I've a blog at moltenboron.cementhorizon.com (http://moltenboron.cementhorizon.com) . It's 90% a personal blog I use as a way to keep friends and family up to date on my life, but I occasionally dabble in value-added content for random folks who stumble in through Google searches. It has been woefully neglected for several months.

Mine is The Blogtastic Blogfest that is Getmeoutofthis.net (http://www.getmeoutofthis.net), a horrible title that I enjoy anyway, and I do update it regularly (about every other day, sometimes daily) with random shit what fall out of my brain. At times I try to write rambling, personal reviews of things, but mostly it's just me talking at something to get ideas out of my head. I don't really suggest anyone read it, but it's there and you asked, so there it is.
Mama did some real nice art for the top bar, though. At least look at that.

Hey, any of you Wordpress users know how to configure it so that it only shows an excerpt from my post on the main page? I want a "Click here to continue" to show up after a few paragraphs, so it's easy to skim my page for the variety of content I'm creating.

I also want to know if there are any Wordpress plugins you particularly recommend.

Mightyblue
03-14-2008, 10:45 PM
Vs, stick <!--more--> at the end of whatever paragraph you want the excerpt to be. Alternatively you can look up html tags or coding through google since that's mostly what WP functions off of.

Also, I've started updating my blog again, now that I'm not under a massive time crunch (a lie, but it helps me vent anyway). Last two topics have been about visual novels. Lord help me.

Not so much a blog as a website, I do all my stuff over at RetrowareTV.com (http://www.RetrowareTV.com)

I do post on the main page occasionally in more of a Blog format, but for the most part it's all posts about my show and the other guys shows that I work with on the site.

Yeah yeah, my wife put that up, and I can't stand it... I'm trying to get her to tell me how she wants it, so I can design it for her and get that 10million point font off my frontpage.

Of course, I'm also working on splitting the blogs up, such that the main page only has each of our most recent blogs, and you use a subdomain link to get to the rest of our respective posts. Splitting up a wordpress blog after it's been implemented in one DB (with one prefix) is something of a trick. I'll probably end up (ugh) readding all the posts to a new DB.

You know, my blog is tremendously popular with spam. Does anyone know how can I avoid it?

I use a plugin called Akismet. (http://akismet.com/) You'll need a free account on Wordpress.com to use it. It's working very well so far -- I no long get tons of e-mail asking me to moderate comments that turn out to be spam. They just sit in the Akismet queue until I decide to go to that tab in my settings, then I can hit one button to delete them all.

I don't have a lot of blog spam (or I didn't on my old blog) but I do get a lot of Email spam for my public address. (which apears on the site)

Strangely all the spam I get is in Chinese and is unreadable to me. I assume it's about my mortgage and "that certain part of the male body" though.

Mightyblue

I get a lot of Russian or Greek ('tis in Cyrillics) spam on the blog itself, and my gmail account is setup throughly enough that almost all spam goes into my spam box to begin with.

I used to get about 50 spam emails a day before the blog, and now it's around 80-ish I think.

This is convenient for my purposes. What are they, you ask? Well, I'm trying to get as many views on my blog as possible, but I'm not sure why. Since I still use Wordpress' basest form, there's no possibility of monetary gain. Maybe I just don't want my blog to be lonely on the cold e-streets. More probably, however, I'd like to be able to stop using thinly-veiled spam comments to create the illusion of an active community.

Question to commenters:

Would you prefer if your comments were responded to? I know that I read and approve the comments that are posted to my blog, but I'm not sure if I should respond, and if I do respond, if they'll even come back to check it out.

Vahn16
03-23-2008, 03:10 PM
Generally, from what I've read on blogs about how to blog (that, in turn, read other blogs about how to blog), responding to comments should be a priority. In essence, it shows readers that the blogger -- who, for all they know, could be some sort of omnipotent being of infinite evil -- is just like them. A normal person. Thus, the readers are given a reason to emotionally invest themselves in the blog and its well-being, providing you, the blogger, with a dedicated fanbase instead of momentary readers who never return your calls.

reibeatall
03-23-2008, 03:48 PM
So, yes.

Thank you sir.

Red Hedgehog
03-23-2008, 04:39 PM
I think it's a good thing to respond to comments. It helps create a better bond with people reading your blog helping to ensure that they'll come back.

poetfox
03-23-2008, 05:30 PM
I just want to say that, I dunno, thinking about how to bring people to my blog just seems kinda silly? As much as I'd like someone to read it deep down, it's really not for anyone besides myself, and I'm fine with that. If all it ends up being is a searchable database of what I was thinking at the time I can access on any computer? I'm happy. But I'm sure I'm probably weird in that regard.

That said, if your plan is to get regular readers and keep them coming back, then responding to comments, at least up to the point where you can't handle it any more (which means you've won) is definitely the sort of thing you'd want to do, I think. At the very least, it certainly couldn't hurt.

Balrog
03-23-2008, 06:08 PM
I think it's just good form to respond if someone comments on your blog, assuming what they said isn't totally without merit.

tungwene
03-23-2008, 07:38 PM
Most blogs I tend to continue reading responds to their commenters, maybe not every comment but definitely any that ask any further questions, and keeps up a lively dialogue with their readers. It makes people feel like their opinions are important.

It's also where I show off the crazy stuff that I acquire in my travels, such as this bunnyhug based on one of Sheana's drawrings (http://labville.blogspot.com/2008/02/ceci-n.html).

I'm gonna shamelessly promote my blog once more, as I now have enough drawings, musings, etc that actually updating it won't be a tedious chore; you guys may in fact enjoy reading it!

i can quit whenever i want to (icanquitwheneveriwant.blogspot.com) is my chronicling of my pop culture addiction; also, I plan to continue displaying art I make, and to put up some songs and other stuff.

So yeah, feel free to visit and comment; I crave feedback.

Thanks! :)

I started a new blog tonight, since I got laid off this week. I cover general pop culture territory, and christened the new blog with a piece on downloadable games. You can see it at http://shakewellbeforeenjoying.blogspot.com.

Updates have been sparse in the last couple weeks thanks to semester endgame projects and essays. But as soon as finals are over in a few days, the blogging shall recommence with a vengeance! I mostly write about things as opposed to chronicling the boring minutia of my daily life.

Wikia has developed a new blog function, and to help get it kick-started, I've been asked to do a few humor pieces for them. There's lots of pictures and videos, too, for people that like to look at pictures and videos.

Here's one about an old toy! (http://entertainment.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Multimoog/Yum_yum_fun_is_what_it%27s_all_about)

And here's one about wrestler tattoos! (http://prowrestling.wikia.com/wiki/User_blog:Multimoog/Pro_Wrestling_Wiki%27s_Top_Ten_Worst_Wrestler_Tatt oos) (I know, I know, it's a top ten list - we're all destined to become that which we hate.)

Please enjoy them! <bow>

Hey, is there a more current version of this list somewhere or is this just woefully abandoned?

Phenwah, DemoWeasel, and I are all collaborating on a gamesblog! Right now it's just a WordPress archive of our Let's Plays, but reviews, podcasts, and other stuff will be there soon.
