This thread has inspired me to rewatch Futurama
Likewise! I haven't seen most of the new episodes yet, but of the original run I will say this: bad Futurama is still damn good TV. The first episode alone has enough humor to be spread across an entire season of most American sitcoms (an entire series, in many cases). There's also a surprising amount of subtle detail, from the foreshadowing shadow in 1999 to Matt Groening's head in a jar. I'm pretty sure I also saw a fish swimming around in the reverse scuba suit.

"Yeah, but I ain't done yet. I've got a fool-proof plan to make sure I go home the champ. See that locker? Tanya keeps her tap-shoes in there, so just before she dances, I'll sneak in there and put rusty tacks in her shoes! (giddily) The harder she dances, the more she bleeds!"

"Oh it gets worse! once Tanya drops out due to blood-loss, I'll kidnap her parents and force them to watch while I cut off her hair with these hedge-clippers!"

"Help, I got beat up by a cute little girl. Please fix my knees so I can get revenge"

"Doctor said my heart wasn't so good, but thats okay because today I got to dance and that made people happy."
"I never knew I could hate someone this much. I'm going to tap-dance on her grave some day!"

"Most people think I smell like a burning zoo."

"Woohoo! I win! In your FACE, dead little girl! I'm not even going to wait to dance on your grave. I'm going to dance on your corpse!"

I just finished the end of season 6 last night, and as an overall season it does go through a noticeable upward swing. Definitely a lot better than I expected based on the movies and first few episodes after they returned. Also, I skipped the anthology one because I randomly saw it when it aired and remember it being bad. Looking forward to season 7.

In retrospect, the CC era Futurama shows will be seen to be at least as good as the Fox era. Nerdspectations were extremely high when the new episodes premiered and it's an established fact that those can never be met, let alone exceeded. I thought the new episodes were fantastic for the most part, but that's on the public record.

Octopus Prime

The biggest flaw with the CC seasons is that they started with the worst episode of the series almost right out the gate.

Also, the focus of Hermes and Amy jokes focused more on "Ha Ha! They enjoy smoking maijuana and being sexy in inappropriate situations! HILARIOUS"

And now that I think about it, the latter wasn't even that common...

I remember thinking in the first CC season that it was like they were shaking off the rust and fell back on "we are on cable now so we can be grosser/sexier/more blunt with pot jokes!" Which is funny since it was still about the most tame show on the network. I think on balance the entire series is pretty even. At some point I'll have to site and do a front-to-back viewing, since it's been a while since I've seen the early episodes and many of the CC ones I've only seen once.

Some of the best episodes of the series are in the back half of the final season. The one Octo quoted the heck out of, for example, as well as one of my favorites, 2-D Blacktop, which I quoted the heck out of and posted screencaps on the last page? Or te one before that

Well, there's also Saturday Morning Fun Pit, in which at least part of that title is correct.

It's not very good. It's kind of bad. Opinions are divided, and it's worth watching at least once, but after the novelty of the format wears off I didn't think it had a lot going for it.

Fun Pit at least had a few funny moments, like the multi-door hallway chase that never happened, and Nixon's increasingly desperate dubbing attempts. Doesn't hold a candle to most of the other Anthology-like episodes though.

But at least it's no eye-phone.

Sprite's Guide to Futurama

- The Fox half is better at characterization, whereas the CC half is better at sci-fi-tropes-of-the-week. Except for a couple episodes with Fry, the characters are more or less static by the end of Season Four, and no changes really affect them much. What the latter half lacks in character moments it makes up for in fun speculative wackiness. Your enjoyment depends on why you like the show.

- You can usually tell if an episode will be bad in the CC half by following a simple formula: NNYC episodes are ensemble pieces, but space travel episodes are crew pieces. That is, space episodes should focus on Leela, Fry, Bender, and maybe one or two other characters important to the plot. If the entire Planet Express staff goes along for a mission, with no explanation, the episode will probably be bad.

"Aah, perfect timing! I just turbocharged the ship's matter compressor."
"What's the matter compressor?"

possible best joke of the series

The CC era episodes are more densely-packed with amazing gags and jokes that tend to hit, whereas the Fox eps were a bit more scattershot. If a CC episode is "good", it's going to be great throughout. 30th Century Fox, Yo Leela Leela, that one where Clamps joins the crew to murder Bender (sorry, forgot the name) - hardly any dud jokes in their entire runtime.

I've been re-watching the show in Netflix (an activity I highly recommend, by the way) and I've been enjoying the hell out of it, and I've come across my absolute favorite Fry line ever, I don't think there's any topping it.

"Look, on the screen! It's that guy you are!"

Also, there seems to be at least some minor edits to the Netflix version compared to the old DVDs. In the episode where Fry, Bender and Leela get fired from Planet Express and go to work at the Cyrogenic facility, the original episode had Bender pull a severed arm out which had a career chip reading 'Ambassador to India' or something like that in the original version, but the Netflix episode has the screen read 'Chainsaw Juggler'.

I guess they didn't want to imply that Bender just ripped some guy's arm off, so having him find an arm belonging to someone who had a job with a high risk of dismemberment was their solution? I dunno, it's weird.

ThricebornPhoenix
05-04-2014, 11:58 AM
I got curious enough to look it up:
After the 2011 Norway attacks, some syndicated versions of the episode, such as the version shown on Netflix streaming in the United States, Canada, and the UK, replaced the "Prime Minister of Norway" screen with "Chainsaw Juggler" on the part where Bender scans the severed human arm to see what the career chip on his hand says.

I'm kind of in the mood for speculation, so let's try this: in the episode Parasites Lost, do you think the worms would have remained friendly symbiotes, or would they have eventually sought to control Fry? They certainly had the knowledge and the access to his bodily functions. I have a hard time believing that they would have been satisfied with silently making Fry awesome when they could have ensured their future and made him their puppet.

ThricebornPhoenix

Just got to that episode.

Everyone objects to the worms on account of, you know, worms ew. Nobody seems to know much more about them, and if they do they aren't terribly concerned about long-term effects. The biggest clue we have to go on, I think, is that Fry's body is "The Universe" to the worms. That strongly implies that they don't know or don't care about anything outside of it, so why should they try for a hostile takeover?

because they are a relatively primitive society. Despite how quickly they've advanced their society, they still carry spears and swing swords, they are not technologically advanced. When they gain a greater understanding of "their universe", they'll realize there's more to it than just Fry. They'd probably have a pretty advanced "space program" in a matter of weeks, possibly even days (I'm going by the rules where "time is accelerated" for them, because their lifespans are so short. Pretty standard for cartoons, and also occured in another episode when a microscopic society lived on Bender, so it's standard for Futurama as well.). Alternatively, seizing control of Fry's motor functions, and using him to explore, may prove easier for them.

I mean, compare them to us. We once thought the sun revolved around the Earth, and that Earth was actually flat. Doesn't mean we didn't eventually figure out we were wrong. We also look out into space all the time, and you better believe that we'd explore the shit out of it if it were easier. In the futurama universe, the kind of technology that makes space exploration totally easy, totally exists, and the worms would probably reach that tech level at some point.

Also the idea of sequestering our elderly away in a virtual universe which resembles a run-down nursing home is depressingly hilarious.

That's, like, two degrees removed from what I always want to do.

I probably won't keep up with the rewatch, but I'd for sure participate in a show-by-show discussion. :)

Sweet, alright. I'll try to get on that but I'm not sure I would be able to keep it up. I will do my best!

Even if you just get things started I think it can more or less run itself. Say we discuss two episodes a week starting every Monday or whatever people agree on. That way you don't have to take on any additional responsibilities and can miss a week if you need to.

How come no one is talking about the fact that there is a new episode of Futurama in the form of a podcast and it is really good.

Warning, it does include Chris Hardwick, if that's a turn-off.
