View Full Version : Everyone is turning into assholes

Seriously people, what's the deal? Trolls are an inevitable fact of the internet, but when did so many regulars turn into raving psychopaths?

I've compacted a bunch of forums so it's easier to keep a watchful eye on you people and administer punches as necessary. I do not have time for babysitting.

So, did anyone else read that and think "I hope he doesn't mean me?"

You don't mean me, do you? Maybe I was too harsh on Sonic...

Yeah, but I figured it would just annoy everyone if I posted it, since I usually post that sort of thing.

Hey, Bioware's helping him shape back up! We should wait and give him a fair shot first.

It's true. Besides your avatar, I've started to recognize you as that guy who thinks everyone hates him.

I have sensed of overall air of trollishness since the new forums went up. I almost mentioned it in The Blamed One's lament thread (http://www.gamespite.net/talkingtime/showthread.php?t=184) awhile back, but I didn't want to rock the boat and potentially stir up more trouble. Plus I figured that maybe it was just me.

That being said, I really haven't seen it coming from our usual main crowd. The forum switch let some people in that have since chosen to be as combative as possible with the rest of us.

I do get a feeling that the new forums seem tenser. I remember the old forums being a bit more laid back. Tempers seem to run higher and I think people as a whole are taking other people's posts just a little too seriously.

After hearing the "everyone's turning into assholes", I got really self-conscious and started thinking about everything I've posted, but I don't antagonize anyone, I think. I'm pretty sure things will cool down in a bit.

I know I've enjoyed the discussion, shivam. But I do get the feeling he means me, at least in part. But then, I feel like that even when I'm not discussing religion on the internet. So, am I to drawn, quartered, and buried at the crossroads for my transgressions?

i have my suspicions about who he means, but thats not for us to guess at. who can know the mind of ToastyGod? certainly not us who toil beneath his greatness.

It's probably best not to ask for names to be named or to worry that he's specifically referencing you. Let's just all take this as an opportunitiy to think about ways we've been jerks to other people and do better. Naming names would just cause more unnecessary drama, which is supposed to be antithetical to Talking Time.

Let's all just be nice again. If we made it out of that godforsaken auto-jumping argument alive, we can deal with anything.

He means me, but I think my random bouts of perceived assholeness are why you guys keep me around. You know the trolls will seek me out, and then we'll all be on one team, and you'll like me again.

"Hey, can you cut my forum into four pieces instead of eight? I'm not sure if I can mod eight."

It makes more sense than I want to think it does, but still...

Merus
07-02-2007, 12:37 AM
Funny, I was sure he meant me, but then I remembered that I started being short with people because I got the impression that half the guys here were a) waaaaaaay into games and b) short with people who weren't into the same sorts of games they were after Tomm ripped into me for not really liking the Metal Gear Scripts. Admittedly, I said I didn't like them by flipping them off, but I thought that was the done thing here?

So my thought processes reading this page were 'he's probably referring, at least in part, to me' right up until I got to Tomm's post, where I suddenly backflipped to 'no, wait, he probably means Tomm'. Which is only showing up my biases!

I suspect I shall have to find a new defense for liking things that others do not and vice versa. I will probably just laugh it off and refer to the other joker as an 'internet cool guy' as a kind of secret code for my rage. I probably can't do anything about flippantly dismissing things that others feel differently about other than not doing it myself, I guess.

Talking Time is the cool place to hang out. You can find most of the cool people there. In Talking Time you can just chill and do whatever and totally relax. "Take it easy" is the Talking Time motto, for example, that's how laid back it is there. Show up if you want to have a good time. Another good reason to show up is if you want to hang out with friends.

Either way, I think you should edit the title to, "Everyone is turning into assholes except Calorie Mate, who is awesome."

Parish

Here is how not to be an asshole:

1. Don't take differing opinion as personal attacks
2. Don't turn statements of opinion into personal attacks
3. Enjoy

Basically all I'm asking is that this can be a quiet, sane place on the Internet. It my only aspiration with this forum.

Man, have I been contributing to the problem? Maybe I've just been battle-hardened by less friendly interweb hangouts. I dunno.

I will try to be nicer from now on.

Quiet is easy... it's the "sane" part that's tough. My own message board is lucky to get one post per day, and that's including the usual herbal Viagra spams.
