View Full Version : The Curious Case of Dr. Pepper & Mr. Pibb

A lot of of our favorite drinks always have knock offs lurking in the aisles. However with these two, it always specifically uses the Mr. or Dr. prefix.

What's the strangest rename you've seen?

Pics aren't necessary, but post'em if you got'em.

Okay, so Dr Thunder is pretty well-known because it's Wal-Mart's generic brand. Some of the funnier ones I've seen that are regional:

Safeway brand, I saw this soda when I lived out west. I love how it looks like they ran out of space for the name:

Also saw this one in Arizona:

Saw this one somewhere in upstate New York:

And, my personal favorite, from my local Pittsburgh grocery chain, Giant Eagle:

Dr. Becker? Since when has that old sitcom been a name to conjure by?

I need to hunt down some of that Virgil's version.

when they say it's almost like it was made in heaven, they aren't exaggerating by much.

Kind of happy/sad how many store brands I can recognize in Daikaiju's pic... Somebody went to a lot of effort, because I know Dr. Choice can't extend more than a 400 mile radius outside of the AR/MO/OK/KS corner

You sure you're not thinking of that other doctor? You know, Dr. William H. Cosby.

The fact that he has a downturned magnet for a belt buckle does suggest Dr. Dude might have some roofies tucked away somewhere...

Dr. Fine is a funny enough name, but even better is the brand name ShurFine. For when you're so desperate that you'll even eat the worst of foods.

Mac n cheese for 25cents? Sure, fine.

Wal-Mart's is even better. They've got one brand called Great Value, which is okay, but if you're strapped for cash, you can get Price First. It's always the cheapest, but as you can tell from the name, quality and flavor are secondary concerns.

I was already getting a super creepy vibe from just the general art style, then I noticed the combination of the phrase "magnetic personality" and his uh... belt buckle.

I would not accept a glass of soda from Dr. Dude.

Just look at the look of pure terror on that poor nurse's face.

Meanwhile my cousin remarks that Dr. Good Guy sounds like he's probably just Dr. Wily in disguise again.

It's actually the backglass for the world's most terrifying pinball game. And I guess it's available as part of FarSight's Pinball Arcade if you're (morbidly) curious.

Yeah, Virgil's makes some of the best sodas I've ever had. I'm more interested in Dr. Better because it's from them than because it's a Dr Pepper clone.

We have some Dr. Better sitting on a shelf at home. Personally I'm not into Dr. Pepper flavor at all, so I've given it a pass. Their cream soda is fucking delicious, though, so I'm sure the Better is great if you're into that flavor genre.

I've never heard of Dr. Better but I can't help thinking it's the name of an early 20th century snake oil salesman.

"You got muscular polyps, collapsed marrow or butterflies in the tummy? We got the cure. One swig from Dr. Better's Healing-Style All-Purpose Miracle Brew and Conditioner and you'll go from the Yellow Kid to Hercules. Remember folks, I ain't Dr. Good. I'm Doctor Better!"

Fun fact that no one asked for: I drank Dr.Pepper as my soda of choice - or "coke" of choice, as we say down here - for about 30 years and I still remember the moment I stopped. About four years ago, sitting down at a crawfish boil, chugging a Dr.Pepper and I thought to myself, "This...doesn't taste right anymore." Haven't touched a Dr.Pepper since.

Dr.Thunder is Walmart's brand and they're pretty okay. The soda, not Walmart.

Mr.Pibb > Dr.Pepper, btw.

MacFuddy asks, "Hey, what if we put the PEPPER in Dr. Pepper?"
This has a building spicy bite. I think it's cloves since there's no cooling sensation like you get with peppermint and straight pepper would be nasty.
