I would guess that the parents are the ones responsible for that...thing.

Emotional pain, yes.

"Why do I have to get cooties wearing a stupid outfit just because my parents are irresplonsibly overzealous geeks?"

You know, it's one thing to dress yourself as a dumbass, it's child cruelty to make your kid.

those kids are going to look at this picture and then kill themselves

It took me a moment to fully grasp what I was looking at.

That's awful.

Know what I wonder? Are those two bother and sister, because finding TWO sets of parents that would do that to their kids would very improbable.

But Daddy, we don't want to wear leather anymore!"

A travesty.

She should be wearing the FFX outfit, not the X-2 one. I mean, if we were being strict about it.

Normally I'd agree, but then I saw this at Otakon 2005:

Y'know, if attractive and hot ch...*cough*ladies want to dress as scantily clad heroines and moe moe idols, then all the power to em. I'll just look at the photos and act all snobby.

The kids thing, not so much. That young man looks like he's in pain though, I'll agree with that.

I'm really glad I can't see the front of the little girl's costume in the first picture because if I could I think I'd have to wash out my eyes with bleach. I'm just going to pray her parents had the good sense to dress her in a normal top.

When I first looked at this, I thought, "She took that in her bathroom, I bet." then I actually looked at the photograph. That IS a roll of toilet paper in the bottom left corner.

I feel slightly vindicated. Slightly.

In other words, this is a photo taken right before her and her boyfriend played some "blitzball" in the tub?

NOBODY understands the rules to that game, so if they're really as geeky as the costume might suggest... it should be a very authentic experience.

Or maybe it was just me. I tried everything I could, but I was never able to score. I even looked online for tips, but I just don't know what to do with those blue, lumpy balls.

I haven't seen a lot of cosplay, I don't gravitate toward it because I'm not a participant, but the more I see the more I am convinced of one thing. It's not always the costumes that look terrible, sometimes it's just really poor photography.

I guess the costumes are designed be seen in person.

As someone who has been to a few conventions, in many cases I'd respond to that statement with, "Sweet Christ, No!"

Seriously, between bad costumes and people who just weren't meant for the costume they're wearing (see: all of them), real life cosplay can be pretty horrifying.

Yeah, but I've seen plenty of attractive Japanese women cosplay, mostly Air Gear characters oddly enough. Well, I hope they're women anyway.

Man-Faye is hot and you know it!

Only in your mind, bungle, only in your mind.

From what I've seen of cosplay, if you have the time, money and body, some of the costumes are really great.

For example, this woman does it right (http://http://www.adellacosplay.com/cosplay/gallery/C2/aeris/).

But Sailor Bubba-Moon is one of those travesties that should be found and beaten to death. As soon as possible in fact.

I've seen some very good cosplay and some very bad cosplay (speaking of which, I really need to get those photos I took at Acen last month off my camera). I think the keys to good cosplay are:

a) Know how to frickin' sew/build things

b) If you going to be human, pick someone you resemble slightly. Actually, for this you don't even need good skills with a needle. I sadly did not get a picture but I met a really good Shaun from Shaun of the Dead cosplayer at Acen this year. He was just wearing a white button up shirt, a plastic name tag, and a red spot staining the corner of one of the shirt's breast pockets. Really simple but it worked great because the guy really looked like Simon Pegg.

c) Or if you're not good lookin' pick a costume that has distinctive features that will draw people's attention away from your lesser qualities.

d) Know how to sew/build props

Last year at Otakon, a fat Asian kid dressed up as E. Honda. It was awesome.
