Hey kids, do you like 2D action platformers?

Do you like Contra?

Do you like Contra games Tomm helped conceive and potentially script but then not work on much at all past that?

Do you have an irrational distaste for paying more than $10 on XBLA games?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, you've stepped into the right contest!

The stakes? A copy of totally not a Contra game wink wink nudge, Hard Corps: Uprising (http://www.gameinformer.com/games/hard_corps_uprising/b/ps3/archive/2011/02/08/hard-corps-uprising-review-everything-a-contra-fan-could-ask-for-except-the-name.aspx)

That's right, you can win your very own code, redeemable for a free copy of HC:U!

What's it take to win? It's simple! All you have to do is:
Impress Tomm

Do you have valuable creative skills? Do you like to draw? Do you like to make music? Do you like to write? Do you like to put colorful text on jpgs for humorous effect? Do you like to make "spoiler button" icons for web forums? Whatever you do, do it! if it impresses Tomm the most you'll be the proud owner of one impressive game.

When you've decided on / created your impressive thing, post it here! (It can be literally anything. Want to take on a challenge from the "Say a thing" thread? That's fine too!)

All Entries must be posted by 12:00am PST Wednesday, 2/16/2011(That's the midnight after Tuesday and before Wednesday)

Winnerswill be announced sometime on Wednesday 2/16/2011

PLEASE NOTE: Since the prize is a code, you'd also be able to give it as a gift to a Contra-loving friend if Contra isn't your thing. But by entering and winning you'd have bragging rights over all your TT buddies, so get creative!

This is for the XBLA version only! PSN isn't out yet and is not applicable.

*DETAILS:
1 Entry per person (must be member of Talking Time forum)
Prize: Hard Corps: Uprising XBLA Code
Deadline: 12:00am PST Wednesday Morning 2/16/2011
THIS IS NOT AN OFFICIAL KONAMI DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT CON(tra)TEST
It's Tomm as an individual with codes to give away as deemed OK by Konami

This ain't no Soft Corps Downsizing... it's HARD CORPS: UPRISING!

Hmm... tempting. I don't want to create some sort of weird symmetry though where everyone but me sends in stuff about Metal Slug and then it takes a year for someone to send me my prize.

If I tell you I knew you were going to do this, and that's why I befriended you years ago to the point that you made me your best man, does that count? I think that's pretty impressive, myself.

if "rigging this contest" is your impressive thing, then you would be disqualified. Which would create some kind of time paradox that could threaten the stability of everything we know to be true.

And we have everyone but Calories to blame.

But honestly I like Timing Talk, the forum for how much we love QTEs.

I don't have a 360; I'm just using this thread as an excuse to compose something.

See, what happened was, as soon as I read through this thread -- the seed of an idea planted itself in my mind, grew rapidly, and bore fruit -- and it was practically begging, screaming to be plucked & baked into a pie. Of... figurative sorts.

... so. Here's my entry.

Let's Attack Cautiously (http://tindeck.com/listen/epxj)
Sound Spec: 2a03, 5 channels
Length: 1m 37s (loops at 0m 44s)
Composed with Famitracker
Drum samples made with KORG DS-10
An attempt at decent Dynamic Range Compression made in Audacity

I feel I'm getting quicker at composing stuff like this. Of course, part of that here was that I was able to reuse background patterns to good effect.

I'm open to critique.

Here's something I worked on over the weekend specifically for this. If I wanted to impress I guess I should have done something I knew how to do instead of experimenting, but Contra taught me you gotta have balls.

Are past creations eligible? I made this some time ago, but it's certainly in keeping with the theme:

gaaaah sorry Benji. I just finished telling Alexb the rule was it couldn't be something that had already impressed me in the past.

I should have specified "something I've never seen before" :(

It's impressive though! even if it isn't eligible

This is entirely understandable.

I'd only be in it for the bragging rights anyway as I have no box in which to enter said code.

Oh, what the hell.

A little while ago, after watching a few Mystery Science Theater episodes with a good friend, I realized that Zap Rowsdower (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRTbW98v8ys#t=2m37s) and David Ryder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFHlJ2voJHY), two of the most infamous characters in MST history, should appear in their own action game. She promptly cobbled together the box art for said game:

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n309/coloneltomato/Legendary_Journeys.jpg

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n309/coloneltomato/Contra_cover.jpg

Note: May only be amusing if you're familiar with MST. But Rowsdower and Ryder would give Bill and Lance a run for their money. Also I'm probably disqualified from winning, since she was the one who, you knew, actually drew it, and I only came up with the idea. I just wanted an excuse to post it.

Nodal

I made a thing, but I took some creative license. I hope I win, because I was going to buy this game on my 360 but then a bird came down and pleaded with me for the sake of its children, so I gave it my Xbox Live points. But then I found out it didn't have any children at all.

So here we are everyone--the Con(tra)test is officially OVER! Am I impressed? You'll have to wait until sometime tomorrow (today) to find out... it looks like the entrees are:

1) Donny's Contra Hamstercat.
2) Calorie Mate's time paradox (DISQUALIFIED)
3) Googleshng's recursively Tomm referencing JPG
4) Warg's Konami-styled chiptune
5) JohnB's impressively small entry (DISQUALIFIED)
6) Traumadore's Red Falcon
7) Benjibot's 'code in cross stitch' (DISQUALIFIED)
8) le geek's musical number
9) Willm's concept he didn't draw himself (ONLY PARTIALLY QUALIFIED)
10) Nodal's ironic webcomic
11) Lady's realistic portrayal of this country's finest hero

Whose cuisine will reign supreme?

Stay tuned to find out!

I hope my gutsy choice to ignore the official rules and post a late entry impresses. After all, I can't imagine the Hard Corps guys following something as wimpy as the rules, can you?

Anyway, I gave WATSON, of Jeopardy! fame, the avatar we all secretly know he should have had.

This is a really tough decision to make. The entries are all pretty great. Unfortunately, winners must be chosen.

le geek and Willm face the unfortunate obstacle of referencing things I'm not familiar with (geek I know the song but your link was the first time I'd seen the video, so it lacked that connection in my brain). Willm's entry is really well drawn and they expertly recreated the Contra cover (even the bullets are spaced poorly). However the drawing part isn't the part he did. it does make me interested in learning about these characters though.

Googleshng, on the other hand, directly referenced a decision I'd made on Hard Corps Uprising, crossed with Shattered Memories--and a scene featuring one of my favorite characters in a game I've worked on. It was apt, humorous, and related to me directly. Similarly, Nodal came in strong with an altered fake webcomic that is part of a webcomic he knows I read because my forum avatar is from it. AND the character in my forum avatar is the one who makes said fake web comic... so Nodal had a good chance of being right in my affection for the reference. Nodahl was making it happen.

Donny's entry is really a case of one element taking it from "ordinary" to "exceptional". By itself it's a cat shooting a stick figure with a Contra gun, however, the fact the cat is making gun sounds by saying "mew mew" is inspired. It's a strong contender.

then we have all the things people toiled over to create from nothing specifically for this Con(tra)test (or so I'm told)... Traumadore's is really artistic and cool. I could see it hanging on a wall. Warg made a chiptune--A CHIPTUNE! and he even made it sound like Konami games of old. Now, it doesn't sound exclusively Contra (I can hear some Castlevania in there), but it's pretty catchy and very 573. Lastly, Lady comes in at the wire with a lovingly-rendered realistic Sparkster! He looks just like a real possum! And look at his sharp little teeth, bared with great justice. It's so magical I'll defend Lady's honor when her boyfriend berates her for how Sparkster is holding his sword (honestly Kishi sometimes you have to let it go).

This is not a decision to be taken lightly! I will need to set my Aggregator to "Apples to Apples" and feed it this information...

Tomm Guycot

A WINNER has been chosen!

For his exciting and so cute it loops back around to badass entry, "Catra Force", Donny has won Hard Corps: Uprising for XBLA!

...however, all is not as it seems in the Con(tra)test...

~ PLOT TWIST! ~

I in fact have two codes to give away!

This was not an easy choice. Nodal's entry was amazingly funny to me... but on a few of the Hella Jeffs, Lance's head was missing. However, that could have been done on purpose because it would fit the context and I would have done the same thing, but... And then on the other hand, Traumadore's thing was really cool and he took a risk and tried something new in order to create it. and that's the kind of spirit that should be rewarded...

But while my brain struggled not to collapse under the decision, i was listening to Warg's song on loop.

so Warg also wins Hard Corps: Uprising for XBLA!

Thanks to our winners Donny and Warg, and our runners-up* Traumadore and Nodal! All the entries were great.

Thanks for Playing!

Tomm, you chose well, very well indeed. However, before you give out your prizes, I think you should insist that Donny do a drawing of the Catra receiving a medal from Bill and Lance for his hard work. Only then should he get his code.

Because I really want to see more of Catra.

I really was just using this thread as an opportunity to compose something as fast as I could. I don't have a 360 (my only current-gen system is a DS) -- and I probably won't be able to make use of this code in the near future.

So I gave it to Traumadore! Have fun with it!
