Default Class mayhem! - Let's All Play Final Fantasy V Boss Showcase!

Notice! Child's Play is sponsoring a very similar Final Fantasy V class challenge right now! I encourage any and all people interested in doing an FF5 LAP to consider participating in this. You can even post your boss fights from that effort here!

Here's where we have the really interesting bit of the LP! This is where our friendly neighborhood LPing team is going to show you just what happens when you do a class challenge in FF5! But this class challenge has a few twists on the usual faire:

1. Everyone has been given 1 class per crystal that they can use. A hacked save was provided with all jobs unlocked to make this more interesting. (This rule has been stretched and modified a bit; now we're also having 4-classes-from-any-crystals runs too. Basically, any limited class run that sounds interesting is fair game now.)
2. They have two choices on how they can proceed with their party setups: either no more than 2 characters per class or no less than 2 characters per class. They have to stay consistent with this choice too.
3. No more than 2 characters can share the same abilities not native to their class.
4. Swapping between classes is allowed as long as they stick to their assigned classes and the above rules.
5. No more than 4 teams running at a time. Burning out on FF5 is not the goal here, after all.

GUTS TEACHES YOU HOW TO RESIZE IMAGES

As the story-centric LP progresses, we'll be seeing boss fight showcasing from our brave LPing team:

This is going to be fun, although I still think the idea of a Final Fantasy League Draft would've been more amusing.

For those not in the know, none of the end-game bonus classes scale at the lower levels. They basically have !WIN buttons at level one and don't become actually interesting until much, much later. There's also some graphical issues, because since you were only intended to receive them after Galuf leaves, he doesn't have a sprite for them.

I see a lot of teams using Berserkers! I always shunned that class, and I'm looking forward to seeing others put it to use.

It's really a class that plays itself.

Default Chocobo, Go!

Before we get to the actual bosses, I'll get things rolling with a overview of Science Ninja Team Strangerman, for those of you unfamiliar with the classes. Pantz Comb (aka Science Ninja Teal) is our hero, and gets the most awesome job of all: Ninjaaaaa. The Ninja class is one of the more powerful, mainly because of their unique ability to dual-wield. FFV doesn't have any sort of off-hand penalty, so twirling around two daggers is exactly twice as effective as using a single one. The problem in our particular team is that we'll be doing exactly that: dual-wielding daggers. With a few exceptions, Ninjas are limited to relatively weak knives. In a normal game, you'd train up Ninja and switch to Knight or Paladin to dual-wield knightswords, but of course, we don't have that option in this run. We'll be playing knivesies all the way to Exdeath.
Comb also comes with a second innate ability, which is a vastly increased chance of Preemptive attacks. In a preemptive attack, you're given a few seconds to act before enemies' action bars begin to fill. It's not a game breaker, but always nice, and works well with an ability we'll get a little later.
Comberton's third ability is the Throw command. Throw destroys a bladed weapon in your inventory to deal heavy damage to an enemy. No one in our party will have any significant defense or healing capabilities, so ending fights quickly is rather important. Throw will be our primary damage-dealer for the early game, so we'll be spending most of our excess gold on big golf bags full of swords. Throw can also be used with unique scroll consumables, allowing him to dip into elemental damage like a black mage.
Later on, Comb gets Smoke, which allows you to instantly flee from a (fleeable) fight. Those of you familiar with the chicken knife know this will get used quite a bit.
Finally, Comb gets Image, which grants him a chance to evade attacks for a few turns I misunderstood for a very long time. Apparently, one use of Image gives you two Image counters. After every hit/evade calculation is made, if an attack would then hit, it instead removes one Image counter. This is awesome.

Science Ninja Grey is Galuf the Chemist, sporting the Drink command. Drink lets you use powerful self-buffing tonics, which boost stats or replicate beneficial spells. These can be pretty handy, except for two catches. One: they're expendable, and can't be purchased for a good third of the game. Two: They can only be used on the Chemist himself. Unlike, say, a Time Mage, the Chemist can't turn your heavy hitter into a killing machine; he can only make himself suck slightly less for a short time. While it can be given to a better class to self-buff, it's limited application makes it... less than optimal.
He's not useless, however! Galuf's second ability, Pharmacology, makes all potions used by him (on himself and others) doubly powerful. Since we don't have a White Mage, this means Galuf will be playing healer for our little adventure.
Later on, Galuf will get the Mix command. Mix combines two consumables to create a powerful magic effect. They're generally boosted versions of the consumables used, but also allow for some unique effects that you can't get otherwise, like elemental resistance or halving an enemy's defense stat. Mix is absolute shenanigans in certain fights, but can get very pricey very fast.
MUCH later, Galuf can remove afflictions and revive allies for free, though only in battle.

Science Ninja Pink Lenna comes to us as a Summoner, possibly the second most powerful class in the game. Eventually. As a mage, she's entirely dependent on spells, which we won't start unlocking for a good while. Until then, Lenna is going to stab things with her knife. A lot. It would have been much easier to start her as a Ninja until we actually learned a summon, but this is a gorram challenge.
Summon magic, once we get it, is incredibly useful. Summons deal damage, heal, and provide unique buffs, usually to the multiple targets. Their only downside is the ungodly MP cost, which usually limits their use to bosses and particularly tough enemies.

Finally, Science Ninja Fuchsia is Faris the Thief. Thieves are... unique. They have no strength, HP or Magic, and no real combat abilities. The only reason to have a Thief is to master their innately high Agility for later use with the Mimic class (which we won't get), and to steal items you can't normally find in shops. The Steal command, a Fantasy favorite, can nab a variety of items depending on the monster type; mostly potions and ingredients, but also some rare weapons and armor. Some of the best armor in the game can only be stolen from a particular enemy. I'll try to grab it when it comes up, though no one in our party can actually wear it. Steal works rather well to support the Ninja and Chemist; Ninjas can Throw stolen weapons, and Chemists can use stolen ingredients with their Mix ability. Steal gets an upgrade later as Mug, which also deals damage as a normal attack.
Thieves also have Vigilance, an innate ability that prevents Back Attacks. Back Attacks can mess your day up; they switch your front and back rows, and strong enemies can often do massive damage to your casters before you can react. They also gain Flee (which is identical to Comb's Smoke), the ability to see hidden passages, and the ability to dash by holding B. Thieves are nice to have, assuming you can spare the slot for a completely combat-useless character.

You misspelt "Blue Mage" there, my friend.

(Seriously, White Wind + Lvl 5 Doom + Mighty Guard > Summons. Although Titan's nice for a while.)

Fortunately, I don't have to choose! Team Monsters Are Awesome is made up of Blue Mage, Summoner, and Beastmaster (and Samurai, but that's boring). In practice, this means I can catch monsters, control monsters, summon monsters, and even just summon their powers if I'm feeling too lazy to call forth the entire beast. This will be used to hilariously broken effect for cheap boss fights.

Interesting mix of teams. Comb's got a great combo in Thief+Chemist for reasons that...actually, might've been fixed, I don't know.

You don't seem to have mentioned that they're using the GBA version.

Oh they are. It would've been a bit hard to do this with the SNES version, what with the myriad of translations and all that, and the PS1 version... haha no.

Strategy huh?

Unlike the rest of the crew, while I do enjoy FFV I donít have encyclopedic knowledge of it like I do with Battle Network. So while everyone else is going to be doing some crazy strategies, Iím pretty much just going to brute force my way through the game.

KainBartz is a Dragoon. Rather sadly, heís only got two !Abilities; !Jump and !Lance.

!Jump needs no explanation, and itís what Bartz is going to be doing for much of the time. Yeah, it might be a bad idea to leave the rest of my team without a meat shield but eh. !Lance is something Iíve never used personally, but according to the description itís an attack that steals some HP and MP (presumably only if you have a Lance equipped). It sounds kind of useful.

Iím going to be switching Bartz around all three of my melee classes throughout the game in order to get him to learn Dual Wield and !Spell Blade.

Lenna is a White Mage because sheís the best at it.

See, the one mathematical thing about FFV I (think I) know is that unlike other games with classes, your charactersí base stat growth is not affected by what job theyíre in. Rather, each level has a corresponding stat list for each job.

In other words, even if I decided to train Bartz as a White Mage until level 40, I can job change him to Dragoon and heíll have the same stats as if he had been a Dragoon the entire time.

Getting back to Lenna, as she has the highest Magic stat sheís basically the mage of the group. Iíll probably keep her in this job for the entire game, though I might switch her to Mystic Knight for the hell of it.

Galuf is a Mystic Knight because why not. He can use Spell Blade, which enchants his basic attack with an element and basically turns him into a specialized Black Mage. Itís pretty nifty. His other ability is Magic Shell, which at low health has him auto-cast Shell on himself. Not very useful.

I might switch Galuf to Ninja if things don't go too well with Mystic Knight.

No, I donít know why it looks like she isnít wearing pants.

Faris (a pirate) is a Ninja because irony. To be honest, I normally have her as a Dragoon, but I already have Bartz as that.

As a Ninja, Faris has the most varied list of ! Commands: !Smoke (instant run), !Image (essentially gives you two guaranteed evades from physical attacks), and !Throw (guess). She also learns First Strike, which increases the chance of Preemptive Strikes, and Dual Wield, whose name explains itself.

Faris is essentially going to my third (or in this case, fourth) wheel. Bartz is going to be whacking things to death, Lenna is going to be keeping everyone alive, and Galuf is going to essentially stand in for a Black Mage. Meanwhile, Faris is just kind of there. Or at least that's what usually happens when I play this game.

EDIT: So looking back, it turns out I was wrong about pretty much everything in this post regarding what each character would do.

I had Faris be a Dragoon for a while then switched her to a magic user. Having Lance to easily refill her MP let me fire off spells constantly with little worry.

There are many stories about how noble, upstanding Heroes of Light saved the world from ruin, right? Well, I'm here to tell you about the time the world was saved by criminals, morons, perverts, and liberal arts majors. Yes, that's right, it's Final Fantasy V: the Something Awful LP version. I've colored all the windows red so they'll go faster.

Let's meet our cast. Treasure hunter and trail-worn traveler, searching the world over for relics of the past, it's....

Locke is a Thief, which means he gets super-high speed and the ability to steal items from enemies. He can hold the B button in towns and dungeons to dash, an effect that stacks with the GBA port's auto-dash ability, allowing you to cruise around at an unmanageable four times the speed of default walking. Additionally, there are secret passages throughout the world. Anyone can pass through them, but only if they know they're there, and only a thief can see them.

A naive royal heir of unremarkable combat prowess, who can only be described as "spoony," it's....

As a Bard, Lenna believes in the power of music rather than the power of violence. She can equip harps, weak long-range weapons that have a high chance of causing a status effect on enemies. Unfortunately, the basic harp does not possess such abilities; it just sucks. Bards also learn versatile song magic from various sources around the world, but Lenna doesn't know any of them. She's on potion duty until further notice.

A spry old amnesiac who has forgotten everything, including society's standards of decency, it's...

Galuf is a Dancer, which means that

...Anyway, as a dancer, Galuf knows how to cut a rug effectively in battle. Dancing in a battle will deploy at random one of four special attacks. The most powerful is the Sword Dance, an attack that deals about four times normal damage. The Jitterbug steals HP from the target and the user recovers. The Mystery Waltz functions similarly, except it steals MP. And the Tempting Tango makes me want to start vomiting and never stop. It also confuses one enemy. Dancers can equip several exclusive pieces of equipment, including Final Fantasy's ultimate headgear, the Ribbon.

Finally, a gruff outlaw who commands the fear and respect of bloodthirsty pirates and was raised by and among wild animals, it's...

Faris is a berserker, which means, in addition to wearing the skins of animals that she killed with her bare hands, she has extremely high attack and HP and exclusive access to the very powerful weapons in the axe and hammer categories. Berserkers come with a harsh trade-off, however, because you cannot control them at all. In battle, they enter a blood frenzy comparable to the Berserk status effect, in which they simply attack until all their enemies lie slain.

This improbable group consists of the jobs that my fellow travelers have deemed the weakest and most useless. Well, I'll show them. I'll show them all.

!Lance does not require you equip a Spear in order to use it; it takes any weapon you can equip, so far as I know.

This thread is the fucking man.

Is color-coded menu screens going to be a thing? One color per party? Or is Buffalo Bob just that smart?

The color change was all me, but everybody should do it now because of how great an idea it is.

Red is a dangerous color, though. I was going so fast that I accidentally posted more content than I was supposed to have. I'll remove it now and post it again later.
