Let's play Ittle Dew 2!

So yeah, the first Ittle Dew was basically an extension of Zelda block-pushing puzzles, with a little bit of open-endedness in how you approached them and more neat tools to work with. So it should stand to reason that Ittle Dew 2 would be more of the same, right?

Well... kind of. Ittle Dew 2 places a lot more emphasis on the combat. I mean a LOT more. Like, if Breath of the Wild is Zelda 1 as interpreted by Elder Scrolls, Ittle Dew 2 is Zelda 1 as interpreted by a bullet hell game. Even rank and file enemies are going to be very dangerous, and we're going to have a lot of dangerous encounters ahead of us. Additionally, the game is ridiculously open-ended in how you solve it. You can clear any puzzlecave with just your stick, but you can get a number of tools that allow you to get through them somewhat more easily.

Likewise, the seven dungeons in the game can be cleared in any order. (Okay, there's an eighth dungeon, but it's not available until you beat the other 7.) The game has a recommended order to clear them in, but it also is happy to let you clear them however you damn well please (assuming you can survive in the areas long enough, which is not a given). On my first playthrough I went north to the sixth dungeon and cleared it first.

Hey look, gameplay!

I'll leave the order I tackle dungeons in to you guys. I will, however, take time between each dungeon to go find Jenny Berry. In this game, she no longer pulses with electricity at intervals, but instead gives hints for the more esoteric secrets in this game. And there are a LOT of esoteric secrets to be found in here. Like those Secret Shards. Those are only the tip of the iceberg, but we'll be putting them to good use.

Dungeon List:
  • In the highly safe Fluffy Fields we started in...
    there's a Pillow Fort that's perfect for novice adventurers.
    It'll even have a Tracker inside to help newbies find their way!
  • The southwest part of the island has the Sweetwater Coast.
    Sounds like a great place to build a Sand Castle.
    Which in turn sounds like a great place to hide a Force Wand to shove things around.
  • The eastern part of the island is dominated by Fancy Ruins.
    Word has it that an Art Exhibit has opened up there.
    I hear the Dynamite exhibit is particularly great.
  • The Star Woods in the south have a bit of a pollution problem.
    To the point where there's even a Trash Cave that's accumulated.
    But hey, we've found things like the Fire Sword in trash before.
  • The Slippery Slope to the northwest is a nice quiet place to live.
    But a dude there has a problem with his Flooded Basement.
    I don't have a good justification for a power-boosting Blue Headband being there, but hey, free headband.
  • The gnarly gnorth, aka the Pepperpain Prairie, is home to all kinds of cowbuns and banditos.
    Word has it there's an old abandoned Potassium Mine hidden there.
    The old miners used to use an Ice Ring to work their machinery.
  • The Slayer Jenny patrols the Frozen Court to the southeast.
    Even if you survive her, you may only end up in the Boiling Grave.
    Nothing there but stone and Chain. Better reach than a mundane Stick, though.

Sounds like a grand old safe time, right? Where to first, you jerks?

The Trash Cave is the middlemost dungeon in the game, making for a great indicator of exactly what to expect from the game overall.

The ice block puzzles being baffling is nothing new to Ittle Dew. The extremely mashy combat is a much worse issue.

Also: we find someone's weird metal Note To Self sign! Who could that belong to?

I'm hellbent on finding Jenny Berry, so between each dungeon, that's JUST WHAT WE'LL DO.

This means going to areas that we really shouldn't be between each dungeon. Except I cleared the Pepperpain Prairie first on my first run, so I totally found her here before.

Anyway, based on people's horrible words, we'll tackle the Slippery Slope next, so there's that.

So this is what Secret Shards are used for: opening up the small handful of bonus dungeons (which, of course, can be tackled in any order if you have enough of the shards).

But I don't remember where the other ones are right now, so while you CAN tell me to go hit them all, you would be better served being patient and waiting for me to find them via mundane exploration.

Turns out: most every item in the game exists at three possible points, and each one you find just upgrades the item (mostly a minor buff to how well it works).

Fun fact: there now remains only a single Secret Shard to find! There are more boxes generated that can hold Secret Shards, not unlike how there are more than 20 Secret Seashell locations in Link's Awakening, but after we get the 24th they all turn into Cave Scrolls.
