Default A Popularity Contest approaches! Command? Vote for the Top 50 JRPGs!

Oh, hello there.

Your timing couldn’t be better. Why’s that? Well, you see, it’s time for another popularity contest, here on the ol’ Talking Time internet message forum. Won’t you embark with us on this voyage of discovery? It’ll begin in a sewer, where, together, we’ll bash little critters until they vanish, leaving behind cash money and possibly things we can eat. Then, over the course of 40-60 hours days, we’ll sleep together in tents, bring each other back from the dead several times, and finally, confront God Itself, and sort of hover in the sky, whacking God until all of its HPs are gone. All the while, one of us will remain conspicuously silent, replying with "..." and nothing more.

What’s this actually about? This time around, we’ll be deciding, once and for all, what are the Top 50 Best-Ever Japanese Role-Playing Gamesofts. Some people here at Talking Time enjoy video games, and some people here used to enjoy video games. Several of those people might theoretically agree that JRPGs are the best kind of video game (or once were, back when video games were still good). So let’s count ‘em down!

~~~On a personal note... I started playing video games when I was maybe four or five. Mostly Mario, or sports games, or whatever my dad or friends had laying around. I got a Game Boy when I was 10, and that was pretty cool, but video games never really had my full attention until I learned of JRPGs. From then on, I was hooked. ...Until the end of high school. Throughout most of university, I ignored video games almost completely. Then one day, a friend introduced me to some PS2 era JRPGs, and once again, I saw The Light. From then on, I've fallen deeper and deeper in love with the genre. I'm fascinated to this day by its many permutations, and labyrinthine history. JRPGs hold a very special place in my heart, and I'd love to have a big, wide-ranging discussion with anyone who feels the same, and that's why I proposed that we do this list. There's so much fun territory to cover with JRPGs, so let's dig in.~~~
What are the rules? Send me, Double “Jayson” Dracula, a PM (private message) containing your list of the best JRPGs. Your list may contain as many as 25 entries. Your list must be ranked in numerical order of preference. Your highest-ranked game will be awarded 25 points, while your second-highest will be awarded 24, and so on, regardless of the number of games on your list. All points from all entries will be tabulated to determine the Top 50 Best-Ever Japanese Role-Playing Gamesofts.
What counts as a JRPG? That is the subject of some debate. Here are the rules for this particular list:
1) No Zeldas allowed. Zeldas are wonderful, but they Ain’t No JRPGs.
2) The games you vote for need not be produced in Glorious Nippon (but come on, search within your heart… you know they should be).
3) If the game you feel like voting for could better be described, for example, as a Tactical or Strategy RPG, then you better have a dang good reason for sticking it on your darn list.
4) Games that are part of a larger series will, under all circumstances, be counted as separate entities. This includes yer Xenosagas and the like. You don’t see people lumping all the Godfather films or all the Star Wars films together on lists now do you. NOTE: Games that were released in multiple "versions" are the exception. For example, Pokemon Red/Blue would be counted as one game, whereas Pokemon Red and Pokemon Sapphire would be counted as different games.
When can I vote? Votes will be accepted until May 13 at 8:22 AM, Japan Standard Time.
I really wish Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon was a valid choice. Putting my list together, in any case! I've got a bunch of oddball entries. Everyone needs to put Hoshi wo Miru Hito as their #25 together we can make the dream come true
What about RPGs that have multiple versions that have major differences but are still kind of the same game?
What I'm saying is is there a chance Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar: Silver Star Harmony all end up on this list together (And Lunar Legend I suppose but whose voting for that)?
Oh my god Sandoval GET OUT OF MY WEB BROWSER.
I was literally just now Wikipedia-ing the Lunar series because who can make heads of tales of that nonsense.
If you are voting (or have voted) for any Lunars, please be super clear about which ones you mean!
I sent my list. It's pretty bad but at least there's nothing that starts with an X on it. I didn't realize before sitting down how many of my go-to JRPGs are actually action-adventures. Sorry, Secret of Evermore, you will be missed. *pours one out*
SoE has enough RPG trappings I'd say it counts. I don't know about DD though. I only put one action RPG on my list so I guess I'll see what he says.
I don't think I'm going to reveal my list so I can be spared the pitchforks and torches. It's not just what's on the list but also the order of them. I'll go stand in the corner now.
For me it ultimately comes down to if there's a step in between me pressing a button and the person swinging a sword (or whatever). Evermore is a press'n'swing so it's out.
For me is if there's number crunching involved, and damage is calculated via those numbers. Link to the Past is out, Secret of Mana is in.
Mmmm.... but then Symphony of the Night is in, too. Clearly a narrower filter is needed.
I was somewhat strict but only because it made cutting down the last few entries a lot easier.
This is the definition I use. Zelda 2 is a JRPG, but no other games in the series are. Super Metroid clearly is not, but SotN is in.
Also, for entire series, I would count it if the games in the series are too closely related to one another. Though the only example I can think of (.hack) is also not something I could envision actually getting ranked in, so it's a moot point.
Well...the only thing specifically blocked is Zelda.
If a strategy or tactical role-playing game contains enough anime, then I think it belongs on this list. Or at the very least, it's going on my list. Assuming it's good.
The real question is, do Souls games count as RPGs?
I played up through the first boss then got mad when I didn't get a boss weapon.
I probably shouldn't have been so close minded. Seems like a game I'd be into these days.
SotN is a platforming action game with RPG elements, whereas SoM is an RPG with action elements.
Now, you might argue that really the only big difference here is the camera perspective. You wouldn't really be wrong but here we are anyway. Categories are weird.
I preordered it and bought it day one at EB. It's still shrink-wrapped in a box upstairs.
I am so glad this has already became a "What is a JRPG?" thread. I think every list should be required to have an entry that begs that question.
