I love this game. In hindsight its the weakest of the four, but man, i still love its quirks.

Aww, yeah, been looking forward to this. I was really into QfG III back in the day, but I guess the modern-day consensus is that it's the least popular? I'll be interested to see the game again and find out if I agree with that opinion now.

Wages of War being the weakest QfG is somewhat analogous to FFTA being the weakest FFT. It looks bad because it's surrounded by better games and made some questionable design choices.

I seriously had no idea that people didn't like this game before reading these LP threads on Talking Time. It's a good game! Anyway, why are we even discussing which QfG game is the weakest in a world in which QfGV exists?
ALSO: My parents recently brought me some boxes of my old stuff, and in one of them was my boxed, complete copy of this game. It was pristine! I put it up on a shelf in my retro gaming room. |

Hot dog, uncharted territory! I got to experience QFG 1 & 2 at a friend's house growing up, but they never got Wages of War, so I'm really looking forward to this now!

Hah, I used to be tormented over the fact that my 386 couldn't handle QFG4 and I was stuck with QFG3.

i actually love the music and art in this game a ton, and the fighter and wizard challenges are pretty great. I spent so many hours playing mancala!
my main issue with the game was that it felt really really sparse. but when it hits, it hits super strong. For a long time this was my favorite of the series. |

I think that's something that I actually enjoyed when I played this game. Having so much space made the world seem big, which is appropriate since you're tracking across the savanna and huge swaths of jungle. Somehow, all that empty space made things seem more epic in scope to me.

Yeah, I seriously had no idea what the real name of that game was for years.

That reminds me, I found a copy of the original Hero Quest at a store that sells old computer crap in San Jose four years ago. It's got everything including someone's hand drawn map. I can upload some pictures.

I have such fond memories of this game. I think one of the main reasons is that it was the first time I played a game on a computer that had a sound card. It blew my mind.

To avoid cluttering an incipient thread with huge iPad pictures, pics will be posted into the Qfg1 thread.
EDIT: Some pics are now posted in the thread for the original. |

I looked inside my old GfQ3 box, and apparently I used it consolidate a whole bunch of old PC game 3.5" floppies and manuals. I managed to find the technical manual (instructions and troubleshooting) for this game, as well as the Famous Adventurer's Correspondence School guide book for the region, but I think that's all you get. I definitely would have kept any maps or other cool things that came with the game, so I don't think there were any. If I have the time, I'll see about posting a few pictures of the guide book or excerpting some of the interesting text tidbits. One thing that I did notice is that the characters in this game use actual Swahili and Arabic greetings at various times when talking to the player, and those are detailed in the manual. I find it weird that they would use actual African languages in a game that seems to be in a fantasy setting, but I guess they did similar things in the first two games. The adventurer's guide also explicity references Egypt at one point, although this is part of a throwaway gag. I guess I should dig it out and do a bit of scanning...

Let's Play Quest for Glory III: Wages of War
Welcome to Let's Play Quest for Glory III: Wages of War! As always the best play to start is usually at the beginning!
I was hoping I could make a video of the introduction of QfG3 but for whatever reason DOSBox doesn't like how Sierra's SCI engine deals with music stuff and so it refuses to record any of it when you make a video. I know there are other ways to capture video but I'm lazy. So, this Let's Play is going to be all pictures (You're welcome Shivam.) The introduction of the game goes over the ending of QfG2 and then quickly transitions into the new setting for QfG3: Tarna. First, let's make sure we can get Garon in to the game: Yay! So, if you wanted to play as a Paladin but couldn't manage to figure it out in QfG2 you're covered... Since I didn't use performance enhancing drugs in the last game Perseii doesn't have maxed out stats. QfG3 gives us 50 points to play around with in order to bring Jackson up to a level that makes the puzzles and monsters in the game not impossible. I throw most of the points into agility and intelligence with a few spread around in climbing and stealth. In the end Garon looks like this: Now for the re-cap: |

To Tarna, cont'd
And with that the game starts! Garon doesn't even have much to go on. All he knows is that there is talk of war and someone suspects a demon... Before we do any adventuring though let's go over Sierra's SCI engine's fancy mouse based interface! The cursor reperesents various different actions such as: look, take, walk, interact you click on items to interact with them and you change the cursor by selecting a new one from a drop down bar activated by moving the cursor to the top of the screen. It's fairly intuitive, QFG has some special icons though: The icons represent from left to right: walk; look; touch; talk (click on yourself to tell something, click on a person to question them); special; magic; inventory item; inventory; options; and help. The magic menu with all of Perseii's spells reduced to icon form. The special actions menu: run; sneak; sleep; character sheet; wait; and help. Jackson's inventory: gold (200 dinars); combat dagger; magic grapel; thieves kit; throwing daggers (5); poison cure pills (1); health pills (20); magic pills (15); rations (10); waterskin; katta pin; introductory letter from Shapier's kattas to Tarna's kattas Next time, Garon explores Tarna, buys stuff, and probably kills something! That is a good question. Either I used it to buy all those pills or the import caps how much moola you have in order reduce players just buying their way out of some problems in the game.
I suppose I could check... |
