Default Blast [Processing] To The Past - Talking Time's Top 50 16-Bit Games

You've voted, Talking Time, and I've tallied. It's time to find out what are the games from the 16-bit era that are held in the highest regard by our fellow tyrants.

239 different games, nominated by thirty different tyrants, entered the ring. But after the votes had been counted and heads rolled, only fifty were left standing.

Spoiler! The cut-off point were 53 points. But some popular choices didn't make it because while many tyrants liked them they gave them too few points. So lets start with a minute of silence for those that almost made it:

Popular Vote Awards

These are the games that had four or more mentions but didn't make the list.

King of Fighters '98 (52 points, 4 mentions)

To this day I'm not sure if the number in the title refers to the year it was released or the number of playable characters. At 52 points, this ended in the #51 spot.

Mario Paint (49 points, 6 mentions)

Had it been released today, this title would have launched a thousand "What is game?" threads. We dodged a bullet there, Talking Time!

Sunset Riders (49 points, 5 mentions)

This game has a man with a pink sombrero and a pink poncho. I should feel offended for the stereotype but it did look cool.

NBA Jam: Tournament Edition (47 points, 4 mentions)

Two-on-two arcade-style basketball would never be as good as this.

Wild Guns (47 points, 4 mentions)

Hey, another western! This one had two playable characters and cool steampunk enemies. It was also too difficult for young Positronic because it required to aim a crosshair while avoiding enemy bullets.

Contra III: The Alien Wars (43 points, 5 mentions)

Yes, I'm as shocked as you are. There's a sequence where your characters jump from missile to missile to shoot down an alien ship. WTF, Talking Time?

Seiken Densetsu 3 (39 points, 4 mentions)

Maybe this would have ranked higher if it would have seen a US release.

U.N. Squadron (30 points, 4 mentions)

One of the SNES shoot'em-up launch titles. This is the one that didn't feature an almost crippling slow-down. Game historians still don't agree if this was a good or a bad thing.

Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts (29 points, 4 mentions)

The Dark Souls of videogames before there was a Dark Souls, if Dark Souls was a side-scroller with a punishing difficulty level. There are people who say have finished this game without cheating and I'm sure they are all lying.

E.V.O. Search for Eden (21 points, 4 mentions)

This game had some very innovative mechanics for its time, but apparently innovation didn't help it climb too high into any tyrant's list. Natural selection in action!

Man, if I got my list in in time Wild Guns and Contra both would have placed.

I'm ashamed of my past-self!

That said, I'm adding a honorable mention. There's a game that nobody voted for. Not even me, because I didn't submit a list. And I'm frankly so amazed that this happened that I'm correcting that injustice right now.

Why this game and none of the honorable mentions? Because this is my list and 16-year-old Positronic woud never forgive me if I didn't take this opportunity.

-99999. Breath of Fire II
Released for SNES on December 1994 (US)

Score: 0 points
Rated the highest by:
Genre: RPG
90s factor: Redesigned cover art for the US market
Dragons: are cool.

"Breath of Fire 2 exceeds it's predecessors in every way[...] I sort of wish that you could try different attacks. [...] Overall, Breath of Fire 2 is a good RPG." - EGM

Unlike its predecessor, this Capcom developed RPG was published in the USA by Capcom itself, once Square proved that you could release a new RPG in the old Americas and (presumably) turn a profit.

The story was the usual Mysterious Teen with Amnesia and a Mysterious Past learning about his Heritage. But while it failed to set the world on fire (heh!) it was a fun, solid RPG marred RPG with fun mechanics like custom character fusion and the possibility to build your own village. Also, it had a humanoid bulldog with a bow as a playable character. That's a winner right there! It almost makes up for the huge length inflated by the required grinding.

I remember buying this game using borrowed money from my brother. I never paid him back. But it's OK because I lent this to my cousin a few months later and never got the game back. If my brother wants his money back he can ask my cousin!

Positronic score:

Gameplay

Fun factor

Game length

BoF2 is fine but it's the worst Bof and also there's a bunch of good RPGs on the 16-bits.

Actually, BoF2 didn't beat Contra III

But wait until you see some of the titles that *did* beat Contra III. #spoilers

Contra 3 is a game I know is good from reputation, but I didn't play it until a couple of months ago, so it didn't make my list. I just assumed people with actual find memories of it would get it on the list. Most of the others are good honorable mentions.

I had both Secret of Evermore and Mario Paint near the middle of my list. Solid products that stood out from those around them, both.

Seiken Densetsu 3, on the other hand, was my #6 and is close to masterpiece territory. I suppose I can forgive people for not having played it since it's still never gotten a real English release. But hell, I made it through on katakana and half a dozen element kanji.

E.V.O. would've probably been on my list, except it's mysteriously missing from my played-games document so I forgot about it. It probably would've been near the bottom though, so it still wouldn't have placed - really cool premise hampered by sub-par 2D action gameplay.

Man if I'd just put Evermore a couple of spots higher. Aside from having to grind to buy ingredients it's superior to Secret of Mana in every way.

Wait, you had to grind magic in Mana, too. So no aside from needed.

That such games didn't make the cut just goes to show how many great 16-bit games there are.

I am, of course, mad that Secret of Mana is presumably on the list but not SD3.

Contra and Mario Paint were on my list. I didn't have a Super Nintendo until well into the mid-90's, so most of my gaming experiences came from a friend who did. I remember he had both a big house and a big household made up of two previously divorced parents, Brady Bunch-style. Anyhoo, we spend a lot of time messing with Mario Paint, making cartoons were Yoshi was stabbed in the nose and then decapitated. Blood everywhere. Lots of fun.

NBA Jam and Super Ghouls n Ghosts was on my list, too. I'm not really a sports fan, but NBA Jam was a ton of fun.

Oh, and Sunset Riders was also on my list.

"Bury me with my money!"

mario paint was #10 on my list. That fly swatter game man... I also voted for mario paint based on the things people have done with the music maker part of it.

Secret of Evermore was my #16. Superior to Mana in any way that mattered to me.

Wild Guns was my #18. I really liked the shooting gallery type feel of it with the characters in the foreground and being able to dodge bullets. The game looks really nice. It is really hard though that can be said about a lot of old games.

UN Squadron was my #25. You can play as a guy that looks kinda like mario. I'm not good at shmups, but for some reason I like UN Squadron.

I also didn't have a SNES at the time, so most of my experience with these games is after the initial releases or from playing at friends' houses.

It's interesting (but accurate) that game as long as BoF2 gets a frown for it. BoF1 was at the leading edge of the overly long JRPGs of the 32 bit era. Where longer became 'better.'

I've only played the GBA version of BoF2, but I found it solidly better than the first game.

Most of the honorable mentions were on my long list, but somehow I missed ( and then missed again when I commented earlier) Sunset Riders. I love that game and had I not forgotten it it would have made my list, likely high enough to put it in the top 50.

I think it takes some interesting steps forward but also some disappointing steps back. Of course, maybe I'm just mad that it started the trend of the fishing component becoming more of a pain in the butt with each game.

And you could use that fusion system to turn the bulldog-man into what is more or less a fantasy version of War Machine.

Also, I can't believe I forgot to post my standard BoF musing here:

You know, I'm still a bit in shock about Contra III so I rerun the numbers and, yup, it doesn't make the list, despite RT-55J's efforts.

Just for kicks, I re-calculated the same votes using the new proposed algorithm (11 pts for #25, 35 pts for #1) and it still wouldn't have made it. Talking Time has spoken and has rejected Contra III. I expected better of you!

Sunset Riders loses points because of the subpar Genesis port that came out years before the more arcade accurate SNES port, which came out closer to the end of the system's lifecycle.

So got burned on the Genesis port.
