View Full Version : SilentSnake's Writing Thread of Freelance Whimsy

02-09-2011, 12:56 PM
So I've been making a go of this whole freelance writing thing and have gotten a couple of pieces in the last two GamePro magazines. (Fable III and Epic Mickey) Well, I'm starting to have things posted online, too, so I figured I'd share them here.

A thing I wrote was recently posted. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/218156/9-awesome-diy-game-creation-tools/)

Mostly I wanted to share this one because it was initially inspired by Talking Time. I pitched an article about Super Mario Bros. X and ended up with this feature for 9 game creation things. Also, thanks to Balrog for the Advance Wars one. I never would have known about that if he didn't drag us along for the ride.

Anyways, figure I'd put my published stuff here to talk about or whatever.

Needs moar ZZT.

I mean, sweet article, dude. Also, I had an overwhelming urge to smack the guy doing the RPGMaker promo.

02-22-2011, 12:51 PM
Something a little more Talking Time's speed. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/218272/the-14-best-unreleased-jrpgs/)

(Warning: Possibly depressing.)

02-23-2011, 09:10 AM
Possibly? That article probably touches on 90% of Talking Time's total quota of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Argh.

03-17-2011, 05:33 PM
Another feature, this time on "dead" franchises. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/218547/graveyard-of-genre-giants/)

04-09-2011, 05:50 PM
I wrote a thing about Resident Evil. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/218791/wtfs-up-with-you-guys-and-resident-evil/)

I wrote a thing about Resident Evil. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/218791/wtfs-up-with-you-guys-and-resident-evil/)

Good read. Glad to know I'm not the only one who made the connection between old RE and Point and click PC games.

04-29-2011, 06:03 PM
I reviewed a dumb-but-sorta-fun iPhone game (http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/219119/review-celebrity-bodyguard-ios/) and went on a sidequest (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/219129/roleplayers-realm-sidequest-have-rpgs-become-too-simple/).

04-30-2011, 11:11 AM
That Sidequest was really fun to read even though I've only played two of the games you talk about. There were a few dropped words I think, but otherwise it was a great format. It reminds me I want to try out Alpha Protocol sometime too.

05-07-2011, 07:29 AM
So the new issue of GamePro is out, and I have a piece in it on the writing in Valve games. I really like how it turned out, so if you spot the mag on the news stand or whatever, pick it up and read it. (No link, sadly. It's print only.)

05-18-2011, 03:43 PM
I reviewed Spiral Knights. The verdict lies within! (With cameo appearances by several Talking Tyrants.) (http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/219471/review-spiral-knights-pc/)

05-23-2011, 12:17 PM
I did a huge Dragon Quest retrospective for GamePro that's going to be spread out over the next week.

First: The 8-Bit Era (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/219546/history-of-dragon-quest-the-8-bit-era/)

05-24-2011, 09:17 AM
Day 2 of Dragon Quest Week means an article on the 16-bit era. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/219572/history-of-dragon-quest-the-16-bit-era/)

Also, I reviewed another Free-To-Play MMO, Mythos. It was meh. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/reviews/219569/review-mythos-pc/)

Y-you brazen hussy!

Y-you brazen hussy!

I think it's safe to say you've been...

Er, anyways, next up is the Sony era! Please to enjoy! (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/219599/history-of-dragon-quest-the-playstation-era/)

05-25-2011, 08:59 AM
I wouldn't say that at all, actually. I just didn't realize you were such a writing whore.

I'm a freelance writer. Of course I'm a writing whore.

Anyways, Dragon Quest: Today and Tomorrow! (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/219682/history-of-dragon-quest-return-to-nintendo/)

05-29-2011, 06:32 PM
A little late, but I wrap up GamePro's week of Dragon Quest with the spinoffs. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/219759/history-of-dragon-quest-the-spinoffs/)

Also, I did a piece for 1up's Dragon Quest celebration about Dragon Quest clones. (http://www.1up.com/features/rpgs-inspired-by-dragon-quest)

Finally have another feature out! This one is on cult games. (http://www.gamepro.com/article/features/220585/underdog-games-of-the-last-two-centuries/)

Nice article, brah. Koudelka is the only one on that list I haven't spent any time with, I guess it's worth tracking down??

06-21-2011, 07:59 PM
I'm doing this Atomix thing... (http://www.gamespite.net/talkingtime/showthread.php?t=11966)

06-29-2012, 01:04 PM
I wrote a thing on Zuntata. (http://www.1up.com/features/zuntata-future-proofing-game-music)

06-30-2012, 12:54 AM
Hey Snake, are any of your articles mirrored anywhere else since Gamepro is defunct now?

01-13-2014, 10:49 AM
I've been having articles published here and there for a while now, but I feeling like doing something more regular now. I heard about this site called Patreon (http://www.patreon.com/) which is like Kickstarter for media like writing, comics, music, etc. I was thinking of using it as a springboard for both more freedom in what I write about and a way to directly supplement my income. (Freelancing is not the gold mine you think it is, folks!)

So! Would anyone throw a couple of bucks per article at me if I were to do this? And if so, what kinds of things would you like to see? (Probably safe to limit it to games given my specialization.)

04-01-2014, 11:43 AM
A feature I did on digital card game SolForge featuring a couple of former and current Magic: The Gathering pros. (http://www.usgamer.net/articles/how-solforge-will-set-the-video-card-game-world-alight)

07-01-2014, 08:02 AM
I'm doing mobile reviews for Gamezebo now! First one is DUNGEONy, a shallow excuse for a roguelike that's still pretty fun. (http://www.gamezebo.com/2014/07/01/dungeony-review-shallow-end-still-pretty-fun/)

My first review for GameSpot is on Duels of the Planeswalkers 2015. (http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/magic-the-gathering-duels-of-the-planeswalkers-201/1900-6415832/)

Hey all, just wanted to pop in and plug my Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/user?u=209357), where I'll be chronicling all the games that I've completed. I know it's not going to be a huge source of income, but things have been slim lately, and I haven't made any traction towards anything big since USgamer. So, Patreon! I would really appreciate any patronage you can give, even if it's just $1/mo. Thanks!

02-28-2018, 10:56 AM
I made my first post for my Patreon public to drum up interest. It's about Celeste and how I play games (https://www.patreon.com/posts/17173041).

03-07-2018, 10:53 PM
A piece I did about Nier: Automata's soundtrack for First Person Scholar. (http://www.firstpersonscholar.com/weight-of-the-world/)

03-08-2018, 12:54 PM
Thanks, I enjoyed both of those!

03-08-2018, 01:07 PM
I dig these a lot, Jeremy. RE: Celeste, I think it would be fascinating to compare Celeste's plot with The End is Nigh's - they both have similar mechanics and joys but are diametrically opposed on the topic of "pointlessness." Celeste suggests you make meaning by doing - The End is Nigh suggests "here's another game you love, dummy."

03-08-2018, 05:33 PM
Thanks for the kind words!

New Patreon post up for public consumption, this time on Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and the excess of the JRPG. (https://www.patreon.com/posts/17303223)

I do a weekly tabletop games column for Unwinnable. My latest entry is one that breaks down the Magic card Fact or Fiction. (https://unwinnable.com/2018/03/08/choices/)

Two links today. The first is an exploration of the permadeath mechanics in Into the Breach. (https://www.pcgamesn.com/into-the-breach/into-the-breach-permadeath)

Second, an examination of the achievementification of Civ in Civilization VI. (https://www.patreon.com/posts/17385032)
