Fallout: The Lunchbox. Fallout: The Breakfast Cereal. Fallout: The TV Series

So I devoured this series over the past 24 hours. I thought it was excellent. I would like to discuss it here. Spoiler free stuff - aesthetically and tonally, they fucking nailed it. Very rarely it goes a bit overboard and feels a bit pander-y, but honestly those moments are minimal. This feels like the Fallout universe.

Random thoughts below. Major spoilers follow, including the ending:

I like the characters, I like how they're telling the story, I like the acting. I have nitpicks - it's implied ghouls only survive by taking some sort of chem, which unless something like that is suggested in the games I haven't played, I wasn't really aware of. I like them as just weirdo radiation goblins that can't die barring accidents. But it's a nitpick.

Man, though. Making the big bad of the entire Fallout universe essentially capitalism in the form of Vault Tec and the other big tech companies of the world is kind of an amazing move to pull on Amazon's tv streaming service? Implying that the bomb was dropped by companies to sell vaults and weapons and shit makes sense within the world, too, since we never really know what exactly caused the war that ended everything anyway, afaik. I hope Ghoulggins finds Agent Cooper and blows his fucking face off lmao

I struggled to figure out where this took place, since apparently "Filly" is right next to Shady Sands, CA, when originally I thought "oh, an East Coast Fallout, interesting" (I have never played Fallout 76). I'm not up on my deep Fallout lore, and I can never remember which years the games take place in, so I don't know if this is before, after, during, or an alternate universe from Fallout 3/New Vegas/4.

There were several references to the games that were fun, and specifically in the last two episodes, there were explicit references to the Big MT, not only the guy who clearly works for/runs that place, but also the brain in a little car/jar rolling around being a goofy dipshit just like in the New Vegas DLC.

Regarding the ending: how dare they tease New fucking Vegas to me! I know the Lucky 38 when I see it! I paused the shot of the city to see if I recognized anything else like Novac or Helios One, but I couldn't see anything I recognized, which makes sense as I'm sure the Mojave would be much bigger and spaced out farther in reality rather than as small as it is in the game. I appreciate that everyone knows New Vegas is the best Fallout game (fight me) enough to use just a shot of the city as a teaser for what hopefully will become the next series.

Otherwise there was much to enjoy. The show has amazing casting - Walton Goggins as a chem addicted, violent ghoul is amazing, and Kyle Maclachlan continues to impress me with the late career renaissance he seems to be having (he was great in Twin Peaks: The Return, obviously, as well). Matt Berry is an absolutely inspired choice for Mr. Handy. I enjoyed all the people I was unfamiliar with, too - Ella Purnell as Lucy was fantastic.

Beg, borrow, or steal this series if you can, I highly recommend it.

I’m 3/4ths the way through the show. Liking it a lot. It’s very faithful to the spirit of the Fallout I know. (Don’t know 1 or 2 tho). Only bummer is any follow up would be years away, and for whatever weird reason Microsoft is distancing themselves from the project.

There are only eight episodes in a season?! This shit has got to stop. I just finished episode 6. I'm hearing rumblings about the show in podcasts in such so I am hoping it is doing well. Maybe it just took some time?

I'm surprised they placed the show in California and the setting of the original Fallout. I definitely remember Shady Sands. Though looking at things the show takes place over 100 years after it.

I don't know how they're going to put all the threads they've been laying out in the episodes so far together in the next two but I'm not hopeful...

I'm rewatching this because, surprisingly, my wife is watching the series, since she was out of town when it first dropped and I didn't think she'd want to watch it (she's never played a Fallout game). She'd heard good things from her D&D group, who compared it positively to the D&D movie that came out last year. I didn't see it, but they said that movie really nailed the feel of watching people play D&D, and that's exactly how I feel about this series - it really feels like watching someone play a Fallout game (in a good way). She seems to be enjoying Fallout thus far. Anyway, knowing where the plot goes, they do sew some seeds early on that germinate at the end - I think the season ends pretty well.

Tim Cain, one of the original Fallout creators, reviewed the show (he liked it overall) - spoilers for the entire season:

Finished it. I thought Filly was Philadelphia as well. But, it could be any number of towns or even streets in the Greater LA region. They do a good job of pulling things together at the end. And it is getting a 2nd season! Which is good. It does feel and look great. I love all the practical effects.
Interesting take on ghouls. AFAIK they've never explained where they come from in in the game. Them needing to take some sort of drug in order to not go feral is different. But it does seem to be different from how they're handled in the game. I can't imagine they'll ever say that China dropped the bombs (which was the case in the first two games I believe) Amazon probably would like to show this in China and so making Vault-Tec the baddies makes sense.

What a weird terminally late stage capitalism take on the why the vaults were all experiments but I not upset with it and it certainly feels like both our current world and the Fallout out.

I hope we see supermutants at some point.

Fantastic! Thank you! I haven't been around places with much discussion about the show, and I didn't google it because I figured it'd be awhile before they announced whether there'd be a season 2. Turns out it took em like a week lol

Yeah, this series was refreshingly good. Excellent performances, writing was fun, it captured the feel of the game well... I could have done without quite as much flashback stuff and I'm still not a fan of them having Vault-tec be the ones who dropped the bomb because it feels like it shrinks the universe. Not everything has to be a conspiracy! The world can just fall apart due to a lot of factors, which I think was always the intention of the originals. That would be more refreshing than there being some sinister plot. Also, said plot doesn't make any goddamn sense, on the face of it. Anyway. Overall, I'm looking forward to season 2!

Well, just because she suggested Vault-Tec dropped the bomb first doesn't mean they actually did - they didn't show that happening on screen, and so there's an argument to be made that they didn't, because if she had any control over when the bomb was dropped, she wouldn't have it dropped while her daughter was outside doing a kids birthday party with her dad. I don't think they'll ever actually spell out exactly what happened to cause the nuclear apocalypse, just hint at it in various ways. Though who knows, the needs for a tv show narrative are different from video games.

I felt like the important thing there wasn't whether or not Vault-Tec actually started the nuclear holocaust (which I think they probably did not, based on past games and the fact that we know it came suddenly), but that it was willing to. Had no problem with the idea. That doing so could be considered part of their business plan, and that plan was what the vault trio was all about.
