View Full Version : Another One Bites the Dust - Comics Alliance Shut Down

http://www.theouthousers.com/index.php/news/121852-not-a-joke-comicsalliance-shut-down-by-aol.html

Having 2/3 of the sites I read on breaks at work get shut down within the last couple months sucks. I'm going to really miss the Funkywatch and movie review columns the most (and having half a clue when my comics are coming out, I suppose).

Edit: And as of today they're back. False alarm I guess.

Best Art Ever, Funkywatch, and Movie Reviews were my favorites. Is War Rocket Ajax still going to continue?

Today's showed up on Chris' blog (http://www.the-isb.com/), so I would imagine so.

A lot of the things I like on the Internet keep getting shut down by mega corporations. Are companies trying to kill the Internet? They're doing a good job of killing my interest in it, anyway.

Obviously, we’ll have some pretty big news to discuss on next week’s show. Hoo boy, will we ever.

CA alliance is/was one of the sites that I checked everyday,
Im totally grateful to comic alliance because they liked my comic (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2012/02/12/best-webcomics-ever-this-week-2-12-12/)a while back ,
and did a lot to give exposure to a lot of great unknown comic artists.

I dont know why Kurtz is dancing over CA grave (https://twitter.com/pvponline/status/328964117161472000) did they did something mean to him?

Well, this is certainly butt. This is the most butt, in fact.

I read mostly Chris Sims stuff on there, but any post with substance (not photos or a press release) was worth reading and usually well written. This is bad news.

Probably lingering resentment about how he was never a "legitimate" comics creator. He stood by impotently and watched as his buddies Frank Cho and Mike Weiringo skyrocketed to superstardom in the industry while his fame was measured in website hits.

And that was the last reason to delete PVP from my bookmarks.

Holy shit, what a catastrophe. :( I quit comics a while back, but I still just assumed Comics Alliance would still be there if/when I got back into them. What I'm worried about is, is someone archiving the site? Because there are a lot of good pieces it would kill me to see go away.

WHAT.

That's...

It makes no sense.

Comics Alliance was good.

It was the only good thing AOL ever did.

I guess they didn't do it on purpose.

Yeah, that was what finally made me unfollow Kurtz on Twitter, too. His callous dismissal of a great site going down & good people losing their jobs just because of his usual bad-tempered weirdness was the last straw.

This really sucks! I never read as much of CA's stuff as I should've, but I had a lot of respect for everything and everybody involved, not just Mr. Sims, and to know that it was apparently making money and actually doing well makes its closure even more frustrating.

Oh, he prolly thought some generic joke they made about the fattest man alive was about him. Easy mistake to make, I can totally see him doing it.

Wow yeah christ, Kurtz is a miserable piece of shit. Even if I didnt agree with every single editorial CA posted, they all made me think. I loved everything Sims did of course and it sucks to see him out of a full time job.

You know what? Let's pour one out and remember the good times. Like this article about Neal Adams's absolutely insane Batman Odyssey (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/03/08/batman-odyssey-neal-adams-insane/). Or this Ask Chris Column where he delves pretty deep into the idea of the Batman Family (http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/11/18/ask-chris-80-defining-the-batman-family/).

I remember that time Chris Sims had a feud with Valerie D'Orazio over whether or not comics was a sexist business

Way to die on that hill Chris

just spitballing here, but mainstream floppy comics readers are a small and shrinking audience and I'm betting the vast majority of them run an ad blocker. I can't imagine there's a hell of a lot of money in running a site that caters to them.

That's the thing though, the site was reportedly actually making money. It was doing alright for itself! Which is why so many people are nonplussed/angry at its shutdown.

I just hope that Chris Sims and Matt Wilson keep doing their movie reviews somehow. That shit was the highlight of my week. And they were just about to do the Dead or Alive movie! Come on!

Octopus Prime

Matt and Chris's movie reviews made me want to give Batman & Robin, Street Fighter and Superman 3 another chance!

Nothing else has ever been able to make that claim!

Rascally Badger
05-01-2013, 11:08 AM
Me too with Batman and Robin. Too bad it is not the movie that Sims thinks it is. It has flashes of campy hilarity, but half of it still wants to be the Tim Burton, making the whole thing an unwatchable mess.

I always liked Funkywatch. I started reading the funnies because of that, though the KC Star doesn't have Funky Winkerbean. It did lead me to discover Culdesac, which was awesome.

Scott Kurtz, you have to get out of here! Your "wit" is blunted!

And dammit, Comics Alliance :( Although I barely read any comics at all, their articles were always either insightful or hilarious, even if I didn't necessarily agree with them, and it was great to be able to follow the medium itself through them instead of, you know, through actual comics :p Their takedown of AvX last year was phenomenal and got me into trouble at work for laughing so hard, and their movie reviews were often a highlight of my browsing time. Best Art Ever also introduced me not just to amazing artwork, but also to interesting and innovative illustrating techniques that I can only wish I could emulate.

I wonder if Chris will revive The ISB?

Octopus Prime

The ISB updated for the first time in months as soon as this news hit, so "apparently"

After 1up's closure earlier this year, and now Comicsalliance is getting the ax for no discernable reason (I hope they win the Eisner just to make AOL look even worse), two of the roughly five websites I frequent on a daily basis are gone in the span of a couple months. If Giant Bomb and A.V. Club go next I don't know what to do.

I'm really going to miss Comics Alliance for keeping me in the know about cool comic releases and culture.:(
