View Full Version : There can be ONLY ONE! Play-By-Post EDH!

06-14-2011, 08:03 PM
Hey guys. I'm bored. So I decided to see if such a thing is feasible: Play-by-post Magic: The Gathering. It might get rough, depending on how much stack shenanigans goes on. Unfortunately, it would make turns slow to a crawl if we had to wait a set amount of time between each particular action and phase. Maybe someone would like to do a one-on-one with regular Standard decks before we do something psycho like a 4-way Chaos EDH game?

This is madness, madness I say sir!

....I'm down

06-15-2011, 09:15 AM
Alright, wheels. Grab a standard deck. I'll let you go first. Please conclude your post with a description of your board position (permanents in play, cards in hand)

06-16-2011, 09:11 AM
sorry, was distracted by hockey last night, will get my Red Deck wins going this evening.

I'm really bad at this aren't I?

Honest to God, first turn tonight, and maybe we can punch out the whole game this weekend.

06-18-2011, 06:46 AM
I dunno, I've got the EDH release party thing tonight. :/ I'll be available most of the day.

Wheels plays a mountain

Wheels plays a memnite

Wheels taps mountain

Wheels plays Kuldotha Rebirth sacking the memnite creating three 1/1 red goblins

Wheels has 4 cards in hand

end turn

I'll be watching this thread with interest. You've got an audience, guys, don't be boring!

Mental Misstep on the Kudoltha Rebirth. You lose the spell, the tokens, and the Memnite. I pay 2 life for the spell.

I am now imagining Phoenix and Edgeworth playing Magic in the courtroom. Thanks guys, please continue.

06-18-2011, 10:30 PM
lol, whoops, I forgot mental misstep existed. Well played sir.

"Really, Wright. You WEREN'T expecting that? Tsk tsk tsk."

Draw a card, play Seachrome Coast. Tap it.

Play Preordain. Scrying 2, and leaving them both on top, but changing the order of their draw. Draw.

No combat phase. Nothing to do during second main. Ending turn.

6 cards in hand, one tapped U/W land, 2 cards in graveyard.

Draw for turn

play second mountain

tap both mountains

play Warren instigator (I assume there's no way to counter this one)

end turn

3 cards in hand

20 life

Draw card.

Drop Inkmoth Nexus for a land for turn.

End turn.

6 cards in hand. U/W land, Inkmoth nexus untapped. (Interestingly enough, both are foil.)

18 Life

Draw card

play contested war zone

passing priority (i.e. intending to move to attack phase)

06-19-2011, 09:46 AM
correction, 16 life (he has double strike)

playing a second instigator

tap two mountains, play goblin wardriver

end turn (note if you counter it, still end turn)

06-19-2011, 09:57 AM
Whoops, my bad.

Draw card.

Drop an island.

Tap all three lands for Trinket Mage.

I search my library for a Darksteel Relic (0-cost artifact, indestructible). Shuffle.

... :D

It was the very bottom card of the library. I put Darksteel Relic in to play.

End turn.

5 cards in hand. 3 lands, all tapped. Trinket Mage (2/2) in play, Darksteel Relic in play.

It might help if you used a graphic of your cards-in-play, or some sort of list. Maybe whenever you play a card, you can put up an image?

06-19-2011, 03:58 PM

...It's coming, Wheels. I suggest you leave now.

06-19-2011, 07:50 PM
Draw card

move to attack

declare all three creatures

2x Goblin Instigator

1x Goblin wardriver

battle cry activates

Activate contested warzone (one mountain left untapped)

So attacking you:

3/2 4/1 Double Strike 4/1 Double Strike

06-19-2011, 08:06 PM
"Wright...how could I possibly have lost?!"

06-19-2011, 08:08 PM
In a magical world when I would be allowed more than three turns:

Draw a card.

Play Glacial Fortress.

Tap out.

Play Shape Anew, sacrificing Darksteel Relic.

Revealing the Following:
Trinket Mage
Shape Anew
Shape Anew

06-19-2011, 08:08 PM
don't you have a blocker?

06-19-2011, 08:15 PM
Yeah, but I seriously doubt that I'd be able to live for the turn after. I block one of your doublestrikers, I take 10, putting me at 6. I drop Blightsteel the next turn, and you get one more swing at me, and you'd be able to get lethal damage through, as I'd still only have one blocker after my turn is over.

EDIT: Make that 11, putting me at 5, but the end is still the same.

Turns out that your nut draw is faster than my nut draw. I'm still hard-limited by needing 4 mana to drop my bomb.

06-19-2011, 08:20 PM
well as they say

06-19-2011, 08:21 PM
Now, if we were doing this in a tournament, I've got the perfect sideboard cards for you.

So, I was talking with pence earlier, and playing EDH in this style would require a lot of patience. Declaring attack and blocker steps would almost require a "pass priority" post from everyone.

06-19-2011, 09:42 PM
Hah! Almost as if adding insult to injury, right after my deck gets cockslapped by RDW, I get wind of JtMS being banned in Standard.

06-19-2011, 10:53 PM
Honestly, Wheels, I'm not grumpy, no matter how my typing might come off sounding.

So, now that we're sort of aware of the process, anyone want to try an EDH game? Say, 4 players? Use this thread as the sign-up thread, I'll start a new thread for the actual game when we're ready. Post your interest, and the general you intend to play.

That said, I'm in. Running Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer.

Reccomend you use the following format for easer of play:

Life: X
Hand: Y
Battlefield: <insert cards here, seperated by commas and noting tapped ones, counters etc.>
Graveyard: <cards>
Exile: <cards>
Notes: <insert notes, such as 'may have something to do in the next player's upkeep'>

06-21-2011, 01:37 PM
That's pretty good. We need one more.

I'd love to play some EDH!

everyone's favorite general Rhys the Redeemed (http://magiccards.info/shm/en/237.html).

This thing could get kind of crazy with 4 people and responding to triggers etc.

The Auntie of Doom (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=140226) will destroy you all

Wheels, you are good people.

I put together a Wort, Boggart Auntie deck once. It did fuck all in multi player, but completed dominated in 1-to-1 matchups.

One of these days I swear I'm going to put together a Squee EDH deck.

I hear that Norin the Wary is a surprisingly potent general.

I hear that Norin the Wary is a surprisingly potent general.

Oh man, is he ever. At least if your goal is to irritate the other players and cause chaos (Confusion in the Ranks is a great choice).
