happen to notice Azumanga Daioh in the bargain section, just sitting there nowhere near any other manga books, and it's the one volume I've been needing to buy for several years now.

So that's rather serendipitous. But wait, there's more. Just several weeks ago, I was bitterly jealous that the voice actress for Tomo Takino in the anime is a girl roughly my age, living relatively close to me who had no acting training and just auditioned and got the job.

Hmm.

So I'm flipping through the book and I see a reference to No-Face from Spirited Away and I decide to find out when the book was printed, just in case it isn't really a No-Face reference. Printed in 2002, so it probably is. But then I notice that ADV is apparently based in Houston? Maybe five or so hours from here? Neat.

So I think, "Hey, maybe it's a sign that I should audition there or something?" Or, as I said previously, maybe I'm just insane. Plus I'm not entirely sure how someone like me would go about... uh.. putting my foot in the door. Oh, I could email them, sure, but I can imagine their response:

"Hey! Thanks for your interest in us and future projects! Oh, but just so you know, roughly three hundred little idiots like you write in asking for acting jobs each day! Don't get us wrong, we think it's fine as a peach that someone so clearly mentally deficient can operate a computer and send emails, but might we suggest crayola.com instead of bothering us?"

Ok, so there's my rant, safely tucked away in the Pit of Flames. I feel much cleansed.

Living right in Houston, I thought about trying for a VA job at ADV when I was in high school. I was mostly like, OMG, they make Evangelion here! Then anime and I had a falling out and we broke up. My dreams of anime stardom were never realized, and I live a sad, sad existence. Moral of the story? You should get a DS.

Anyway, the series is about a dwarf streetwalker and her adventures.

For example "Prostitot and the Horrible, Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Yeast Infection"

or

"The Littlest Pimp and Prostitot in: Damn, girl, you just keep falling down stairs all the time, that's crazy. Isn't that crazy, doc?"

people should talk more about that rainbow jizz horse

No, people should pretend the rainbow pissing horse DOES NOT EXIST!

Wait, I thought he was peeing.

That's just sick.

I'm pretty sure 'pissing rainbows' is a phrase I've heard somewhere in the bowls of internet nerddom. So I'm pretty sure the horse is taking a big leak.

I'm also pretty sure that we need to stop discussing it. Like, right now.

After spending way too much time looking around 4chan, I feel like I've seen just about every horror that the bowls of the internet have to offer.

And even I can't see why kids love the taste of cinnamon toast crunch.

Sometimes I wonder how long video games will have to exist before they stop being represented in commercials and TV shows with the sound effects from the Atari 2600 version of Donkey Kong.

I think they're moving on to the NES or something now. Maybe GameBoy.

I kinda wish they'd stop using the Doom monster sounds in every cheap B-horror movie out there. There's only so many times I can hear the imp roar, either standard or distorted before I get irritated.

Parodies of the dances in the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky ☆ Star are a dime a dozen on Youtube, but few of them feature hand drawn animation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjE4fi0E0DU). I'm amazed that someone would go to all that trouble, but it's the good kind of amazement. Best part: the dancing Churuya at the end.

I'm astounded at the amount of work that video must have taken, and even more impressed at the level of creativity on display. Using backgrounds from the Haruhi world adds so much to the humor. The character choices make it even better. Tsuruya as Kagami and Yuki as Tsukasa...and the appearances of Itsuki, Kyon and especially Ryoko are just perfect. Seeing her smiling and waving pleasantly is hilarious. Note the knife behind her back!

But of course the crowning achievement is the epilogue with Churuya. THIS IS QUALITY ENTERTAINMENT.

Of course you'd have to be well versed in both Melancholy and Lucky Star to fully appreciate it. I think it's worth the effort though!

Nursing my sore throat two hours later, I now realise it probably wasn't a good idea to get soaked in a rainstorm and then board an air-conditioned bus.

I've been ranting to my boyfriend for like 2 solid days about how much Farscape bothers me with how it's put together. I really don't know if I should take that as a sign that I'm interested enough to be angry when it does stupid things and I should keep watching, or that it makes me angry and I should just stop.

So I was looking around through various comments on 1up in people's blogs, and it got me angry.

People are stupid.

I'm afraid to go into the forums.

Not very. Halfway through season 1 or so. About the point when they decide they should have character development instead of being episodic and do it badly.

Stick with it. The character development will start paying off big time toward the end of this season, and on into the next three. It's really a crime the show got canceled like it did.
