This is for the posting of random art pieces you've done. Theme? Absolutely anything! Hence the random. For we cannot dine on video games and cartoons alone.

I'll start this travesty:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j111/moodymanticore/smartin_inkpreview.jpg

A friend and I got talking about old school comedy, the sort that was on record albums. We got on Steve Martin and I wound up doing a caricature of the original Mr. Happy Feet.

hey sheana, who were your inspirations? beacause your style reminds me of someone but I can't place my finger on it.

Sheana
06-15-2007, 03:24 PM
It's not so obvious in this pic, but my biggest art style inspiration would be Bruce Timm, probably. I watched a lot of Batman 'toons and copied his artwork as a young'un, heh.

Can't really think of who else to list. Maybe from the various things I watched, I watched a lot of different cartoons when younger. Jeff Smith probably played a part in things too.

I like how bendy Mr. Martin looks. Also, I'm suddenly compelled to watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

Just a reminder, but this isn't just my thread. Anybody can post anything they've done in here.

Unless everybody would prefer a whole bunch of different threads for different things? Then I'll change the topic.

I made these pictures when I was bored, and I've been waiting for an opportunity to show them off.

First, an artsy-fartsy type sketch:

Second, an attempt at a calming, soothing drawing:

Healy

Well, you're supposed to be behind Philliam, but I added you in late, so it doesn't look right. As for the astral projection, that's actually supposed to be a spectre of Parish himself (gasp!), but I couldn't draw him with the menace I wanted him to have, and it doesn't look like him at all, frankly, so I can see why you'd be confused.

Oh man, I had an art show this weekend (a group show) and I did really well. By the time I got to the opening reception I had already sold most of my pieces. I make collages, but they're dimensional like dioramas, you can't really see it in the photos unfortunately.

I had two big ones (24"x24"), a medium one, and a handful of tiny ones (2"x3", not pictured)
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o52/KateCastoro/19WIMMIN03.jpg

This one sold for 800 dollars! How awesome is that??
http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o52/KateCastoro/19WIMMIN02.jpg

A close up. The people who bought it were getting as a wedding present for some friends. I titled it "March from the Gates of Hell," so I guess they've got a pretty good sense of humor. These are the only photos I have of it, though. Sucks.

I probably shouldn't foist this onto the board, but I'm in a giving mood. I started trying to draw realistically about two days ago. This is the first attempt I've made and it's pretty cheap. I mean, I didn't even bother to erase the graph lines.

DarkBlueFlannel
06-27-2007, 02:47 PM
I don't actually think it's a bad job. I'm quite pleased with the outcome. The whole "cheapness" comment was just the negative effect of two contiguous semesters of (abstract) figure drawing.

Does sprite art count? I've been dabbling in it on and off for a while, but here's a recent tileset that I had started on and have since dropped. I've been doing other things.

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z317/Gredlen/Untitled-1.jpg

There's definitely a few things that I need to work on there. I'll come back to it someday, but probably not too soon.

This is something else I had been doing previously:

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z317/Gredlen/GenericaMockup.png

Some friends and I have been sort of working on an old-school RPG.

And this, my first serious effort at spriting, predates both of those and will likely never be finished:

Gredlen: spiffy.

I quite like the first one. The only odd thing that springs to mind is that the objects seem to be a bit small in relation to the size of the room (or vice-versa).

I presume the second one is intentionally very Dragon Quest. Especially the 2-3 colors per NPC sprite restriction.

I did a little bit of tile-based game creation back in the day, but it was all in black and white. I really need to rescue some of that material out of the long-defunct HyperCard format it's in.

So, remember when I drew a picture of Simon Belmont when Castlevania was the fun club alternate? It turned out pretty good, and I believe Kishi praised it (In a sort of backhanded way, not that I blame him). So, when Chrono Trigger made the Fun Club RPG of the month, I decided to try and see if I could bring back some of the magic of my last Fun Club picture.

I failed. Miserably.

Okay, I want to start drawing comics but I have never ever inked in my life so here's my real first attempt.

This was done with staedtler pigment liner which are a lot like those micron pens.

http://i146.photobucket.com/albums/r260/philliamahn/img074.gif

I'm going to redraw this next with the pilot precise pens and see how it looks.

I seriously want any criticisms or suggestions from ya'll, especially the ones gifted with the magic of inking.

Mightyblue
09-22-2007, 02:24 PM
Okay, one, that's awesome, and two, you did a fairly good job on the inking. The doghair on the bottom open space on the left and the two bottom right panels doesn't really look all that good, but I'm not entirely sure how you'd go about fixing that.

Based on one of my favorite xkcd strips:
http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/substitute.png

It's a graphical answer to number one, which I calculated because I was bored. A sent an email to Munroe with a detailed answer. The graph should be linear, but I forgot I have MS Excel so I did it in MS Paint.

Human error.

Hint: You could run, under the best unmentioned conditions possible, for about .57 seconds before being devoured; you would run a distance of approximately 3.42 meters before meeting your horrible death.

Oh nice. I like the RE one especially. There's lots of stuff going on, very dramatic, and it's got nice atmosphere with the simple background gradients. My one beef with that drawing is her hair could use more shadow. The color is also a little too bright for the lighting in the picture and stands out. Some shading to make it match the lighting in the rest of the drawing should do the trick.

Thank you very much! While it might be a while before I go back to that drawing and implement some of your suggestions, I just wanted to note that it's nice to get some honest-to-goodness constructive criticism for once. Usually whenever I show someone my work they merely say "That's great!" and offer no advice on what can be done to make it better. While that's nice for the ego, I suppose, it's bad for trying to improve (and I've definitely got lots of room for improvement).

I always wanted to make a Castlevania-like FPS in a world full of undead.
Picture a non-magic-saturated Ravenloft, but in the mid-19th century.

Various undead and creatures from the netherworld stalk the land. But, they are an accepted hazard.

Well, then, get Firefox or something! Or petition the webmaster to make the site compatible with Safari! At the very least, register with one of those free comic sites and post more comics of that nature there.

Also: check your PM box.

Anyway, yeah, if I had money, I'd commision Mopinks, too. I'm still (very very slowly) working on the drawing part, but if you want a deliciously saucy story teaser:
I'm Foxy an amazon space explore and I'm looking for new slaves. In my planet there aren't men so we have to procure the semen from other planets.
the commissioner is a really nice guy and he's letting me do whatever I want within his general plot outline, but my smartass friends have unanimously demanded that I leave the dialog as-is. I'm torn!

See, I'd suggest doing it so that you have opportunities to stay true to the original dialog and have an alternate, original version as well. Best of both (hilariously smutty) worlds!
