From Cartoon Brew (http://www.cartoonbrew.com/animators/jean-%e2%80%9cmoebius%e2%80%9d-giraud-rip-1938-2012.html)

He was revered in France where they exhibited his comic art with the respect and appreciation that’s never given to cartoonists in the US.

On one hand I'm sad at his passing but on the other he lived a long life and had been sick and suffering for some time.

I wish European comics had had more of a presence in America. I've heard of Moebius, but I don't know of anything he's actually done. I'm bad at comics.

I really knew him only from his Panzer Dragoon contributions, which might not number any more than one. This one:

But dammit, what a one. Can anyone recommend where to start getting better acquainted with his work?

If you're into sci-fi, The Incal is pretty great, but look for new reprints with the original coloring. The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius is good science fantasy stuff as well. If you're into westerns, go with Blueberry (there's something of greater overall storyline, but you can pick up from pretty much anywhere). Looking at Wikipedia, not a great deal of his work seems to have English translations, but that's a start at least.

If you'd just like to browse random bits of his work, I follow this tumblr which never fails to leave something interesting on my dashboard each day:

I mostly remember his work from Heavy Metal back in the day as well as the design work he did for movies (Alien, Fifth Element). He was a great artist.

Here's a picture gallery which has him with, well, everyone. (http://conversazionisulfumetto.wordpress.com/2012/03/11/un-moebius-fra-gli-altri/)

Looking at that pic with Miyazaki, it's interesting to note he began to resemble his own art style.
