Now I’ve always liked Luigi. I liked him before he even had a name and my cousin and I would fight over who got to be “the green one”. Some of the love may be a result of the fact that I didn’t realize there was a “green one” until I could afford a second controller and so his presence was new and exciting, but that’s beside the point.

Mario is Missing! features Luigi trying to save Mario from, um... well, it’s not too clear... by running around the world visiting famous places for uh, well, you don’t know why.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/aMarioisMissingU000.png

But I admit to finding it fun.

The first city is Rome!

This game is how I got my parents to buy me an SNES.

After the rather rude entry, we discover that Mario has been dropped into a snowfield where Luigi and Yoshi are hanging out by a castle. Why not?

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/aMarioisMissingU002.png

Ladies and Gentlemen, in case you didn't know, Mario has a great ass:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU003.png

After dusting himself off, Mario attempts to join Luigi and enters the castle by another means:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU005.png

Luigi heads inside, and Yoshi wonders what the heck is going on:

It did not improve on morphine, by the way.

The first city is in my pants!

No! Because I didn't enter the first door during the screenshot-taking playthrough since I was confirming that the cities are not random. So the first and the second cities will be switched, mwa hahahaha.

Anyway, Luigi enters a room with several doors and the gate closes behind him... and there's football, hooray!

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU002.png

And emerges from a pipe in a city that is not in Antarctica.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU003-1.png

Which is promptly blocked off.

Poor Luigi! Where could he possibly be? What horrors await him? Hey, is that a cop? Cops are helpful, right? But it must be really hard to figure out where you are since this game teaches geography, huh?

Huh, this may be the only game I've ever beaten out of real SPITE. I just remember my friend and I were so bored and for some reason we forced ourselves to finish this POS.

I think in my head it was going to be a Mario platformer in the REAL WORLD, but if I remember right it's more like a bad Carmen Sandiego in Mario's clothes.

I was stuck on this game forever until I realized that you can go down the streets in the background and foreground. After that, I actually came to enjoy the game in a way, even playing through the whole thing in one sitting every so often.

The rest of tonight's updates are going to focus on game mechanics for those who are interested, the remaining days of the playthrough are going to be more about the cities than the game itself, but talking about actually playing the game is useful, eh? Beijing is probably a good one to go light on the city discussion anyway since people heard about it so much this summer.

First, the "pause" menu:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU012.png

I'll go through all of these tonight, for now we're just going to take a look at the city map:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU013.png

Fun! Note the blue circles with "i"s in them. These are famous landmarks.

And here's something random. The game designers actually tried to follow the layout of the real city (the Great Wall isn't a good example, but in later cities it's really well done).

Note the location of the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven in the real Beijing, (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=39.917955,+116.396027&daddr=39.88746,116.412506&hl=en&geocode=&mra=mi&mrsp=1,0&sz=13&sll=39.896831,116.404095&sspn=0.063479,0.108833&ie=UTF8&ll=39.904337,116.400146&spn=0.063472,0.108833&z=13&msa=0&msid=101194856093389786727.00043ee8de7ddd45f7494)t hen look at the landmark logos. Also note the general street layout (zooming out will help for that). Fun!

A question for the audience: Is anyone unable to use Google Maps? Because that's going to be a pretty important part of this Let's Play after tonight.

Violentvixen

The game never really spells out your task for you, but I suppose it's safe to assume people would head for the landmarks, where you find an information booth! It's probably not supposed to be Peach, but really. They didn't even edit out the crown.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU026.png

Trying to talk to Not Peach (perhaps Pants? Are we still calling characters that?) only lets you ask why the landmark is closed, and gets you some basic information and a pamphlet about the problem, which is clearly not a pamphlet but a newspaper.

So that's great. Luigi's stuck on another continent and can't even see the landmarks. In frustration he decides to stomp on a Koopa that happens to be walking around.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU032.png

And... there's a dirty sweatsock! Maybe!

Lather, rinse, repeat.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU044.png

The majority of the Koopas simply explode when jumped upon, three have the dramatic deaths shown here (my favorite is the Wil E. Coyote style)

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU050.png

Heading to the start menu shows you which artifacts you have and which one is currently selected (the white outline).

Selecting the Globulator from the start menu lets you move Yoshi around the planet. Leave the window with Yoshi in the correct city and get a prize!

The remainder of the level is returning the other artifacts. You could, in theory, travel by pipe, but there's no indication of which pipes go where so it's sort of silly.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU101.png

Also, there are some bizarre answers for the artifact questions:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU095.png

The "Computer" option in the menu is a completely pointless checklist of who you've talked to and what about:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU118.png

All three artifacts returned! Now to head back to the castle! Perhaps Yoshi gets to eat!

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU124.png

Or the creature is scared of Yoshi and runs away.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU126.png

After a brief summary of your score with a level password Luigi and Yoshi are returned to the castle... except Yoshi is trapped behind a stone wall. Sorry dude.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU128.png

Also, there's a Koopa kid ravenously clawing at the metal door.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/MarioisMissingU129.png

Whew!

Hell of a first update, but I wanted to get all the mechanics stuff cleared out of the way.

Two things, you get the second screen instead of one like the first, and you can't advance to the next Koopa Kid's floor until all cities are secured (I was going to get to it later to avoid spoiling this).

I didn't know Michael Jackson gave up being a reclusive child molester, moved to China, and became a teacher in a red suit. I've learned something already!

So, what the hell is the story about this game anyway? Mario is in the Mushroom Kingdom, falls through the ground, and then falls into snow, and then falls through the snow, and now he's missing? So Luigi goes to shoot pictures of landmarks now that his brother is dead? Or something?

As a kid, what always boggled my mind about this game is how huge structures like the Tiananmen could just be "stolen." And then, when you get them back, they were in a little baggie being carried around by a Koopa Troopa.

Bowser somehow gets to the REAL WORLD and builds a castle in Antarctica. Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi go after him, but then Mario gets captured. Then: GEOGRAPHY.

I've gotta say, it's good to see that they actually used real sprites for Mario and Luigi in the SNES version of the game, rather than the stuff they used in the DOS version. They were... Special.

In fact, here's Luigi now, so you can actually see what I'm talking about.

Glad you like it so far!

The item is the generic "artifact" sprite. Each of the three artifacts in each city look like that, and they look exactly the same for every city. But you get the little drawing in the pause screen, so that's something.

Awesome! Once upon a time I had the DOS version of this game on a stack of 3.5" floppies. It was significantly different from the SNES version; it played like a point and click adventure game so stomping on koopas wasn't quite the same--you just clicked on them. Also you'd take taxis to get around town. With hula girls on the dashboards. And I don't recall the map screens looking anything like Super Mario World's, they were more realistic.

Except we can't get down the pipe.

Oh, right. Yoshi. Yes, that is the only point of Yoshi, and the only reason why you need to know what city you are in (although it's easy to figure out).

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Rome/MarioisMissingU206.png

There's a zoomed-in version of Europe as well. Nothing happens if you select the wrong city and you can go right back and move Yoshi to the next one.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Rome/MarioisMissingU208.png

And after walking almost all the way across the world we lock Yoshi in the wall again. Nice!

Yeah, it was a vandal. According to the BBC, it was in protest of a film festival.

Pretty sure there was a massive march through Rome that day as well. Something about gay rights. And legalizing pot. At the base of Vesuvius, you can buy ashtrays which have a message for the legalisation of pot.

Man, those Italians really like their pot.

Approximately 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day and are collected at night. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy.

They never told me that. :(

I really want to know the thought process on that one. How you get from "I don't like this film festival" to "I will put red paint in a really old fountain" is beyond me. Maybe it was a film festival about fountain vandals.

I don't intend on digging out my copy of this to play for this thread, but I will say I remember the music being oddly chill

Youtube is a nice source for the soundtracks, I assume it's okay if I link them here? The city soundtracks are slightly different versions of Super Mario World themes. My absolute favorite is for cities we haven't gotten to yet, I'll post them later.

Beijing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvYAWxtH4_E&feature=related) (probably my second-favorite track)

And now for everyone's favorite city.

As shown in the "City Secured" picture earlier in this thread, whenever you finish a level you get a code for it. Turning off the game and entering the code has Luigi enter the castle again through the metal door and temporarily removes the Koopa Kid.

Is... is this supposed to be helpful? Was there a day in school where we learned that alphabet and I happened to be sick? Also, is Cyrillic normally spelled this way? I've never seen that spelling before.

It's actually an alternate spelling, based on transliteration (like tsar and czar, or Mao Tse-Tung and Mao Zedong) and is considered to be archaic. Definitely weird in a game that favors the modern readings of both Mao's name and tsar.

Some quality time with Russian Google reveals that гум (GUM) is this place. (http://www.gum.ru/) Unfortunately I couldn't find any good pictures and was too lazy to place it on a map of Moscow.

Crap, there's a recreation of this thing here at Caesars Palace and I never knew what it was. I just call it that annoying thing all Asian tourists have to get pictures of.

That said, I've played and beaten this game on two different platforms. You really must try the NES game, because it's the exact same game without any graphical satisfaction. The ending is literally Mario walking out of a door, instead of the THRILLING CONFLICT at the end of the SNES game.

And though this game got the cathedral and the Kremlin right, it never was able to undo the damage Tetris did as far as making people think the cathedral IS the Kremlin. To this day people say if you get enough points you can launch the Kremlin into space.

Since the Erechtheion Temple and Parthenon are quite close to each other the map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Parthenon&daddr=Erect%C3%A8on+%4037.972033,23.726311+to:Athe ns+-+Arch+of+Hadrian&hl=en&geocode=FThmQwIdkglqASGOU-BqD2vTtQ%3BFUFoQwId5whqAQ%3BCQ7yCD5nb67gFTdhQwIddh 1qASGk4W6Hbr7q7A&mra=pe&mrcr=1&sll=37.970252,23.732185&sspn=0.004077,0.006802&ie=UTF8&ll=37.9712,23.73107&spn=0.008153,0.013604&t=h&z=16) doesn't really differentiate them well, but you get the idea.

Buenos Aires
Sydney
Mexico City
Paris

Kishi, you're the only one who cares.

Buenos Aires is evidently very, very smoggy, and the music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agqFCVEzvWI) is incredibly repetitive.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/buenossydmexpar/MarioisMissingU002.png

Also, while technically correct I believe that there are some noticable differences between the Argentinian, Mexican and European Spanish languages. I'm not sure if it's just word choices and accents or some major grammar differences, but if anyone would like to elaborate please do.

I actually got stumped for a bit while playing. I went through and got rid of all the Koopas and only had two artifacts! I was befuddled and kept running up and down the southernmost street in the city wondering if I missed one until I took a better look at the map and noticed the half-cropped Koopa on the top street.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/buenossydmexpar/MarioisMissingU010.png

It was promptly destroyed, which secured the third artifact:

The last two cities of this floor!

Nothing really distinctive about the design of the first city:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/buenossydmexpar/MarioisMissingU001-2.png

I never did figure out the significance of the portrait on the building to the right and of the pansy (I'm guessing) on the building to the left. If anyone knows I'd be curious to hear:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/buenossydmexpar/MarioisMissingU012-2.png

One other thing I haven't mentioned (which you guys may have figured out) is that the background of the city moves separately from the foreground. It's a fun touch and this one is more obvious than others:

One interesting note... I put in the code for this level and because it doesn't load after the battle with the Koopa, Luigi enters the room through the door of the level instead of the metal gate as usual. Didn't realize the game corrected for that!

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/cairtokyork/MarioisMissingU000.png

Two for Cairo!

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/cairtokyork/MarioisMissingU003.png

And I immediately receive confirmation that giving away the cities ahead of time is acceptable:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/cairtokyork/MarioisMissingU010.png

The map didn't go too well... unfortunately I couldn't figure out exactly where this mosque was, but I took a guess. Anyway, I've zoomed in (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&saddr=Giza+pyramid+complex&daddr=Mosque+of+Muhammad+Ali+to:the+sphinx,+cairo, +egypt&hl=en&geocode=FfNnyQEdtAnbASFZq8VZFEbirQ%3BCQw6hF6Vrh1KF UMzygEdSvzcASEdN2ql_PzVYA%3B&mra=pe&mrcr=0,1&sll=30.036257,31.27533&sspn=0.070886,0.10643&ie=UTF8&ll=29.977409,31.132915&spn=0.008866,0.013304&t=k&z=16) on the pyramids, which are fun to look at!

Also, Wikipedia has this map (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giza_pyramid_complex), which is quite cool:

The river cuts through the city and yet again the building layout respects that. Neat architecture in the background, too.

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/cairtokyork/MarioisMissingU004.png

Anyway, here's what's missing:

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/cairtokyork/MarioisMissingU007.png

http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo62/annumd/Mario%20is%20Missing/cairtokyork/MarioisMissingU008.png

The floors may be getting more difficult, as a number of questions I was asked at the information booths was not in the pamphlets. Thankfully the pyramid ones were easy, but there may be more questioning the populace in future updates.

Google Maps in New York will give you public transit directions between two locations. Or are you talking about something else?

Ah, okay, it seems that Tokyo defaults to public transit while New York defaults to using a car, I just didn't notice the link on the New York map before adding the third destination.

Yeah, I thought this was really well done for an LP of a game that really doesn't have a whole lot of, well, gameplay. Nice job!

I really liked this one. The pictures of the real landmarks and the maps really went above and beyond, and helped spice up what might have been a pretty bland LP.

You make learning FUN!

I nominate a Carmen Sandiego game for your next project.

Real landmark pictures are cool!

Thanks, I'm glad everyone liked that, I really enjoyed researching these things and learned quite a bit myself. At some point I'll go back and add Street View to more places, but it's really frustrating to use right now and my computer has a hard time handling it on occasion.

I nominate a Carmen Sandiego game for your next project.

I actually debated trying to do Mario is Missing and Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego together initially, but it was 1) hard to coordinate 2) the Carmen Sandiego screens were boring 3) it seemed like there were almost too many opportunities for audience participation and I couldn't figure out how to manage it.

Also, I still really do want to do SimLife next.
