Should I go for Elite or the other?

If you were already planning on getting the premium and have an HDTV with HDMI capabilities, I would go for the Elite myself as it is only $80 more. However, if you don't care about HDMI and do not plan to download stuff (Marketplace content) and use the 120GB HD, there isn't really a need for the Elite so go for the premium.

I thought the Elite was $180 more?

I've been thinking about it for a while, but I just can't make the plunge. I'm pretty happy with my Wii at the moment. But if I ever get a nice TV, it will be the first thing I get for it.

It's $180 more than the core, $80 more than the Premium.

Honestly? I'd wait for a price drop and a hardware revision to solve the red-ring-of-death problem first. I've owned two 360s, and while the first one caused me problems, the second one was trouble-free for the few months I had it.

I'd wait till they put in all the new quieter gear before I get a 360. And I don't know how you feel about your local Gamestop, but I'd consider getting the replacement plan.

No need. Microsoft's given them all a year warranty.

If you just want to play games, then go with the Premium. If you are planning on downloading tons of content (TV Shows, XBL Arcade games, music) then I'd suggest the Elite, if you can find it.

I'm really thinking about taking the plunge at some point, unless the quality of Mass Effect, Halo 3 and Bioshock are all terrible lies. Thing is, though, I want to get the latest model and avoid refurbished systems. Any good retailers for these purposes? Also, have they set a release date for the quieter chipset yet?

Aparently, they're putting new heatsinks into refurbished models. (http://kotaku.com/gaming/just-in-time-for-summer/repaired-xbox-360s-get-new-heatsink-268701.php)

Not sure if that's for all the systems manufactured at this point, though. I'd say try Best Buy, because I know for sure that my GameStop's been sitting on 360's for a while, so they won't have the new hottness.

So far there have been no reports of 'new' models having the new heatsinks. They may be in the pipeline, though.

I'm curious about when they're going to pony up and start putting in optical drives that a) don't scratch your discs for no good reason, and b) don't sound like a 747 at full takeoff.

I dunno, even given Microsoft's commitment to honoring its warranties and such, I usually like to spring the extra cash for an extended one.

Yeah, I kind of have a wait-and-see attitude with the 360 so far as well. As much as I would like to buy one right now, I'ma at least wait a couple more months and see what happens.

Am I the only one who really doesn't have a problem with Microsoft?

Also, GS Replacement plan isn't an extended warranty, it's just a year in-store. So basically, it's the same warranty as Microsoft, but you pay to change it in store.

Best Buy's is two years, in store exchange. That starts from the date of purchase, though - it's not two years after MS' one-year is up.

I've bought about a dozen Best Buy warranties, but have never had to use one, so I can't comment on how easy/difficult it is to get one swapped.

I just wanted to say that my 360 is being repaired at this very moment... maybe... and although I'll wait until it gets back in working condition to make a final verdict, I really had no problems with their customer support, and the fact that they're giving me another month of Live to replace the time I don't have my box is a very nice touch and an issue I hadn't thought about.
I'm just excited I get an extra heatsink. I love heatsinks!

I didn't mean to question the quality of their service, because anecdotal evidence over the internet has proven that they're pretty committed to upholding their warranties and replacing defective hardware.

On that note though, I don't have any qualms over the Microsoft monolith at large, either. They got where they are in the business for a reason; I'm not going to hate on them just because. (Which isn't to imply that anyone here does, but you know... 'big business = EVIL' for some people).

Also, GS Replacement plan isn't an extended warranty, it's just a year in-store. So basically, it's the same warranty as Microsoft, but you pay to change it in store.
Huh. I guess I'll have to keep that in mind. I'd probably just shop somewhere that does offer me an extended warranty then.

I personally only see the MS hatred on the internets (surprise, surprise). Most people I know don't really feel one way or the other towards them myself included.

My old manager/good friend tried to get her iPod replaced after they had bought the warranty through BB on it. 3 months, 4 REFURBISHED/broken iPods, and a lot of anger later, they finally got a new one. After, of course, going to a different Best Buy.

I personally only see the MS hatred on the internets (surprise, surprise). Most people I know don't really feel one way or the other towards them myself included.

I hear people say that they refuse to buy an Xbox because it's Microsoft, and they're stubborn-ass rednecks. They don't say the redneck part, but I KNOW it's true.

Hatred of Google is so much more hip these day, and more warranted.

Why, because Google spies on its users, collects their data and generally makes their lives miserable? You're kidding yourself if you think MS doesn't to that as well. Ever heard of the acronym WGA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage)?

Microsoft is a shitty company that happens to have achieved a monopoly in the computer market. They make a pretty good game console that has an obscenely high failure rate, which some people are apparently willing to put up with.

Torgo
06-14-2007, 09:33 AM
I don't really understand how any of the information WGA collects 'makes my life miserable'. I mean, I can understand and level with some people getting upset as a matter of principle, but I can't say any of that stuff really bothers me.

The heaviest criticism I can level is that I can't buy a freaking computer anymore without stinking Vista on it. Thanks guys, because I wanted a currently-pointless os that consumes more hardware resources. But I blame system manufacturers for that as much as I do MS.

Makkara

WGA made my life miserable briefly, because it made me have to hunt for a crack. Pirating Windows used to be so much more convenient.

Seriously. I had a friend bring one over last week. Damn thing is loud. Really loud. Like a Dreamcast in a microphone. It's a cliche, but it's true. When you put in a disc, it sounds like a little helicopter preparing for liftoff. It's loud enough to break the mood in cutscenes.

If you're going to gamble, make sure you get that whip for Jessica. Makes her a force to be reckoned with. You can pretty much ignore every weapon for in the game up until the end. Think of the savings!

I'll second this. Especially the Nyko one: it just fits onto the back of the 360, hijacking the power jack for its own use. That means that the 360 and the Intercooler form a parallel load on the poor power source, which was designed to satisfy the 360 and its power requirements alone. So, yeah. The Intercooler leeches power off the brick, the brick goes red, and it shuts off the power output (and the console) as a safety measure. Good thing, too --a friend bought the device, and the plastic casing of the Intercooler's own bridge connector was beginning to turn a frightening shade of burnt brown.

I'm not aware of Nyko's solution to the issue, or if newer models (if they exist) corrected it. Better to simply place the 'box and the brick somewhere with appropriate ventilation.

alexb

This is why you don't buy Nyko.

If you do buy one, get it from a store that offers over-the-counter replacement. MS may have put the warranty up to a full year, but you have to dick around with shipping and get a "Refurbished" machine, which may just be somebody else's broken 360 that tested well enough for them to turn it back out. A friend had to have his replaced 3 times, since the refurbs were giving the Red Ring immediately. He called and bitched at a few people in Mumbai, now he has a new 360, but the delays and aggravations were not worth his time.

I had to grind plenty in FFXII, but I think I ground...once, maybe? in DQVIII.

Depends: the Silver can get you XBLA games, gamerpics, themes, and access to the Marketplace (whose contents depend on your current location. As of now, unless your console resides in the US, you're pretty much screwed.) However, you're locked out of multiplayer anything until you subscribe to a Gold membership, which, like mentioned earlier, can also get you some games and demos quicker.

I decided to give the Nyko Intercooler another chance, because the latest model was redesigned so that it doesn't damage the unit... at least, that's the claim from Nyko. I hate leaving the system on for more than an hour because it gets so friggin' hot, and anything that addresses the problem is at least worth a look.

Okay, I have an Xbox. Problem is, it keeps turning off at random moments while I'm playing. I think it may be overheating. Anyone else know the solution, or am I going to have to send it in and hope I get a nifty new heatsink?

You only had the 360 for what, 2 days? You could probably take it back to the store and exchange it for a working one.

Guy
06-17-2007, 02:57 AM
The store has a "no system return" policy, but it's okay. I went back and it turns out I just got a faulty power supply. The owner of the store just traded me mine for one of the power supplies for his demo Xboxes and just said he'd tell Microsoft it was his and get it replaced. Super nice of him, I thought.

I wasn't aware that the 360 needed a wireless network adaptor (I assumed it was wireless out of the box, just like the Wii) so I'll have to hook it up tomorrow to get me some Live Arcade games and demos and whatnot.

Yeah, it was a special Father's Day offer, here in Mexico.

Actually, I got it for aprox. $350, but the usual price here is $450. I just made the necessary changes for US people to understand how much I saved :p

Then again, I guess $350 is not that bad.
