View Full Version : From the Levant to the Subcontinent: Talking About Indian and Middle Eastern Music

I've always loved music from these regions, and with Pandora I've been able to get a steady stream of the stuff.

The thing is, I usually have it streaming on my tablet while I'm reading or on my computer or whatever, so I don't always catch the artist names. I'm wondering what are some good albums to start with on iTunes, and who does US tours?

Edit: And no, I'm not lumping the two regional styles together. It's just that they're the two outside of the usual American and European genres that I enjoy the most, and since they're geographically contiguous, it didn't seem too out there to put them both in the same thread.

Lebanon has its own Paris-Hilton-as-a-Musician (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaraWc_rmb0). Not as bad as you'd think in both cases. Haters to the left!

Also from Lebanon, Mashrou' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNMUcRXekrg) Leila (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwXMSa9yokQ).

Do you remember that Shania Twain album with pop/country/Bollywood versions.

I was ever so sad when Ravi Shankar's obituaries came out last year. Fantastic musician himself and such an inspiration for others (including my much-favoured George Harrison). I should really get around to listening to more of his repertoire.

What are you looking for, exactly? Classical, pop, fusion?

I've found a number of genres to be enjoyable, but my favorite style of Indian music is that bouncy classical/dance fusion that I don't know what it's called. They dance to a song like that in the Diwali episode of The Office, if that helps.

As for the Middle Eastern stuff, classical style or techno/dance fusion are my favorites.

You should check out Karsh Kale. Also, the various Coke Studios and Dewarists on youtube are great resources as well.

I've never seen the office before, so i tried to find the clip on youtube, and all i got was steve carrell singing some terribly off key and kinda insulting song.

off key and kinda insulting

That's 75% of his character, really.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check them out.
