Take a look at me now, Talking Time.
There's just an empty space.

There's nothing left there to remind me
Just a memory of this place

Take a look at me now
Because there's just just an empty space

And you embracing Phil Collins day
Is against all odds...but it's what I've got to face.

I'm confused by this thread. Every day is Phil Collins day.

But is it the official (http://gothamist.com/2012/01/27/are_you_ready_for_phil_collins_day.php) Phil Collins day? (Clear your schedules, New Yorkers; It's tomorrow.)

This year there will be a Phil Collins confessional booth, upon which people will design masks, enter the booth with their secrets in hand, and reveal them to the camera. The confidential footage will be sent to Phil Collins himself, a man who truly understands the trials, tribulations and trueness of love, and puts them to a good beat.

Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist.

It probably says a lot about me that I genuinely agree with this assessment. I get that BEE was trying to make a point about vapid, soulless, yuppie culture but Turn It On Again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B1ub5g5L0k&ob=av2e) is so good.

They don't even bother with the song's best hook until the very end! Talk about burying the lede.

ahahahaah.....

man, I went to this since it's right in my neighborhood.

It was fun and I met a lot of cool, creative people and we made phil collins masks. Eventually we went into a booth and made a "confessional" to him that they sent to his house, I wonder if he watched it.

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/402559_10100222508004134_1798072644_n.jpg Mine isn't pictured.

My mask was my favorite era of phil (a trick of the tail) and no one knew it was that, they called it "wolfman phil".

It was fun, and heather, the woman running it was certainly a fan of his, but not of Genesis.

As for everyone else it was hard to tell when any sincerity began...

And then I went home and listened to face value.

I hope everyone is ready to celebrate Phil Collins day on saturday.

This year the official event is kind of lame:

This Year 2014:

Phil Collins Childrens Choir

followed by an all kids open mic night

Beach Church:

224 Beach 97th st

5:30-7:30

Can't say I'm too interested in being around everyone else's kids.

Went on a date last weekend, no reply when bringing up a second date.
Looks like I'll be spending the day as Phil would want: alone~

I think we have South Park (http://southpark.wikia.com/wiki/Timmy_2000) to blame for that one.

It's been around for longer than that.

Phil Collins exists in this weird space where he comes from a musical background that gives him plenty of artistic credibility — ’70s Genesis was a powerhouse, driven in large part by his rhythm section. Then Genesis became popular after he took on vocal duties in addition to drumming. He was the only "working class" member of the band, which started as a bunch of boys at an upper-crust school (he came on after they'd recorded a couple of albums), and he brought a love of American soul and R&B to the group. For a while, he recorded with a fantastic jazz fusion group called Brand X when Genesis wasn't touring and eventually recorded a solo album to further explore his love of Motown style music and work out his despair over a divorce.

So, lots of credibility. Tremendous talent behind the drum kit. But then it turned out people really liked his solo music, which really didn't sound much like Genesis. It was simple, pop-inflected, radio-friendly. Soon Genesis began to sound more like Collins' solo work, minus the Earth Wind & Fire horns section. He became pretty much inescapable throughout the middle ’80s; he was all over TV and movies and MTV and on magazine covers. His trademark drum sounds — Roland drum machines and the heavily processed "gated snare" that gave live drums a crisp, almost electronic sound, both of which he combined so dramatically and innovatively with "In the Air Tonight" — became defining sounds of ‘80s pop. He was everywhere.

Collins is a short, chubby, bald guy with a goofy grin. A lot of his popular solo material is pretty sappy and trite, and at his worst he openly ripped off other artists (the similarities between "Sussudio" and Prince's "1999" are not an accident). It's easy to just ignore his better material and laugh because, hey, there's this dorky-looking British singer trying to play black music and his music sounds soooo VH1. He's probably gay! Ha ha ha!

Today I discovered Collins has begun reissuing his catalog. Business as usual, right? But he's updated the album covers for this go-around. He always used close-up portraits of himself for all but like one or two albums he ever recorded solo, and for the new reissues he's recreated those portraits in the here and now as a much older man. It's a pretty striking effect, and feels a bit melancholy.

That's pretty awesome. I'm picturing a Dorian Gray scenario where Phil never aged but all of his album covers did.
