You always get JP in the unit's current job no matter what you do to earn that JP.

And another thing - I don't think you earn any JP or EXP from counter attacks but my memory on that is pretty shaky.

You don't seem to earn anything from counter attacks, sadly, no. Thank you though! That's good to know...

But don't let that discourage you from using them. Your units have lots of opportunities to earn JP and EXP and it's a lot easier to do that when they're not face down in the dirt.

I'm more frustrated by white magic buffs potentially failing, and then not getting any JP from that. I think I really dislike it, when white magic can miss.

Also, Summoners are as powerful as I was hoping. And I didn't expect Geomancers to be able to equip swords snd stuff. Now I understand why they are in the physical job-tree.

I learned the hard way, that women are bad monks in this game. Ramza crushes everything, especially after buffing himself with cheer, or whatever it is. But my female monk did only around 20 damage, half of what Ramza did without a buff. The internet told me it's because that mechanic, that women are worse warriors and better mages is especially pronounced in that job.
Made her a geomancer instead, when possible. That job is fun, I like the instantly cast geomancy.

Monk damage is based on "Strength" (PA) and so you can't use better weapons to boost the damage (but you can use some other gear). It is also based on Brave so if your female Monk has power Brave then that will be another thing working against her.

Geomancer is one of my favorite jobs in FFT.

Specifically, Monk damage is PA squared times Brave/100. If your female Monk is doing 20 less damage, part of that is attributable to lower PA, but I'll bet she has lower Brave as well.

IIRC Monks also receive a bonus based on PA from Martial Arts, so the difference in stat growth can be more pronounced for that class. But women are better at the five point exploding heart technique (Secret Fist uses MA for its success rate).
