Date of death was March 1, 2024. Cause was an acute subdural hematoma. He was 68 years old.

An official statement from Bird Studio reads as follows:

Dear Friends and Partners,

We are deeply saddened to inform you that Manga creator Akira Toriyama passed away on March 1st due to acute subdural hematoma. He was in age of 68.

It's our deep regret that he still had several works in the middle of creation with great enthusiasm. Also, he would have many more things to achieve.

However, he has left many manga titles and works of art to this world. Thanks to the support of so many people around the world, he has been able to continue his creative activities for over 45 years. We hope that Akria Toriyama's unique world of creation continues to be loved by everyone for a long time to come.
We inform you this sad news, with gratefulness for your kindness during his lifetime.

Funeral service was held with his family and very few relatives. Following his wishes for transquility, we respectfully inform you that we would not accept flowers, condolences gifts, visiting, offerings and others. Also, we ask you to refrain from conducting interviews with his family.
Future plan for commemorate gathering is not decided, we will let you know when it's confirmed. We deeply thank you for your understanding and support as always.

Like his work or not (and there's plenty of understandable reasons either way), there is absolutely no denying his influence on pop culture as we know it.

Our local station used to run Dragonball at like 6:30 AM on Wednesdays, and I used to get up early to watch it once a week. I did not stick around for Dragonball Z (I think it was on cable, and we only had an antenna), and I never really adored Dragon Quest as much as others here, but I have fond memories of being up early to watch a fun adventure show.

Rest in peace.

Love Dragon Ball. DBZ not as much, but still a lot of fond memories growing up. This one hurts. Guy was a year younger than my dad too, so feeling extra mortal today. I hope he was able to get most of what he wanted done on Daima. I know that doesn't look like everyone's cup of tea, but a spiritual mulligan on GT with his guidance sounds great to me. Especially since I preferred DB to DBZ. Watching that when it comes out is gonna feel bittersweet.

Never watched Dragon Ball in any of its incarnations, but I have played some DQ and, of course there's Chrono Trigger. This sucks.

Mobile guessing game Gamedle has touching tributes to Toriyama in 3 of its 4 categories today.

I thought I read that Charles Schulz is the most recognized artist in the world.

I have to think that Akira Toriyama would be up on that list as well.

His art is instantly recognizable. Loss of a Legend for sure.
