Once upon a time, a beautiful game was born. It came first to the land of Nihon, far across the western sea, and then traveled to the New World, into our loving embrace. But when the land of Nihon saw our joyous union, it grew angry. It did not want to share such beauty! So the people of Nihon took the game and further refined its beauty. This new gem it kept cradled in its embraced, confident it was guarded from outside eyes.

There was one flaw in this selfish plan: The game could be played in the language of the New World as well as that of Nihon, and though the game was guarded well from the eyes of outsiders, it was not guarded perfectly. It could be attained... for a price.

Hey guys, we're gonna play

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-001.jpg

I'm going to skip the long and painful story of trying to get a way of playing a Region 2 game. The moral of that untold story is don't try to mod a system yourself, even if the modding processing in question claims to be easy and you can't possibly void your warranty doing it. Those are ugly lies.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-002.jpg

Egads!

The main difference between the two versions of the game is the leveling system. The Sphere Grid is sort of a compromise between the class system of old and the do-anything systems of more recent games. You guide the characters along paths around a huge grid, picking up stat boosts and abilities. Everybody is on the same grid but they can't cross into each others areas without certain uncommon-to-rare items.

Final Fantasy X: International has a second grid layout available, the Expert Grid. On that grid, everyone starts in a central area and can go wherever the hell you want. They're positioned to follow their original roles but it's very easy to mix things up.

We're going to be using that Expert Grid and you guys are going to be telling me how to guide everyone's development. You can even make the girls with crappy weapons into tanks if you like, though I have no idea how effective that will be. I'll go into that more when we get to that tutorial (but feel free to voice ideas before then).

Other changes in this version include a few new abilities, particularly a way to get exactly the spheres (for use on the Sphere Grid) you need. There are also new extra-powerful bosses to maybe tackle and some number rebalancing stuff I'm not that concerned with.

Now let's play? Almost!

You know how this game is in English? We gotta tell the game that's what we want in Japanese. And just for the heck of it, the Sphere Grid selection is in Japanese too.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-003.jpg

You can change the language later from the options menu but it's a good long time before you can get into the menu. All the dialog is in English regardless so don't be fooled! Subs is where it's at.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-004.jpg

Now? Yes now.

Game start!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-005.jpg

The End of the World. An inauspicious way to begin our Tale. Weapons of War lie in a heap, cast aside. Could it be? Have our Heroes already given up? What kind of dreadful opening is this?! Is the Writer really going to use Random Capitalization throughout?!!

Cradled in the shadow of a small hill, our seven heroes gather around a tiny campfire. Though near in proximity, they are far scattered in thought. The sun slowly falls in the sky and the Glittermites come out to play. Yet even the sparkling dance of the Glittermites in the air around them cannot lift their weary spirits.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-006.jpg

No words are exchanged as one among them, a beautiful blond amazoness of a young woman, rises from the circle. A second girl, garbed in such lovely clothes none in the world could resist trying them on given the opportunity, wants to say something to her but can't find the words. The fair valkyrie pats her on the shoulder as if to say "I know. I know."

She climbs to the top of the hill to survey the devastated landscape while there is still light to do so. Though by all rights hope should be but a distant memory, the girl gazes out with eyes filled to the brim with that light but intense feeling mixed with thick, syrupy determination. Things will not end this way, she is certain. For this is Her Story.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-007.jpg

Far from that ruined land is a glorious city where towers brush the clouds and every window glitters brightly with an inner light. It is a City of the Future. In one corner of the city, a crowd gathers, twinging with excitement, waiting for the arrival of someone who must be pretty darn cool. "Oh my gosh" one of them breathlessly exclaims when at last she appears. It's her! The heir to the Blitzball Throne!

Ten years ago, the last World Champion disappeared off the face of the whole freaking planet. Now it's time for his daughter, in her Blitzball debut, to remind everybody what full contact water soccer is all about.

Desperate for some tangible evidence with their brush with divinity, the fans beg her to sign whatever sports paraphernalia they have at hand. Dear readers, I must now turn to you for guidance. Who is this most beauteous lady? This Diva of Blitz? (Limit 8 characters.)

Me too! But I'm gonna give it a shot. No way I'm gonna plan to tackle FFX-2 though. That would be guaranteeing I never make it past Luca.

Tally so far:
4 Meg Ryan
1 GRUNHLDA
1 TIDE-US
1 Sally

And here I actually passed on a chance to make a Meg Ryan joke in the first post!

Another vote for Sally. Incidentally, do the characters ever refer to him by name? In the text-only dialogue, at least? I... I don't think they do. At least, I don't remember.

1 GRUNHLDA
1 TIDE-US
1 Hey, you

Clearly I'm going to be making Meg Ryan jokes for a very very long time regardless. @_@ I'll put off playing further until tomorrow morning at least.

And no one ever refers to Tidus by name except in Kingdom Hearts. It's mostly what I have to call Tidus for this LP.

But anyways I'm up for more Meg Ryan jokes. "Hey, you" also amuses me but if there's no comma then there's no point.

I think we're going with Sally then. Who am I to argue with produce? And this means I don't have to watch a whole bunch of Meg Ryan movies to make jokes about them. Woo!

'Course I played through to the first save point as Meg Ryan so now I need to do it a third time as Sally (first was Pants but I'm glad to avoid that cliche :p)

Update tomorrow hopefully!

Sally, Sally,
She's our girl!
She'll win this game;
She'll save the world!

Oh dear readers, I'm afraid I must confide this clumsily strung together cheer will prove far more prophetic than anyone present at the time could possibly imagine. We shall allow them their remaining time in peaceful ignorance however.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-010.jpg

The youngest of Sally's worshippers show great impudence, demanding a mini-game tutorial well before schedule. Sally does not have time for their immature antics. Sally has a tournament to win. Before she can tell the children just where to put their Blitzballs, a strange Egyptian child makes a cryptic comment about Sally having plans this evening anyway. She doesn't remember anything like that but it doesn't sound like a lie...

Sally's thoughts are too firmly directed towards Blitzball for her to think too hard on that, or even wonder why (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate) there might be an Egyptian child on a non-Earth planet like hers.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-011.jpg

On the road betwixt home and stadium, a huge billboard featuring the manliest of men is posted on the side of a building. Despite a resemblance approaching zero, that man is Sally's own father, Jecht. He disappeared ten years ago, yet still makes regular appearances in advertising all across Zanarkand. Sally's own face has only appeared in a few adverts - and only in her home district.

Sally will prove she's better than you, old man! One day... One day!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-012.jpg

Sally runs through the next screen as fast as she can, trying to avoid the ramblings of an old radio personality who's still obsessed with Jecht. Shut up, Zanar! This is why they don't let you say anything for the rest of the game!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-013.jpg

Sally awaits the beginning of the final match alone, in the darkness out of view of the crowds. Drops of water trickle down her supple form. Her pre-match ritual does not involve her teammates in the least. Somewhere nearby, they are going over plays one last time. Sally does not join them; they would only pull her down. Alone, she breaths slowly in and out, listening to the sounds of the stadium. The roar of the crowds, the turning gears of the roof opening, the crackle of the Blitzbubble expanding...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-014.jpg

Some people will tell you water and electricity don't mix. Those people are dirty liars.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-015.jpg

Drink up this vision of Blitz bliss, dear readers, for this may be the last time you will witness such a magnificent performance in this noble sport. Because I suck at it.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-016.jpg

At last, it is Sally's chance to prove her pure unadulterated awesomeness. Scoring points can only achieve a certain level of fame. True worship is earned through scoring while looking cooler than anyone else. By Sally's estimate, leaping out of the water to bicycle kick the ball into the opposing goal ought to earn her a shitton of coolness points.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-017.jpg

Typical.

Freaking typical.

Everything was going so well, so a giant bubble monster has to attack the stadium. Perhaps it wants to mate with the Blitzbubble, perhaps it just wants to screw with Sally's life, regardless it rips everything to pieces.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-018.jpg

Sally awakens strangely unharmed, though the same cannot be said for the structure around her. A surprising population of the stadium has also survived and flees the area in ones and threes. They ignore their fallen goddess and flee for their own lives. What happened to their love? Their worship? Was it all a lie? Sally would plot vengeance against her fickle fanbase but it seems vengeance is already being carried out around her.

There is one person in the chaos who seems totally unalarmed by any of this and though it has been some time, Sally recognizes him. Her dad's old buddy, Auron, telltale white carton hanging from his belt. "What are you doing here?" she asks him. "Sally doesn’t think your 2% is going to help anyone here."

"Never underestimate the power of milk!" the grizzled milkman barks. "Now follow me."

Elfir

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-019.jpg

For a moment, it seems Sally has lost track of him. Panic can do that to a girl, even one as awesome as Sally. Suddenly the Egyptian boy reappears. Time stands still as the boy utters words of reassurance that really don't do the trick. Studies show stopping time does not, in fact, help people absorb what's going on around them more efficiently.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-020.jpg

Sally catches up to the old bastard. No wonder she lost track of him: He is the only person stupid enough to run towards the danger! As if it might convince her of his sanity, he directs her attention towards the horrible tentacle monster ravaging a nearby skyscraper.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-021.jpg

Somehow this is not what Sally imagined "sin" being during Sunday School classes, but she finally understands why it is something to be avoided. So why is she allowing herself to be led to Sin?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-022.jpg

All those birthdays missed due to work or death or some other minor obstacle and this is her present? The worst sword in the world? Thanks dad! All that Blitzball practice is sure to come in handy wielding it too!

"I hope you know how to use it," Auron comments, as if he didn't just see her struggle to even lift the thing. Now Sally hates you almost as much as her dad, milkman.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-023.jpg

Sally discovers she's actually pretty good at hitting things with the pointy end of her new weapon. Auron's better though. When Sally hits pod monsters they turn into sparkles. When Auron hits pod monsters they explode sparkles! It turns out war is a lot less gruesome than advertised.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-024.jpg

Auron charges right up to the tentacle monster in the road and Sally, having not watched enough anime to know any better, follows. Every swing of the sword cuts off an excess flailing black tentacle until only one remains. Writhing, it shrivels up and dies.

Sally is momentarily distracted by a shiny object.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-025.jpg

Yay a save sphere! Sixteen minutes indeed. I don't want to think about how long it's actually been getting to this point... Auron charges into battle, heedless of the shiny free healing bauble.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-026.jpg

Right into a bajillion pod monsters. Sally wonders if she would have been better off staying at the stadium but it’s too late to turn back now. Auron's strategy shifts focus from hitting pod monsters to hitting things that might explode. Oh well, not like the authorities will be able to pin the additional damage costs on Sally anyway...

BOOM!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-027.jpg

Sally isn't nearly as comfortable flying through the air out of fire as she is flying through the air out of water, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Once again Auron proves that being high level means never having to look helpless or weak, as he lifts Sally into the air with one hand. He holds the girl up to the sky, an offering to Sin. "Sin fhtagn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu)!"

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-028.jpg

Next time: Under Da Sea and the Sphere Grid!

Blub blub

What...

What's going on?

Is this Zanarkand? Underwater?

Who...? Auron? No that's...

Me?

I think that's me, when I was a kid. Why?

What is this place? Nothing makes sense...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-030.jpg

Sally awakens on a rock in the middle of nowhere. What a queer dream I've just had, she thinks and looks around. Perhaps I'm still dreaming.

"This is no dream, Sally," says the bird perched above her. "The world has undergone many changes whilst you lay sleeping. You must soon find your way in this changed world."

"What? You can talk?" The bird stares at the sputtering girl. "Is this Zanarkand? Is this all that's left of my home?!"

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-031.jpg

"Safe travels, daughter of aqua," the bird says and flies to whence Sally cannot follow.

"Hey!" Sally shouts after it. "HEY!!" It does not stray from its course. Suddenly, for the first time in her life, Sally finds herself truly alone.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-032.jpg

Sally swims through the flooded ruins, trying and largely failing to make sense of it. She finds weird alien poetry carved into a pillar and spies a huge statue of some kind of nobleman beneath the waters. Though far from an expert on artsy stuff, Sally is pretty sure she's never heard of anything like that in Zanarkand.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-033.jpg

She traverses the stone walkway above the water and before her hair has even ceased dripping, the walkway falls out from under her. She plummets into the water below, her third fall from a great height in as many installments. Sally does not like this pattern.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-034.jpg

The native creatures of this place do not like Sally. Three giant fish monsters attack her and Sally discovers sword fighting underwater is remarkably similar to sword fighting above water. Also three opponents is far preferable to infinity plus one.

Having discovered their helpless prey is actually a fierce warrior, the third and final fish monster makes a risky move. There is a spell that has been passed down through the generations of the Fishkin Clan. None who have cast it have survived to tell of it but the fish monster, faced with his own mortality, is willing to take that chance. It casts Summon Bigger Fish (http://darthsanddroids.net/episodes/0033.html).

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-035.jpg

A bigger fish appears out of nowhere and chomps down on the fish monster. It gurgles dying words as it is spit aside but Sally knows not its language. It sounds something like, "Blub blub." As it dies, the fish monster sees itself being avenged: The bigger fish turns to devour the warrior girl.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-036.jpg

Swim swim, fast as you can!
Can't catch me,
Oh shit maybe you can!

A lesser person would find herself in the bigger fish's belly but not Sally. Sally maneuvers through the water, cutting back past it faster than it can turn around, yet still barely keeping ahead of the beast. She spies a flooded passage, too narrow for the bigger fish to chase her through and makes a break for it. Blitzball doesn't have anything on this kind of aquatic workout!

Sally isn't sure how she made it into that passage alive. The bigger fish isn't sure either, though it's pretty peeved about it. I'm certainly not sure - I swear Sally was inside its mouth for a second there. Nevertheless, the end is not yet upon us by a long shot.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-037.jpg

Ha ha ha, Sally! You so funny! Now stop narrating and get back in your cage.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-038.jpg

The bigger fish works out its anger on Sally's escape route, and as a result Sally finds herself sealed inside. The air is breathable, if a bit stale, but the most pressing issue is the temperature. The cold didn't bother Sally out in the water but now, with her wet clothes clinging to her and her breath plainly visible before her, it's undeniable. She's going to freeze to death in this place.

Or rather she would but this is her story so that's just not permitted.

Hey look! Flint and tinder! Handy being the main character, eh?

Unbeknownst to Sally, the Withered Bouquet she used to fuel her fire was made long long ago from magic herbs. She falls asleep in the warmth of her fire and dreams a strange dream.

She sees a vision of the home she left behind... of the day Auron appeared out of nowhere for the first time since her mother died. Auron never hid that his visits were to Sally's mother, not Sally. Sally was used to the adult men in her life paying her little mind.

"It was a bad call. Your team lost because of you."

Sally had no intention of taking his crap. She'd done just fine without anybody trying to play father figure to her. "That's why you're here?" She laughed. She's pretty sure she laughed.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-040.jpg

What the?! The sudden appearance of the Egyptian boy in her dream wakes Sally with a start. What's with that kid anyway? Sally discovers a more pressing matter when she looks to the fire. It's dying fast. She looks around in a panic. There's gotta be something else she can burn! Crap, the whole place is a leaky mess, Sally was lucky to find what she did.

As the light vanishes, a terrible skittering noise echoes through the chamber.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-041.jpg

Sally is past the point of being horrified by the weird creatures that keep trying to kill and/or eat her. In fact, the Sally from before the game wouldn't believe her own reaction to the thing pouncing down upon her. "That'll burn." Might even burn tasty.

Still weak from battling fish monsters and hunger, Sally nonetheless hacks away at it. Desperation has heightened her senses, for she easily evades every attack it makes. Their duel is interrupted by a door exploding inwards.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-042.jpg

Four men and one woman enter, all masked and frightenly well-equipped. The woman steps ahead of the group and spits at the monster, "L'suh, mad'c tyhla."

Sally isn't sure what to make of these strangers but they're human and that's better than anything else she's encountered recently. Plus she seems to want to help! Sally isn't sure why the men with guns aren't helping but that is soon the least of her worries.

The woman throws a grenade at the beast, then snatches a replacement off its body... somewhere. All the while Sally smacks it with her sword as best she can but her good luck avoiding hits has passed. Despite the help of a healing potion chucked at her by the woman, she falls before the creature's claws. The last things she sees before succumbing to oblivion are the creature being reduced to bubbles and the men hauling her off the ground...

I forgot to touch the save sphere for free healing. -_-;

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-043.jpg

Waking to guns pointed to your head isn't much fun, our young heroine discovers. Especially when her captors speak a completely unknown language. She gets to her feet and gets shoved with the butt of a gun! "Hey that hurts!" she exclaims. He doesn't seem to understand so she tries another approach. "Uh, no me yammo... ouche." Also no. Can't say she didn't try.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-044.jpg

Two more march out to meet her. A mohawk guy and the woman - girl, actually, now that Sally is able to see her face. The guy pantomimes like an idiot for a bit and Sally, bless her adorably empty head, can't make any more sense out of it than the spoken words.

"You look retarded," she mutters.

"And you apparently are retarded," the girl unexpected responds. "Bad manners, anyway."

"He says you can stay if you make yourself useful," she translates, ignoring Sally's shock and embarrassment. Sally is eager to agree. "Oh and lemme show you something." The girl proceeds to go through the most important tutorial of the game: the Sphere Grid.

Expert Sphere Grid (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/197344/45407)!

That's a lot to take in so I'm going to try my hand at explaining it.

Instead of levels, characters gain Sphere Levels which are basically movement points to go around that huge chart. You spend magic spheres, speed spheres, ability spheres, etc to pick up the things you land on. Running out of those isn't much of an issue except maybe with ability spheres early on. Backtracking costs sphere levels so we want to avoid that when possible. There are also a few other kinds of spheres, the most important right now being Lock Nodes and Key Spheres. We can't go past them until we get Key Spheres and that will hamper our freedom of movement somewhat, but we'll manage.

The main areas of the sphere grid are as such:
White Magic - Healing and protection
Black Magic - Attack magic
Status Attack - Physical attacks that also cause status ailments (like silence)
Stat Break - Physical attacks that also knock down defense or strength, etc
Speed Stuff - Haste, Slow, miscellaneous stuff. Really scattered around the grid, rather than in an obvious path
Wealth Acquisition - Steal, Use item (i.e. grenades, not potions), money stuff

That's the approximate order the areas are in, clockwise around the grid. Characters can cross the center of the grid from the get-go or cross with into neighboring paths further out. Example: Sally cuts through the middle of the grid to study Black Magic, then decides to change majors and study White Magic.

The center of the grid has a lot of empty space, which is lame, but there's +2 Defense, +2 Strength, and +200 HP between the magic sections and the physical sections, which is a nice boost if we wanna send one of the default spellcasters over but not that exciting for any would-be spellcasters.

For the record: We can't send anyone across the center directly into Wealth Acquisition until we get a Key Sphere. Circling around further out, Sally is 21 sphere levels from Steal. The next closest is 27 sphere levels away.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-tutorial02.jpg

Right now Sally doesn't have any Sphere Levels because she managed to die in the only experience-netting battle so far. Oopsy. But by the end of the next post she should be moving along so now's the time to decide which way to send her. North goes into the start of the Speed Stuff and Cheer (strength + defense buff) in the immediate future, south goes into the sparce center circle and Jinx (Accuracy + Evasion + Critical rate debuff) in the immediate future. North allows her to circle over into Stat Break or Wealth Acquisition not far in. South can take her to anything else.

So what kind of girl do we think Sally is? Feel free to be as specific or broad as you like but I'm planning to stop for suggestions at crossroads periodically so grand scale plans might not get fully implemented.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-tutorial03.jpg

For the sake of comparison, here's the starting stats for Sally and ???? (the girl). Sally's pretty well rounded, with less focus on magic than average. ???? appears to be focused on acting more frequently. In that one battle they fought together, ???? was getting nearly twice as many hits as Sally but not nearly as hard.

I always wondered just... why, when I saw Rikku's salvage and exploration outfit. Yeah, belts, Nomura, whatever. But they look mighty uncomfortable.

...why is Obi Wan calling Jar-Jar "Sally" in that Star Wars comic? Amazing synchronicity?

I vote Sally heads for Wealth Acquisition, and unlocks some delicious Steal.

...why is Obi Wan calling Jar-Jar "Sally" in that Star Wars comic? Amazing synchronicity?

The premise of that webcomic is that, in a world where Star Wars never existed, the plot of Star Wars movies is being created as a D&D-type roleplaying session. In the comic, one of the players' parents couldn't find a babysitter for his younger sister, so he was forced to take her along to one of the gaming sessions, and the GM let her invent a character (Jar Jar) to keep her occupied.

That Sally was my only concern with naming Tidus Sally here, but Sally won the vote!

Rikku's flat enough that outfit probably isn't as uncomfortable as it would be on, say, Lulu. But there's still no good reason for it. Sally has proven you can swim fast without being aerodynamic in the least.

Within seconds of being given free reign to wander, Sally picks up some loot. (Highlighted here so it's easier to spot.) With this first Al Bhed Primer, Sally begins her linguistic studies. Now when she talks to the Al Bhed, she can translate Y into A. That's not very helpful but it adds up after a while. It probably belonged to ???? before, but Sally doesn't think ???? will mind her borrowing it.

The three males on deck have varying levels of usefulness.
Useful: The leftmost one gives Sally three free potions. ???? will need them ALL.
Useless: The center one swears at Sally in his crazy space language.
Annoying: The rightmost one forces Sally to sit through the Sphere Grid tutorial again if she pretends to understand him.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-046.jpg

???? goes over the plan and now that it's been pointed out, I can't stop staring at her boobs. What is WITH those straps? That can't be comfortable. Anyway, these guys are here to salvage something or other from the underwater ruins. The first order of business is to swim down and flip the power switch. ???? and Sally are the only ones going on this little expedition, I assume because the men are too chicken to fight fish people.

With the implication helping will lead to eating, Sally is so eager she dives on in without even waiting to be told. She flips a thumbs up, without considering the gesture might not mean the same thing to these foreign folk.

These underwater areas are a real pain to screencap because you gotta hold down X with one hand to dive lower, plus moving around with the other, and I don't have a third hand to hit the screenshot button.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-047.jpg

But this "screen shattering at the start of battle" shot is pretty awesome, eh?

???? produces yet more fully functioning grenades from fish monsters and Sally decides that's pretty cool. Makes a mental note to ask ???? about learning that trick when they get back to the surface. Player stockpiles them for selling fun time later.

Other than the occasional hungry fishies, it's pretty straightforward getting inside the ruins.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-048.jpg

Little does ???? know but she recruited a technical genius in Sally. Sally smashes computers with her fists until they start working again. You gotta show the computer who's boss, you know?

"But wouldn't turning on underwater machinery be a bad idea?" you ask. Of course not! As previously stated, electricity and water are the best of friends. In fact, none of the sercuitry is even damaged and the whole place lights up like Christmas!

Unfortunately not everyone is pleased with Sally and ????'s little light show.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-049.jpg

TENTACLE RAPE ATTACK!

This is the traditional "sometimes you don't attack" boss found near the beginning of many Final Fantasy games. But in this case you don't get punished with massive damage for breaking the rules, you just don't get the option of hitting Mr Tentacle Monster sometimes. Good time to chow down on some Potions. OMNOMNOM. Tastes like healthy!

Slash slash explodey slash! Swimmy swim. Slash slash explodey slash!

After a couple rounds of that, Sally and ???? change tactics. Mr Tentacle Monster keeps trying to back attack these innocent maidens and dammit, they're not that kind of girls. "Blub blub," says ????. "Blub blub," Sally agrees. They swim around to either side of Mr Tentacle Monster, blocking him in so they can have their sharp pointy way with him. It's sparkle time, buddy!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-050.jpg

Once all the scary monsters are gone, the brave menfolk swim down to investigate the ruins. Nobody told Sally what they're looking for and she's really freaking hungry by now, so she heads back to the surface.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-051.jpg

HEY I KNOW THAT WORD!!!

Those meanie-heads don't let Sally come in and attempt to understand their talk of airships. She just wants free and immediate access to any location in the world... C'mon guys...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-052.jpg

???? is nice and brings Sally some food. Sally is so excited she breaks out into dance. When she's done and finishes scarfing down her meal (without even a fork!), the girls have a little chat.

The girl introduces herself as Rikku, an Al Bhed. Al Bhed all speak that wacky language but Rikku learned Common, unlike most of her Clan. She implies there's some racism in the world against her people but Sally's a little too self-centered to take in too much of non-Sally information at once.

Sally tells her life story and Rikku has the nerve to say it's a lie! Except the bit with Sin, which Sally figured was the least believable part. Zanarkand was destroyed a thousand years ago by Sin and nobody's lived there since. What is this, some kind of stupid time travel story? (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-028.jpg)

"Nah, it's probably just Sin's toxin," Rikku explains. "People who get too close to Sin and survive are usually messed up in the head for a while. That's probably what happened." Little does Rikku know this will become Sally's excuse for anything and everything she does wrong for at least the next six months.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-053.jpg

She has one of those straps down her butt crack too! What is wrong with this girl?! More importantly, what kind of sick freak designed this outfit for a fifteen-year-old girl?

Rikku figures since Sally remembers playing Blitzball, she might have actually played for some team before getting all confused in the head. She's not very clear on the details but if Sally travels to Luca, there's a chance she'll meet someone who knows her. Yay, we have our next destination!

I've known some fifteen-year-old girls who would design that outfit for themselves. One of them was my craziest girlfriend ever, which I really should have foreseen.

I really like how you don't (typically) notice it in your first playthrough, but then, you realize that they're digging up the Fahrenheit in later ones. Sometimes, little touches like that help to flesh out the game's backstory quite nicely. What could have happened during the war? Was there a battle near Baaj/Besaid, and if there was, whose side was the airship on? Was it shot down (or smashed down with a giant flipper) so it ended up embedded in rock a thousand years ago?

The girl introduces herself as Rikku, an Al Bhed. Al Bhed all speak that wacky language but Rikku learned Common, unlike most of her Clan. She implies there's some racism in the world against her people but Sally's a little too self-centered to take in too much of non-Sally information at once.

Once again, Sally finds herself adrift in the seas of Spira... This one, at least, is far warmer than the last. Bright and friendly, easy to see what's going on without messing with the brightness/contrast settings... The serenity is interrupted by the smack of a Blitzball against the back of Sally's head.

Oh that familiar feeling.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-056.jpg

Sweet! Finally fate has taken Sally someplace cool. A Blitzball team waves to her from the beach. Sally's soon-to-be adoring public. She effortlessly pulls off the Jecht Sally Shot. They are suitably impressed, as well they should.

Let them wait a bit. Sally wants to enjoy this lovely grotto. The clear blue water, the sandy beaches, the loot in an obscure inlet that won't be useful for a very long time... Man, I could really use a vacation.

Okay, back to the story.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-057.jpg

At the behest of her adoring fans, Sally performs the Sally Shot again. That's right, boys, she's beautiful and consistently awesome. The rooster-headed man knows a professional when he sees one and asks which team Sally plays for. "The Zanarkand Abes!" ... Awkward. Rikku told her not to say that kind of thing. This is why.

Activate Generic Excuse #1!

"I, uh, got too close to Sin's toxin? So... I don't know what I'm talking about? Yeah, that..."

Whew, it works. "You been 'round Sin? You lucky to be alive, brudda!" says rooster- head. "Praise be -" Drat, perfectly nice place and it's gotta be inhabited by religious folk. "- to Yevon!" Wait, what's Yevon? Shoot, Rikku used a word like that before Sally steered the conversation back to more interesting matters (her). Maybe she should have listened after all....

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-058.jpg

"I got crazy high accuracy, but rest o' my speed's shit, ya? An' I attack with a Blitzball you know I'm hardcore, ya?" Ya.

"Um, right." Don't try to fill Sally's little head with gameplay information, Wakka. "So why do you keep calling me 'brudda'?" Sally asks. "I'm not anyone's brother."

"Ah, sorry 'bout dat, just what I call all my friends," Wakka answers. "No offense, ya know?" Well... okay. Still seems weird. Sally's stomach chimes in with its own contribution to the conversation. Damn girl, you just ate last scene!

"Hungry? Okay, we head back to the village, ya? I get you somethin'!" He might be a little weird and religious, but the offer of free food makes up for a lot.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-059.jpg

Sally figures Wakka might be a good candidate to verify Rikku's story of Zanarkand's destruction. Wakka verifies it alright. Adds a good dose of fire and brimstone to the mix for good measure, too.

Way back when, people used machine to do all their work for them, getting lazy and corrupt. Sin was sent as punishment for all that sin (creative naming, guys!) and destroyed all the big technically advanced cities in the world. But Sin didn't stop there. Sin still wanders the waters of the world, destroying anyplace people gather.

Sally wonders if she'd be able to take the Sin Express back home if she found it again, but finds her heart somehow calmed by having her questions answered. She can probably get along here and now if she has to. Pretty beaches and Blitzball. What else does a girl need? A man.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-060.jpg

Oh Wakka, you scamp!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-061.jpg

I think Wakka may have a crush on Sally. He shows it like a ten-year-old boy, but it's kinda cute in a way. Sally's flattered and caught off guard by the situation. She's always been to preoccupied with her career to bother with men (except hating dad!!) so she's not sure what to do. Thank goodness the blue of the water hides her blushes.

Wakka makes the first move but it's not the kind of move Sally might have expected. He asks her to play for his team in the upcoming Blitzball tournament. Oh. Well, that's flattering too, she guesses... just in a "duh" kind of way. "Yeah, sure," she murmurs and continues swimming toward Wakka's village.

Behind her, Wakka whoops with joy at the prospect of actually scoring a point or two. Thankfully the water muffles the sound so Sally doesn't have to hear.

As they approach Wakka's village, Sally wonders if she should have come here after all. Everyone seems to be subtly threatening her! First the Anti-Sin Coalition, then even Wakka! Wakka only likes religious girls (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/athiestsally.jpg) it seems. ;_;

"Sin... toxin..." Generic Excuse #1 continues to be Sally's salvation.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-063.jpg

The locals even use the excuse to rationalize Sally's quirks and gaps in knowledge.

In the Anti-Sin Coalition Headquarters, Sally is given the usual recruitment lecture. They are a world-wide militia dedicated to fighting Sin, started by some dude eight hundred years ago, and they're still fighting Sin.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-064.jpg

Yes Sally, these guys suck. But you don't have to be so blunt about it. I mean, do you think you could do better? I didn't think so.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-065.jpg

In the temple, Sally gets another lecture. This time it's about summoners. And high summoners. And Aeons. And this "Lord Braska" guy. Sally's eyes glaze over before the lecture's through. Too... much... talking. Want.. lunch...

Sally leaves to hunt down Wakka and the promised meal.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-066.jpg

You bastard! And don't call Sally "man" either.

Wakka suggests Sally take a nap until lunchtime. B-but Sally has trouble sleeping when she's hungry! And isn't it weird to sleep in Wakka's hut when they've only just met? People might talk! Even if there aren't doors in this village...

Sally lies down, intending to just pretend to sleep - just until Wakka leaves so she can raid the pantry - but finds herself drifting off into another flashback dream instead.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-067.jpg

It was the day after Sally's father disappeared. Her mother hadn't slept the entire time. Word of Jecht's disappearance spread quickly and some fans began searching even before the authorities even. Sally hated her father even more then, because even in his absence he was the center of attention.

"Hate... hate... haaaate..." Sally mutters in her sleep but thankfully there is no one there to hear her. Wakka has slipped away while she slept. She riffles through Wakka's stuff till she finds something to snack on (ew, fish jerky), then heads out in search of her host.

Something about Wakka always bothered me. It's not the religious fanaticism. It's not the idea of Hawaiian Bender (bite his shiny metal ass, ya?) It's not the fact that the Besaid Aurochs' pants are designed to drag them to watery graves (maybe that's why they suck so hard?)

It's the fact that his rooster crest stays upright even though he regularly spends half his day underwater.

Whatever kind of hair gel Cloud et al use, it has nothing on Wakka's product of choice.

His HAIR is Zell 2.0, but I liked Wakka. I think most of the hate gets hung up on the accent and his close devotion to religious dogma (not exactly a "fire and brimstone" fanatic, but he does get quite vocal about machina, Al Bhed, and everything in between.) However, even that is given appropriate character development later on.

I love Wakka, because I think his voice acting is seriously pretty great. I thought this before I knew he was Bender, even!

The characters with accents all have the best voice acting in this game. O'aka, Rin, that old scholar guy, etc.

I really liked Wakka (okay, I stopped after Tidus finds out he isn't real, bear with me). His relationship to the religious thing is quite interesting.

Ti-Sally, on the other hand, is only interesting as long as she talks about her oedipal relationship. With Yuna or, uh, the world, is another thing. Sigh...

Question: Anybody have a burning desire to see the Cloisters of Trials done in detail? That's my sticking point right now. I don't know how I want to deal with it or if I should just gloss over it.

Still on the very-rough writeup of the next one so don't give orders to skip it in anticipation of a sooner update, certainly. :p

Unless you want to show just how mind-numbing running around putting those glowing spheres in the pedestals really is (especially if you want to get the special treasure in each cloister), I'd say gloss over it.

And as for Wakka, the first time I played through FFX I kept imagining Dr. Drakken playing blitzball.

I don't mind them, especially because of your writing style... but I can see how they would be a giant PITA to transcribe (especially when you have several Cloisters to push through.) Feel free to take whatever route you're more comfortable with.

I like the fact that Wakka can mean 3 different things depending on how many times it's said.

Wakka (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Characters_of_Final_Fantasy_X_and_X-2#Wakka)

Wakka Wakka (http://youtube.com/watch?v=gcBwbd7QBAk)

Maybe the interesting parts of the cloisters (ALL NONE OF THEM if I remember right) but nobody needs to suffer through those things all the way.

Sally tracks Wakka to the temple where, no, he is not holding a sandwich for her. He talks in hushed tones to the bald priest guy, so Sally knows this is the perfect time to interrupt. "So... are we having lunch sometime soon?"

"The summoner hasn't returned from the trial," Wakka replies. Not an acceptable answer, try again. "It's been a day already. Gonna wait till the summoner returns, brudda." Translation: Maybe.

Sally has little confidence in her ability to scavenge in this village after the fish jerky. "So... When the summoner returns, is there a celebration or something? Maybe a... feast?"

"Ya, big party then," Wakka nods.

"Right then. Be back in a jiffy!" Sally runs up the stairs, into the cloister.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-069.jpg

Welcome to the Cloister of Trials, Round 1.

You got annoying puzzle dungeons in my Final Fantasy! You got Final Fantasy in my annoying puzzle dungeons! Either way, this sucks.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-070.png

This dungeon has three kinds of spheres, and a bunch of identical sphere holes that you get to mix and match. Oh, and you can only carry one at a time. Fun! (http://www.amazon.com/Plan-Toys-53520-Shape-Sort/dp/B0001VUNV4/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1216231835&sr=1-8) Much like an evil piñata, there is also delicious treasure inside, but if you miss it you'd better just reboot and try again, 'cause your next chance is in 40+ hours!

I'm glossing over them but rest assured every time I mention one: I suffered. For you.

Wakka has the right idea. He trails behind Sally as she tries her best to loot the temple, appearing only when she reaches the exit. The temple probably resets once the magic elevator activates, so he's gotta hustle to not get trapped inside. So what's Wakka doing in here anyway? Isn't it forbidden? Something about precepts?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-071.jpg

You could have mentioned that earlier, Wakka. And maybe sounded a bit less like an ass while saying it. Guardians, Wakka explains on the long elevator ride, protect summoners on their long pilgrimage around the world, visiting all the temples before defeating Sin.

So Wakka has two jobs: Guardian and Captain of a really crappy Blitzball team. Why on earth does he introduce himself as a Blitzball captain? Actually scratch that. He wanted to get in Blitzball girl Sally's pants. I forgot.

Deep in the temple's belly, Sally meets the other two guardians of the summoner. The ones who didn't put Blitzball over their duty as guardians.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-072.jpg

What a little bundle of venom she is, hmm? She's not particularly concerned about the presence of a heathen in this sacred place. No, she's pissed at Wakka. Wakka who has the gall to show up after a whole damn day of waiting, just in time to look good in front of the summoner. She has this weird little puppet that resembles a white teddy bear and makes it speak in a shrill voice, mocking Wakka. "Oh, but your team... they need you more right now. I'm fine, really. Thank you Wakka, you've done so much for me!" Wow that's disturbing.

She barely gets started on Sally when the entrance to the inner sanctum opens.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-073.jpg

Everyone turns to behold the summoner in her backlit glory. She stumbles, as if drunk, and perhaps she is. Drunk with power. Unused to the new power twisting about within her, she loses control of her corporeal form, stumbling at the top of the stairs, then falling, falling

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-074.jpg

Caught!

Warrior Cat make sure you land on feet too! =^_^=

Sally inches closer, eager to lay eyes on this summoner who might rival she herself in fame. (Former fame but don't remind her.) It's actually a cute girl, about Sally's own age, in a super pretty outfit. Sally wonders, for a moment, if she could ever pull off that look but dismisses the idea. Sally doesn't fit with any definition of "elegant" she's ever heard and this girl is most definitely elegant.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-075.jpg

And so plucky too! Go you!

The Guardians gather around her like mother hens and despite being right there, doesn't even get a chance to say hi to the summoner. The cluster of bodies is handy, however, when trying to sneak out of the temple behind the big guys without getting in trouble. Nope, wasn't there. Really. Don't stone Sally.

Before the feast, the whole village gathers around the summoner to watch her do some kind of miracle with her sparkly new god power. Wakka drags Sally up for a front row seat, no doubt hoping to inspire some faith in his new gal pal.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-076.jpg

Damn that's sparkly.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-077.jpg

Damn that's horrifying.

Everyone else is in a state of rapture, gazing at this horrible flying abomination. Sally, meanwhile, recoils and makes a horror check (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkham_Horror). To think such an innocent seeming girl could summon such weird beast as that - !

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-078.jpg

That evening, after Sally has thoroughly stuffed herself, Wakka pulls together his team to introduce the new member. Everyone gets really excited over the prospect... Almost too excited, but, well, it is Sally who's joining the team, not your average Blitzer off the sea. After the initial pep talk, it turns to team bonding. These guys have known each other their whole lives; it's kinda hard for Sally to fit in among them and in time she stops trying.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-079.jpg

Sally approaches the gathering around the summoner but they're not as welcoming as the Blitzball team. Her holiness, however, accepts all people of the world, be them goths, giant kitties, or heathens. She excuses herself from the gathering to meet Sally.

"Hi, I'm Sally."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-080.jpg

Gosh this is awkward.

"So... that thing you summoned. That was... neat," Sally struggles to not vocalize her earlier horror.

"Do you... think so?" She seems pleased but hesitant.

"Oh sure!"

Awk-waard.

"... Do you... think I can... become high summoner?" she asks, in time.

Sally nods. She still isn't clear what that means. Maybe something like team captain, but with a team of other summoners. She shudders despite herself at the thought of six of those things from earlier. Please not that.

Yuna doesn't see Sally's discomfort, for at that moment a small child approaches to rescue Yuna from the dirty heathen. Before returning to her circle, Yuna says, "We can... talk more... tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?"

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-081.jpg

Wait, what?! When did Wakka have time to tell her about that "Zanarkand Abes" slip? Is Yuna just humoring Sally or does she believe her from some freaky mystic reason?

As Sally watches Yuna go, Wakka approaches to see what Sally thinks of the summoner.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-082.jpg

Sleep does not come easily to Sally. Her thoughts are too busy, wondering what happened between her and Wakka. Was it her? I mean... why had Wakka freaked out like that? And why had he muttered something like "Sweet Yevon, he's a girl!?" as he fled the hut?

When at last Sally finds sleep, it's restless, thick with more strange dreams.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-084.jpg

Sally finds herself alone on a pier... No, not alone. Yuna is there, waiting for her. "I thought... We must go... The two of us..."

"Are you sure?" Sally asks, though the rational corner of her mind still aware wonders what Yuna is talking about.

"Take me... to Zanarkand."

"HEY!" That peppy voice - Rikku? "I'm taking Sally!"

"But she's... mine!" Yuna counters.

"I, uh, you guys," Sally stammers.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-085.jpg

What? Now dad? "I hate you." He mercilessly mocks Sally, as he always did. "I hate you." Yuna and Rikku are suddenly no longer on Sally's side. They're at dad's. "I hate you." Cheering. What the hell?!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-086.jpg

Though entirely unrested, Sally is grateful to leave sleep behind. What is with all these weird dreams? She never had such vivid dreams back home. Maybe it's something about this place... this time. She shakes her head, trying to free herself of these thoughts. All this thinking is giving her a headache.

The sound of voices comes from outside. Who could still be awake at this hour? She slips out of bed and peeks out the cloth draped doorway.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-087.jpg

The goth chick is chewing out Wakka again, this time directly, not via marionette. It's hard to figure out what they're talking about but it seems to center around someone named "Chappu." "But she needed our help!" Wakka protests but the woman cuts him off with a glare. With a swirl of belts, she stalks off.

Wakka sighs and returns to his hut. Sally doesn't bother pretending she wasn't listening in. That bit at the ended sounded suspiciously like talk of Sally herself, so eavesdropping is absolutely justified. "Who's Chappu?"

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-088.jpg

Er... that's... weird.

Sally is kind of glad things didn't... progress further earlier in the evening. Wakka has some serious issues to deal with and she doesn't particularly want to be how he works through them.

"Look..." how to say it? "I don't know that much about you or anything, but... I'm really glad you've done so much to help me out and..."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-089.jpg

It's amazing what you can come up with smashing the screenshot button constantly. I really liked Kihmari's expressions in that scene too... there's so much going on it's normally hard to notice.

For a bit I was toying with the idea of doing the whole thing that way but it was way too impractical. I like playing with pixels. ^_^

Somewhere around here there's someone you talk to in order to get the only optional overdrive for the aeon we've got. If you leave the island before you get it, you're probably not getting it. (It's technically not gone forever, but then I'd like to see you kill that boss.)

When Sally rolls out of bed the next morning, Wakka and Madam Death are already waiting out in the village square. Wakka presents Sally with a present: An awesome plastic sword!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-090.jpg

"Thanks, this is so much cooler than my father's keepsake sword!" Sally declares and makes plans to pawn Jecht's sword at the first opportunity.

"That's the sword you gave Chappu," the black-hearted witch states.

"No, dat's the sword I tried to give Chappu, ya? Now where'd Yuna?" Okay, but if Wakka tries to dress Sally in Chappu's old clothes she's SO out of here.

Sally looks around, "Maybe she headed to the dock already? I mean, we're all going on the same boat, right?"

"No way," Wakka replies, "We been together since Yuna came to the village ten years ago, like family."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-091.jpg

"You're a Player Character now, you no longer have need of luggage or pockets or changes of clothing," she explains.

"Oh... I guess... you're right..." Yuna says and abandons her suitcase on the steps. The trio leave their childhood home together, perhaps for the last time, Sally following behind.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/ch7-Valeforoverdrive2.jpg

Then Sally darts back into the village to do some last minute errands. She sells off all her potions because some strange intuition tells her there are more available free in the near future. Then Sally steals shopgirl's dog's new toy, a rare and powerful tool of destruction. Yay! Okay, off we go.

The main industry of this island, it seems, is tutorials. The Zombie Queen is finally introduced as Lulu and she likes to make things burn. Wakka can hit stuff that's out of reach with his beachball of death. Yuna performs dark rituals to bring forth monstrous beings bound to fight on her behalf. And Sally hits things real fast. Go team!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-092.jpg

At the overlook at the peak of the island, everybody stops to pray. It's some kinda custom. Oh no worries, Sally. You don't have to pray or anything. It's just a "moment of silence". You can... read or something. We won't hold it against you.

You know how your can will sometimes go crazy and chase invisible monsters around the house and bat at the walls? That's Kimahri. But he's a good kitty, really. He even buries his poop almost all the time!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-095.jpg

Everybody on the island is at the dock to say goodbye to Yuna. Shesh, you'd think she's never coming back. She waves and does the prayer gesture and then we're off to visit distant lands with fewer tutorials and more variety of monsters. Time for sightseeing!!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-096.jpg

Um, anyway Sally goes to hang out with Wakka and get the itinerary.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-097.jpg

Kilika Island has another temple for Yuna to hit up for devil powers and Luca has the Blitzball tournament Wakka's going to be in before quitting. Sorry, "quitting" is too negative a term, isn't it? How about "stepping down" or perhaps "resigning"?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-098.jpg

Sally approaches the crowd around Yuna but can't really get close enough to chat right now. She returns to the fount of knowledge, Wakka, to explain what they were talking about. Yuna is the daughter of Braska the Badass. He's some summoner... badass. Sally imagines it's on par with being the daughter of a Blitzball Badass, so she can probably relate.

Either way, Yuna's busy right now so Sally goes exploring the ship alone.

First Sally meets O'aka the Ass. He insults Sally's fashion sense, says she looks poor, and then begs for money. What a dick. Sally's so mad she goes into the Auroch's bunk and kicks a box (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/ch7-20potions.jpg) twenty times to calm down. Feeling a bit better, Sally learns about the alternative energy sources of Spira in this time period and works on her foreign language studies. Sally is quite studious now (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/ch7-powerroom.jpg), no?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-099.jpg

Ah, more awkward conversation between our leading ladies. "So... you play Blitzball... for Zanarkand... right?"

Sally blushes, "Wakka told you about that, huh? He thinks I'm crazy."

"I don't... think you're... crazy," Yuna smiles mysteriously. "I've heard... about Zanarkand. It has... a stadium that's... all lit up... even at night... and everyone goes... to watch... every game!"

"How do you know about that?" Her description wasn't beyond the scope of imagination - she could just be making fun of Sally - but Sally doesn't think so.

"One of... my father's guardians... told me. His name was... Jecht."

WHAAAAAA! SHOCKING!

"But- That was my dad's name!" Sally's pretty sure she never mentioned her dad since coming here. How could Yuna know that name unless she's really telling the truth?

"Praise be! This must be... the blessing of Yevon! ...It's destiny!" Giddy looks weird in slow motion but that's the closest fit for how Yuna looks. She probably thinks this is her first encounter with a Miracle since becoming a Summoner.

"That doesn't make sense. He disappeared off the coast of Zanarkand over ten years ago," Sally protests.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-101.jpg

"You're... here." Girl's got a point, Sally. Makes sense, even. Jecht was always too much of a jerk to just die. Oh no, he's gotta make Sally's life miserable until the end of freaking time.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-102.jpg

Typical. Sally goes anywhere near water, Sin attacks. Hey Yuna, go ahead and beat Sin now, why don't ya?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-103.jpg

That there is some high quality self-sacrifice. The fire Sin full of harpoons in the vain attempt to protect their families in Kilika. Faced with the prospect of horrible drowning death (or being fish food for those who inexplicably breath underwater), the team decides to fight the beast.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-104.jpg

Remember how Wakka can hit things that are normally out of reach with his beach ball? Yes readers, he is now beating on the all-powerful Elder God with a beach ball. Meanwhile everybody else picks off the Sinbits because they respawn infinitely, providing as much experience and mana and power spheres as I have patience.

Please note: There is no rule against cheesy abuse of the system.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-105.jpg

Sin breaks free of the ship after, say, two thousand hit points? and speeds away in the same approximate direction it was originally headed. I'd say this operation was a success.

Hey wait, where's Sally? Frick!

Our hero Wakka dives into the ocean after his dear almost-girlfriend/brother's-doppleganger.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-106.jpg

I really get a kick out of characters using items in the story, rather than these things being purely game mechanics.

Aqualad and Aqualass fight Evilsquid and more Sinbits. The Sinbits do the same thing except Yuna isn't down here with us to provide free awesome healing so it's not the best time to play Harvest Sin.

Aqualad overdrives the crap out of Evilsquid. Yes, it's ice element but I'm proud to get an element to line up at all. Everybody safely back on board, the ship continues on to Kilika...

Okay boys and girls, it's time to decide what all these new party members are gonna do!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/statusscreen1.jpg

Holy crap they have high evasion!

Yuna: Fights with a fancy stick and starts with Cure and Esuna. Her summons pick up any stat boosts she gets so that's something to keep in mind.

Lulu: Fights with plushies and starts with the first level of elemental magic spells. Her overdrive is a black magic machine gun but it sucks so don't worry about that too much.

I have no idea if Yuna or Lulu's weapons are too gimped to be effective even if they go through a physical path but I'm willing to find out.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/statusscreen2.jpg

Kimahri: Fights with spears which are all "Piercing", meaning they go through high defense like... turtle shells or whatever. Very handy. Kimahri gets screwed on the default grid because he's set up to go anywhere but has to claw his way out of his crappy grid to get there first. Overdrives blue magic/rages, which probably use strength or magic depending on which rage is used. A note on him: I went ahead and picked up Extract Ability because he starts so close to it, so he's slightly closer to white magic than anything else. *shrug*

Wakka: As noted in this battle, fights with a ball that can hit anything so he's very well-suited to hitting things. To start he just has Dark Attack, which causes blindness.

Sally is on her way toward picking up Steal. That'll take a while but when I get it (believe me you'll know), we'll decide what direction to point her next.

In my first playthrough, Brotherhood made it almost all the way to the endgame before I changed over to a customized sword. Still, Tidus was my second hardest-hitter, so there must be something to it after all.

...knowing what Sally doesn't, that's amazingly cold of Lulu. One can imagine what went through Yuna's head* while packing, knowing what the Pilgrimage would lead to, and then she has to leave it behind because of what the Pilgrimage entails.

It's stuff that flies over your head, the first time around. Like Sally, you think it's just an odd quirk or Lulu being awfully practical.

* Yeah, yeah. "Air," someone will say.

Yeah. Makes you think there's some sort of deeper connection between them, donnit?

Okay boys and girls, it's time to decide what all these new party members are gonna do!

My first time through, Lulu was abandoned because I never used black magic and she looks like a large-breasted zombie. The idea of her freaky little plushies ripping monsters to pieces amuses me.

I'm gonna make an effort to use everyone this playthrough regardless, mostly to see what happens to characters depending on where they go.

Brotherhood's pretty damn nice, actually. Three empty slots to play with anyway. I don't remember what I did weapons-wise my first playthrough.

...didn't notice it when she was animated, but that still frame of Yuna makes her look all sorts of weird...there's something seriously wrong with her eyes.

That may be because Yuna has heterochromia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterochromia) i.e. one green eye and one blue eye as can be seen here in Elfir's screencap.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-102.jpg

Minor spoiler: If I remember right the reason that Yuna has differently colored eyes--besides making her look exotic and marketable--is because Braska is human and Yunalesca was Al Bhed.

I don't recall Yunalesca being her mother. Just her namesake, I think.

I don't recall more spoilerage

You know, I think you're right (and more importantly so does the FF (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Yuna) wiki (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Yunalesca)). I guess that the 4 years since I played FFX has allowed some of the details of the plot to fade from my recollection.

Yeah, I remember that bit (especially noticeable since it only brings up the color, and not the other trait that makes those eyes unique to the race.) I was going off their shape and proportions relative to her face in the FMV model.

As to the spoilers:I always thought Braska and Cid's Unnamed Sister simply named Yuna in honor of Lady Yunalesca.

Assuming I can tear myself away from Final Fantasy 4 DS the next update should be this weekend. But before I do any sphere grid stuff, let's review:

Lulu - Stat break?
Yuna - Speed stuff?
Kimahri - White magic
Wakka - ???

Speed stuff just kinda meanders around the board so.. I'll try to keep track of where Yuna's going but I might get lost. :p I think stat break is the most tank-like physical path. When I get stuff like teleport and friend spheres there'll be a chance to bounce people around drastically.

I don't know how set you are on making Kimahri the white mage, but I'd much rather it be Wakka if possible - if only because I find Kimahri boring and you'll probably be using your WM a lot more. If that doesn't work, then send him down the speed path - the sooner you get Hastega, the better!

I like Kimahri but found him crippled by the original grid. Everything's still up in the air until people get moving along and even then it's changable. Wakka as white mage is certainly possible.

Today we're going to be learning lots about the ways of modern day Spira. I know, Sally, school sucks but you really ought to pay attention. First up is the "sending".

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-112.jpg

I'm so glad you asked! Though Lulu clearly is not.

The sending is a funeral rite performed by summoners to "send" their souls to the afterworld so the dead don't feel so unloved they turn into random monsters. The souls are those little sparkles Sally and Friends have been making monsters turn into. That's a lot of dead people. I'm not sure how many we've fought so far but I know it's a lot.

I think it probably has to be done relatively quickly before the souls start reforming, otherwise summoners could just do their thing every few meters and there wouldn't be any more random monsters.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-113.jpg

Yuna is Jesus!

I always thought those things under the water were some kind of flower fish. This time around I finally realized those are all coffins decorated with flowers and ribbons. That can't be good for the water supply. The sending might purify the water by turning all the dead flesh into sparkles but... I don't think I'd be comfortable drinking it regardless.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-114.jpg

Yuna is Magical Girl Jesus!

Not only does she walk on water, she dances (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=dfedTdaKqVU) on it! Everybody has a good cry while the sparkles go bye-bye.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-115.jpg

Except Lulu because she can't mess up her makeup and Sally because she's still pretty clueless. It must be pretty rough, though, having all the responsibility of making sure everyone's loved ones don't come back to eat their brains in a month or so. Sally can get that. It's like being a Blitzball star... No, Sally, it's really not.

This whole thing brings up the question: How many summoners are there in the world? Considering the dead become monsters, wouldn't it make sense to keep a summoner in every town to perform the sendings? Also it's implied this is Yuna's first sending. What happened to everybody who died in Besaid while she was in training? I suppose the summoners stopping by on their way to Mecca do it but you can't count on that happening however often the sendings are needed, I bet.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-116.jpg

Anyway, the next morning everybody from the boat is making themselves useful repairing the village. When Sally finally rolls out of bed she just goes in search of Wakka. She's like a puppy, ya?

Wakka is taking the whole Blitzball team along to the temple to pray for victory while Yuna prays for the salvation of the world. That seems a little shallow, even to Sally.

"Blitzball very important, brudda," Wakka argues. "People come watch Blitzball an' get so into da game they forget 'bout their troubles. Only the game matters then!"

"...I guess." Dammit Sally, you don't have to go along with everything he says just because you like him!

Out on the edge of town, Yuna awaits Sally with an OMG SHOCKING proposition.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-117.jpg

Shesh, Wakka, you don't have to look quite so displeased with the prospect. Yuna's retinue discusses the prospect of adding Sally to the party (except Warrior Kitty who has yet to speak) while Sally whines helplessly at all the big words and funny terms nobody's taking the time to explain to her.

"Sally is accompanying us till Luca at least," Lulu finally says, "Perhaps we should deal with more pressing matters first." Like praying for the salvation of the world. Okay, you win Lulu.

"Huh?" Sally trails after the others. "You guuuuys..."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-118.jpg

What's this? A big scary monster in the middle of the main path through the forest? There are multiple alternative routes? There's only one thing we can do. CHAAAAAARGE!!!

With the way they talk about it, you'd think Lord Ochu would be tougher. Yuna summons Valefor to pile on Fire until Valefor kicks it, then Lulu does the exact same thing but with backup from the rest of the group. This is also before starting anybody except Sally on the Sphere Grid.

The only thing of note the rest of this forest is all the little conversations the characters have in battle when someone swaps in. The best is when Wakka apologizes for calling Sally a n00b. I think further into the game all the good lines have been used up and they just say pretty generic stuff.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-122.jpg

Apparently while Sally wasn't paying attention Yuna's Guardians decided to let Sally fight alongside them as some kind of Guardian initiation test. That's okay, Sally wants the sphere levels anyway. Then, bless her little brain, Sally decides to study some more for the written portion.

As I understand it, Sinspawn are monsters that come directly from Sin itself rather than dead people. When Sin senses little bits of it out there, it comes back to collect it. So if you don't kill off the Sinspawn before Sin notices they're missing, you'll get two Sin attacks for the price of one. Seems to me if there's a way to predict where Sin's gonna go next, somebody ought to take advantage of that...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-123.jpg

Hey wait a minute! Since when does Wakka believe Sally about the Big Z? Since he figured out how Sally's existence could be used to make him feel better about the death of his beloved brother.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-124.jpg

Wakka likes the theory that everybody who gets attacked by Sin actually gets time warped. So nobody dies, they just get to go live in a beautiful magic city full of Blitzball and yummy food and puppies and everybody gets to be ten times prettier than they were in life. I mean when they were in the present day. Yeah.

Lulu is a cold-hearted bitch. I'm gonna go against form and quote the whole thing without changes. "Amazing. Simply amazing. You make up one theory after another, refusing to face the simple truth. Sin didn't take Chappu anywhere. Sin crushed him and left him on the Djose shore! Your brother won't just pop back. Oh, and one more thing. No matter how much you want it, no one can take Chappu's place. No one can replace Sir Jecht, for that matter. And there's no replacement for Lord Braska, either. It's pointless to think about it, and sad."

She crushes Wakka's soul into a little ball, then for shits and giggles tries to make Yuna and Sally cry too.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-125.jpg

There there, Wakka. You wanna hit the mean lady with a ball next battle we get into? We can do that.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-126.jpg

The Kilika temple looks like something from an amusement park. Just add some water slides and this would be the funnest trial EVER! Before that we get to meet a few people we'll be seeing more of later, though.

The first group is the Luca Blitzball team. They win as often as Wakka's team loses. That is to say always. Wakka tries to make nice but they decide to spit on what's left of his self esteem instead. Why in the world would such an awesome group have to pray for victory? They're practically gods already!

Jerks.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-127.jpg

Lulu you bitch.

Sally and I are still refusing to pray. This kind of thing has an incredibly minor effect on the affection system this game never really makes use of. A hundred potions could probably counteract all the multiple choice questions in the game.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-128.jpg

Introduction #2: Rival Summoner Dona

She dresses like a ho. Or like someone who's already using dress spheres (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_X-2#Dresspheres_and_the_Garment_Grid) a game ahead of schedule. She's more hardcore than Yuna because she only has one guardian. I bet they're doing a No Sphere Grid challenge too.

Yuna argues her case for having a hundred and seven guardians in a really unassertive kind of way. "I feel that my way of playing this game is more fun but I'm sure your way is fun too and I wouldn't want to reduce either of our fun levels by arguing over it." Something like that. But with more ellipses. Plus all Yuna's guardians are her friends and all her friends are her guardians. Super fun!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-129.jpg

I wonder.

Next time: I jump past the trial and hope no one notices!!

The way I saw it, what with Dona and Isaaru (and the whole bunch of Summoners that the Al Bhed kidnapped) the Temples probably train several people in the Summoner path, but they only earn the title, so to speak, after they've successfully bonded with the Fayth. So, there's probably a bunch of other Summoners-to-be in major communities, we just never saw their stories. Also, the regular clergy probably has the capacity to Send people, just in a less flashy manner.

Also, don't Fiends come from people who die violent deaths? I don't think a regular death by disease or old age would harbor enough rage to return as a Fiend or remain as an Unsent.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-117.jpg

Shesh, Wakka, you don't have to look quite so displeased with the prospect.

I love the screencap; Wakka looks like he's doing a standard Takahashi double-take in that, with the raised arm and all.

Some famous Blitzball player trained by running up and down the temple steps every day.

Yes, and he even got a Sphere made out of his life. He was famous enough that the city commissioned a statue of him, arms raised high, and placed it at the top of those stairs. But then the Temple complained that it was too ugly, that it was not art, and that everyone associated the Temple with the athlete, and moved the statue off to the side and at the base of the mountain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philadelphia_Museum_of_Art#Relationship_to_Philade lphia).

She crushes Wakka's soul into a little ball, then for shits and giggles tries to make Yuna and Sally cry too.

Sheesh. You'd think she has some unresolved issues as a Guardian or something.

It took me a couple of times through the game to realize they were coffins, too. When I did, though, I had the same thought as you did. Plus, if dumping your dead in the water is a Spira-wide tradition, it would certainly go a long way towards explaining the mental capacities of many of the characters in the game.

I will, because I'm waiting for another sprite-based summary.

A friend of mine was convinced that Tidus was dead throughout the game. When you start the game up in Zanarkand, he's at the top of the blitzball stadium during the cutscene, and he falls to the entrance by the end - Tidus is dead by that point. He then suggested that, during that cutscene where Yuna sends, Tidus slowly rises up in the air - the last shot is of Tidus floating several feet off the ground, which is possibly what you'd expect to happen if someone that was a ghost was being 'sent'.

Of course, with the release of X-2 we know this is horseshit, and Square is not that clever.

All that is possible but I still feel like complaining. :p I suppose Yuna may have Sent people from Besaid before but it was okay to cry a bit because she knew them in life but now she's crying for people she never even met so she's supposed to toughen up a bit more than that. The game does an impressive job with showing Yuna's not the only summoner out there so I really wish it had some apprentice summoners you could chat up in the temples here and there. Make it clear that's how it works if it does. There may also be apprentices who failed to bond or gave up the quest part way.

Sheesh. You'd think she has some unresolved issues as a Guardian or something.

Have fun with the annoying puzzles, guys!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-131.jpg

Dona and her manmeat return (why??) and, upon discovering Sally's not allowed to participate in the trials, decide to play a little prank and chuck Sally down the elevator. Tee hee. Fuckers.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-132.jpg

Sally go down the hole.

Yes, Dona is wearing a split skirt and a thong for her pilgrimage around the world.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-133.png

Imagine juggling in a dark room for 10d6 minutes and randomly one of the balls catches on fire. That pretty much sums up this trial. Except there's also a pillar you have to shove around, with no indication where to put it, and the controls hate you, so you'll push it when you're trying to walk past it and run past it when you're trying to push it. The pillar goes on the sparkle spot which the previous trial established as meaning "restart puzzle".

On the plus side, it's unlikely you'll miss the treasure because you'll already be in the habit of shoving your balls in every hole you come across. Also there was nothing sexual at all about that sentence.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-134.jpg

I'm so glad you asked!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-135.jpg

Seeing as that small child doesn't appear to be dead (or is she?!), I think it's one of those things where the penalties are strict but whenever it actually comes up they're "lenient" depending on how much you pissed them off lately.

Nobody's going to kill Braska's daughter and Sally got punished plenty by having to go through that damn trial so I think we're good.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-136.jpg

Wouldn't be awesome if they made a game without a Sally-type character at all, just characters who already know everything, and nobody explains anything to the player? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Inside those super special chambers are statues of dead people that have the souls of dead people inside them. They're called "fayth" and they're chumps who nearly died fighting Sin, then used a sacrifice power like bomb-type monsters to kill with pure spite. Unlike bombs, their sacrifice isn't of the instant gratification kind. Instead they turn into summons used by the summoners who use them to fight Sin.

That's not entirely accurate but it's gonna be a while before it matters.

In way less time than her first prayer session, Yuna emerges with her new summon, Ifrit. The summons are renamable but the only reason to do that would be to make it more confusing for me when picking what to summon in battle. Therefore I won't give you the opportunity.

We're going on a boat trip~! Will this one go any better than the last? Yes

Check out the dude with the eye patch. He's probably a rival Blitzball player. He looks awesome, I wonder if we should recruit him later.

And that second shot is our "world map". It sucks even when it doesn't have a boat making it hard to see. Anywhere I want to go, I have to trek to through areas or teleport using the airship when we finally get it.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-142.jpg

These boat trips are pretty cool because everybody who wants to show up in the rest of the game has to hitch a ride because this is the only boat traveling this route until who knows when. We met the Luca Blitzball team back at the temple so they're on the boat in addition to the Besaid and Kilika teams who actually hail from these parts. Dona and her guardian are here along with Yuna's squadron, plus the Anti-Sin Coalition dudes and O'aka will beg for more money.

Dona spends the entire trip rubbing up against her manmeat. ^_^;

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-143.jpg

Yeah, I finally had to break down and edit some pictures for gender consistency. -_- Well, I didn't have to but Yuna looks so evil in that shot I just had to use it.

Seeing Yuna surrounded by yet more adoring fans, Sally gets jealous and decides to cut in. It's the Luca Goers and they remember Sally as the idiot from the Kilika temple who thought the Aurochs stand a chance of winning the tournament. I imagine summoners aren't supposed to show a bias for their home team since they fight for "Team Spira" but, having friends on one of the teams, Yuna has an extra reason for her bias. Plus

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-144.jpg

There's that. Yes, boys, the most famous summoner alive is a little bit crazy. But, well... it's not like any of them have been there to verify it's totally destroyed. And Yuna is kinda hot (and not taken like Dona)... so what's the harm in humoring her? The Goers head below deck to get the giggles out of their system before the big tournament.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-145.jpg

Yuna's reasons for believing in Sally are a bit disappointing but hardly surprising. "Jecht said so." Sigh. One day Sally will prove herself. To Yuna... and to herself.

Word has it Wakka and Lulu went up to the top deck alone earlier. Officially there is nothing more than friendship between Sally and Wakka now but there's nothing wrong with a little eavesdropping, right?

Aw crap, now they're talking about growing up without parents so you know they're going to feel obligated to "make it work" even though Lulu totally doesn't deserve it. And what are they going to tell Yuna? Nothing?! You know Lulu's not going to quit the pilgrimage even though she's in no condition to be traversing around the world fighting fiends now.

Oh Sally, I'm so sorry. ;_;

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-148.jpg

Sally decides to work out her frustrations on a Blitzball she finds on deck but that just brings up a whole different set of issues. Daddy issues. When Sally was a kid she tried to do one of her dad's signature moves. She completely failed and, worse, dad saw the attempt and mocked her mercilessly for it. "Of course you can't do it, sport, nobody else can!" HATE.

It's time for the Overcoming Paternal Abuse mini-game! It's right up there with the Erotic Lesbian Massage mini-game from FFX-2 for best in the series. I posted this video (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=j2hghdnrJCk) of Sally failing miserably at it because I forgot to record the successful attempt. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-152.jpg

"I dunno. I thought he died ten years ago so I never really thought about it. Probably... sock him and then challenge him to a Blitzball match." Sally smirks confidently but inside she wonders about that. She's pretty good now but good enough to best Jecht? Maybe... "Your dad's famous too, isn't he, Yuna? You know how tough it is, right?"

"It is... hard to be... as great as... him, as a summoner. But... it is a great honor... to have such a great father. I think." Dammit Yuna, you're, like, impossible to relate to.

"Well you're lucky 'cause my dad sucked," Sally replies.

"You mustn't say such things about your father!"

"I got every right!"

Suddenly Yuna realizes she's being contrary which, according to the Little House books, is a sin or something. A sin worse than disobeying the whole "honor thy father" thing, apparently. "...I... guess you do."

Wakka pulls Sally back to the Aurochs' last minute Blitzball practice to demonstrate the Sally Shot until she turns blue.

Progress Report!
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/sally-SGprogress1.jpg

As you can see, Sally is well on her way to picking up Steal and Use Item. There are some battles in Luca that will be stupidly easy if Sally has Steal by then but I don't think that's going to happen.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/lulu-SGprogress1.jpg

Lulu has made her way into the more physical area and is almost to the crossroads between stat break and status attack. After studying the grid a lot I think stat break actually has the most direct path to picking up Hastega, which was requested, so I'm inclined to attempt that route.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/wakka-SGprogress1.jpg

For Wakka I'm trying something a little different. Cutting through the middle of the grid has a lot of dead space and level 1 elemental spells are a dead end he'd have to backtrack out of. Instead he took his own path as far as the level 1 lock and will sit there until I get a key sphere (should be soon). Once unlocked, he'll head for the level 2 elemental spells and continue from there.

If it ever looks like Wakka is falling behind in usefulness, there are plenty of crossover points into white magic available.

Not worth pictures:
- Kimahri is starting down white magic. He's halfway through the thrilling "Null" spells.
- Yuna is still sitting there at her starting point. I'm still not sure what to do with her!
- Auron will be joining soon so if anybody has thoughts for him, be sure to speak up.

Yes, Dona is wearing a split skirt and a thong for her pilgrimage around the world.

Hey, she's just following in her role model, Shiva's, example.

She'll regret it come Bikanel, however.

Imagine juggling in a dark room for 10d6 minutes and randomly one of the balls catches on fire.

The sentence and the visual representation made me laff.

I missed the treasure, incidentally. Had to wait about 40 hours before I could come back to claim it, since the Cloister Treasures are a requirement for unlocking Baaj Temple.

In way less time than her first prayer session, Yuna emerges with her new summon, Ifrit. The summons are renamable but the only reason to do that would be to make it more confusing for me when picking what to summon in battle. Therefore I won't give you the opportunity.

And I wanted to name Ifrit "Wolfie" :(

Yeah, I finally had to break down and edit some pictures for gender consistency. -_- Well, I didn't have to but Yuna looks so evil in that shot I just had to use it.

You can tell she just wants to pick up a gun and fill them all with lead.

Not that she knows what a gun is. Or lead.

HOLY CRAP THAT TWO-TIMING BASTARD!!

W-when did they-?! I mean, it was only a couple days ago he tried to get in Sally's pants! Musta been before Sally got here b-but-!

It's the belts. It's easier to undo several dozen of them than to fiddle with Sally's lederhosen.

Jecht is mean :(

It's time for the Overcoming Paternal Abuse mini-game! It's right up there with the Erotic Lesbian Massage mini-game from FFX-2 for best in the series. I posted this video (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=j2hghdnrJCk) of Sally failing miserably at it because I forgot to record the successful attempt. You only get one chance at this and that's why Yevon created save spheres. Succeeding means Sally will know the Jecht Shot in Blitzball and that's our only chance to win at Luca.

Actually, you can just take the ship back to Besaid later on and you'll get another shot at the Shot.

Wahoo! Yip! Wai~wai! There's civilization on this world after all!

Luca has a nice big Blitzball stadium, adoring crowds, and even magic television! When the ship from Kilika arrives the TV crew is there to film all the arriving Blitzball teams. First up is the Kilika Beasts who get a big sympathy cheer for being the most recent Sin survivors. Then the Besaid Aurochs are a statistical impossibility, having lost every single game in over twenty years.

Finally the homeboys, the Luca Goers, step off the ship and the crowd goes wild. They play it up, acting like just 'cause they won as many matches as the Aurochs lost they're gonna win. Those jerks. Well Sally's got something to say to that!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-154.jpg

"For far too long, you've maintained a monopoly on victory, crushing the hopes and dreams of Blitzers all over Spira. You may have the best team, and you may have won last tournament, and you might even win the next one, but this time the cup belongs to us, the Besaid Aurochs!!"

Wakka finally manages to pull Sally down from the crate she climbed up on for her speech. "Simmer down, ya? You might be one heck of a Blitzer but your pet talks could use some work."

"Yevon's left testicle! We were on the sphere," random Auroch #3 remarks.

"We were?" asks random Auroch #5. "Sweet."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-155.jpg

Oh yays, a celebrity from Yuna's circle of interest. That would be political/religious leaders and fellow summoners I guess. Glad to escape the mostly confused and mocking attention Sally has brought on them, the Aurochs head to the locker room while the playable characters go where Yuna's whims send them.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-156.jpg

Hey we didn't get a band. The Goers didn't even get a band! Though these guys are pretty freaky looking so I'm not sure that's a bad thing... Sally complains about not being able to see through the crowd and Wakka shushes her rather than hoisting her up on his shoulders. How disappointing.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-157.jpg

Oh look, a freshly minted politician. His name is Seymour Guado and he's kinda... veiny. Also his cloak appears to be attached to his nipples. His dad died recently and he inherited the position so you know he's the best kind of politician. He talks about improving human-Guado relations in his little speech. Guado are not to be confused with guano, though they can both be found on cave floors.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-158.jpg

Yuna seems quite taken with him. Sally's a bit surprised; he doesn't seem like Yuna's... type. But there are other things to worry about: Sally's gotta make good on her promise of sweet chocolately victory!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-159.jpg

Al Bhed... That's what Rikku is! Anyway those kids from Chapter 2 finally get their way and it's time for a Blitzball tutorial. It mostly comes down to swearing at the constantly changing camera angle and the arbitrary stat calculations. Okay, we can do this.. we can...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-160.jpg

Oh sweet distraction, a way out of this! Thank you, Yuna, thank you!

"B-but the game's gonna start!" Wakka sputters as his last hope of not retiring with a perfectly horrid record runs out the locker room door.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-161.jpg

What a coincidence! I wonder whose dad Auron's gonna turn out to be.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-162.jpg

Those Al Bhed dudes aren't being suspicious. Nope, not at all.

"So, like, you guys all look alike to me so... was that you? I guess not. Anyway I'm sure all Al Bhed know each other so if you know this girl named Rikku, can you tell her Sally said thanks for the food? Great, thanks!" Sally runs off after Yuna.

"Tu oui ghuf fryd cra fyc cyoehk?" one of the Al Bhed asks the other.

"Hu lmia. Ev cra dfela yc muit E drehg E sekrd ryja ihtancduut," the other shrugs.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-164.jpg

So Sally tries to teach Yuna how to whistle. "Do that if we get separated and I'll come!" Sally declares.

"B...but it didn't work..."

"Let's go!"

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-165.jpg

Yuna is quite well-read in travel guides of Spira. She explains that Wakka's Blitzball-centric view of the world is actually quite common. The stadium in Luca is the only one in the world and the Anti-Sin Coalition protects the stadium in particular. Spira has invented television but not the sitcom so Blitzball is the only form of entertainment available.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-166.jpg

I really do.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-167.jpg

Hey guys! Good to see you're so concerned about protecting the stadium from Sin, which, you might remember, attacked a nearby island yesterday and is probably still in the area.

Okay okay, Yuna, we'll go to the pub.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-168.jpg

Unless he's invisible. Never underestimate the milkman.

Yuna investigates further.

Cat fight!!

It turns out Warrior Kitty has a backstory after all. Warrior Kitty know Ronso Yenke and Ronso Biran from ten year ago. Warrior Kitty runt. Warrior Kitty possibly sexually abused at "time of horn-molt". Warrior Kitty get revenge!

While sally incites a riot, the tournament is beginning.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-170.jpg

Wakka must have lotsa valor, ya?

The game between the Besaid Aurochs and Al Bhed Psyches begins without Sally. Oops. I'm... really torn up over that. So sorry, but Yuna needed Sally.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-171.jpg

CRAP!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-172.jpg

Okay so the two guys in the hall waited for Yuna to leave with only half her guardians (still more than Dona has regularly). They followed her, kidnapped her in a crowded pub, took her off to their boat, delivered their ransom demand to Wakka and Lulu, and still managed to be there for the start of the game. And Lulu made it all the way across town in that ridiculous skirt by the time Sally noticed Yuna was even gone.

The logistics of this setup has always bothered me. If the Al Bhed just showed a slightly larger presence in Luca today or showed evidence of possessing long-distance communication devices I'd be okay with it.

The discussion of why the Al Bhed Psyches would feel the need to resort to dirty tactics to win against the worst team in the world makes up for a lot though.

Aren't they adorable? They run around on all fours, then get up on their hind legs and shoot at us! ^_^ I think I'll call them Bhedspawn because they're a lot like Sinspawn but with Al Bhed instead of Sin.

There are a ton of them.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-174.jpg

The Aurochs are just trying to buy us time and they're able to keep the scored tied. The Psyches must really suck.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-175.jpg

That's what she said! Oh wait she did...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-176.jpg

Behold, the big empty Al Bhed boat that is trying to depart before the rescue squad arrives! Jerks, the game's only like ten minutes long; you can just let her go in like three minutes...

The group fights a wussy robot boss with an awesome robot boss name: Oblitzerator. It gets killed by a crane it stands next to. The... claw kind. Not the bird.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-177.jpg

The moment the Oblitzerator finishes exploding, Yuna walks out on deck. "I have... punished the... nonbelievers," she says with a smile. "Was that right?"

"Yes, you did very well." Lulu gives her a hug.

They eventually notice Sally looking around the deck as if looking for something in particular. "I do not believe there is treasure to be acquired on this vessel," Lulu informs her.

"No, I wasn't -" Sally gives up her survey. "When I first got here, I got picked up by this Al Bhed ship and I thought maybe this was the same ship but it doesn't have a save sphere on deck so it can't be."

"You knew... Al Bhed? What... happened to them?" Yuna asks.

"I don't know. When Sin attacked I got knocked overboard and woke up in Besaid. I never saw what happened to them."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-178.jpg

"Cid is... the name of my... mother's brother. He's an... Al Bhed. I've... never met him."

"You're Al Bhed?!" Sally is quite shocked by this. I mean, Yuna doesn't even wear goggles!

"Half, on my... mother's side," Yuna confirms, bowing her head. "It is my... inherited shame."

"Don't tell Wakka," Lulu cuts in. "He is less tolerant of their kind than some."

"Um, right." Sally suddenly realizes, "Wakka doesn't know!"

"That's what I just-"

"No, the game! He doesn't know Yuna's okay!"

"Oh, that."

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-179.jpg
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-180.jpg

The game is still going despite a long chase all around the stadium, fighting the Oblitzerator, and having a discussion about Yuna's family secret. Longest sudden death overtime ever? Seeing the signal, Wakka leads the charge to the Aurochs' first victory in many many years. The Psyches need to fire, like... everybody.

With his beloved one game victory, Wakka succumbs to his injuries and faints. Underwater. No, the lack of drowning never makes sense, especially since only some party members are able to fight underwater.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-181.jpg

That's what she said! That one didn't work as well.

Sally tries to tell Lulu she's being too cruel, always comparing Wakka to his brother like that.

Lulu's on to me!!

In bed.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-183.jpg

Back in the locker room, Yuna apologizes for getting kidnapped and Wakka tells her if she ever lets it happen again, they might just have to leave her tied to the train tracks for a few hours so she learns her lesson.

There are only six Blitzball teams in the world, which doesn't work out nicely for a tournament. The Aurochs were seeded so they only had to beat one team to make it into the finals. Their opponents, the Luca Goers (of course), had to beat two teams to make it into the finals. Realistically that should give the Aurochs and advantage in energy levels but that's just not the video game way.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-184.jpg

And, uh, Wakka subs himself out for Sally. I'd like to point out that Wakka's Aurochs were the only all-male team in the world until this moment. That kinda bothers me and if I actually play Blitzball after this game, I may try to stuff my team with girls just to spite Wakka. Toss in an Al Bhed too, just to rub it in.

After the team heads out to play, we get treated to another scene between Wakka and his babymama.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-185.jpg

Lulu doesn't want to be a single mom. Between her puppet-wielding belt-fetishist goth ass and Wakka - the racist sexually confused Hawaiian - there's an extremely slim chance of the kid growing up normal. Things don't need to get any more dysfunctional.

Tender Moment Alert!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-186.jpg

Wakka actually just fainted again, so they're not really cuddling. Still it's so "awwww"! Starting Lulu on a Tank path is already working its magic as she can easily support the weight of Mr Beefcake there.

Smiley here is kind of a dick but not it's actually his buddy to the left who's the most trouble. The girl is nothing special other than the fact she is the only girl in the match. Also: the logistics of giggling underwater fascinate me.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-190.jpg

Right off the bat, Graav grabs the ball and with the way Blitzball works we can't do jack until we've got possession. Graav is the overleveled jerk so it's a miracle Keepa actually blocked that goal. In the three times I replayed this match, that's his only save. He throws the ball in to Letty and I take the opportunity to switch to Manual A.

Manual A lets you control the movement of whomever (on your team) has the ball based on the minimap in the bottom right corner. Left is our goal, right is theirs. The red blips are them, greenish ones are us. Manual B bases the controls on the main image and is variable with the camera angle so it sucks. Auto sucks because at that point you're not even playing.

Letty passes to Sally and Sally passes to whoever is open. In this case it's usually Jassu and I move Sally and Jassu closer together so their passes take less time and are less likely to be intercepted. Every time someone participates in a play, like passing or catching, they earn experience points. The goal is to get Sally to level three by halftime so she can equip the Jecht Shot and win this baby.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-191.jpg

That's the stuff!

One minute into the second half and it's over.

I don't know if HP recovery is even fast enough that Sally could conceivably do two Jecht Shots in one game at her level but it doesn't matter this game. Halfway through, Sally is subbed out for Wakka so he can have his Blitzball "last stand." I'm sure Wakka's not bad but he doesn't have the frickin' Jecht Shot!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-193.jpg

We tried so hard, and got so far, but in the end it doesn't even matter.*

* Actually we woulda gotten a Strength Sphere, which adds a STR+4 to an empty node on the Sphere Grid. Lulu really could have used the boost.

Either way a ton of fishkin attack. Sally and Wakka are the only ones who can fight underwater right now so they fight their way through to get out of the fishbowl.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-197.jpg

And boy is his summon charming. You can't see it in that shot but it is bound by chains and presumably isn't as strong as it would be free. It roars - or screams in agony perhaps - and every monster in the stadium turns to sparkles.

It's frustrating how the game acts like Seymour might be good or at least ambiguous yet he summons this nightmare beast. Good job reinforcing he's really frickin' powerful though! Maesters are apparently Summoners who went into politics.

"No," comes Auron's gravelly response. "That was just an excuse to stop by and sex your mom every morning."

heh, I would have also taken "no, but you fight like a cow."

Previously on Spheres of Our Lives: Sally the Overhyped Blitzball Star failed to score even once in her debut game and Wakka retired from the world of sports in shame. Suddenly a man from the past unexpectedly appeared!

What will become of Sally? Will she ever see Wakka again? And what of the man in the red coat??

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-204.jpg

Well that was resolved awful quickly.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-205.jpg

Auron, you just wrapped up the entire plot hook of this update! Now we've got to kill time until the writers can come up with something. Yuna, do something!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-206.jpg

...

What have I done?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-207.jpg

"Not... really."

"Well... this is the start... of your guardian training. Smile!" Yuna smiles. What does that smile mean? Is she going to make Warrior Kitty kick Sally's ass if she doesn't cooperate? Is she crying on the inside? This is so confusing!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-208.jpg

Damnit Sally, she's going to have you killed!

Oh hey, she seems to approve of that wide-mouthed grimace.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-212.jpg

Like chat up the other Blitzball players hanging out in Luca and try to recruit some of them to the Aurochs! I think that Ronso is hitting on Wakka. Balgerda isn't allowed to join our team ever for that crack. Bitch.

Actually all these guys have contracts with their teams so none of them are recruitable but there are plenty of free agents hanging out in town. Sally recruits Shaami the Newsgirl, Wedge the Ineffectual Guardsman, and Zalitz the... Dude. His name starts with a Z. That's kinda cool, right?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-213.jpg

Once it's not like sending the Special Olympics players up against the Real Olympics teams, Blitzball gets kind of fun. Plus you can win fabulous prizes! But I have no idea how. I played three games and didn't win anything. Then I ran out of money to renew player contracts. Back to the quest... -_-

Thanks boring backstory-spitting NPC!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-215.jpg

Thanks random NPCs! Sally should have started calling herself a guardian ages ago with the way people throw random items and equipment at her now. Everybody on this whole road without a name gives out free stuff. Which means...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-216.jpg

Hi boring backstory-spitting NPC who has a name. -_-

Meet Maechen. He's a scholar, which means he's kinda boring but you've gotta pay attention to him on the off chance he'll say something important. In FFX-2 if you skip anything he says you'll miss out on the 100% ending. This time he says Sin is making people too depressed so Yuna really needs to do something about that.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-217.jpg

These girls are like the Anti-Sin Coalition we've been traveling with since Besaid except they're lesbians. I mean chicks on chicks. I mean.. nevermind.

They announce there's chocobo-eating monster in the area, thus they are riding their chocobos around.

"We should go kill that fiend!" Sally declares.

"Why?" Auron prompts.

"'Cause we're the heroes and that's what heroes do!" Yeah! You tell him, Sally!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-218.jpg

Shut up your lies old man! I'm not listening to you anymore!!! ;_;

Further down the road...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-219.jpg

"I..." Yuna blushes, "I think I might... like that."

"Then we shall have a dual. Your aeon against mine," Belgemine continues.

"O-oh. That's... what you mean." Yuna giggles nervously. Not sure what Yuna thought she meant but whatever.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-220.jpg

BELGEMINE summons IFRIT! YUNA summons VALEFOR!

They're pretty evenly matched provided Yuna has been advanced along the Sphere Grid. So... yeah, I redid this battle after actually using Yuna's Sphere Levels. She's a red mage now, since that gets her Aeons a high magic defense the most efficiently.

The prize for winning is an "Echo Ring" that gives Yuna +10% HP and Echo Ward. It's pretty nice for this point in the game.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-221.jpg

Well thanks lady, that's really - wait, huh? Why not?

Belgey leaves without explaining. Darn it, why can't she be more like Auron and spit out major spoilers right off the bat?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-222.jpg

At our next stop, Yuna lies to small children! This little girl is maybe ten but in FFX-2 she's suddenly a cute teenager. My how they grow.

The little girl's only use here is prompting Sally to ask what the Calm is. The Calm is the time between periods of Sin. I suppose you could avoid figuring that out before now if you didn't talk to random townsfolk at all. Sin gets defeated and takes a bit of time to... reform, I guess.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-223.jpg

A random Blitzball! Maybe Sally can confront her father's memory again!! Or... not. You shouldn't have left it sitting around like that, kid. I've never been able to resist kicking that thing to find out what the little kid might give you.

A little farther down the road one of the random NPCs gives us a Level 1 Key Sphere so Wakka can continue on his journey into black magic. Yay!

Hey guys! So where were you when monsters attacked the game, huh? The Choco-Girls ride up and scold them for being slackers after only a few lines of conversation. Good to see someone's keeping them in line now.

Yuna makes an effort to convert them back to the faith but they're not interested in that crap. Sally gives a slight nod to them as they continue along. Heathens gotta stick together... kinda.

Further yet, one of the heathen forces is engaging in an argument with a True Believer. He uses the approach of the summoner and her guardians to escape.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-225.jpg

Meet Shelinda. We hates her.

She's against the project all the heathens are working on not just because it's a non-summoner based attempt to defeat Sin but because they dare to use machines in the attempt! Won't someone think of the Teachings!?!

I'm kind of surprised O'aka hasn't popped up along this road. Pretty much everyone else has, after all.

Hey, be nice to Maechen, he's got a cool voice.

Seriously. Maechen has my favorite voice in FFX and X-2 - I wish I could attend a class he was teaching so I could hear him explain history in that voice.

Speaking of FFX's voices, I'm replaying the game and remembering two things: one of the reasons why Auron's voice is so cool is because his mouth is almost always covered up so the actor didn't have to try to lip synch. Conversely, Yuna's voice actor doesn't deserve all of the complaints I've heard - her biggest flaw is that she DOES try to lip synch EVERYTHING, which creates all those weird pauses in her lines. Near-endgame spoiler: When Tidus finds the sphere she recorded early on that has all of her goodbyes, her voice acting is actually pretty good and lacking the stupid pauses.

Oh, and I still think that Seymour kinda sounds like Winnie the Pooh. I always expect him to say "Oh, bother."

Elfir

I know Maechen's got fans but I was never one of them. :p

Yuna's voice acting in 2 is really great 'cause they resynced it for the voice actress instead. It kind of works overall because she's so much more confident in that game.

Forget that, get Zev! Zev Ronso is an amazing center, especially if you get him Golden Arm and the Wither/Sleep Pass techs. Biggs and Wedge can go hang as long as you've got him passing and breaking through enemy defenses.

Come to think of it, him and Wakka are the only two players I actually recruited in my first playthrough (when I started playing Blitzball, post-Zanarkand.) I kept Keepa and the two defenses, but booted the two other guys. On my second one, I recruited Biggs and Wedge to keep them off Luca's roster, put Zev back in the formation, and hired a priestess-looking woman who looked very awkward swimming in her full-length robes. :D (But she made a great shooter. I'll look her up later.)

I would have gotten the matched pair of Biggs and Wedge but somehow I didn't find Biggs. *shrug* The reporter girl wears a dress underwater too.

My initial goal was just to get the Aurochs off my team ASAP. Unfortunately the various Blitzball guides on Gamefaqs are really hard to follow but I'm gonna dig through them for a decent goalie I can recruit early. I remember one saying Wedge develops into a good goalie but doesn't start that way... Practically anybody would be better than Keepa though.

I'll take any recruit suggestions people might have.

Well, the best goalie you can get this early in the game is definitely Jumal, but he's back in Luca. If you're willing to go back though, he's sitting on a park bench next to the fountain in the square just as you're heading out of town toward the Mi'ihen Highroad.

Also, be sure to pick up Ropp if you're still at Rin's travel agency (he's the dude behind the counter on the right) as he's one of the best blitzball defenders in the entire game.

These lovely ladies take in a spectacular sunset outside the ol' chocobo farm Bed & Breakfast. A gentle breeze moves across the water, replacing the stink of chocobos with the smell of fresh lake water. Brushing her hair from her face, Yuna meets Sally's gaze. After a long pause, Sally breaks the silence.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-228.jpg

"I... used to know this joke... but I've forgotten the punchline."

"Yuna, I... was seriously asking," Sally says, starting to worry about their summoner's ability to focus. "Sin? Toxin? Time travel? I don't know the jokes. I don't even know the company line!"

"O-oh, right. I forgot." Yuna giggles a little, then answers properly, sounding like a textbook. "Sin is our punishment for our vanity. It will keep coming back until we repent. How long that will take, no one knows. Until then, summoners will keep trying to defeat Sin so the people may relax, even for a short time."

"What'd we do that was so bad, anyway? Like, thousand-years-of-suffering bad?" Sally asks. "Something to do with using machina maybe?"

This game has the best morals. They turn in. Morning brings with it new friends and new giant monsters.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-231.jpg

Friend!!

Rin is pretty cool. He's an Al Bhed who owns a chain of travel agencies (inns) all over Spira. Most Al Bhed are pretty reclusive and don't bother to learn basic Common but he not only knows Common but carries around a few Al Bhed Primers for any cute blonds who want to join his "study group".

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-232.jpg

Giant monster!!

Yuna is a beast at magic now. Wakka has the same black magic she does right now but she does almost four times as much damage with it. Sally has steal now but I keep forgetting to use it. Lulu-the-Tank isn't turning out very well but we're gonna stick with it a while longer.

"Smack it like crazy" + "with fire" is the strategy for this boss fight. You'll knock it down and push it back and eventually it'll either die or fall off the cliff and die. If you're weak enough to let it do the same, it'll push you off the cliff and you just won't get the experience and treasure. The treasure is two more Level 1 Key Spheres so don't let that happen!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-233.jpg

Our other reward is a free chocobo ride. (And a closeup of Rin's hot bod!) Chocobos are usually bad 'cause we want the experience from fighting monsters but this is an exception. There are yellow feathers here and there along the path and by running into them with a chocobo, it will run and jump -

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-234.jpg

- to delicious treasure! And way down a side path is the Saturn Crest, which is important for unlocking Sailor Saturn later on.

Back at the exit to the next area, the Anti-Sin Coalition has set up a blockade for their "super secret project" everyone and their mother is talking about. The rumors, summed up: Sin, machina, Al Bhed, Anti-Sin Coalition. All of ASC is excommunicated, so this is pretty much everything sinful and evil in the world.

Tee hee! They're pissing off Dona so I think we can forgive all that. Dona eventually sulks off to have angry sex with her manmeat until the blockade goes away.

And what shall we do to kill time until it goes away? Certainly not talk to the guard to trigger the next plot point! Heck no, I just gained access to a Blitzball tournament! I've kinda gotten the hang of this game now and only the Al Bhed Psyches give me a hard time because of their cheaterly good goalie. The first prize of the tournament is a Blitzball technique nobody on my team can use so it gets wasted but I engineered it so Sally and Shaami tied for most goals scored and netted two Return Spheres.

Return Spheres let someone go back to any point they've already visited on the Sphere Grid. On the Expert Grid it's handy when you discover you've made a wrong turn. We've also amassed three Level 1 Sphere Keys by now and I have no clue what we'll be using them on.

Oh, and this:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-236.jpg

Glee! Confession: My first time playing I never really figured out why Wakka didn't get any new overdrives. Other than Sally and Auron, it doesn't really feel like you're getting new ones so it didn't seem that weird.

Back to the plot.

It's our hometown buddies again! They're delivering a wagon full of... red thing. Perhaps this wagon is an early version of the Pokeball.

The boys say their goodbyes with the promise this will be a very short and unfulfilling game. We follow along to interrogate the guards.

Operation Mi'ihen: ASC collects all the sinspawn they can and brings them together to one place. Since Sin always comes back for its spawn, this should force Sin to come where they want, right into a trap!

Nobody's very specific about the trap itself but since this is the big ol' heathens project I doubt they have two dozen summoners lined up to Ifrit Sin's ass. I could see that working but not much else.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-239.jpg

...you know, that's an excellent point. I'm sure The Lady of the Thong convinced everyone that the only way to beat Sin was to send one Summoner to perform the Final Summoning, but surely someone, somewhere, sometime in 1000 years of tradition, thought, "Wouldn't we do better rallying all the Summoners in the world and frying that manatee's ass?"

Right on the other side of the blockade, the whole road is a lot darker. Must be the looming shadow of impending doom. Seymour makes a speach to the troops indicating they're all okay guys and probably won't go to hell for going against the teachings of Yevon. Wakka, naturally, has a problem with that.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-243.jpg

But nobody else does. Reactions range from "that's interesting" to "he's a Maester so it must be okay." With the usual "..." from Nekoman. Talk dammit!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-244.jpg

"Your mom."

That was totally not me this time. Blame Auron.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-245.jpg

Wakka is taking speech classes from Yuna. Seymour manages to figure out what Wakka is trying to ask and he's okay with the operation because it's for the greater good. You'd think they would go with the usual bureaucratic response to these things: Ignore it and hope it works out to your advantage. He suggests Wakka try that method though.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-246.jpg

Um, yeah.

Seymour goes off to... help? Watch? Eat popcorn?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-247.jpg

"That's nice but we're headin' to da temple, ya?" Wakka says.

"I'm sorry, we're still making preparations there," Clasko replies. Damn I hate his hair. "Lord Seymour requests you meet him at the command center."

"Hang on, wasn't Seymour just making an excuse to get us through the blockade?" Sally mutters.

"It would seem not." Lulu is short and to the point as always.

Frick. We've traded one blockade for another.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-248.jpg

Between the Seymour crap and now this railroad plot, Wakka's pretty surly. I love it when battle dialog changes to reflect what's going on in the plot.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-249.jpg

Those platforms are "nature's elevators", with bursts of water changing their height when you step on them. Despite that being kind of cool, I don't like this little side path. It's infested with bombs, basilisks, and enough elementals to eat through Yuna's magic points very quickly. Wakka's magic skill is still so low he has trouble one-hitting things even while taking advantage of their elemental weaknesses.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-250.jpg

Oops, looks like we walked into the middle of a lovers' quarrel.

"I'm not a cadet anymore, sir!" Gatta shouts, staring pleadingly into his senior officer's eyes. "I want to go with you! I want to prove myself!"

"I-" Luzzu looks away. Oh how he wishes they could always be together. "I know, but an order's an order."

"Luzzu..." Though tears glitter in his eyes, Gatta dares not shed them.

"To your post, Crusader."

Stung by such an impersonal command, Gatta finally relents. "Yes... sir." He flees, not trusting himself to hide his sorrow any longer.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-251.jpg

They were in their own little world while arguing but there's no use hiding it now. Sally and Wakka add their own two gil, on either side of the issue as it turns out. No one's really surprised Sally would related to the uke* and Wakka would relate to the seme*.

Yuna doesn't want to see anyone else get hurt by Sin but Auron points out she doesn't have the monopoly on martyrdom. I wonder how many people working on this operation honestly expect to survive it? And is that more or less than how many think it'll work?

You know who we haven't seen in a while?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-257.jpg

Yaaay! O'aka!

Depending on how much money you give him when he's begging earlier in the game, he'll give you a special discount now. That'd be cool except I never use items. I got Sally a counterattack sword and that's pretty much it. So not worth it.

At the entrance to the command center, Gatta is still raging about the unfairness of the world.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-258.jpg

Important Decision Time!: Should we encourage Gatta to obey orders and guard the command center or should he secretly go out on the front lines to face death like a man? I forget the specifics but I know this is one of the few choices in the game that matter.

And make it quick, I wanna play some tonight! ^_^

After a brief deliberation, the party advises Gatta to stay home and mind the house like a good boy. Gatta grumbles a bit - something about "you can't make me" and "you're not my real dad" - but we've done our part and it's time to move on. I wonder who's in charge of this operation!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-260.jpg

o_o

Oh no he didn't!

Fat man hugged Auron!! He must be somehow important to the plot because Auron doesn't break his arms on the spot.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-261.jpg

Oh boy, I bet Wakka's just thrilled by this revelation. So much for Seymour's claim he's supporting the heathens as a person, not a religious leader. Half the religious leaders of Spira are here to support it. Did the church plant the idea of this mission in their minds as well?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-262.jpg

That's just mean. You're going on my shit list, Kinoc. Right up there with that chick from the Goers.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-263.jpg

Kinoc knows Auron from way back, it seems, though when and why is unclear. Maybe from his first bout of guardianship. Either way he knows Auron well enough to catch the rude muttered response to his questions. (Spoilers: Your mom; your mom.)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-264.jpg

They're pretty subtle about it but I take the hint and save. FYI: There's a treasure chest tucked behind the left weapons rack. I hate it when games hide things via camera angle that would be really easy to spot from the character's perspective...

It's not worth showing the random NPC dialog but Sally's Al Bhed is really improving. It's possible to figure out a lot of words from the letters she's collected and context. Though I discovered I missed one in Luca so there's a bit of backtracking in my future...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-265.jpg

That was abrupt. I thought the plan with to stuff a box with sinspawn and maybe make them squeal for mommy via sharp sticks and rocks. Who let the spawn out?

This is your standard-for-this-game "looks like one/stats like four" boss monster. The claws block damage to the torso so you're supposed to target them first. The head periodically makes little "hurk hurk" noises and you gotta smack it before it vomits poison on you. Much like a cat. And of course the arms regenerate after a while.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-266.jpg

It's not too much of a problem though.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-267.jpg

As soon as the monster falls, Sin appears - this time in the form of an oil spill. Lucil leads the Chocobo Knight charge. Yes, charging Sin on armored chickens.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-268.jpg

That went well.

I can't find a video so I'll try to describe what happened. As soon as Sin rises above the water, now looking more like some kind of whale than a bubble or tentacle monster, the cannons stationed atop the cliff fire at it. Chunks of sinspawn fall off into the water and charge the troops on the shore. After a very brief clash, Sin makes his shiny aura zap everybody on the shore. The sinspawn are vaporized and the humans are slaughtered instantly.

And what of our heroes? Were they far enough away at the command center?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-269.jpg

Yuna has survived but she's a beast so that's no big surprise. That girl'd live through anything. Seymour's made of the same stuff - he's even already up and fighting the revived monster we just killed! No, I don't know why it came back like that.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-270.jpg

And we've still got Auron! Cool. The party is now Yuna, Auron, and Seymour. I'm okay with that. Sure, Sally was insanely fast and the story won't be the same without her self-centered whining and clueless commentary but I'll manage. Lulu and Wakka still hadn't gotten their stats swapped so they could be terribly useful in their new roles and Nekoman never even talked to me, so I'll get by without them.

Best part is Seymour starts with Cura so he gets to be my cure bunny for the first few rounds of combat. Same strategy as five minutes ago except I sacrifice Ifrit to the gods of Massive Damage rather than Val and I can't swap party members.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-271.jpg

The Mary Sue ain't dead

The whole beach is littered with dead bodies but somehow Sally, who must have fallen from the cliff several elevator rides above, is perfectly fine. She wanders around, "checking for survivors" (read: looting bodies) and after a half dozen or so actually finds one.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-275.jpg

He's right, Yuna. You exhausted all your aeons in the last two boss battles. Plus it's Sin. You'd want at least four more summoners (in pentagram formation!) before you even think of trying it that way.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-276.jpg

Fun Fact: Sally watched The Little Mermaid one hundred and fifty seven times growing up and dressed as Ariel for Halloween twice. None of that can excuse the fact that she swims after the giant ocean monster when it leaves.

Inside Yuna meets her next and possibly final rival summoner.

Isaaru is the opposite of Dona: a really nice guy. His guardians are his "brothers" who bear no resemblance to him at all. In a game where half the player characters are Sin-orphans, I'm inclined to guess they're all from the same temple orphanage or something. I doubt the game says anything on the matter.

Note the little lizard monkeys hopping around on the statue in the first frame. So cute!! They follow people around the temple area but nobody mentions what they are or even acknowledges their existence. I want one.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-289.jpg

For some reason Isaaru and Maroda wait until the big group meeting is over and approach Sally alone to mention this tidbit. Is this another secret Yuna's too pure and innocent to hear? And... why the heck would you tell Sally when Auron The Great is right over there?

;_; I don't wanna.

HATE.

If you asked me which trial I hate most, I wouldn't be able to say. I hate them all in their own special little way. This one, for example, requires the use of the shiny reset spot to complete. It resets the pillar but not the spheres, which is stupid and non-intuitive. HATE.

Lufia 2 never would have done this to me. ;_;

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-292.jpg

Past the trial, Dona and her manmeat show up to do the praying fun time soon as Yuna's done. Barthello's a bit of an Auron fanboy, making Dona jealous and maybe a little insecure.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-293.jpg

She takes it out on Yuna. Yuna, being Yuna, does not respond in a satisfactorily catty way so Sally just withholds the information about summoners disappearing. That'll show her!

In other news, Yuna's got a new pet.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-294.jpg

That's not its name.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-295.jpg

Here's a little more of Gatta whining. Thought you'd want to see the meager results of this nugget of reader input. Yay.

The team spends the night at the temple because Yuna wants to cast cure on everybody she can find. Kimhari points out he has Pray now but nobody wants to bring a fiend into the temple just so he can Pray at people. All the fiends around here would probably finish the civilians off or turn them to stone anyway.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-296.jpg

Yuna oversleeps (still probably getting less than four hours in) and everybody relieves stress by mocking her mercilessly. So damn cute. Would be cuter if her bed head was noticeably different from how her hair normally looks.

As much as I dislike FFX's story, I really love the NPCs that are in it and Isaaru, in particular, is one of my favourites. He's a really nice guy! He and his brothers just want to do what's best for the world, though he gets a little lost in X-2 when he [becomes a tour guide because he doesn't know what to do with his life].

As for Dona... well, I don't necessarily dislike her (at least not anymore), but she's a bit abrasive, yeah. Still, I'm glad they don't play up the rivalry thing too much, or carry it over into the next game, because Dona turns out to be somewhat of a nice person, albeit tempermental. Her conversations with Bartello are also a riot to watch, but that's neither here nor there.

Oh, and Elma's another favourite, but there's not much else to say other than she's pretty funny. Anyway, good characters abound!

That he may be, but I NEVER got over the fact that he's voiced by Raiden --a fact I learned before reaching this point in the game. It's really awkward when MGS2 is your second PS2 game, and FFX is your immediate third, with less than two days of rest between. I kept expecting Isaaru to cartwheel everywhere.

They're overrunning a temple... I *think* it's maybe all the way up in Zanarkand but I could be wrong. Anyway, each monkey has another "soul mate" monkey somewhere in the temple, and you get vaguely obtuse clues when you examine them. You need to help them all pair up for... some reason that escapes me, but probably boils down to "I did the damn puzzle because I wanted to get 100%".

You have to pair them up because Yuna and Rikku don't like Cid and Raiden using a historical site, one with great emotional significance (to them,) as a tourist trap. By unleashing the horde of monkeys, the tourists are scared off and Cid and Raiden have to shut down the operation.

Also... while the Bevelle Cloister is the stuff of nightmares, at least it gives out the treasure freely instead of hiding it behind further puzzles. Which is good, because you can never visit it again.

With all the characters who pop up along every single path along this pilgrimage, you'd think they'd just form some kind of caravan. A little extra recruiting and they could pull a Suikoden on Sin's ass.

Not that I really want to run around with jerks like these but maybe we could hitch them up to some wagons or something.

They parrot the rumors of MIA summoners that everybody else has already heard and are generally mean meanie heads. Kimahri plans for their future beatdown.

Horrifying thought: Belgemine is like if Rydia and Rubicante had a kid. I'm not looking for that fanfic but I bet it's been written.

Belgemine's aeon is pretty badass and the battle looks pretty hopeless until Yuna's first aeon dies. That's when you realize she can summon another and keep going. Belgemine sticks with just the one so even if Yuna hasn't seen a single battle, she'll probably win.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-300.jpg

Yuna learns a new trick. Feed the aeons items and they'll learn new spells and abilities. There's not a whole lot to be done with it with the items readily available right now. Next trick down the line deals with boosting their stats - far cooler and easier.

I'll focus on a particular aeon if anyone has requests. During prior playthroughs I always just dumped my spare items into the aeons at random and eventually just threw Bahamut at everything that required summoning.

The team reaches the banks of the Moonflow. It's a pretty lake-or-river with pretty flowers and at night it lights up with pretty sparkles. Auron shoots down Sally's suggestion before she can even make it. Lamer.

Our next stop lies on the other side of the Moonflow and the fastest way there is to get a ride on a creature called a shoopuf. It's like a dinosaur crossed with a whale and trained to bear passengers. Shoopuf story time!

Yuna was eight at the time. It sounds really cute - chibi-Yuna falling off a dinosaur and having a splashy great time and the stoic Kimahri fretting over his soggy charge. She's much bigger now and has surely learned better so we don't have to worry about it happening again.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-303.jpg

A sobering experience, indeed.

This butt shot is the best look we get at the shoopuf, by the way.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-304.jpg

The shoopuf driver's voice is awesome. He's like Jar Jar Binks if Jar Jar was only in two scenes. But he's against stacking weird magical creatures and thus the chocobo riders have to go around the Moonflow instead.

If they joined my party they could just wait until Sally crossed to the other side and take the Viki express but noooo. Should be a while before we have to deal with them again.

I only remember them because of the shoopuf driver. I want him to join my army too.

Because I really don't want to walk all the way back to Luca for the Al Bhed Primer I missed right now, we're taking the shoopuf!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-306.jpg

On the Shoopuf ride across the Moonflow, the Besaid Buddies share a story of why machina are evil (except the ones used for sports) and why Sin appeared in the first place. A thousand years ago, mankind engaged in a massive machina war and developed the equivalent to nukes. Sin nuked the nukes* and continued wrecking havoc on the world into the present.

Under the water here is a ruined city, by the way - much like the one Sally helped explore at the beginning of the game. It was one of the cities wiped out by Sin.

* Major FFX-2 spoilers: The big one didn't get nuked after all.

Thash be kidsnappersh!

Things Yuna has bad luck with:
- Al Bhed
- Shoopuf rides

Clearly it was a mistake to combine those. The blurry Al Bhed dude grabs Yuna off the basket and into the water. Sally and Wakka, still the only two party members who can swim, dive in after her.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-308.jpg

Note: Only instance of someone speaking underwater in this game as far as I can recall.

Yuna's in a bubble on top of the mecha starfish here so at least the Al Bhed made sure not to drown her. But with Sally and Wakka throwing electrical attacks at the thing for a couple minutes, it's amazing they don't accidentally kill her themselves.

Amusingly Yuna counts as participating in this battle but having missed all her turns she gets no experience. It'd be cool if there was a way to free her from the bubble and have her join in the fight but Yuna doesn't learn how to swim until the next game.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-309.jpg

I love you, shoopuf driver, but that's your last line.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-310.jpg

Well this is awkward. Wakka spewing racist slurs and nobody has the nerve to just tell him Yuna's half-Muslim. I mean.. Al Bhed. Yeah.

After a while Sally's like "Hey how 'bout that Blitzball?" and somehow they make it through the rest of the trip okay.

Auron's an asshole but now he's an asshole to the player too. He's the only person on the far shore to offer a hint as to what to do next and you have to do the complete opposite. See, Yuna's mobbed by her groupies and Lulu and Wakka are standing nearby voicing expectations this could take a while. Kimahri's off in a corner grooming himself.

So instead of guarding Yuna, Sally's got to wander off into the wilderness alone like an idiot, hoping not to be eaten by monsters, until she finds a corpse on the shore.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-312.jpg

Okay, she doesn't look very corpselike now but this is after the cheesecakey cutscene where she gets up and peels off her Al Bhed diving suit and wiggles her ass a bit. You can go find it on youtube if you must, pervs. She's, like, fifteen!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-313.jpg

So yeah, Rikku was the one operating the mecha starfish that kidnapped Yuna for five minutes. She even has the nerve to blame Sally for the ouchies!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-314.jpg

Sally introduces Rikku with a poor (but successful!) attempt to disguise her ethnicity from Wakka. And then, out of left field, Yuna decides to have her attempted kidnapper join the party. What is wrong with you, girl?!

Somewhere between leaving Luca and now, Auron has wrested control of this pilgrimage from Lulu. Before he joined she was in charge of guardian membership, the itinerary, and packing arrangements. By now Auron has final veto on whether Rikku becomes a guardian.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-315.jpg

~_^

Even Auron cannot withstand the dreaded Jailbait Wink attack!

Okay, the whole point of this was to show Rikku's freaky swirly eyes. All Al Bhed have eyes like that, which is part of why they all wear goggles, and why Yuna's eyes are mismatched.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-316.jpg

Miss Perky has joined the party. Despite the obviously weird eyes, Wakka doesn't catch on to the Al Bhed Rikku thing, leading me to believe he doesn't look at women's faces at all.

Rikku's voice actress is Tara Strong (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0152839/). You may know her from Powerpuff Girls, The Little Mermaid 2, or Rugrats. She's... perky. Very.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-317.jpg

Rikku joins pretty far into the game and on the sphere grid she's all the way back at square one. Auron was like that too, mind you, but he's a badass even then. Rikku dies in two hits and can't do much damage. Her main advantage is starting with Steal... at least on the normal grid where nobody else could have gotten it before now. On our grid, Sally's been stealing for a couple hours already.

On the normal grid, my favorite thing to do with Rikku is hold out on the sphere grid a little while longer, till you get a Level 2 Sphere Key and slip into Yuna's path shortly before Curaga. On the International Grid you can get the same result but it feels like a happy accident instead of getting away with something.

So what shall we do with Rikku? Sally's already on the thief path but that needn't rule out that option. We've already got three characters with some level of black magic (Lulu, Wakka, Yuna) and two with some white magic (Yuna, Kimahri). She could also backtrack over the path Sally took getting to Steal into combat oriented ground. Or there's so much tangled around that side of the board she could do something ADD-ish and we'll see what happens.

It's up to you!

Note: I like Rikku, I just don't like when she acts like a little kid.

The only thing I like about Rikku is snake? Snake? SNAAAAKE!

It's actually one of those little in-battle details that I appreciate for the attention paid to it, but which also makes me :( because I like all the characters. Whenever a Lightning-casting foe targeted her, and she cried out in response, I'd switch in the heaviest tank to hit it back (that is, if she wasn't already on Reflect status already.) The way she "cured" herself of her phobia by X-2 was also rather drastic.

Amusingly, her late entrance, and her ability to reduce Machina to spare parts in a single turn, meant Tidus would often serve as her main support. Shot their affinity scores through the roof even before I reached Macarena.

Black Magic Spheres would be the best way to give a tank the thunder spells, I guess. If I can hold out for a couple Friend Spheres, that'd be a nice way to send her across the board to where Lulu is floundering in Auron's path. (And return Lulu to something she can handle... -_-)

I'll look into how to go about it.

Sorry. Welcome to the land of the guano. They live among tree roots and appear to be part tree. Or at least have mold growing on them. Tromell, Seymour's manservant, invites Yuna (and her guardians if they insist) to visit the Shirtless One.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-319.jpg

The troops seem to be having a disagreement. Sally ducks out of the tiebreaker vote before things get ugly.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-320.jpg

Guado don't have paintings, they have weird squishy-looking possibly-organic panels. Sally observes Seymour looks like none of them and that's because he's a hybrid. Pre-saved, magically-badass, better gas millage, the works.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-321.jpg

After Sally finishes gossiping and snooping around, Tromell takes the party into another room to stand around and wait while Sally talks to everybody. Rikku, at least, is simple.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-322.jpg

Even Sally is getting tired of Lulu's travel guide shtick. She's not going to stop any time soon though.

"She must ease... my suffering." Ugh, Seymour's so creepy.

Auron extracts Yuna from a potentially sticky situation and the team holds a meeting out on Seymour's doorstep.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-329.jpg

Auron: Con
Lulu: Pro?
Wakka: Con
Rikku: Pro
Sally: Con
Kimahri: Mew

Seeing there's a tie, Yuna decides to consult with a few more trusted people in the Farplain. That's the Land of the Dead hereabouts and the current residence of her daddy.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-330.jpg

Rikku and Auron stay in the lobby while everybody goes in to watch the show. I bet they'll find all sorts of things to chat about while they wait.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-331.jpg

Not quite the show Seymour put on but still kinda neat. Wakka's having a chat with his brother, Chappu, who does not look anything like Sally. He tells Chappu all the sordid details of his life now and Chappu just floats there. Staring. These illusions are kinda lame, though being able to replicate any dead person is mildly impressive.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-332.jpg

Yeah, that's kind of a big obstacle. I mean, the dead don't even leave bodies behind in Spira! Sally tries to hint Lulu should hook up with her baby daddy without revealing she knows but Lulu doesn't want any of that.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-333.jpg

Martyr much?

Sally realizes the spotlight is getting dangerously close to shifting over to Yuna entirely and the daddy issues just aren't cutting it anymore. So how about...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-334.jpg

Mommy!!

And if it has the added effect of making Yuna think of unhappy marriages, all the better.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-335.jpg

Eek! A ghost followed them out! Poor Auron's so scared he has a minor heart attack or seizure or something back there but everybody's too busy staring at the ghost to notice. No wonder he didn't go into the Farplain. He's scared of ghosts! Poor guy. :3

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-336.jpg

It's the ghost of Seymour's dad and per orders, Yuna resends him. He drops a brooch of some kind and which is weird because ghosts don't wear jewelry. Shoulda taken his mask off to find out who it really was.

Damnit, Lulu, stop going through your entire decision making process aloud. You're hurting Sally's head with all the contradictions and everyone knows you're gonna end up in a loveless marriage with Wakka eventually.

The kittycat disappeared without telling anyone, so Sally wanders around trying to find him for a while till I find the actual next checkpoint. Trying to leave to the next area and encountering Shelinda of all people. She reports Seymour just left a little while ago, so I assume Yuna's been snooping through his house on the pretense of looking for him this whole time. Coulda invited the rest of us...

Welcome to the worst mini-game ever. Dodge lightning bolts lots and lots of times in a row to win fabulous prizes, including half of Lulu's ultimate weapon. There's no point in even trying until you get equipment with No Encounters on it. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-345.jpg

This pretty much sums up how the battles are going around here. A character gets experience so long as they perform an action in battle. Rikku only has to survive one action before I can swap her out of the active team again, yet about half the time Kimahri's obligatory action is casting life on her. Yuna has Life as well but she packs a mean Watera and is generally better served lowering the number of things that can attack Rikku when she stands back up again.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-347.jpg

The cycle of dying and being raised takes its toll on a person after a while... Having the endurance of a 1st edition D&D wizard but not the mental endurance, team newbie Rikku succumbs before any of the veteran members, only halfway through the area.

Luckily some moron built an inn in the middle of this hellhole and the group stops there to rest and try to get Rikku on some medication. It's a Rin Travel Agency so they're able to get her records from branches elsewhere in the world and sort things out in a few hours.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-348.jpg

Begging ladypains, Yuna leaves the rest of the team to deal with the crazy girl. I think Auron's starting to doubt his ability to deal with this troupe of teenage girls. Sally's a tomboy so that's not too difficult to understand but Yuna's all girly and fragile. Hopefully Lulu will deal with... whatever so he doesn't have to figure that stuff out. And now there's Rikku. Their little chat outside the Farplain wasn't really enlightening and that was before she went all crazy-like.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-349.jpg

Hey look! It's Rin himself! He's the kind of teacher you never want to have. If you admit to not doing your homework, he gives up on you right then and there. If you say you've been studying hard he gives you more homework. Lose-lose situation.

Rin knows Auron from way back when but when he tries to catch up, Auron doesn't want anything to do with him. What a jerk.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-350.jpg

Speaking of jerks, Sally decides to go spy on Yuna. Badly. I mean, she heard Yuna through the door making weird... noises. Why would she try to peek? It's a good thing Yuna wasn't... you know... doing anything. Weird, you know? Um.

Out in the lobby, Rikku's mental state has continued to deteriorate. She is now having long arguments with the storm itself. The party only stays long enough to get Rikku's prescription filled and a pill down her throat. No amount of rest is going to help her until they get her out of the stormlands.

Let's talk Sphere Grid!

I should be able to get a Friend Sphere from playing Blitzball to warp Rikku across the map to Lulu's current location. Lulu's sitting pretty next to a +4 STR spot. I won't be moving either of them until I can get that. Unfortunately that's probably a half dozen Blitzball matches away at best.

Lulu as a tank is turning out to be pure fail. She does less than 50 damage on physical attacks and I'm fighting things with at least a thousand hit points. Once Rikku is moved, I think it's time to think about what else can be done with Lulu.

Wakka does about as much damage with Watera vs these lightning monsters as Lulu does with Water. So he's not great but he's not beyond hope. Yuna, meanwhile, is doing almost three times as much damage with a single spell as either one of them.

Kimahri's path through white magic has finally brought him within spitting distance of a cure spell. About damn time. I never realized skipping Cure would hurt so much but it really wears down Yuna's MP quickly.

Auron is Auron, just with status ailments hidden in his back pocket instead of stat breaking. Sally is Sally, despite being on the thief path instead of her own. Funny how that works.

So...are many of the characters worthless without their original sphere grid? How far along is everybody on their chosen paths?

Most of it is a matter of conquering base stats. Wakka will become a decent mage over time and the difference between he and Yuna will be negligible. Kimahri doesn't have any spells that produce raw numbers to compare yet but he's a decent white mage.

A fighter can become a mage but a mage doesn't make a good fighter. Lulu's dolls and Yuna's rods are garbage for physical weapons. Auron's swords and Kimahri's spears are Piercing, which makes them superior physical attackers to start. Kimahri's physical attack is swiftly losing its usefulness. Lancet is his best bet for dealing damage now, being magic based and self-healing.

So yeah. Lulu's the only one really hurting. Yuna probably would be if she'd gone the fighter route as well.

I forgot my half-finished next update on the computer at work yesterday but I promise to have something to post Sunday night.

In other news, I can't get the trick to manipulate Blitzball prizes to work. Maybe I don't understand how to do it, maybe it doesn't work on the International version. I went ahead and spent Rikku's levels on getting to the tank side of the board the long way and Lulu's a lot closer to picking up Hastega than I realized.

We're less than twenty yards from the far end of the Thunder Plains and Yuna wants to stop to chat. Maybe she likes to watch Rikku suffer. She wouldn't be the only one...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-354.jpg

Lulu collects from the betting pool and everybody else argues against Yuna's decision.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-355.jpg

Auron's argument is very brief. Being Ye Grande Olde Guardian, his saying she can go ahead and marry fizzles everybody else's protests.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-356.jpg

In a brief moment of lucidity, Rikku expresses her support of Yuna, then resumes shouting at the weather. Poor girl, I hope she gets better or we might have to put her down...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-357.jpg

HOORAY! Out of the Thunder Plains and into the Shiny Forest. So pretty!

Auron explains Yuna isn't getting married for love but for some strange plot she's hatching on her own. It must be a pretty bad plot, since she's not telling her guardians. Her guardians would probably be obligated to stop her if they knew she was going to do something suicidally stupid.

The chocobo girls have caught up and have been hired to help with the wedding. Seymour's told an awful lot of people about this wedding considering Yuna still hasn't told him yes. He probably knows she'd rather go through with it than disappoint everyone and is making sure everyone knows.

Further into the forest, we encounter a familiar face.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-359.jpg

He's so much more likable when it's just him and Dona's nowhere to be found. Unfortunately "nowhere to be found" is the problem.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-360.jpg

Just as a guardian must guard his summoner, a guardian does not guard anyone else's summoner. Rikku awakens from her madness just enough to feel a pang of guilt over Dona's fate.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-361.jpg

The totem pole harpist lives here and introduces a poetic nature-happy mini-game. It's not as bad as the lightning dodging mini-game but still pretty horrible. You run into blue butterflies and avoid red butterflies, trying to collect all seven blue butterflies in thirty seconds. This is another one not worth trying before getting No Encounters equipment but my main problem is getting lost in this forest all the time.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-362.jpg

This time it's Auron who wants to take a detour. He hacks through a fallen tree in about three swings and leads everybody into a hidden grotto for an educational segment.

I don't really know what this is but it's really pretty. A twisty tree growing out of a small lake and with a bubble up in the middle of the tree. The water can also be walked on even though I don't think it's frozen. It might be like when Yuna danced on water way back when but for everybody.

Magic makes you float!

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-364.jpg

Auron you asshole! This is one of the worst boss fights if you don't know what to do, too. If you physical attack, it magics you. If you magical attack, three out of four times it'll heal it. And if you happen to pick the right element, it'll scramble which element does damage.

I ended up using only four characters in this fight. Sally casting Haste on Auron and Yuna, Kimahri curing, Auron attack baiting, and Yuna casting black magic every time it reveals its weakness by magicing Auron.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-365.jpg

The prize! It's a video sphere made by Jecht when he was traveling with Auron and Braska ten-plus years ago.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-366.jpg

Jecht made it to show his little girl what daddy was up to when he disappeared. Young Sexy Auron, by the way, is the real reason everybody wants Squenix to make Final Fantasy X-0.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-367.jpg

Jecht added to his recording as they traveled. By the time he reached this grotto, he'd given up ever getting home and left it here in case Sally ended up in Spira too.

It's probably fate I got an error message when I tried to take a screenshot of Auron telling Sally Jecht loved her. So let's assume that didn't happen and continue whining.

Jecht made a bunch of these spheres and each one you find opens up another super attack for Auron. Finding all of them is the key to getting Auron's ultimate weapon, making it the only one that's not too much trouble to get.

Just around the bend, the party takes a break at the local Rin's. Everybody's talking about the wedding and O'aka is most upset because Rin is the only person around to have set up a shop nearby. O'aka's inventory is a lot cooler than Rin's though.

There's a Jecht sphere behind a post-game boss that appears when you get Shiva - and it's impossible to beat those bosses without the other ultimate weapons. This is one of the nastier changes in the International Version.

Unless they've changed the way it works for the International edition, it should be pretty simple to get both Lulu and Yuna's ultimate weapons. You are collecting all of the Aeons over the course of this playthrough, right? Rikku's isn't very hard either, although it does take some time.

(Also, Tidus' chocobo chase is a pain in the ass, but it's nowhere near as hard to complete as fucking Kimahri and his fucking butterfly course.)

Lulu's still the lightning dodging, right? I do not have the patience for that crap. Yuna I should be able to do. Forgot about that one. I'm making sure to grab the destruction sphere treasures in each temple as I go. I seem to recall that being a part of it.

I hate the chocobo race. So much.

Lulu's, I believe, though you get her actual weapon there and not the crests. (By the way, you might want to pick up Tidus's crest right after the Yunalesca fight, Elfir, as it's not the only one guarded by a dark Aeon (http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Celestial_Weapon#Sun_Crest) later on...)

Elfir, it looks like you don't need the Jecht sphere to unlock Auron's ultimate weapon.

I never had that much trouble with the chocobo race. It only takes me a few goes to do it, once I remember how it works.

The key is that you're always going to be targetted by birds, so you want to be turning frequently. Conveniently, there's a lot of balloons all over the course! Force your way in front of the trainer, then go nuts collecting balloons, making sure you never run in a straight line for more than a couple of seconds.

You can take the corner on the inside, but it's better to go on the outside so you can see where the birds are spawning from. They usually put balloons out there, too.

You usually need at least 12 balloons to get Tidus' seal, and add one for every bird.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-374.jpg

Last time I checked, Yuna was agreeing to being a bride, not a political prisoner. She certainly acts like it's the later. Tromell is here to escort Yuna to her husband-to-be instead of her guardians. It's Guado custom but I would think summoner custom would trump that. Can't we at least travel together?

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-375.jpg

Auron indicates the guardians support her wherever this hairbrained scheme takes her. Sally watches her go with eyes filled with uncertainty. Thump thump. Thump thump. Why does her heart beat so?? Yuna is just a friend... a dear friend, and yet... Ok, my shoujo ai wank attempt kinda sucks. I'll try harder next time.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-376.jpg

And this is why you don't surrender your summoner to a non-combat character! Rikku's buddies pop up and try to kidnap her again.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-377.jpg

We know enough Al Bhed now to get that guy's meaning but just in case Rikku translates. This boss fight is going to involve preventing the party from using magic or aeons at all. That kinda sucks seeing as I've gotten pretty addicted to using magic for everything.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-379.jpg

Some more arguing in the crazy space language. Rikku says she's protecting Yuna, the shirtless wonder tells her she's on her own now. After all that's through...

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-380.jpg

Oh right, that. Guess even Captain Oblivious could figure that one out.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-381.jpg

Yeah! You tell him, Rikku! It's these Rikku vs Racism scenes that make her character work. She's the least isolationist Al Bhed you'll find, with the possible exception of Rin, but the whole time she's got to deal with being considered a traitor to humanity by followers of Yevon. True Believers can counter any argument with "god did it" so it's incredibly frustrating.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-382.jpg

It doesn't help that she was actually getting along with Wakka pretty well until he finally figured that little tidbit out. He mostly just needs time to figure out what a prick he's being.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-384.jpg

Snow mobile time! This is one of the few times the affection system in this game comes into play. Sally will have a conversation with Lulu, Rikku, Kimarhi, or Auron on the trip to the temple. Going into this I really had no clue who Sally would be matched with but I like this result.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-385.jpg

KITTY!

A better question would be "What do you think about Rikku?"

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-386.jpg

Because the answer's a lot nicer that way.

That's it. The girls get much longer conversations if they win the affection rating. Lulu's isn't that interesting since she just reinforces the Wakka-Chappu-Al Bhed-Sin backstory. There's more than enough of that in the main plot already. Rikku will talk about what the Al Bhed are up to in trying to kidnap all the summoners. And Auron's just a dick, as always.

On to the temple.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y9/trynchan/FFXLP/LP-FFX-I-387.jpg

That line's more for Wakka's benefit than the temple guard's, I think. Auron can intimidate practically anybody into letting him do what he wants, even if he wants a heathen to desecrate a temple to Yevon.
