Guess this is as good a time to start as any. Off we go...

For the shake of sheer perversity, I've decided to start the game on "Hard", instead of my preferred method of starting an easy game and then working up through the levels.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/2111/sles0151407052008014216pc6.png

Welcome to beautiful Silent Hill, folks! Weather is expected to be mostly foggy, with spells of falling ash and occasional periods of suffocating darkness. Enjoy your stay!

http://img265.imageshack.us/img265/342/sles0151407052008014439ms1.png

As the game begins, Harry has just crashed his SUV after being startled by the appearance of a teenage girl who is the exact double of his adopted seven-year-old daughter(it's a little complicated). Now Harry wakes to find himself stranded in this strangely deserted resort town, with his daughter nowhere to be seen.

http://img354.imageshack.us/img354/2318/sles0151407052008014448cl1.png

This is what's stopping us from just getting the hell out of here, by the way - a zonking great wall of impenetrable rock. Never mind, let's take a look around see what else we can find...

http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3848/sles0151407052008014531qg8.png

It's a convenience store, and it's open! However, the game doesn't want you to go there yet, so if you try and enter, Harry will suddenly hear footsteps and go racing off in the other direction.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/6140/sles0151407052008014555oa6.png

Harry spies the distant figure of a little girl who bears a striking resemblance to his daughter. But when he calls out, she immediately runs off into the fog, forcing you to give chase. Evidently, Harry has never seen Don't Look Now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpOL_tLvi7w), or he might be a little more cautious.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/7124/sles0151407052008014701ww5.png

"Cheryl" leads us into a gloomy alleyway(who am I kidding, the whole place is kind of gloomy) and promptly disappears again. Note the ominous warning sign, a little hint of what to expect later on.

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/6983/sles0151407052008014739xp9.png

Somehow, I don't think Jesus can help us with this one.

http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/1769/sles0151407052008014836ns6.png

As you progress down the alley, you'll notice it's getting rapidly darker, and at the same time Akira Yamaoka's music is getting increasingly noisy and threatening, indicating some very bad shit is about to go down.

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/8760/sles0151407052008144409xj2.png

Things just get more and more disturbing, until finally...[tbc]*

You have been eviscerated by a gang of mutated razor-clawed dwarves.

You are dead.

Would you like to play again(y/n)?

This is the only other "let's play" thread in which i've never beaten the game being played (the other is X-com). Back when Silent Hill came out I just assumed it was some crappy Resident Evil rip off and never bothered to even give it a rental (my mistake). All the other threads I follow for the tingly nostalgia feelings they produce, but i'm generally curious/interested in seeing where this and the X-com playthrough take me.

I fully believe this is a game that will flourish as an LP thread. Less folks played the original than its sequels and the game's atmosphere is ripe for screenshotting.

Go Silent Hill 1!

I was just reading a Silent Hill 2 LP the other day, since I'm too much of a wuss to actually play the game. So this is pretty timely!

I notice this is the PAL release of the game. The alley creatures are the clawed things instead of the grey children found in the American release. Also, I don't think Harry says "Jesus" in the American version.

Anyway, this is my favorite Silent Hill. To me it's the creepiest, and the load of horror movie/book references hidden throughout are great.

I'm excited about this, since it's the only Silent Hill (on consoles) that I haven't played. I did read a synopsis before playing 3, but I'm quite curious about the imagery in the original.

This is correct, the grey children were taken out of the European version altogether. I think the rationale given was that incidents like the Dunblane shootings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunblane_massacre) were still fresh in people's memories at the time, and thus it might seem insensitive to release a game in which you have to go through a school blasting child-like creatures with a shotgun.

I'm interested in this LP. I only beat this game once, where I wandered aimlessly and spent a lot of time trying to figure out where the hell I should be. And every time I got to a new event, I got a "Man, you're slow"-ish message. Dunno if that would have happened anyway, but I didn't feel like playing the game again to improve.

Are you planning on imposing any other challenges or restrictions on yourself, besides Hard Mode?

Good question. I was thinking of doing a "melee weapons only" run, but there are certain places where guns are your only option(the school basement boss, for example), which would make that kind of game impossible. To be honest, I think this difficulty level is probably challenging enough when played without the bonuses you get from beating the two previous levels first. So I'll probably just stick with a normal game.

You should put together a separate text file first in like notepad or something. Also I had no idea they changed the actual monsters for the PAL version! I am curious about other changes, like was the default blood color green or some such? I know that has been done for some PAL versions of games too.

Edit: Haw, now i'm gonna play through this game.

He says "What the...? What is it?" at the carcas.

Huh. Radio. Whats going on with that radio?

Pheeel
05-10-2008, 04:25 PM
There's is an option in the "secret" menu to change the blood colour, but it's set to red by default.

Anyway, on with the game!

Previously on Silent Hill:
Our Hero, Harry Mason, met his untimely death at the hands of a mob of mutant midgets. But all is not quite as it seems...

http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/6295/sles0151407052008015032xi5.png

Harry wakes in a nearby cafe, with a severe headache and a surprising absence of stab wounds. But wait, isn't that Cameron Diaz dressed as a sexy policewoman?

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/2527/sles0151407052008015040jp1.png

No, of course not, silly! It's plucky local gal Cybil Bennett, who's just dropped in from the next town over to investigate strange goings on in Silent Hill, and is now trapped here with us. Lucky her.

http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/8954/sles0151407052008015107ae4.png

As a(vaguely) interesting sidenote I remember reading somewhere that in an earlier version of the game, Cybil was going to be playable character in a separate scenario(a la Chris & Jill in Resident Evil), but the final game was scaled back so only Harry's scenario was included. There's a few clues to suggest this within the game, but further proof is the Japan-only "Silent Hill Play Novel", a GBA release which included different scenarios for Harry and Cybil. There's a translation on Gamefaqs if you're curious.

Anyway, a conversation ensues which ends with Cybil determining that you are a complete wuss and giving you her gun.

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/8142/sles0151407052008015340qb1.png

Ow, I seem to've been poked in the eye by a big signpost with "MASSIVE FORESHADOWING" written on it. What could this mean?

http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/7464/sles0151407052008015545je9.png

Cybil goes off to pursue her own investigation, leaving Harry to resume the search for his daughter. Finally you're back in control again, so it's time to collect the goodies helpfully left behind on the counter-top. There's some health drinks, a town map, a flashlight and a kitchen knife. The knife is the archetypically useless survival horror weapon, but we'll be getting a better melee weapon very soon.

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/3912/sles0151407052008015632ia5.png

Now, remembering to equip the gun *first*, it's time to leave the safety of the cafe. But no sooner is your hand on the door, than a shrill ringing noise begins emanating from the tiny portable radio you decided not pick up earlier on. Get used to this noise, as you'll be hearing it an awful lot.

http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/8953/sles0151407052008015822bb2.png

Uh?

http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/7070/sles0151407052008015848fq4.png

We'll be forced to use five of our precious bullets to take this bastard out, after which Harry will finally suss out that something's not quite right here. As ammo is pretty scarce at this stage, we're going to spend a lot of time running away from things from now on.

His delivery of the radio line is like my favorite game quote ever. Now I havent played in like six years and i'm trying to puzzle out what to do in the last segment of town to get all the stuff for the good ending but I can't seem to remember.

Also something curious is happening, this game is scaring me! Good to know it never quite gets old. Just finishing the sewers really drove it home, but i'll let pheeel cover it.

Yes! I tried and failed to get a screengrab of that. It's one of those neat little things you almost always forget about until it's too late.

God, those sewers. That section really bothered me for some reason. I remember having a lingering sense of claustrophobia afterwards which was hard to shake. Interesting to see if the effect is still the same this time...

I've also noticed that the school seems to be the breaking point for folks who refuse to continue playing/watching the game.

Of course, it is the first instance of reality shifting into "industrial nightmare" mode, so that's probably a lot of it. Or maybe it's the large, pitch-dark hallways with herds of knife-wielding midgets. Brr.

Study, Dammit! (http://www.stephenking.com/assets/gallery_images/Study-Dammit.gif)

The "Study, Dammit" poster in the diner is based on this real poster. That's Stephen King posing with the shotgun.

Welcome, watchers! When last we met, young Harry had woken up safe and well after his alleyway encounter, met a nice lady who gifted him with a mighty weapon and was rather surprised by the appearance of a flying reptile. And now, the quest continues...

http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/7209/sles0151407052008020008sa7.png

Harry wants to go back to the alley to look for clues, but we have a couple of errands to run. First, we're going back to that convenience store we saw at the start of the game.

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/1305/sles0151407052008020414yy2.png

Caution, team! Another of those Flapping Bastards(do they have an official name?) is snacking over in the corner, but if you're careful it won't notice you. These creatures are best avoided in general, as they attack quite viciously and you don't want to be wasting time and health fighting them unless it's unavoidable.

http://img505.imageshack.us/img505/6323/sles0151407052008020425ey3.png

Inside, there's some health items and a save point. If you get a Good+ ending, a very exciting extra special bonus item can be also found here. But not yet. Now, exiting the store and heading left(run to avoid the monster), head all the way to end of Finney Street, to the point where the road ends in a gaping chasm.

http://img67.imageshack.us/img67/1323/sles0151407052008020821yi2.png

In the boot of this police car is the "Key Of Lion", the first of three keys you'll need to open the back door of the house in Levin Street. There's a map in the house itself telling you where the keys are, but we're going to save time by picking them up beforehand.

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/4027/sles0151412052008212557op0.png

Next is the Key Of Woodman, which is behind this gate in the alley between Finney and Matheson.

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/9644/sles0151412052008212623fw8.png

Sadly, you never get to find out who was playing b-ball with a severed dog's head. It probably just seemed like a cool idea at the time.

http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/2852/sles0151412052008212957fu3.png

Ellroy Street seems like another dead end at first, but this handy tree branch looks as if it might lead somewhere.

http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8807/sles0151412052008213033no2.png

Now we're all keyed up, it's time to head back to the alleyway off Finney Street that's marked on the map.[tbc]

Looks like they're called "Night Flutters (http://translatedmemories.com/bookpgs/Pg26-27SH1Creature.jpg)."

And man, that bit with the basketball hoop is such a great minor expression of the hellishness of the town. The series could use more of those.

Yeah, I mean it has the most of "the town", including a number of buildings and little vignettes hidden away here and there and you feel like you found a creepy little treasure when you stumble upon them. There are only a couple things like that in 2, and there are none in 3 and 4.

The save points are note pads. Harry says he better record what's happening to him in case it is useful to someone else later.

Sorry about the horrendously slow updates for this. I've got nothing to blame but my own laziness, really. That and the fact that I've spent most of my time on Silent Hill 4, which makes coming back to the beginning seem very odd.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_07052008_021637_0791.png

Anyway, we're back at the alley where we last saw Cheryl, now patrolled by these skinless dogs(the presence of which is indicated on the radio by a distinct crackling noise). Like most nasties in Silent Hill they can be avoided with care, but I generally prefer to take them out, as on this difficulty they can do serious damage to your health. As demonstrated by this grab of an earlier game which ended rather prematurely.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_07052008_021333_0135.png

Sometimes an extra one appears behind the "Beware Of Dog" gate just to fuck with you, but it doesn't happen every time. So I'm usually a bit edgy at this point.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_12052008_211427_0906-1.png

The clue suggests we resume our search for Cheryl at the Midwich Elementary School, but all access to Midwich Street is cut off by yet more gaping chasms. But hang on, what are all these bloodied sheets of notepaper doing here?

"DOG HOUSE - LEVIN STREET". Can this be another clue? What can it mean? Only one way to find out...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_12052008_211626_0265-1.png

More dogs are skulking about in Levin Street, and they seem to be concerned with one house in particular. Let's take a closer look.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_12052008_211708_0656.png

Score! Incidentally, you can't pick up this key until you've read the note telling you where it is. Silent Hill's linearity can sometimes be frustrating in this respect. Now, unlock the front door and get inside quickly before you get turned into a giant chew toy.

Real men only use The Pipe(R) to administer violent retribution to hapless hellspawn. That is, when they aren't running for their girly lives.

Remember those three "Wizard Of Oz" themed novelty keys we went to the trouble of collecting right at the start of the game? Well it turns out they just happen to unlock this particular door, which means we've save a hell of a lot of time and effort which would've been spent running all the way back to the other side of town to pick them up. *smug smiley face*

And at this point things to start get really fucked up. I admit that use of this term is slightly redundant in Silent Hill where things being fucked up is more or less the status quo, but I still felt it required an animated gif to indicate just how serious the state of fuckedupedness is.

Ignore the scary music, let's take a moment to enjoy this pretty lighting effect. Mmmmm. But please don't draw attention to the fact that Harry doesn't actually have a shadow, it'll only make him feel insecure.

The following sequence involves lots and lots of running, as we try to make it all the way to the school without Harry getting his face ripped off.

Oh, thank god for that. Unfortunately this sense of relief is only temporary, as pretty soon Harry is going to wish he was back outside with the friendly face-chewing doggies.

Next: Out of the frying pan, into the SCHOOL!

Indeed, I'm sure whatever's in there will be teaching him a listen he'll not forget.

Uuuuupdate! Your commentary is way better than what was going through my head when I played the game through last weekend! Also I'm sorry your favorite weapon is wrong. It's really the Emergency Hammer.

I think it's about time I revived this. I've left poor Harry been stranded in the entrance of the school since May, and I can't stand the guilt any longer.

RISE FROM YOUR GWAVE!

We're back, and not before time! Our last update of some six months ago saw Harry Mason entering the Midwich Elementary School following a vague series of clues as to the location of his missing daughter Cheryl.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_17052008_123534_0812.png

Harry's footsteps echo hollowly on the wooden floors as he catches his breath in the sudden eerie stillness of the deserted building. The school is built around a large open courtyard, surrounded by four outer corridors with rooms leading off on all sides, as this map I stole from google reveals:

http://www.psxzone.opalnet.pl/silenthill/sh_data/mes_1f.jpg

At the moment the doors to the east and west corridors are both locked, so the only way onward is to cross the courtyard. But let's check out the other two rooms first, starting with the infirmary.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_17052008_123355_0671.png

The infirmary is a "safe" room where we can use a diary and pick up a few supplies. Nothing else to do here except soak in the atmosphere and gird our loins for the horrors that inevitably await.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_03112008_213743_0140.png

On the other side of the entrance is a reception area and teacher's lounge. A whole bunch of cryptic clues are scattered around here, each written in blood. Either someone has a macabre sense of humour, or perhaps they were just really short of pens that day.

Examining the teachers list reveals Midwich Elementary has three members of Sonic Youth on the staff. This most random of pop culture references will have some relevance later on, though. Let's see what else we can find.

...Hang on, "limited to five images?" What the hell? I guess I must've missed that meeting.

Obviously it's difficult to glean much from these yet, so all we can do is move on and hope it'll all make sense later(it will, mostly).

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_03112008_215331_0703.png

The teacher's lounge. There's not a hell of a lot here either, except for some ammo and this rather peculiar wall hanging, with it's lovely "suspended corpse" motif.

Okay, we've put it off long enough. Time to venture out into the courtyard and see what's waiting for us on the other side...

I'm glad to see that the corpse of this LP has been reanimated. An unfinished Let's Play is a sad creature.

Although I already went and played through the game for the first time last month. Oh well, you might go for the story bits I skipped over without realizing it. Next playthrough I'm using a FAQ.

And what's this? A sealed door with two circular identations on either side. What is this, Resident Evil? Okay, I guess not, but if I have to push any statues I'm going home right now.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_03112008_230747_0828.png

And look! A clock with it's hand frozen at 10. Why, I'll wager this relates to the mysterious clues we saw not five minutes ago. Let's see...10 O'Clock - Alchemy Lab...Call me crazy, but I have a hunch we should be looking for a laboratory of some kind.

But now Harry must ready himself for action as the radio is ringing up a storm, indicating the presence of something short, sharp and bloodthirsty.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_03112008_230819_0531.png

As we've mentioned before, the "teddy bear" enemies are a substitute in the European version of the game for the Grey Children, which are completely absent here. These fellas are fairly easy to deal with as long as you don't let them get too close, although they can give you some serious trouble if they attack in groups of three or more, as we will see later.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_03112008_230921_0546.png

This one shouldn't give us any bother at all. Also, it seems I was wrong about ammo being scarce, as I've managed to acquire absolutely loads of it.

Yeah, the creepiness factor is never really matched in another Silent Hill. But they do really build and perfect the atmosphere with future games, so it's sort of an equal trade.

While all of Silent Hill scares the hell out of me, it's always been the school that does it the most. Especially the last part of the area. That's how you do psychological horror, video games!

Oh...

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_05112008_202439_0468.png

...bother.

The second you enter the rear corridor, two creatures(I believe "mumblers" are the official name) attempt to trap you by approaching from either side. The best thing to do is try and run round and position yourself so your back's against the wall and they're both in front of you.

With both pointy-fingered foes dealt with, it's time to check out the other rooms on this side("Storage" and "Hall", and what looks like a rear lobby according to the map).

"Storage" is permanently locked, so that's a dead loss. Let's try door number two:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_17052008_123921_0468.png

The radio comes on at this point, immediately getting our guard up, but don't worry. It's just one of these little baby ghosts. They can't actually hurt you and just stumble around squeaking. I always think they're quite sweet, myself. There's nothing to do here except pick up some ammo and move on.

Both the Hall and East Corridors are barred to our progress, so it's time to head west.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/Philip_Alderman/SLES_01514_05112008_211017_0234.png

This corridor has precisely bugger all of interest. You can't get into the two teacher's rooms, and in fact the only thing you can do here is unlock the south corridor leading back to the infirmary. The Men's Room has a Mumbler in it, but there's nothing else to find and you might as well save your bullets.

So instead, let's take the stairs.

Couple of questions. First, which ending are you planning to do here?

Second, I've been playing the game through and it's been a bit weird. For one, the moth boss didn't move at all. It literally just floated in the air, occasionally launching poison at me and stinging, letting me fill it with lead. Also, one of the things I missed with the big larvae worm thing was the hunting rifle; I was too preoccupied with killing the thing to really notice it. Is there a chance to get it later, or is it one of those Lost Forever deals?

I think it's lost forever but you also really don't need it to finish the game. I've never gotten it on any of my playthroughs.

I never got to play the first Silent Hill, I oddly started the series off with number 3. It looks pretty good so far though, I may have to find it someday online.
