View Full Version : Artistic Sheananigans

What with this shiny still-newish creative forum, I guess I should go ahead and finally make my own thread, huh? Not that I post much (or draw as much as I really should outside of commissions and the like), but eh.

http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/070/2/d/team_d_u_d_e__fortress_2_by_sheana-d3bdrpc.png

Some artistic friends put together a TF2 server. I drew some of my original characters dressed as eerily-accurate classes to go on the rotating loading screen image list.

Thanks for the kind words, you guys! I'm fond of implied motion myself so I'm glad I managed it well enough for others to pick up on.

Also, nominated for Best Thread Title of the Month.

The prize for that should be shared with Zef, because I'm pretty sure it was him that came up with 'Sheananigans' a few months ago in another thread. I'm still amazed that that word combination never occured to me before in my life.

Niiice. Took me a second to work out how their anatomy works both frontwards and backwards, but it does!

The guy on the right has his head upside down, and his body pointed in the same direction as the guy on the left, so if his thumbs are medial in that configuration, the other guy's thumbs should be distal, but I can't really see that they are. also, they both have two little antennae on their humeri, but they're not pointed in the same direction.

Sheana
03-14-2011, 04:04 PM
I know it's not clear in some spots (and I probably should've tacked on some explanation), but they're put together in a way that it doesn't really matter which way they face. Their arms and thumbs are jointed in a particular way (with the thumbs being centrally located below the palm), they can just sort of flip their heads over and they can walk around in all directions. They have high spacial awareness and perceive the world in 360 degrees at all times, and have no concept of "in front of" or "behind".

All my friends have been doing derpy doodles of their Pokťmon teams so I had to make like a lemming and follow. My copy of White ain't here yet so I drew my final team from Pearl that I used to 'win' the game.

I'm still mildly disturbed by the fact that my Palkia is 'Quirky'. Maybe I shoulda named it Q.

That thing on the bottom is a Great Atlantic Octopussy, one of my 'signature' critters and favorite drawing subjects (their offspring are squittens). I'd totally love to do t-shirts or plushies or something with them in the future, so it always does my heart good to see folks likin' them.

Oh man, Rocko. Now that's a reminder I never would've thought of, but I can see what you mean. There are worse comparisons to be made!

Not just drawing, but writing too!

oh hey what's this it looks like an article or something (http://www.examiner.com/cartoons-in-portland/non-disney-necessities-american-pop-1981-review)

I just got approved to do animation-themed articles for this website, so at least once or twice (or sometimes more) a week you'll see little snippets of writing from me! I've been wanting to do something like this for a while now, so I'm feeling right chuffed. Hopefully they're not too horrible and some folks will actually read them.

This is also one of those sites that pays based on pageviews, ad revenue, session length, feed follows and et cetera, so your patronage is greatly appreciated.

I've been looking to make a Patch Together (http://www.patchtogether.com) entry for ages, trying to think of who to make and how and when and why. Well, I finally got around to putting one up!

LOOK LOOK LOOK (http://www.patchtogether.com/designs/dave-4638.html)

I've been wanting to get a Dave toy made for years. He's been one of my nearest and dearest characters since long before Team D.U.D.E. ever came to be, and could possibly even be considered my little general art mascot. I have literally been drawing him since I was like twelve. To get a plush stuffed toy or hell, even a small figurine of him made would be the most fantastic thing ever. Wouldn't hurt that I'd get part of the profit, either!

So vote! You do have to register to vote on PT, but it's quick and simple and any help you could give doing so would be fantabulous! Help a dude out and get a Dave toy made, vote and spread the word around! Wooo!

Hey Sheana? Sheana? I've always admired the qulaity of your lines and cleanness of you inks. Do you ink by hand, digitially? If so, what do you use.

And did you go to art school or did you learn on your own? Sorry to pry but your work is always like super good all the time.

Sheana
09-03-2011, 04:44 PM
No worries man, I'm flattered you're even asking!

I ink digitally. I used to ink by hand back in the day, but my hands are really unsteady, so my traditional inking was really gross and full of errors and required me spending ages making it presentable in Photoshop. Then I worked entirely in Photoshop for a while, and spent a lot of time tweaking things with resizing and sharpening and whatnot.

I currently do the bulk of my artwork in PaintTool Sai! The digital brush in SAI is one I've wanted for years, a nice middle option between Photoshop and Flash. It's nice and smooth and crisp with great line quality! The coloring options ain't so bad neither. Though, in a bit I'm gonna be checking out Manga Studio as well, seeing if I can use that program decently when it comes to actual comic-making time.

Savannah College of Art & Design graduate here! Majored in Interactive Design & Game Development, minored in Animation (2D focus). This is probably why I'm completely unemployable and swimming in student loan debt!

Yeah, I like that they all have very distinct shapes and features. The men's hair might want for a bit of variety, but if it's like a period piece and set in a timeframe with a certain fashion, I can see it working. Color might help here as well.

Yep.

Longer answer: my webcomic is gonna be set in a Victorian-era-type world, and they were all about the sideburns back then. My period reference image folder is gettin' huuuuge. Different angles and different colors and having these few guys in the midst of other characters will probably help, too.

Yeah, I figured as much with the setting and things we've seen so far. And yeah, being in context and colored will help. Another unsolicited suggestion to keep in mind for the future, you might look into different natural hairtypes too - curly hair, wavy, straight, etc. to distinguish further.

Oh trust me, there's plenty of those about! Two of the things I love drawing most on a character and using for uniqueness purposes: noses, and hair. The characters I chose for this just happen to have a certain type for the most part, and some of the uniqueness is lost in profile (and in being b&w).

Tiny nitpick: I'm not entirely sure the fourth panel where we switch to seeing blondie's back works. I get that it's supposed to be mostly a camera move, and appreciate the attempt to inject variety into a "side-by-side characters talking" scene, but it ends up looking a bit like they're doing a little jig, facing forward / towards your partner / back to forward...

Is that a Man-ticore? Love the half-human paws and detail in the tail. You must spend lots of time sketching before you put down those awesome lines.

Not so much Doolittle as an expert handler in a universe with lots of sentient critters!

And yep, manticore! And believe it or not, my sketches are generally very quick and vague. I do most of my actual drawing during the inking stage, which is sloooow.

I've always wanted to draw, so finally I bought some paper and pencils and have been giving it a try. Drawing is hard. Really hard! I can barely make certain basic shapes and lines, how can I ever hope to get good enough to make characters and backgrounds?

1. Visualize what you want to draw, and hold the image in your mind as you draw (this is hard, and takes lots of practice, and some people can draw without doing it but it is important). It can help to imagine yourself making the brush/pencil strokes in your mind as you physically draw them as well.
2. Take it slow. Speed comes after you've been drawing for a long time or you get a lot of practice in, which amounts to the same thing. Accuracy to what you want to draw is the most important thing.
3. Reference reference reference poses, entire items, etc etc. Someone's drawn one of something out there, and it's usually on the internet too.

Like others said, draw from life and practice practice practice. If you want some drawing exercise ideas I can give you some.

Also continue this dialogue in a more general thread...unless you specifically wanted Sheana's advice on how to draw because she is the bestest. I'm guessing you just didn't catch the clever pun buried in the title.

Practice using your eyes, not your brain, to draw things. I think I've said this before, but the brain is lazy. It doesn't care if something looks correct, only that it looks good enough. You have to train your brain to shut up so your eyes can do the work of processing the visual input.

Mightyblue's got the right idea, but you need a solid foundation in shape, line and light before you can get what's in your mind onto the paper in the way you want it. Go out and draw things you see. Every little bit helps. But try not to draw things as the objects they are, but as what you see. It takes a lot of practice.

Some of the things you can try are contour drawing, i.e. drawing an object you see, but not looking at the paper. Your brain wants to "correct" things you draw, so not looking at the paper cuts it off.

There's also gesture drawing, which is when you take only a few seconds or up to a minute to draw a human figure, although it's not intended as a finished piece, just warm-up or practice. The time limit forces you to get the basics of a figure without dwelling on the details.

Good luck!
