I just saw that this (http://www.magcloud.com/browse/Issue/157261) exists! Looks very nice, Mr. Barnholt. I think I shall be expanding my collection of on-demand gaming periodicals very soon.

It looks very promising and I am looking forward to receiving my copy.

However, in a weird and kind of unhappy coincidence, we started planning the Super NES issue of GSQ about three hours before he posted that. Now he's gonna hate me even more :(

Does it come with a Ray Barnholt pin-up centerfold? He's just so dreamy.

Purchased.

I sure wish there were more affordable retro-ish mags available. I'm too poor to drop like 100 bucks on a RetroGamer subscription... :(

But luckily I have GSQ, which I can sometimes drop a lot of cash on, and now Scroll, which is pretty danged cheap! YAY

I've been posting some of my old fanzines (http://www.lakupo.com/grblitz/issue01%20compact.pdf) online too!

Anyone...?

Well I ordered a copy. I'm very interested to see where this thing goes. After all, it's the kind of games writing I dig.

Got my copy in the mail yesterday. So far, I am really digging the topics covered, and the writing of Ray who is not being held back by THE MAN. The magazine has reminded me that I need to head out in search of that new Pac-Man cabinet.

Where can I send letters to the editor?

ASandoval

The back of the magazine has it listed as ray@scroll.vg

I haven't been able to read my copy yet because of class and meetings. I probably won't get a good chance to go through it until tomorrow. I will say that it's a rather classy looking magazine though, just based on flipping through the pages.

Any chance that some of these will find their way to PAX East? I'd love to grab one while I'm down there.

I finished reading this today and it was awesome all around. I'm bummed that the postman bent the fuck out it because the paper has a nice weight to it and those creases aren't going anywhere :(

I'm torn. I feel like this is the sort of thing one holds, physically, but I really haven't even read a magazine in the last 4 years. Everything has been digital. I guess I should just buy the pdf, eh?

I wondered about this. I was glad to see that magcloud's shipping was reasonable ($2). Mine arrived unscathed, which I was 100% shocked at after seeing that it just came in a bag like most other magazines these days.

I finished reading it too. I enjoyed everything and like the overhaul magazine philosophy. Nice job, Ray.

The latest issue came in the mail over the weekend, and I've parsed through it a bit. It's really good! The main feature is Dragon Quest, which is what everyone is writing about these days. Not everyone else has tagged some great artists to draw up artwork for each DQ game.

Seriously, check out a couple (http://bit.ly/mPb0vp) of the illustrations (http://www.flickr.com/photos/trickyrey/5734141212/). They look even better when blown up to the large magazine size.

I'm very impressed with the quality of the ink and paper, especially compared to some of the Blurb misalignments in some of my GSQ's. It definitely is pricy, but you get what you pay for.

Ironically MC went and misaligned the cover bleeds! Wahey! (Which I have since fixed, but on the bright side many people have the limited edition "God Dammit" variant)

Huh, I didn't notice any color bleeding, but maybe it was because I thought that's how a CRT looks when photographed?? Dunno, but the insides looked nice.

Not color bleed, print bleed. Uh you know what, you're happy with it, let's pretend I said nothing

The only real issue I've noticed with vol 2 for me is that the Game Center CX article is near impossible to read. I don't know if its a problem with fonts, the background or something with the printing, though.

Parish
05-31-2011, 05:38 PM
Yeah, the print bleed on the inside back cover is the only noticeable instance of it in my copy. I think the up-close photo of a CRT that comprises the exterior cover goes a long way toward masking any imperfections in the printing process.

Also, this issue had some really nice layouts! They really reinforced my realization that the layouts I tried to compose in the latest GSQ were completely unsuited for black-and-white and that I need to keep B&W book layouts super-clean.

This, I have no idea. Unless you want to snap a picture or something, I can only assume you got a bum print. I have a stack that all look fine to me, and no one else has brought it up. Either way, sorry.

Anyone else pick up the new issue (http://scroll.vg/blog/scroll-03-the-cute-issue.html) yet? Mine is en route as we speak.

Balrog
09-09-2011, 11:45 AM
Mine is en route as well. I think I'm going to start getting just the digital copy because the post office seems hell bent (no pun intended) on bending every issue in half.

I perused the digital copy the other night and the layout and everything is head and shoulders above anything else. The Cute Masterclass section was a great read because a) I love those games and b) no one else is really covering them from that perspective. I'm a little bummed that the upcoming game/music releases wasn't in this issue like it was in the first one.

Good issue, though I found the code stuff a bit dry for my tastes. YMMV.

Psyael
07-03-2012, 02:43 PM
The code story made me realize how much of the secret codes existed for developers who were creating a game that was too tough for them to beat. I'm glad the bizarro Sonic CD stuff was included, though.

Obviously, that so much development was shifted to PC has changed things, but I think probably Hot Coffee killed the weird secret bonus for good. It proved you aren't even allowed to have strings of code commented out that the public shouldn't have found.

Kirin
07-04-2012, 11:16 AM
I don't see why the Hot Coffee incident would be that big a deal in this case, as long as the secrets don't involve anything that could possibly affect the game's rating. It's not like Big Head Mode is going to put the ESRB in a tizzy.

New issue can be purchased here (http://www.magcloud.com/browse/issue/524281). The topic appears to be Artdink, who I know absolutely nothing about. I really enjoyed Ray's treatment of Jaleco in the last issue, so this one should be aces too.

Plus, if you're buying a physical copy (which you should be), Magcloud is holding a St. Pattie's Day sale, and my copy was $7 off. SCROLL for $10 is a steal, so buy now.

aw man Artdink.

nowadays I believe they have been reduced to working on various licensed whatnot but in the PSX years they did some deeply weird stuff. No One Can Stop Mr. Domino was probably their biggest stateside hit. They also befuddled the shit out of reviewers and the few people who bought the game with Tail of the Sun.

I recall loving the concept of (and not much else about) Buchigire Kongou, an early PS2 3D fighting game about construction equipment.

Excitemike

Not as innovative or creative as their previous fare, sure, but making a good gundam game is no small feat.

j00ey
03-15-2013, 11:12 PM
I explain this briefly, but Studio Artdink is a separate entity that shares the name and that's about it. Everything we know "Good Artdink" for is still actually under that brand. Made it easy for me to skip all that anime stuff, too!

The Raider Dr. Jones
