So, the new Soul Calibur IV teaser (http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/12170) just came out. No gameplay of course.

I love the series, and I'm looking forward to the game, but, are Ivy breasts getting bigger or WTF? I mean, in Soul Calibur I she was larger than other women, but somehow sexy. With each new delivery she looks more and more like a prostitute.

And why is Nightmare still in the game? Heck, he shouldn't even be in the third game, storywise.

Opinions?

Yeah, I think you're right Ivy. Man, she's gonna have problems as she gets older. Back + A+K = pop her back. And you're right about Nightmare, too. What's he still doing shuffling around? The only way he would still exist is if everyone else failed, which they clearly didn't, because they're still alive. I hope they tone down Tira's costume and pallette. Her P2 costume wasn't too bad, but its main color was very evocative of Level 4 in Zelda 1. Which is to say kind of ugly and brownish orange.

wow. that is pretty ridiculous. i didn't think they could surpass tacky taki, but lo, they managed to find a way.

I love Soul Calibur.

Despite the prostitutedness, I just can't bring myself to hate Ivy either.

Granted, I don't know how much my opinion accounts for since I mainly play SC on my Dreamcast. I've literally played MINUTES of all of the other games combined.

Then your opinion accounts. Soul Calibur for Dreamcast is still the best of the series. Sober character designs, no ultra-huge breasts, good extra stuff.

Either someone new has Soul Calibur or maybe it's Voldo. And it looks like Ivy has stretch marks.

By the way, did I see Sauron's tower there, or was it my imagination?

If so, is this a crossover? Like Namco vs. Tolkien?

alexb
06-12-2007, 07:54 PM
That's probably going to be Babel or something. Aside from the tower, did you catch the raven flying by?

Yeah. I thought it was a Nazgul, but no.

I just hope they don't go all gritty. Based on the shot of Soul Calibur (the sword) it looks like they're sort of revamping the look of things (well, Ivy's still a whore) to be more... unneccessarily detailed? I guess I just miss the clean, crisp look (/gameplay) of the original, but this is the next generation and if people can make things more complicated and crazy looking then by jove they'll probably do it.

Also, Mitsurugi looks silly without armor on his sides! Is that new?

And once again Nintendo gets shafted.

I say this half-facetiously of course.

I played a fair amount of II, but III felt all wrong. I'd like to give the original a shot, since it seems like it is the best of the bunch. But isn't it a little soon for the fourth game?

Ivy is a total skank, but she can be fun to play once you know what you are doing.

alexb
06-12-2007, 09:18 PM
Fifth game, actually. It will have been about 2 and half years since the last game by the time this one comes out. That's not too egregious. And Mitsurugi lost most of his armor in the third game. His design in four is basically a more baroque interpretation of of his design from three. Speaking of him, it's kind of sad that he's been turned from a Musashi-like journey-not-the-destination sort of guy into an amoral, power hungry jerk.

Anyone think Setsuka was inspired by Lady Snowblood? We should try to trace all of the design influences for the SC characters.

Yup. I think Soul Edge had the best intro of all, and better in-game music too.

And in terms of storytelling, that game and Soul Calibur 1 (if we consider Cervantes wasn't in the original) were the last games that kind of made sense. But, meh, I guess that's too much to ask for a fighting game, ergo, sense didn't last.

Kirin
06-13-2007, 10:55 AM
Meh, I always thought Ivy was too much trouble to play anyway. I'll just wait over here for more characters. (I did kind of like her Rose of Versailles outfit in 3, though.)

Also, here's hoping that any new characters this time around are a little better than 3's, which I didn't much care for. I give 3 a pass mainly for the awesome create-a-character system.

alexb

My favorite Ivy costume was her alternate in SC2. You know, the really butch looking one with the short pants and tailcoat and slicked back hair? I mean, yeah, it was still about 150 years too early for the era, but it was a lot more period than purple leather and spandex.

Maybe, but I feel like once they started sticking with "Calibur" it became its own series. Maybe that is just me though. Also, the Wii spinoff. I just hate seeing brands die of overexposure.

This is the costume I use in the first game (I'm fairly certain, it has been a while since I played though). It contains very little skank, and I still like Ivy.

I know. Character designs were waaaay better in Soul Calibur 1 and even 2. Not only in the breast deparment (it's funny to think that SC designer is actually a woman). Dead or Alive has been beaten in its own arena.

For example, Nightmare's armor in SC1 was more realistic, with little ornaments and stuff (same goes for his Soul Edge). His third costume in SC2, which is Siegfried, had a less pictoric armor too, with some scratches even. Not the angelic, shiny white he has in 3...

...What's with the feathers, anyway?

and people who've never actually had sex with real women. or even seen a real one, for that matter.

seriously, i think i've finally hit that level of maturity that stuff that would have appealed to me when i was 16 just doesnt cut it anymore. Rachel from sigma, for instance, is just revolting to me (probably because of the gooey plastic sheen on her skin, but yeah) while jade from BG&E is hot.

the thing i dont get is that all these random forumites are totally like omghawt bigbooobiesftw etc. What, are they going to sit and masturbate to their video games? The internet, as many have said, exists to remove the barrier between porn and people who want porn. so why waste time with softcore teasing if nekkid is what you want?

I hear you. It's not the undercleavage that bothers me, though. It's everything else about the design. But Tira has potential. The idea of a bipolar loli assassin who's a slave to Soul Edge in body and mind is at least unique. Her hula hoop is pretty stupid, but what can you do? The fact that she's constantly trying to kill Sophitia's children is also interesting.

And speaking of Sophitia, why do we have Cassandra? She annoys the piss out of me. Her little magical girl costumes and bitchy attitude make her one of my least favorite characters. And she serves no real point in the story. Sophitia could easily take over anything plotwise they could dole out to her. She's pointless and irritating and I wish she'd fall in a hole and die. I guess they were trying to rip off SNK's Athena in some oblique way.

I want to see a Jesuit priest or something. You can't just have them traipsing through Spain and Italy and not run into an inquisitor. Some sort of crazed Torquemada type character with blood red robes that fights with a quarterstaff or estoc or a rapier and main gauche.

Andrew

This version of Ivy and Rachel from Sigma look so ridiculously alike I'd swear it has to be intentional.

I think fanservice is fine when it's taken to such a degree it's over-the-top hilarious and it doesn't ruin the tone of the game. Rumble Roses, for instance and to some degree DOA. However, I don't play DOA because the gameplay doesn't appeal to me. Yet, Rumble Roses has better gameplay than Yukes' other games, IMO.

The WWE games have become a slave to trying to match the presentation of the fed, and completely neglected being good wrestling games. Despite feeling initially less like a sim than the WWE games, RR has smoother, quicker, more responsive controls.

Actually, Namco was probably "ripping off" themselves:

Well, I was specifically pointing out that costume, which is on that page. I guess that was a poor choice of words. Less "probably" than "more likely."

And sue me--I liked Cass' green costume.

And how is Tira "loli" anyway?

In SC2, she's supposed to be Valkyrie. In SC3, The Create-a-Fighter fills that role.

For best results in SC2, use her best sword, "Valkyrie". Not exactly subtle there.

Oh and screw you. I liked Cassandra.

Her character design takes away from it, with the giant boobs, but Tira's got a kind of childish, yet ravenous manner to her that is often associated with Lolita-type characters. Plus, it's pretty much implied that she's been a sex toy for Nightmare since she met him.

And that Ivy costume is actually pretty embarrassing. There's a problem when it makes the designs in Rumble Roses look tasteful in comparison.

But... since Nightmare separated from Seigfried, isn't it more or less just a possessed suit of armor?

... Nevermind, I'm sure the doujinshi's been written to explain it.

The better way to asimilate why Nightmare still walks around is to remember that, perhaps, is just a marketing decision. People love big, evil armor-guy with evil-eyed sword, even if it makes no sense in the overall story.

Kirin
06-18-2007, 10:57 AM
Oh I wasn't complaining that the Nightmare character makes no sense (I mean, "Soul Edge is evil and magical" can pretty much cover anything), but rather that Tira being a sex slave to an empty suit of armor was something I didn't want to think about to hard. ...which I suppose I already have just by bringing it up.

BUT Siegfried has both Soul Edge and Soul Calibur in SCIII. He even sealed the first with the second in the game intro.

Nightmare's armor was brought back to life thanks to Zasalamel, according to the official story. It doesn't explain why he also brought a second eyed-sword to the world.

Siegfired has a large part of Soul Edge, but not all of it. With a little magical assist from Zasalamel, Soul Edge's remaining, unsealed portion was able to inhabit the armor Siegfried left behind like some kind of demonic hermit crab.

If you like the others, sure. It's flawed, but it's still Soul Calibur. Great graphics, with both wide-screen and progressive support, as well as Dolby Pro-Logic II sound. About two dozen characters and the ability to create characters in about a dozen additional movesets beyond those of the game's story characters. There's also a light Strategy RPG that I can kind of take or leave, but it's there. Yeah, I'd say it's worth getting, especially if you follow the story any.

I did like it, but it's not perfect, that's for sure.

I haven't decided yet which one was, em, less good --Soul Calibur III with it's flaws and questionable character design decisions, or Soul Calibur II with not only Link, Heichachi and Spawn (WTF), but Necrid too. That's a pretty large stain in the series.

alexb
06-28-2007, 12:25 AM
Totally sucked is probably a bit harsh. It's nearly identical to SCII in game mechanics and the load times are shorter (than the PS2 iteration, at any rate). I'm with you 100% that the character costumes are really tacky, but there are things in its favor, like having user controlled endings using the game engine instead of a couple of pencil drawings with scrolling text. Also, Rock is back and looks pretty cool (though he has a rather inexplicable upper class British accent). And you get some cool stages like Ling Sheng Su Temple and the raft in the moat of Ohstreinsburg Castle, along with new iterations of some of the better levels from the original SC. Of course, the initial release had some bugs, some rather serious. If you're going to play it, you may want to play it using a devoted memory card. Apparently, the game can corrupt the other data on the card in some way that involves the RTS portion. The Greatest Hits version would presumably have fixed this issue, though.

If only Soul Edge had the same gameplay that Calibur, it would be my favorite too. You also had interactive endings there and, overall, it has the BEST music in the series.

In other things, Sasaki on EGM: "Now there's a new gameplay element that will let you win that doesn't involve the health gauge [or ring-outs]"

My guess: DODOS. If they look at the characters for too long, they hypnotize them.
