Default Now You're Listing with Power! - Top 50 NES Games

Hey you stupid kids what with your Call of Minecrafts and Five Nights at Skylanders, do you even know what a video game is? No! Of course not! If you had the good sense to be born in the 80s you would know a video game is a flat gray box what that you did blow on.

This thread is a celebration of our, The Talking Time's, favorites.

You see from 1985 to 1994 Nintendo (the people who make Pokken Tournament, child) manufactured the Nintendo Entertainment System (or "Nest" as we called it). Despite running off the power generated by our homestead's waterwheels it had a rich library of games that ran from the Godly to a third consecutive slap in the face.

But which is which?! That's for YOU to decide. PM me your list of 25 fave Nest Games by 00:00:00 ET September 17th. We're playing by Octo rules, which means you're number one choice gets 25 points, second gets 24, and so on. Come the deadline I'll brew a pot of coffee and combine the lists to find our collective favorite 50! What a treat!

Some ground rules: A NES game is an autonomous machine capable of both thought and movement. NOT Hal-9000, NOT GLaDOS, and especially NOT Frankenstein!

Because the 713 official NES games is far too small a pool to cull a great list from, I'm opening submissions to include Famicom games, bootlegs, hacks, mods, ports, or any odd thing that might conceivably run on a NES. Want to nominate that FFVII demake? Go for it! Fan of Sonic & Knuckles 5? Bob's your uncle! Your Fire Emblems, Rockman 4 Minus Infinities, and Super Monkey Daiboukens are all on the table. So have fun!

"But wait," you might ask me, "my name is Karzac and I've never played a NES game. Should I sit this one you?" No! You've got two weeks to educate yourself. Plenty of time to fire up the ol' Nestticle and pop some roms. Self enrichment through video games, that's what this is.

To get the ball rolling, here's my list of people who jumped the gun and submitted early:

The real monster is the madman who created a corpse-em-up. Frankenstein is his monster.

Ha! I've played a few NES games, mostly through Animal Crossing, actually. Maybe I'll just submit "Mega Man 2" and be done with it.

Hey, every vote counts. That's Mega Man 2 getting one more point than it otherwise would have.

It would get 25 more points. Incomplete lists still get full points, as per Octo's radical decree.

Its pronounced "Een Eee Ess". Period.

"NEST" not a robot game system
"NEZ" not a robot game system
"SNEZ" not a robot game system

Its an acronym not a word, people. you don't say "USA" as a word. you say "You Ess Aay"

Do you call a "DS" a "dis" or "Dee Ess". If you say the first, you are strange.

If I pick the best NES game by time played, I'd be picking battleship.

I have a lot of my childhood wrapped up in NES games, so my list had to include games I owned or borrowed, and order them in the amount of time invested into them.

So, apologies in advance for 5-8 year old me and my poor choices.

Oops, whipped up a quick list before DragonCon after all. Likewise, it's mostly what I played as a kid, though I hit most of the usual high points at the time.

Technically, if you don't pronounce it as a word, it's an initialism, not an acronym.

for most of my life, I actually just called it "Nintendo". Nowadays it sounds like something your mom might call your XBox because she doesn't understand, but when Nintendo only made the one system, it worked just fine. Then the Super Nintendo came around, and I called it that. It wasn't until the Nintendo 64 came around that I started abbreviating stuff. I think it may just have been that I didn't even realized "Entertainment System" had been part of the name before that point.

To be fair, you did cherry pick your examples. There are hundreds of cases of taking the first letter of each of a set of words, putting them together and pronouncing them like their own word. Laser, taser, scuba, radar, NORAD, NATO, NAFTA, FUBAR, lol, SNAFU...

Don't see why "NES" should necessarily be any different.

No, it's called a "Nest" because putting games in was like birds returning eggs that had rolled out.

It's not that hard people.

"Lol" as a word is common. That's where you get the alternate "lawl" from.
