There really is so much to love about this image. A couple choice bits that haven't been noted yet:

Of all the poor victims of this situation we are clearly meant to sympathize with, the most prominent are this kid on the left who's going to catch the zombie plague from this old guy here, and even moreso, the woman on the right, whose personal torture would appear to be... that people have brought their annoying children into the waiting room, and they're shrieking in her ear. Are we for or against white blond 8-year old males? Is it a class thing? The one we sympathize with has a nice classy vest, while the screaming monsters clearly come from a blue collar and farming family respectively? Also, she's apparently reading Oprah's magazine. Isn't she Part Of The Problem, being a vocal Obama supporter?

The other thing is... there's always really been something that freaks me out about this particular issue that this image nicely addresses. I mean, just ignore for the moment all the obvious misconceptions about a proper first-world style public health care system being on the table for the U.S., the economic impact, the actual reduction on the workloads of hospitals, and the really fundamental confusion between emergency room visits and actual scheduled doctor's appointments, put ourselves in the shows of these crazies, and look at what their big fear actually seems to be:

"If poor people have health insurance, they'll actually go to hospitals when they have serious problems, and I'd have to wait in line! I'd much rather they just stay home and die, so that I'm not inconvenienced like that!"

I mean... dude. That is not an opinion it is OK to express. That's kinda demonstrating that you need to have your living thinking human being card taken away. Particularly if you're involved in politics in any way.

For another example, it kind of amazes me how this guy, to the best of my knowledge, still has not been torn limb from limb by an angry mob. (http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/mon-january-25-2010/thank-you--south-carolina---andre-bauer)

I would be more charitable than Google about interpreting that image (note: I know nothing about this "Dees" aside from the pictures in this thread). I think it's possible for people who oppose anti-universal health care to believe that it could lead to an overall decline in public health and health care (regardless of whether or not this is true).

I'm very sorry for your brother's difficulties. The current scientific consensus is that vaccines don't contribute to autism, and that the research that started the anti-vaccination movement was fraudulent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMR_vaccine_controversy), though. Not getting vaccinated can also cause public health problems because it weakens herd immunity.

Yeaaaah. That article has nothing to do with why vaccines cause autism. The government doesn't (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/Concerns/thimerosal/) concede (http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp0802904) that thiomersal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thiomersal_controversy) causes autism.

There's been no link made between thimerosal and autism. Link. (http://autism.about.com/od/vaccinesandautism/a/mmrautism.htm)
After thimerosal was taken out of most vaccines, the rates of autism did not decline.
Here's another useful link about the topic. (http://autism.about.com/od/causesofautism/a/dovaccines.htm) And another one. (http://www.immunizationinfo.org/science/no-evidence-mmr-vaccine-causes-autism)
Concerning your article you posted, here's this. (http://autism.about.com/od/medicalissuesandautis1/qt/vaccinesmito.htm) (a decision in a court doesn't constitute evidence is the gist of it)

Also that monkey study turned out to be of pretty poor research. (http://leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk/2010/07/26/laura-hewitson-has-left-the-university-of-pittsburgh/) More about it. (http://leftbrainrightbrain.co.uk/2010/07/16/the-genie-is-out-of-the-bottle-vaccines-cause-autism/)

Yeah, no worries. I was a little rude in my response, so sorry about that. Autism is just one of my hot button issues, thanks to my experiences. I just wanted to let you know that there is a sizable group who contest the idea that there is nothing wrong with the vaccines, and that there is some real science to back up the idea that mercury in vaccines causes autism. You did read my edit with the scientific study, right? Besides, it wouldn't be the first time the government has lied to us.

It may also be worth noting that according to the Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/autism/ds00348/dsection=symptoms), children are most likely to begin presenting symptoms of autism spectrum disorder between the ages of 12 months and 24 months. 12 months also happens to be the age at which the CDC (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents/downloads/parent-ver-sch-0-6yrs.pdf) recommends that children receive a variety of vaccinations, including Influenza and MMR vaccines (the two that the anti-vaccination advocates typically point to as causing autism). I'm not aware of any reputable studies that demonstrate a higher incidence of of ASD among children who have been vaccinated compared to those who have not, which is the kind of smoking gun which would indicate a causative relationship between vaccines and ASD. In the absence of any such evidence, the relationship between vaccination and the onset of symptoms of autism seems coincidental; they're two events that simply tend to happen at approximately the same time in a child's life.

This points to one of the more insidious aspects of the anti-vaccination movement: it tells the parents of autistic children that they did something wrong in having their children vaccinated, and that they're responsible for causing a disorder that in reality they had no control over. I can't help but consider that to be irresponsible and callous.

The other major problem I have with the anti-vaccination movement is that vaccinations save millions of lives each year. According to the World Health Organization (http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs286/en/index.html), measles alone caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year prior to 1980, and still killed over 139,000 people (mostly children) worldwide in 2010. If large numbers of parents are dissuaded from having their children vaccinated because of flawed studies and bogus inferences, we know what the consequences will be, and they will be terrible.

I apologize for shitting up the Bad Politics thread with unnecessary sincerity. By way of reparations, I'll just leave you all with a link to Kate Beaton (http://beatonna.livejournal.com/57906.html) making fun of old Canadian political cartoons.

I'm not saying vaccines can't help people, it's just that due the the mercury in them, they can also hurt people. If they'd just remove the mercury, I'd have a lot less problems with vaccinations, though I'd still want people to have the ability to refuse to give them to their kids (freedom of choice and all that).

If large numbers of parents are dissuaded from having their children vaccinated because of flawed studies and bogus inferences, we know what the consequences will be, and they will be terrible

I was going to say things, but then Chris said them before me. All of this "vaccines cause autism" talk is absolute nonsense.

Yeaaaah. That article has nothing to do with why vaccines cause autism. Here, read this: "U.S. Government Concedes That Mercury Causes Autism" http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2008/03/22/u-s-government-concedes-that-mercury-causes-autism.aspx It's not the vaccines themselves that cause Autism, its the mercury in them. Do some research next time, instead of just surfing Wikipedia.

If you follow the link to the actual article that article is quoting, the exact quote they use is "childhood vaccines contributed to symptoms of the disorder". Meaning that the vaccines contributed to aggravated SYMPTOMS of the (extremely rare) genetic disease she had, not the cause of the actual disease itself. Symptoms are not the cause of a malady, they are the sign of one.

Of course, that's not what that website said and quickly jumped on the "lol government says there's no link BUT THIS IS A LINK DERP" train, but that's not accurate and it's not what the actual source said. Sorry, but I don't trust the information from that website for even half a second. I don't have time right now to read the full "scientific study" but I'm really curious to see what it has to say.

All of that said, I am sorry about your younger brother. I've had to deal with something similar and I know how hard it can be on the family.

I've never really liked that article (wait, February 2012? I think he must have wrote something similar earlier, but I could be mistaken), for some of the reasons that Mary Kaye, mcc, and others in the comments offer. It's possible and common to believe that your government and society are committing or sanctioning atrocities without taking up arms against either (awkward sentence). Some people responded to these criticisms by saying that, with abortion, it would be more feasible for extreme anti-abortion advocates to stop abortions, but I still feel his point is unfair.

I do like this, though:

Granted, I was saying in the other thread how amazing fresh eggs are. And I'm sure raw milk IS really tasty, and probably safe if you can get it from a clean farm. I just wouldn't trust it at all for mass distribution. But if I had a friend/relative with a cow, shit yeah I'd drink it fresh. It's just that's not how it works for most people. And to accuse "big farm" of a conspiracy because they have to pasteurize for distribution is kinda dumb.

Yeah, the raw milk is very tasty and we're satisfied that it's safe, but we certainly don't hold with the movement which maintains that raw milk is a panacea, that cancer is a natural and desirable immune response, and that vaccines are full of Morgellons-causing nanites. At one point my wife and I had to talk her mother out of buying a "water ionizer" that would shrink water molecules (???) in order to make them healthier (???), so rest assured that we're taking her advice with a certain amount of salt.

Well, he was standing right there when I had the sample, and smell is connected to taste, so it was more of a situational thing, but I invite anyone who thinks raw milk tastes all that different to compare it to whole milk, rather than the 1-2% milk i suspect they're comparing it to.

Don't buy raw milk from someone at a market you don't know. There's a reason shit gets pasteurized before you buy it at the store, and if it's just some random dude who smells like butts, you shouldn't trust that it's safe.

I would argue that you should never drink raw milk anyway since there's a ridiculous number of really nasty bacterias that can grow in raw milk. Even if you know the farmer or whatever you're putting yourself at risk for what I would say is basically no reason, but I know some people will disagree with that. That's fine I guess, but again, make sure you do your research before you buy raw milk. It's better to spend the time looking into it and minimizing your chances of getting tuberculosis/e.coli/salmonellosis etc. etc. than not doing that.

Of course it's even better to just buy pasteurized milk and then not worrying about getting of that shit at all because as good as milk is it's totally not worth risking getting a life threatening illness over.

Plus, I mean, whole milk already tastes like fat mixed with cheese...how the hell can you even drink raw milk? That's like Shin Neo Whole Milk Double Ultra. Disgusting.

There were moves to impeach him, I don't recollect that it actually went through.

Being impeached is what it's called when moves are made to remove someone from office. He wasn't actually removed from office, but he was impeached. Andrew Johnson wasn't removed from office when he was impeached either.
