View Full Version : Elementsary-Level Art

I have finally decided to create an art thread for myself! My artistic level is far below that of any of the existing individual artist threads here, I think, but I'm not against lowering the bar! :P Anyways, I usually enter brief, heavy drawing phases, and then seem to atrophy for a few months, so I'm trying to break the cycle by making this thread! Try to force myself to have a regular update schedule here. None of my stuff is too great, but I'm hoping to at least generate a lot of it. ;)

I most often just draw pencil, in this half-anime style. I originally aimed for comic book style when young, but switched over to anime once I hit high school. It wasn't until around 2007 or so that I finally started slowly trying to drift away from anime, but there's still a lot of its flavor in most of my stuff. :T

Of course, I still do the anime thing now and then. No sense in letting years of trying to get a style down go to waste. :P I used to be really bad about, "Original character; do not steal!" and I'm actually only now getting over it. So, most of my more modern anime-flavored stuff is of these same gals, whom I invented to have some characters outside of any of my projects that I could throw on the internet without worry. :/

I do fanart sometimes, to! I mainly started doing it, again, to have something to throw on the internet other than my OCs. I'll probably draw less fanart now that I've gotten over that paranoia, as the only reason I started drawing to begin with was to do personal projects.

I've done commissions before, too! Who'd pay for my terrible stuff, right!? Though, at least I had the work-ethic to make sure it was some of my least terrible stuff.

At any rate, my main plan is to try to force myself to have something I can upload every other day. Unless people think that sort of constant bumping of my own thread would be irritating in some way. If that were the case, I could shift to weekly image dumps or somesuch, but I'm mainly looking to use this thread as something to make sure I'm constantly drawing and not slacking off again. Veterans of BongoBill's Comic Replacement Game already know I'm bad about that! :o

I also have a DeviantArt (http://p4g4n3l3m3nt5.deviantart.com/), which I also made to try to encourage myself to art more, but I think I'll be more successful here, where I feel more of a social presence. Most of my older stuff I linked can be found there in larger sizes, or has probably been tossed in the Random Arting thread (http://www.gamespite.net/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=1139732&postcount=3139) before. At least I won't be ugly-ing that place up anymore! :P

Alright, and some new stuff to start off! I've lucked out at work, and have been stuck in some refresher classes as of late, which I used last week to sketch a couple of little things into my pocket notebooks during breaks! These got tossed in the Random Arting thread, and I pretty much told myself that if I scribbled enough of them for it to seem silly to post them all there, I'd make a thread. And here we are! Anyways, still in that class, and still doing pocket notebook scribbles, so here some are!

A final sketch in the theme and style of all the ones I did last week. I actually started this one last Thursday, but we ended up having almost no breaks that day, so I was unable to finish it at the time. Not at all happy with the fellow on the right, but w/e.

After all those sketches, and thinking about starting a thread, I realized I hadn't actually "gone" for anime style in a while, so I did, drawing my girls as usual. I like it.

Then I thought, "What the heck, let's try to do a sickeningly animu pic." And it was sickening, and I almost didn't finish it, and almost didn't post it here. Fortunately, background man looks crappy and silly enough that he becomes comedic to me. Anyways, after drawing that, I decided, "Definitely no more animu today."

So then I just did something random, and it was this thing. What the heck? I... think this is one of my most successful attempt at being non-animu in a long time. How'd I do that? This girl doesn't know - look at how confused she is. She's all, "I don't even know, man. I thought I was going to be an animu gal. But then I became this nerdy hipster girl instead. It's cool."

Okay, that's all. Don't worry, I'm working on some things that are not pocket notebook sketches - more serious endeavors. But, next update or two will probably be more of these, while I put together my comic for Comic Replacement Game 3. Unless I bust into drawing overdrive. Which I might.

Go for it! Nothing wrong with trying to keep yourself motivated. I've been kinda using the forums here for the same thing, but I'm definitely waiting until I can do better stuff before I post anything else.

So far, my favorites are the nunchuck guy, the World of Warcraft (I'm guessing) thing, and the shrug girl. Your eye for detail's really good. I wished I was half that good with a No. 2.

nerdy hipster girl

Your self-assessment is pretty spot on there. Gets a bit weird towards the bottom though. Shouldn't the thighs be starting to curve out before you hit the ennui? I can't help it. I keep getting chances to use it!

Thanks for the kind words, Chestnut. :p And Google, yeah, your hips comment is spot on. Demo's already pointed out to me that my anatomy needs work, but looking through various pics, I am seeing that its not at all uncommon for me to place the hips a little low. Thanks for pointing it out. :o

Anyways, just more pocket sketches for today. Maybe something better on Saturday!

More of the folks from last week's sketches, out for a drink. The two on the right look to have been rather painfully crammed onto the page. :/

And then this weirdness. I wasn't really sure what to draw, so I just went random again, and this is what came out. I kept going back-and-forth about how cartoony I wanted it to look, so it came out rather strange! Guy on the right really stands out. Maybe a sub-boss? I started to put people in the background, but it made the fact that all the foreground folk are standing on the same plane look odd.

Wow, that was a long period of drawing nothing whatsoever!
A lot of junk happened. :|
But who cares about that?

Anyways, finally started messing with a couple drawings this month, mostly done during downtime when working nights.

First, a pic I did of some classic characters of mine, because I felt guilty for having not drawn them in forever. I was passing out as I drew it, so I'm pretty amazed it came out as not awful as it did, aside from guy on the right's total anatomical wreck.

Then, I drew ponies. God help me.

Got a couple half-finished things lying around. Hopefully I'll get them finished in the near future. :/

Been a while since I uploaded anything, so here's some stuff.

I might make more of those Pokemon comics. They're dumb, but also quick and easy to draw and come up with. I also might do more things like that Ariados image. RPG comic was actually being drawn for Comic Replacement Game (http://www.talking-time.net/showthread.php?t=11395), but stuff kept me from finishing it in time.

W00T COMIX! I like these! And that Ariados emblem dealie looks downright stylish.

Wow. I have so much to say about this but instead I'll just say that this thing is amazing. Great work here.

Edit: Some of the elements lack visual unity with the bug, which is definitely the emphasis. I'd say that the little tower-shaped things could be reshaped to match the curvature of the sphere bisecting the triangle so that more unity exists there, and the bars along the top seem a little extraneous or out of place due to their thickness being unrepeated throughout the piece. These are just small criticisms. For me to grade you an A you've gotta have something good, and I'm giving this piece an A.

Love the gag in the second Pokemon comic. And I would totes buy that Ariados design on a shirt. :) It looks like something that could have come from that discontinued line of Pokemon 151 (plus Lugia and Ho-Oh) shirts for adults.
