Johnny Unusual
(He/Him)
I did villain songs a little while back but now we are going to get a bit less specific; Musical Numbers! Via Wikipedia, a number “refers to an individual song, dance, or instrumental piece which is part of a larger work of musical theatre, opera, or oratorio. It can also refer either to an individual song in a published collection or an individual song or dance in a performance of several unrelated musical pieces as in concerts and revues.”
Mostly I’m thinking at a part in a piece of media that is a number, where a character starts to sing and/or dance within a larger piece of media. Though the number itself can be musical, it doesn’t have to be from a musical. There are definitely things that are otherwise not musicals that have a full on musical number. But as for what counts and what doesn’t, it should be a character (or some form of chorus) singing rather than a needle drop, diegetic or not. For example, 76 Trombones is a musical number, Stuck in the Middle with You in Reservoir Dogs or Ghostbusters in Ghostbusters is not. There are always edgecases, but mostly, it should be the characters singing and/or dancing.
Rules
- The musical number can be pretty much from any piece of media that allows it: TV, movies, stage, video games (there are some), podcasts, radio series and probably several other forms I’m forgetting.
- Because it has won before we CANNOT include “Mean Green Mother from Outer Space”. It’s going to be boring if it just up and wins again. Feel free to include any other Little Shop songs, though.
- Covers are good. So are parodies of the musical number style. Audio only or video? That's up to you.
- Select up to FOUR. No more or less. I maintain my right to increase that number down the line but I feel, perhaps foolishly, confident we will get enough that it won’t be necessary.
