View Full Version : Let's Play: Kagero: Deception II

Through the brutal use of brainwashing, the blue-skinned Timenoids had for centuries ruthlessly dominated their inferior human counterparts. Immortal in their lifespans and ingenious in their plans, the Timenoids had created armies of unknowing human drones to wage war against the only race that possessed the power to end their reign of terror, and their lives – the human.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/001.jpg

The first game in this series, “Tecmo’s Deception: Invitation to Darkness” was released for the Playstation in 1996. The primary gameplay involved setting traps to capture or kill the foolish intruders who entered the “Castle of the Damned”. Kagero: Deception II polished up the trap-based premise, but scraps the RPG elements and Satanic theme for a more complex plot involving the immortal (and poorly-named) “Timenoids”.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/002.jpg

Our story begins as the circus arrives at this unnamed town. All the children of the village are entertained, but one child seems particularly entranced.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/003.jpg

You wouldn’t think a creepy clown juggling 3 balls would be that exciting, would you? Well, when everything goes dark, and the balls start glowing and floating, that’s a bit too exciting for my liking, personally. But I’m a big wuss.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/004.jpg

I’ll admit, purple glowing energy orbs are pretty cool, and I know I’d be at least a little curious to see where they were floating off to… But, at what age does an individual develop a self-preservation instinct?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/005.jpg

The TMD are superior to humans in every way.

Eons ago when humans were feral and lived in chaos, the TMD shared their wisdom and ways.

The humans were grateful and respected the TMD for enriching their lives. Thus the TMD gained power naturally.

Most humans were content with their newfound peace and believed it would last forever.

I think I wouldn’t be so annoyed by the term “Timenoid” if it weren’t unnecessarily abbreviated as “TMD” almost all the time.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/006.jpg

King Eclypse: Is there a problem?

Yocal: PANTS is still young. She needs further education.

Yocal: She doesn’t see the value of immortality or of our mission.

King Eclypse: I don’t consider these issues to be problems.

Yocal: If she is not well-educated she will remain a mere human.

King Eclypse: If not now, when? And how can we be sure of her loyalty?

Yocal: It is difficult…

King Eclypse: We won’t know until we put her to use, will we?

Yocal: ….. Yes sir. I will ready her at once, your majesty.

Not visible in the above screenshots is a literal “spike square” behind and to the right of Yocal. At regular intervals, 4 foot tall spikes stab out of the floor, but the resident Timenoids seem to pay no heed.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/007.jpg

We’re finally done with all the backstory the game is going to throw at us for now, and we are brought to the “Intermission” menu.

First things first, let’s check out our trap arsenal.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/008.jpg

The Trap menu leads to a sub-menu that is unworthy of a screenshot. The first choice, “Trap Select” lets us change what traps we have available for the next mission. “Trap Data” shows the map of prerequisites for every trap* in the game. “Trap Make” lets us spend the currency of the game, “Ark,” on new traps. There’s quite a bit of information here between these 3 screenshots, but we can’t do anything just yet without any Ark.

* other than those awarded for specific endings.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/009.jpg

The map the game gives us is pretty small and cluttered - not terribly useful. We can get to this map screen once we’re in the game, so I won’t dwell on it now.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/010.jpg

The Enemy Data screen gives us a preview of who will be coming to visit in each chapter. Some enemies are immune to certain trap-types, but Daar here is just a simple villager.

Now we have a choice. We can fairly easy kill Daar (the Mega Rock alone does more damage than his hp), or we can let him run away. Not all enemies will attempt to flee, but it shouldn’t be hard to scare this guy off. I open the discussion to you, Talking Tyrants! What shall be Daar’s fate?

Next… “Chapter 1: An Innocent Girl”

I played the first game a ton when I was a kid. Designing the mansion was nearly as fun as the traps themselves. It's a shame it took nine (!?!) memory card blocks to save.

I know I've played this one at some point, but I don't remember much of anything about it. Does PANTS have tank controls?

Also, kill that chump. You'd be doing the world a service killing anyone dumb enough to just wander into a place named "Castle of the Damned."

Zithuan

Does PANTS have tank controls?

From the back of the box:
DUAL SHOCK ANALOG CONTROLLER COMPATIBLE! (Vibration Mode only)
It was a little painful getting reacquainted with pre-analog 3d controls: Left/Right turn, L1, R1 strafe.

Also, kill that chump. You'd be doing the world a service killing anyone dumb enough to just wander into a place named "Castle of the Damned."

Actually, "Castle of the Damned" refers to the mansion of the first game. Right now, PANTS is at a castle that, as I recall, is only ever referred to as "the Castle by the Woods" or something similar.

But, yeah. Kill the chump anyway. I mean, what kind of a name is Daar anyway? That's a dumb name.

"Hey I think it'll be a good idea to go into this creepy, abandoned castle in the middle of the woods all by myself!"

Clearly he has no self-preservation instincts and natural selection must do its thang.

I remember playing a demo of this back when it came out. I never could find the actual game though.

Before each mission, there is a scene that usually gives more detail on why the invaders have come. Yocal tries to explain why humans need to be killed and reveals that she summoned poor Daar to his impending death.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/011.jpg

Yocal: We instilled order. They soon grew greedy and revolted.

Yocal: Humans murdered many Timenoids. I can’t say any more.

Yocal: It won’t be easy to kill these humans. But, PANTS.

Yocal: You can do it.

Yocal: I’m confident that you will succeed on your mission.

PANTS: *nods*

PANTS never speaks in any pre or post battle scenes, at most she will silently nod or shake her head no.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/012.jpg

We’ll skip the rest of the game’s brief tutorial, and I’ll cover the basics in just a moment.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/013.jpg

Yocal: PANTS, please take care in battle.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/014.jpg

Finally we get to start playing!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/015.jpg

The very first thing we need to do at the beginning of every mission is look at the map for the enemy locations. Interestingly, Yocal does not show up on the map, even though she is standing right in front of PANTS. Since the game rewards us for dealing damage with traps, and Daar will just wait where he is until we go to meet him….

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/016.jpg

The trap set screen shows a 3d image of the room and everything in it (except Yocal; the red figure is PANTS). Traps generally show the area they can affect, but ceiling traps such as Mega Rock will roll downhill and not give the player any indication of how far it will roll or how fast. These altar steps are a pretty slight incline, but we’re not looking for speed here. The Small Bomb doesn’t have much of a blast radius, but since Yocal isn’t centered on a square, it will do well where it is. We can have 1 of each type of trap (ceiling, wall, floor) in any given room, but they can’t be set on top of existing room devices, and floor and ceiling traps can’t share the same square. e.g. No putting a Mega Rock directly above a Bear Trap.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/017.jpg

After setting the traps, we need to wait for them to charge before they can be used. As you can see, the Mega Rock charges much slower than the other traps.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/018.jpg

Once the traps are set, PANTS makes sure she is not standing in the path of the Mega Rock (just in case), and we unleash the combo, starting with the Arrow Slit.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/019.jpg

The Small Bomb then flings Yocal directly under the square where the Mega Rock is due to land…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/020.jpg

“Initial Trap” refers to a 100 Ark bonus for the first time a trap is successfully used. The Arrow Slit and Small Bomb also had those bonuses, but the traps were set off in rapid succession and the game didn’t keep up with informing us.

Zithuan
06-22-2008, 09:19 PM
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/021.jpg

As Yocal is struggling to her feet, the Arrow Slit has recharged itself, and is ready for another hit. I could have moved the Small Bomb to her new location, but by now her hp is so low that one more hit finishes her off. Once a victim has died, you can’t continue the combo against them. When Yocal “dies” in this chapter, she just disappears. If you attack her without “killing” her, she scolds you and disappears anyway.

The other reason not to use Small Bomb again is because using the same trap more than once in a combo causes it to be worth much less Ark. Because the 2nd Arrow hit was a “Long Range Hit” we still get a worthwhile amount. Also notice that arrows will home in (slightly) on enemies. If you see the earlier screenshot, you know the Arrow Slit trajectory does not line up with where the Mega Rock falls.

Now let’s go deal with Daar.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/022.jpg

That’s… not a yes or no question. I interpret his question to actually be, “The Timenoids called me, but you are here to lead me to them?”

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/023.jpg

We might as well use the other 3 traps we didn’t use against Yocal so we can get the Initial Trap bonus for all 6 starting traps. Slow Gas isn’t a very good trap since Ark is based on damage done – Slow Gas deals no damage so is only worth Ark for the Initial Trap bonus and the combo hit.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/024.jpg

Since Daar is so slow and harmless, I have the luxury of waiting until he is standing in the exact center of where the Bear Trap will hit, giving the “Bull’s Eye” bonus.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/025.jpg

While Daar is flailing helplessly, I wait for the Slow Gas to enter his lungs, then immediately activate the Press Wall to shove him into the nearby pillar.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/026.jpg

The pillar inflicts massive damage and topples over when hit by a trap like Press Wall. Room Device traps also give a very large Ark bonus for using them in a combo.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/027.jpg

And we are left only with Daar’s dying words and his corpse lying in a pool of blood.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/028.jpg

Off to a good start, I’d say.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/029.jpg

Slash: Ask another. I don’t do menial tasks. It’s not my style.

Lilia: Please! ...my husband hasn’t returned yet… I’ll pay anything!

Slash: He hasn’t returned from the castle?!

Lilia: Let me explain…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/030.jpg

Here’s a preview of the next intruder. What shall be his fate, I wonder?

The more important decision – now that we’ve got some Ark, PANTS needs new traps to play with! I may end up regretting this, but I’m going to let you guys decide what traps I should make next.

Place Damage Charge Cost
Attack Wall Wall 10 6 1200
Wall violently thrusts out, throws victims 4 squares away.

Fire Arrow Wall 40 4 1000
Flaming arrow shoots from mask, ignites oil-covered victims.

Magnet Wall 0 8 900
Magnet slips down wall and attracts victims from 2 blocks away.

Flash Bomb Floor 0 4 800
Flash blinds victims standing within 1 block.

Land Mine Floor 40 5 1200
Victim's step triggers mine, blasting victim 2 blocks.

Heavy Claw Floor 25 5 1000
Huge iron blades emerge from floor and pin victim temporarily.

Spike Rock Ceiling 75 9 1800
Spiked rock drops and rolls, crushing victim.

Confuse Gas Ceiling 0 6 600
Gas seeps out, confusing victim.

Vase Ceiling 0 2 400
Vase drops on victim's head, temporarily blinding victim.

For comparison, here are the traps we started the game with:

Mega Rock Ceiling 70 9
Rock drops and rolls across floor. Breaks upon impact with victim.

Slow Gas Ceiling 0 5
Gas seeps out, slowing victim.

Arrow Slit Wall 35 3
Arrow shoots from a mask on the wall.

Press Wall Wall 5 4
Wall advances 2 blocks at a time, pushes objects out of its way.

Small Bomb Floor 35 3
Small bomb blows up, knocking victim 2 blocks.

Bear Trap Floor 15 4
Iron blades emerge from floor and pin victim's feet temporarily.

We have 3727 Ark to work with, so we can afford at least 2 new ones. What should we get?

Oh geez I just realized I played a basic version of this type of game recently. The Scroll Cave in Shiren totally works on a similar principle. You could even chain traps together. I quite enjoyed that, so maybe I should check out this obscure genre. Geez I don't think anything like this has been released recently besides Trapt. This is waaay untapped potential.

Did you just kill the tutorial guy?

Yes. Yes I did. No, not really. Next time (Chapter 25) is for real though.

She's the only NPC in the game who doesn't show up on the map, so it isn't obvious that it would even be possible to attack her. Her 100 hp is enough that I didn't even think it was possible to "kill" her for a long while. Attacking Yocal is one of 2 tricks to get extra Ark at the beginning of the game, the other way is sadly incompatible with this Let's Play.

Presumably this will become a little clearer as time goes on, but I'm trying to figure out what the challenge is here. Obviously you want to kill people in awesome ways, and presumably some of them will be smarter than our buddy Daar, but right now this looks remarkably un-fun, so I feel like I must be missing something pretty vital.

The game takes a couple chapters to start getting challenging. In the 2nd chapter (ETA: later tonight) we encounter the first enemy with a weapon, in chapter 3 we get 2 enemies at once, in chapter 4 we get the first enemy with a ranged attack, etc. Later enemies also tend to have immunity to (or the ability to dodge) certain trap-types, and other special abilities (invisibility, teleport) that make them more dangerous.

I wouldn't call Deception II a particularly hard game, but there are certainly some chapters coming up that will probably take me a few tries to succeed.

Could you spoil that for me? It's been years since I tried (futilely) to play through this.

Per request, the new traps created are Magnet, Vase, Land Mine, & Fire Arrow. Unfortunately, 2 of these new traps won’t get used this chapter, but I’ll keep them in mind for the future. Since PANTS can only equip 3 traps for each location, Fire Arrow is replacing Arrow Slit.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/031.jpg

Slash: No.

Slash: If there’s a fight, you’ll just get in my way.

Lilia: …..

Slash: Don’t worry. I’ll do the job for a small sum.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/032.jpg

So that’s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slash_fiction) what his name means! I thought it referred to his sword... well, maybe it still does, I suppose.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/033.jpg

Apparently, PANTS is not a very good liar. (For the record, Slash doesn’t appreciate honesty, either)

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/034.jpg

This mission starts us in the same room as the enemy. Slash is much faster than Daar and will attack if we let him get close enough. Fortunately, there’s a door behind us allowing a tactical retreat, and a chance to see what else this castle has in store.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/035.jpg

By popular request, we have a Vase over the doorway ready to fall on Slash’s head. Magnet and Fire Arrow don’t really combo well with what I have planned, so they will be saved for the next chapter. (The large crate that the Press Wall will smash into contains explosive powder.)

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/036.jpg

As soon as I see his sword poking out, I know he’s ready to have his head covered with my vase. Probably a much bigger helmet than he’s used to.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/037.jpg

He moves a lot slower now, and doesn’t seem to know what to do next, so he clumsily tries to get closer to PANTS, hoping to get lucky I guess.

Once he is on the near side of the Land Mine, we set it off. Since Slash is off-center, he is blasted 2 squares towards us, right where the Press Wall is. Land Mine can be activated in advance, but then Slash would likely have been blown backwards as soon as he stepped on the mined square.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/038.jpg

The Press Wall does negligible damage, but the Powder Box explodes on impact, dealing significant damage and flinging Slash away. Fortunately, PANTS is standing just outside the blast radius; it is very easy to get caught in your own traps if you’re not careful.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/039.jpg

Figuring out where traps will toss victims is one of the keys to getting big combos. The powder box explosion throws Slash 3 squares away, and since the earlier Land Mine blast had put him off center, he ends up lying right next to the door. Small Bomb charges quickly enough (3 seconds) to finish him off and add a 5th hit to the combo.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/040.jpg

Eventually we’ll get more interesting dying words. Early foes seem more incredulous than anything else.

Not as much Ark as last time due to only having a single target to beat up on, but still enough to buy another trap or two.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/043.jpg

As friends of Slash, they probably won’t be in the mood for talking. I’m going to have to kill them, too, methinks.

We may not have a choice of what to do about the next wave of invaders, but new traps have been unlocked by the last round of purchasing.

Gastone: Get a grip, Hawk! You’ll get us both killed too.

Gastone: We’re here to avenge Slash, aren’t we? Get it together!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/045.jpg

As soon as this chapter begins, PANTS hears the sound of a door opening, and looking at the map reveals that she is surrounded. The map doesn’t give any clue which red dot corresponds to which enemy, so we should look to see what we’re dealing with.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/046.jpg

PANTS runs up the stairs to see who just entered the room, and sees the beastly Gastone coming to threaten the young belle.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/047.jpg

So PANTS runs away and into the hall. Hallways are dangerous because traps can’t be set there, but enemies can more easily attack PANTS in the narrow corridor. Hawk takes a swipe as we run by, but we make it past unscathed.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/048.jpg

This is obviously a much more advantageous position; we can dispose of Hawk quickly before Gastone even makes it to this room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/049.jpg

For the record, Vase traps are kind of a pain to use. The timing depends on the victim’s walking speed, and the hit box on a Vase is much smaller than on Rock-type traps. Once Hawk has his hat, he helplessly hobbles ahead. PANTS steps aside to give us a better view for setting off traps.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/050.jpg

Vase traps break as soon as the victim is hit by any other trap, so the Small Bomb is set off almost immediately after the Fire Arrow to continue the combo.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/051.jpg

The final combo hit is this always-on electric chair. “Aerial Hit” is an Ark bonus for midair trap hits, and “Bingo!” means we didn’t overkill our victim at all (very much not the case with Daar or Slash).

I know what you guys are thinking, “We wanted you to set someone on fire! Hawk barely had time to burn!”

Fine.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/052.jpg

One nice thing about the Oil Vase is that it really counts as two different traps. On a miss, it leaves an oil spill that causes an enemy to slip and gain the same flammable property as on a direct hit. The game even gives us another “Initial Trap” bonus for using it this way!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/053.jpg

With Oil in his eyes, Gastone holds his hands close to his face and moves even slower than before…. Until he’s set on fire and starts running straight towards us, and into the path of a land mine. Sadly this isn’t getting us much Ark.

With a little maneuvering around the room, PANTS is able to get Gastone into position for a gruesome death.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/055.jpg

Gastone walks right into the Lumber Saw and amazingly doesn’t die from it. PANTS was standing slightly to one side to make sure Gastone walked at an angle that would result in him eventually landing on the Small Bomb.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/056.jpg

And that’s it for Gastone. Next time an enemy with a ton of hp shows up, I’ll try to set up a big combo instead of just setting him on fire… 3 times.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/057.jpg

King Eclypse: But why do you look so concerned?

King Eclypse: Even if she betrays us, she’s limited to using traps …as you suggested.

Yocal: …..

King Eclypse: What? You aren’t worried about her, are you?

King Eclypse: I understand – we cannot have our own children.

King Eclypse: You think of her as your own child, don’t you?

Yocal: No… I am a Timenoid. I abandoned such feelings long ago.

If Yocal had “such feelings” long ago, then was she not always a Timenoid? Does that mean there’s a way for a human to become a Timenoid? hmmm….

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/058.jpg

Rain: If it’s a retreat, it should be deserted right now.

Gerald: Perfect for a TMD ambush! They’ll never expect us here.

Gerald: Agreed. Let’s designate this castle as our battle site.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/059.jpg

In retrospect, I wish I’d gotten the death blow on Gastone with the Lumber Saw, just because it would sound cooler.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/060.jpg

Next mission, we get 3 opponents! Gerald and Rain are particularly important; killing them or allowing them to go free greatly alters many of the upcoming chapters. Killing them now, however, does not prevent us from getting any of the endings.

Place Damage Charge Cost
Attack Wall Wall 10 6 1200
Wall violently thrusts out, throws victims 4 squares away.

Triple Arrow Wall 26 5 2600
Three arrows shoot in sequence from mask on the wall.

Rolling Bomb Wall 70 6 2200
Bomb rolls out from mask and blows up victim.

Power Magnet Wall 0 10 2400
Super Magnet attracts victims from 5 blocks away.

Flash Bomb Floor 0 4 800
Flash blinds victims standing within 1 block.

Heavy Claw Floor 25 5 1000
Huge iron blades emerge from floor and pin victim temporarily.

Spring Floor Floor 15 6 2900
Floor springs out, throwing victim 4 blocks. (you can aim)

Spike Rock Ceiling 75 9 1800
Spiked rock drops and rolls, crushing victim.

Confuse Gas Ceiling 0 6 600
Gas seeps out, confusing victim.

Lava Vase Ceiling 55 3 2400
Vase drops on victim's head, causing intense injury.

Basin Ceiling 10 2 600
Basin drops upon impact, victim becomes enraged & chases you.

Lava Vase is the only new trap available, but 5121 Ark gives us lots of choices. So in addition to the usual, “what should I buy?” I need to know whether to spare or slaughter Gerald and Rain? (You can’t kill one and let the other go)

Next… “Chapter 4: Tangled Thoughts”

Yes. Chapter 6 takes us to a new castle that's twice as big, and chapter 16 takes us to another location of comparable size.

It looks like Gerald & Rain will live through this chapter, leaving McLord to bear the brunt of the new traps. Update will be sometime late tonight; single opponents don't take long to dispatch and write up, but I won't be able to start working on it for a few hours.

Gerald: Haven’t you heard from Deadmoon yet?

McLord: Nothing concerning plans to kill the respected TMD.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/062.jpg

McLord: What do you mean, you don’t respect the TMD?

McLord: You’re crazy! TMD gave us life! I won’t betray them.

McLord: *walks away and enters the castle*

Gerald: Wait, McLord!

Rain: Gerald.

Rain: That’s strange – why didn’t he know about the mission?

Gerald: Yes … strange.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/063.jpg

McLord: No need to worry, now! I caught you red-handed!

McLord refuses to fight Timenoids, but has no problem bludgeoning a human girl to death for assumed trespassing? As you can see, McLord starts only a few steps away, so we need to immediately escape to another room to come up with a plan.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/064.jpg

McLord has a higher movement speed than Hawk or Slash, and is through the door just as the traps have finished charging. Magnet traps are useful against fast enemies because they cover a fairly large area and don’t require precise timing. The downside is the lack of damage, and that it only counts as a combo hit if the enemy is pulled all the way to the Magnet itself.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/065.jpg

Spring Floor is one of the best traps in the game. The target square for the bladed pendulum is exactly 4 squares away from the wall, but no NPC is stupid enough to walk there of their own accord. Spring Floor is great for placing victims directly in the path of nearly any room device, and I will try not to overuse it, even if it is a regular part of my trap arsenal.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/066.jpg

McLord hasn’t completely stood up by the time the pendulum hits him in the back of the head, so it counts as another combo hit, and knocks him to the side where our newly minted Spike Rock is ready to finish the job.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/067.jpg

Gerard & Rain have only just entered the castle by the time McLord dies, making you wonder what were they doing that took them so long?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/068.jpg

Jeez! Why does everyone jump to conclusions in this game?

Deadmoon: You’ve killed five Timenoids?

Keith: Yes, sir.

Keith: But one of your men, McLord, was killed by a human in the west castle.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/072.jpg

Deadmoon: Of course, you took care of the human who killed McLord, didn’t you?

Keith: No, sir. The mission of the Red Blood is to exterminate the Timenoids. Our mission is not to kill humans.

Keith: That soldier died in vain. He was killed because he disregarded my orders and tried to destroy the human.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/073.jpg

Deadmoon: Then, there is nothing to do.

Keith: I discovered something during the battle.

Keith: Our mission is to exterminate the Timenoid.

Keith: But it seems that your mission, master Deadmoon, is not simply to kill the Timenoids, but to gain control of the country.

Deadmoon: I just don’t want any unnecessary bloodshed. I am a priest, after all.

Keith: Then, why…

Keith: Why is it that you do not hesitate to kill the humans?

*fadeout*

Deadmoon: He’ll pay for this.

Deadmoon: Are you there, Matia?

Matia: Yes.

Deadmoon: You’ve already taken care of all the mercenaries we lent to the Red Blood, haven’t you?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/075.jpg

Deadmoon: Well done.

Deadmoon: We can’t be associated with any Timenoid deaths. We must make it appear that the Red Blood are behind this.

Deadmoon: The mercenaries who didn’t return were killed by a girl at the west castle. We have to take care of her, too.

Matia: What?! Haven’t the Red Blood taken care of the girl… even though they failed the mission?

Deadmoon: That might be part of their strategy. They may be trying to avoid criticism from the humans by letting her live.

Matia: That’s a laugh. How can they expect to avoid criticism from the humans when they’ve murdered so many Timenoids?

Matia: Understood. Let me take care of the girl.

Deadmoon: Good. It’s no problem if the Red Blood accuses me – who’d listen to a killer? But if anyone else betrays me…

Matia: Yes, sir.

Deadmoon: I’ve even lost the ability to pledge my loyalty to the King.

Deadmoon: I’m sure the Kind will keep his promise.

As you can see, this chapter’s wrap up is where the game reveals an actual plot beyond just “kill people”.

The south enemy is closer, so we set up traps right outside the door. Obviously, this is a bad place to stand if the enemy has ranged attacks.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/080.jpg

That is a pretty massive bear trap. By all rights, it should cut Ash in half, but it’s more useful holding him in place for rolling the Spike Rock into him.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/081.jpg

Hmm... Looks like I vastly overestimated this combo’s effectiveness; Ash isn’t even knocked down. PANTS had best run and try again in the next room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/082.jpg

This is inconvenient, I wonder if the Magnet wall will last long enough to catch Hunna, too?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/083.jpg

CRAP! The question I should have asked was, “will the Magnet wall charge fast enough?” No, it won’t. Time to run away some more.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/084.jpg

We might as well set off the Magnet wall before leaving the room, it might catch and slow down Hunna. Fortunately, that happens just before we leave the room, so we can set off the other two traps.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/085.jpg

Being pinned underwater by a giant spiked rock would be a horrifying nightmare that I hope not to have tonight. The game shows you every trap hit, which is nice because often enough you’ll be running away or not in the same room.

You should have thought of that when you saw the room with the electric chair, pendulum blade, and OSHA noncompliant Lumber Saw!

Basin can be a useful trap, but it can also be very dangerous. After getting hit with it, Ash charges towards us, faster than his normal walking speed (I’d estimate 50% faster). Basin can be a fun way to get enemies where you want them, but if the timing on your follow-up trap is wrong, you have to be prepared to flee.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/088.jpg

Ash meets his nemesis the Heavy Claw again, and receives massive blunt force trauma to the head.

Now we wait. Hunna is badly hurt and will slowly hobble towards the exit, while Statz spawns a couple rooms away from us….

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/089.jpg

Next time I cripple an enemy, I’ll try to stand closer to get a better picture of them limping while clutching their midsection. The Basin, of course, changes everything, and she finds the inner strength to run directly towards PANTS and the suspicious bloodstain on the floor in front of her.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/090.jpg

Did I mention Spring Floor is one of my favorite traps?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/091.jpg

Statz seems to want to stay in the altar room, he certainly could have easily outrun Hunna if he was trying to get to PANTS.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/092.jpg

What…?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/093.jpg

Priest Dusk: I’m so sorry, my King.

Priest Dusk: Unfortunately, we’ve yet to identify any of the killers.

Priest Dusk: However, since so many TMD were killed in this attack…

Priest Dusk: …the humans involved must be very powerful.

King Eclypse: Hmm. Maybe it’s the nobleman, Hornstein?

Priest Dusk: It may be Deadmoon. With his involvement the reason is clear.

King Eclypse: They assume we’ll trade immortality for allegiance?!

Priest Dusk: Yes. They obviously don’t understand what that entails.

Priest Dusk: They have some reason to revolt. Maybe that’s it.

King Eclypse: I see.

Priest Dusk: This is only my guess, your majesty, but I believe there may be an attempt on your life by a rebel faction.

Yocal: You must protect the castle and keep it safe.

PANTS: *nods*

Hornstein: So, the news of the massacre was true.

Hornstein: Yes… this is our chance to prove out loyalty to the TMD.

Deadmoon: You could be right.

Hornstein: It’s simple… we catch their murderers, and gain their trust.

Hornstein: Ooops! Don’t repeat that to anyone. It’s just between us.

Deadmoon: …..

Deadmoon: Have you heard news about the murderers?

Hornstein: No, nothing. How about you?

Deadmoon: I don’t think I should say…

Why on earth would Deadmoon broach this subject if he didn’t want to talk about it? And somewhere lines got crossed between the meanings of politically powerful and individually powerful. Plot is not this game’s strong suit.

We’re starting to see some fairly expensive traps, but these later chapters tend to give us more targets for gaining Ark. I’ve never tried farming Ark from self-healers like Deadmoon, but I imagine it could be effective (if tedious). 5075 Ark gives us a few choices here, so what will they be?

When I worked at EBGames, that music video was featured on "EBTV" one month, so every 2 hours... I'd hear the song again. Sadly, that was one of the relatively better songs we had to suffer through.

It was so dumb for Tecmo to change the name from the Japanese original: Kagero II: Dark Illusion. As a fan of the series, working in a game store, and looking at the upcoming releases list on a daily basis, the name "Trapt" didn't even register as anything to care about. It wasn't until the manager's meeting that year, when I found Tecmo's booth and asked if they were ever going to make another Deception game that I found out.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/106.jpg

PANTS starts in the throne room, and it looks like it’s just Deadmoon for now.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/107.jpg

Deadmoon: HAGANE! I will be able to use you, after all.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/108.jpg

Deadmoon’s ranged attack is a homing energy ball that can’t simply be sidestepped. Hagane is a ninja, which means he is the fastest enemy seen so far, can hide like Statz could, and even has a ranged attack.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/109.jpg

PANTS runs to the corner where the Power Magnet is set up, and catches herself and Deadmoon in it. While immobilized, you can still set off traps, so Deadmoon takes a Spring Floor powered trip to the floor spikes in the King’s throne room. Why does he even have those there? I can imagine the king holding court and a random guard or nobleman getting impaled.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/110.jpg

Seeing how slow he is to get up, I realize there’s no point in starting the Spike Rock rolling; a 2nd Floor Spike hit will finish him off. Odd choice of dying words…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/111.jpg

With Hagane’s speed, the best plan is to duck into the foyer, set some traps, and back out to allow time to charge.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/112.jpg

Hagane backflips away from the Spring Floor, landing behind PANTS. Since, Large Explosions are the only surefire way to take out ninjas, the Rolling Bomb was aimed right where he’s going to land. And there’s an adjacent Powder Box.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/113.jpg

PANTS is able to outrun the explosion, but that means she isn’t able to get a good look at the rolling of the bomb, or the double explosion. Oddly, I don’t get the Initial Trap bonus for Rolling Bomb, so I guess I’ll have to use it some more for that reason, too. Ninjas dodge most traps that could put them into a combo, have very low hp and don't live too far into a combo, and have a bad habit of hitting you, negating the “No Damage Clear” bonus. Ninjas are probably the worst opponents for your Ark total at the end of a mission.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/114.jpg

Time to go see what Hornstein is up to. There wasn’t a strong consensus on his fate, but I’m inclined to spare him.... Doesn’t mean I can’t rough him up a bit first though.

So we might as well make sure Hornstein can’t get away.

The coward then starts walking to the front door, despite the back door that he just came through being much closer. *sigh*

Notice Hagane died to a “Large Blast” without giving credit to the Rolling Bomb. I’m going to have to experiment a bit to see how I can get the Initial Trap bonus for that one.

Matia: No. The King wasn’t there. He must have escaped.

Deadmoon: I see. He’s hiding somewhere.

Deadmoon: That means that the King still hasn’t found out who’s been killing the Timenoids.

Matia: No, sir. Actually, your double was killed by the girl at the west castle.

Deadmoon: Is that the girl we’ve kept alive because you said we might need to use her someday?

Matia: Yes, sir. That was my mistake. I never dreamed the girl had connections to the King.

Deadmoon: That’s ok. I’m sure the King’s unaware of my involvement… and besides, no one has died by my hand… I used mercenaries.

Deadmoon: However, I am a bit surprised that she was able to kill my double so easily.

Deadmoon: The Kind could get rid of me so very easily. Which means… he may have been deceiving me all this time. I’m not even sure now whether humans can really become Timenoids.

Matia: Yes, sir. But, who is this girl anyway? Who is she really working for?

Deadmoon: I don’t know.

Deadmoon: The only thing I’m sure of is that she’s nothing but trouble.

Deadmoon: Matia… Can you kill this girl without the doubtness of King?

Matia: Yes, sir. I won’t fail this time.

Deadmoon: I’ll leave it to you.

Deadmoon: I never thought Keith would stop the TMD hunt to find the grail! If the Red Blood could be found I’d pin this on them!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/121.jpg

Ricard: Set the bombs?! I didn’t know that was his duty.

Aria: Shhhh! You’re too loud. Deadmoon might use the bombs in his deal with the King!

Aria: Only Legral himself can deactivate the bombs. Meanwhile it’s business as usual. Understood, Ricard?

Ricard: Understood. I’m to distract the girl. But, I don’t understand why all this is necessary.

Aria: Deadmoon’s double and Hagane were killed.

Aria: You’d better use someone mighty tough to handle her.

No lengthy plot exposition this time! In fact, I only transcribed a single line of dialogue for this entry.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/124.jpg

Remember (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=201255&postcount=14) when I said we need to check the map at the beginning of each mission? This is a good example why. If I run after Ricard, I’ll likely encounter Aria in the hallway.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/125.jpg

I have this new Lava Vase, and the enemies this chapter are all either fast enough to dodge it, or immune to bomb-type traps (which I think this might count as). I go ahead and use the same type of strategy that worked on Deadmoon, to see if we can’t get a Vase on Aria’s head while we’re both being pulled by the Power Magnet.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/126.jpg

How disappointing. Even though it registered as a “Bull’s Eye” hit, no vase on her head. I guess Magnet + Vase doesn’t work as a combo.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/127.jpg

Aria can’t get pulled against the Magnet (and thus have it count as a hit) since PANTS is in the way. I go ahead and set off the Heavy Claw that magically only hits her, even though we’re both in the same square. I think Bear Trap style traps would do the same if two enemies were on the same square.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/128.jpg

Wounded, Aria slowly approaches to try again with the attack, but she is too slow to dodge the second Lava Vase attack. Incidentally, seeing the Lava Vase in action convinces me that I don’t think I’ve ever actually used it before. Also, that’s a pretty good amount of Ark for a non-combo trap hit with no other bonuses.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/129.jpg

As will be the pattern for most of the rest of the game, as one enemy dies, another shows up. Looks like Ricard is hiding somewhere. Jerk.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/130.jpg

Ricard was hiding behind the Powder Box in the foyer, and flees into the throne room as soon as he saw me. Whatever, it’s easiest to first deal with the enemies who don’t run.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/131.jpg

Legral stops under the Lava Vase trap to roll a poison gas grenade at us. The good news is that he's not immune to it like I feared he might be, the bad news is we both hit each other. “SICK” is your standard damage-over-time status effect that goes away after a little while. There goes the 500 Ark for No Damage Clear.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/132.jpg

Since the Lava Vase does act like other Vase traps in compelling the target to walk forward, you guys know what happens next – Spring Floor into those Floor Spikes. The spikes impaling him as he flies over them is worth an obscene amount of Ark. I don’t mind taking that damage so much anymore.

You can't have 2 floor traps placed at once, so unless the 2nd Floor trap charges very quickly (Spring Floor takes 6 seconds), it'd be nearly impossible to combine the two.

Another chapter with very little plot before the action. I’m ok with that!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/141.jpg

This is an interesting room, but not where we want to be right now. Whenever the game starts you in the same room as an opponent, it’s almost always the best course of action to retreat.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/142.jpg

Not burdened by heavy armor, Delfina is the first to arrive. Doesn’t it somewhat defeat the purpose of having a bodyguard if you’re just going to run out ahead? Delfina's ranged attacks get caught on the corner of the doorway, so she can't hit PANTS until she enters the room. Lordred enters first, so we set off the Power Magnet, and resist the urge to use the Smash Floor on him…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/143.jpg

This is the first time Power Magnet has pulled an enemy all the way to the wall, so only now do we get the Initial Trap bonus! The Smash Floor had been saved for Delfina since her ranged attack + low hp + healing abilities means she should die first. Sadly, the Smash Floor lobs her right over the Lumber Saw. Yes, this dungeon has one too.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/144.jpg

As usual, Spike Rock, and Rock-type traps in general, make good finishers. Disturbing family, didn’t I say?

By now, Lordred has just gotten free of the Power Magnet, so PANTS runs back to the room she started in to see what it has to offer.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/145.jpg

Knights love this leaping overhead slash that is very predictable and easy to dodge.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/146.jpg

This massive guillotine blade automatically drops on anyone (including PANTS) passing under it, walking or otherwise.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/147.jpg

Lordred’s bio said he was “fearless of arrows and small bombs,” but that only applies while he’s standing and can block the arrow or guard against the blast. While prone, he’s just as vulnerable as any other enemy. Some opponents do have true immunity to fire or other elements, however.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/148.jpg

With Delfina and Lordred both gone, Hornstein and his freakish “son” Diva the Psycho show up. Psychos (yes, that’s his Class) have a jump attack like Knights do, but are faster and usually land behind you. Fortunately, the low railing along the steps are too much for him to jump over, so he won’t get a chance until he has a direct path.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/149.jpg

Smash Floor normally throws an enemy 8 squares, but going uphill reduces the distance to 6 squares in this case. I honestly wasn’t expecting that barrel to do so much damage, but I won’t complain.

Frame 1: the Lava Vase is falling, Frame 2: Diva is instantly standing up! Press Wall has the same effect (as I found out the hard way) of standing up a prone opponent. I continue to be amazed by the Ark multiplier Lava Vase must have. Thanks guys for suggesting it, I went nearly 10 years before finally seeing how good it is! Also, I didn't know if Lava Vase would even work on an enemy that wasn't standing.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/151.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/152.jpg

Mad with impotent rage, Hornstein trundles towards us, heedless of the trap at his feet. Smash Floor hurls him to the bottom of the room where a Rolling Bomb waits for him.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/153.jpg

Most explosions launch the victim into the air – directly up if they are centered on the blast. The Lava Vase attaches to his head in midair to finish him off.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/154.jpg

Having lots of targets to hit really multiplies the Ark!

Deadmoon: Have you found the King yet?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/155.jpg

Matia: I’m sorry?

Deadmoon: Don’t you see?

Deadmoon: The immortal TMD can simply hide to avoid our plans for them.

Deadmoon: We’ll die waiting for them to strike. They can easily hide to avoid our threat easily.

Matia: ……

No, Matia, I don’t know why he used “easily” twice in one sentence either.

Deadmoon: Then maybe we should simply declare we’ve deposed the King?

Deadmoon: We’ll draw him out. And deal with him on our terms.

Deadmoon: Don’t we have some unfinished business with the girl?

Matia: Hehe… not yet… but Legral dealt her a well-placed bomb under the altar.

Matia: He died before delivering the detonator. But tampering will also deploy the bomb …and blow the girl away with it.

Matia: But who can we afford to lose on a suicide mission?

Deadmoon: I see.

Deadmoon: Of course.

Deadmoon: There were some Hornstein’s men that wanted to become members of our troops.

This next chapter is tough. Not only do we face 5 opponents with varying abilities, we have a secondary objective to prevent them from reaching the altar behind the throne room.

Fortunately, we have lots of Ark to upgrade our trap selection.

And so it begins. Mucro is on the west side and has a straighter path for PANTS to intercept. Goatbone is on the east, but will run away if he sees us. Neither can be ignored, but we’ll go set something up for Goatbone first.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/161.jpg

One nice thing about Flash Bomb is that is has a radius, so as soon as the door opens, the enemy is in the area of effect. We may or may not be able to catch Goatbone with it before he runs, but the Flash Bomb isn’t the critical element here.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/162.jpg

Looks like the Flash Bomb got him, so he’ll just stand in the open doorway for his vision to clear while a giant pinball rolls towards him.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/163.jpg

No time to stick around and finish him off, we have to run back to deal with Mucro and trust that Goatbone is now sufficiently wounded to slow down his race to the altar.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/164.jpg

PANTS makes it back to the foyer barely in ahead of Mucro, and immediately uses the Power Magnet to cover the entire doorway.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/165.jpg

Iron Ball is magnetic, that alone makes it (debatably) the best Rock-type trap. Iron Ball has another unique property that doesn’t come into play here, but will probably feature later this chapter.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/166.jpg

Next up is Claire, who has the courtesy to use the front door. Goatbone hasn’t made too much progress, so we’ll go see if we can’t finish him off.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/167.jpg

Goatbone is already climbing the stairs, but bizarrely decides to turn around rather than keep going. Doesn’t he know what’s going to happen?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/168.jpg

That’s how I roll.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/169.jpg

Unfortunately, Claire gets to the foyer before PANTS does, and we really didn’t have traps set up to handle an enemy standing in the middle of the room. After dodging her first crossbow bolt, we both rush for the door, and Claire kicks me in the head for trying to get past her.

I’d love to know how you fire a crossbow bolt at a 135 degree angle away from where it’s aimed. It’s another poison attack, and in the green haze, I can’t see her next shot to dodge it. Meanwhile, she’s standing just outside my Power Magnet range.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/171.jpg

After ducking out the door and coming back in, Claire steps into Power Magnet range, and gets the familiar Spring Floor trip to the Floor Spikes.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/172.jpg

A quick look at the map reveals that Dorcas is almost here, so it’s time to retreat to the altar room. Claire is slow to get up, and pays the price.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/173.jpg

The altar room has a nice balcony that overlooks where Dorcas will enter, but it looks like Volcano may arrive nearly the same time…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/174.jpg

Volcano shows up first, and of course the traps are set assuming Dorcas would arrive first. PANTS runs down the steps to hide in a corner and hope the bad men go away.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/175.jpg

Dorcas had almost no choice but to step into the path of the Power Magnet, but PANTS can’t believe her good fortune when Volcano walks into the Magnet’s field as well. The Magnet does not cover the base of the steps, so he could have evaded it were he more careful.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/176.jpg

Power Magnet to pull an enemy over floor spikes, followed by a Spring Floor to launch them back over the spikes almost feels like cheating.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/177.jpg

There’s an Iron Ball in place to finish off Dorcas, who has the ability to bleed up steps! Pay no attention to the clipping in that last frame.

Well at least these guys know about the bombs and won’t blow up the castle.

Place Damage Charge Cost
Spike Wall Wall 35 5 2400
Spiked Wall thrusts out, stabs and throws victims 3 blocks away.

Triple Arrow Wall 26 5 2600
Three arrows shoot in sequence from mask on the wall.

Blast Bomb Floor 50 7 2400
Explosive flame spreads across 1 block & pushes victim 3 blocks.

Cold Claw Floor 25 5 2000
When Iron blades pin victim’s feet, cold air gushes up and freezes victim

Lift Floor Floor 25 4 1900
Floor rises, pressing victim against ceiling.

Spark Rod Floor 45 6 1900
Rod zaps victim, electrifies water and other electric traps.

Evil Breath Ceiling 0 4 1200
Evil magic gas slows victim and lowers his defense

Vat Ceiling 20 2 1200
Vat drops on victim, enraging victim for hours.

Buying Attack Wall unlocked 2 new traps, Flash Bomb unlocked 2 new traps, and Confuse Gas unlocked 2 new traps, for a total of 6 new traps to choose from. I figure I’m overdue to pick up Triple Arrow by now (per Elfir’s request) but there’ll be 1935 left over to pick up something new.

Chapter 9: Alternate Ending!

After Goatbone touches the statue, everything starts shaking violently, then it cuts to a shot of PANTS shaking her head.

In all of the chapters before this one, the player can always retreat to set up traps in the next room, find the healing stone, etc. Chapter 9 is the first chapter where there's a real danger of losing.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/185.jpg

The enemies start a long distance away, and you have to wonder why PANTS would ever stray too far from the bombs capable of obliterating the castle?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/186.jpg

Matia and Helmut present a different problem from usual: they will wait for PANTS to come to them. Hopefully, they’ll be willing to give chase if PANTS steps into the room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/187.jpg

I don’t know what Helmut is trying to say here, but it sure looks like we got their attention. Run away!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/188.jpg

Helmut?! Matia is faster… but she went back to hang out at the altar for some reason.
Where Press Wall slowly pushes an enemy, Attack Wall flings them 4 squares.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/189.jpg

I believe this is the first time we’ve used Lava Vase without it killing a victim. Helmut tries to run into the wall (the last direction he was facing) while taking damage-over-time from Lava. Sharp-eyed readers will note that I switched the wall and floor traps…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/190.jpg

That’s 3 different arrows in case that’s not clear.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/191.jpg

It looks like the combo fell apart somewhere, I blame Triple Arrow for that. In the last frame, you can barely see the flattened Helmut as the Lift Floor drops back down.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/192.jpg

I don’t know how Helmut healed himself while lying on the ground, but another Triple Arrow finishes him off.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/193.jpg

So why didn’t you tell her before you’d been thoroughly ventilated? Don’t expect me to pass that message along for you, buddy.

I don’t really relish the idea of running around in that room, waiting for traps to charge, so hopefully PANTS can lure her out this time.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/194.jpg

I don’t think Assassins are immune to gas, I think it’s more likely I was too slow activating the trap.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/195.jpg

Matia gets a free hit, but the Attack Wall shoves her into the barrel of death (which I didn’t get a good shot of) and into another clipping error.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/196.jpg

Now the real Deadmoon shows up.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/197.jpg

Having learned from the earlier mistake, the Confuse Gas takes effect right as Layla steps through the door. Confuse Gas causes the victim to slowly amble forward, much like the original Vase trap.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/198.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/199.jpg

As Layla has her last breaths crushed out of her, the door opens and Deadmoon immediately launches one of those annoying homing energy orbs. PANTS’ attempt to dodge is then interrupted by Layla’s final gurgle.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/200.jpg

Looks like Deadmoon is literally a “shoot first, ask questions later” kind of guy.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/201.jpg

This isn’t the best situation to be in, but fortunately…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/202.jpg

Even the mighty Deadmoon is susceptible to a 600 Ark Gas trap. This gives us a free ticket to escape and regroup to a room that hasn’t seen much action yet.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/203.jpg

It’s a good thing he can’t shoot through those archways, or over the railing. By the time he has a clean shot, so does PANTS.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/204.jpg

Yes, this castle has a ceiling fan of death (Death Fan), enabling an impressive 7-hit “Master Combo!” Confuse Gas as the finisher so that Deadmoon will walk forward into the Smash Floor, to reset the combo.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/205.jpg

It’s very important to wait a second or so between each hit to allow time for traps to charge. Now Confuse Gas is just to make him cough while the repositioned Lift Floor finishes charging.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/206.jpg

That glow in the last frame means Deadmoon is regenerating, but the Triple Arrow is almost done charging…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/207.jpg

I have no idea what “Draconia” refers to, whether it’s a place that isn’t referenced anywhere else in the game, or just a poorly translated epithet.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/208.jpg

Not bad, though I could have tried harder to get a death blow with the Ceiling Fan…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/209.jpg

King Eclypse: At any rate, there’s no more need to worry. We can go back to the castle now.

Priest Dusk: I’m afraid we should remain here a little longer.

King Eclypse: Why is that?

Priest Dusk: Well, sir, a bomb has been set at the castle’s altar. And it’s rumored that you’ve hidden a royal secret there.

King Eclypse: Hmm, that’s very interesting.

King Eclypse: Why don’t we wait and see how the humans are influenced by this rumor.

Priest Dusk: Yes, your majesty.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/210.jpg

Blackword: What do you mean?

Jackal: There’s a royal secret hidden in the altar. I heard it’s the key to immortality.

Blackword: It can’t be. Do you really think the King would leave something that important behind?

Jackal: He must value his life over the secret. Besides, he didn’t leave it unguarded he’s put someone there to protect it.

Jackal: If there’s nothing valuable in the castle, he wouldn’t have needed to leave a guard, would he?

Blackword: Protecting the castle? Well, I see…

Blackword: Then why didn’t he simply use his army to surround the castle and keep it safe?

Jackal: I have no idea.

Jackal: There’s no easy explanation. Intuition tells me there’s something in the castle. I want you to go there with me.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/211.jpg

So PANTS is a “creature” now?

Sorry for the missed update yesterday. Real life, you know?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/214.jpg

Can’t really fault his logic on this one. He’s the only one here right now, but at his speed he’ll take forever to get anywhere. As a precaution, it probably makes more sense to go set traps at the altar room before going to meet Hebel…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/215.jpg

And this is why. Jackal shows up about 30 seconds after the mission starts, and pretty close to the altar, too.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/216.jpg

Several updates ago, I hinted that Iron Ball has a unique property besides being magnetic. It also bounces (I don’t know how well the bouncing is conveyed by these screenshots). In this situation, the Attack Wall sends the Iron Ball bouncing back & forth quite a few times before Jackal gets to the door. He tries to jump to the side, but is stuck in the doorway with little room to maneuver.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/217.jpg

In some ways, Spark Rod can be used like other holding traps like Heavy Claw. Jackal only convulses for about a second, but that can be plenty of time to set off other trap combinations (which I fail to do here).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/218.jpg

Fun Fact: Jackal is (was) a Red Blood member, and we would have had to fight him in Chapter 5 had we not spared Gerald and Rain.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/219.jpg

He starts in a room with water? And we just bought Spark Rod? Looks like Hebel still hasn’t gotten too far, he may even get to the foyer before PANTS does.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/220.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/221.jpg

The Triple Arrow was just to deter Blackword, since I saw he might otherwise intrude in the middle of the conversation with Hebel. Sure enough, I had to fire off a few arrows that bounced off the door as Blackword ran away.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/222.jpg

Phantoms (Blackword’s job class) are another type of enemy that will hide and cower like Thieves. Phantoms have a ranged attack that causes status ailments if you get too close, however.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/223.jpg

I only wanted to get a better view for screenshotting, but Blackword backed into the corner to stand in the water. Guess I don’t need positioning traps, but I use the Iron Ball first so the death blow will be from electrocution. Notice he starts taking electricity damage before he splashes.

:(

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/225.jpg

Well, at least the bonus for an exact kill isn’t too hard. Blackword’s corpse crackles with electricity a couple times before fading away.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/226.jpg

Eventually, Hebel makes it back to the front door and leaves…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/227.jpg

And finally Seetha shows up. Seetha isn’t here for the altar, he’s here to test us or something.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/228.jpg

Activate Confuse Gas after the door opens… and there’s a glowing, very fast-moving, energy orb coming at PANTS too fast to sidestep! Holy crap, that flung her a distance! We’d have gone farther if not for the walls. I knew Timenoids were immune to Magnets, I did not know they were immune to gas traps.

Unfortunately, Seetha decides to turn around and PANTS needs to get his attention to lure him back…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/229.jpg

Well, we got his attention alright. Missed the timing on Lava Vase though. This could certainly be going better, but at least he can’t see us standing behind the pillar.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/230.jpg

This is a better example of using Spark Rod as a holding trap while the pillar falls to crush him. The pillar covers up his pool of blood, but as a backstory reminder, Timenoid blood is blue. Hence the anti-TMD organization, “Red Blood”.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/231.jpg

Between taking damage, letting Hebel go free, and learning that electrified water sucks for Ark, this may be the worst chapter so far for income. That’s why I didn’t buy Cold Claw last time; I knew there’d be very little left to buy anything new with.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/232.jpg

Cynthia: Of course I do!

Cynthia: But…

Gunter: Then just be quiet and wait here!

Cynthia: But, honey…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/233.jpg

If we’d killed everyone up to this point, here’s where we really see if we have the stomach to continue the genocide. Gunter is determined and must be killed, but his wife and child may be spared.

A less weighty question is what trap(s?) to buy next:

Place Damage Charge Cost
Spike Wall Wall 35 5 2400
Spiked Wall thrusts out, stabs and throws victims 3 blocks away.

Chain Needle Wall 23 7 3800
Five knifelike needles shoot from the mask on the wall.

Blast Bomb Floor 50 7 2400
Explosive flame spreads across 1 block & pushes victim 3 blocks.

Cold Claw Floor 25 5 2000
When Iron blades pin victim’s feet, cold air gushes up and freezes victim

Rising Floor Floor 30 6 3600
Floor thrusts up and injures victim against ceiling then floor.

Thunder Volt Floor 65 7 4100
Lightning strikes rod, electrifies water and other electric traps.
Magnet Floor Floor 0 9 3400
Floor becomes magnetic and pins victims within 1 block radius.

Evil Breath Ceiling 0 4 1200
Evil magic gas slows victim and lowers his defense

Vat Ceiling 20 2 1200
Vat drops on victim, enraging victim for hours.

We have 4426 Ark, not a lot, but enough to give PANTS a new toy to keep her happy.

For future reference: There is absolutely no one in the Deception series who is smart enough to live. Natural selection should have wiped out the entire population a long, long time ago.

PANTS is a mime, so she has the right to kill the rest of the idiots. The heroines from Deception 3 and Trapt, however, are just as stupid (if not moreso) than their victims.

While I appreciate their discussion of plans as if there were no 3rd person omniscient observer, it isn’t that useful to know they are entering through the front door 5 seconds before they do so.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/253.jpg

The Magnet Floor affects 3x3 squares, so you won’t see PANTS standing too close to get better screenshots. A shame this room is so dark, I think a torture chamber could benefit from better lighting.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/254.jpg

That’s one down, now how close is Mebius? Crap.
(PANTS was too busy admiring her handiwork and I happened to pause a split second before getting hit.)

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/255.jpg

Kagero is, in some ways, a puzzle game, and part of the challenge is in lining up your opponents for what you have planned. Sometimes it’s easy if you have a welcoming barrage after a door opens, but many times you have to run around until a trap charges and the enemy is where you want them. Here I’m only using the Magnet Floor to hold Mebius still while PANTS gets in position. Once Mebius is free and walks forward, the Lava Vase will forcibly continue her path…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/256.jpg

All of this effort just because I realized I’d never gotten a death blow with a Lumber Saw since I’d mentioned wanting to do so back in Chapter 4.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/257.jpg

To be honest, we don’t know why Gustave is here. Therefore, we should assume the worst: that he’s after the “Secret” and will blow up the whole castle if allowed.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/258.jpg

This is weird. While being held by the Magnet Floor, Triple Arrow hits briefly show “5 Dmg” but then show “0 Dmg” immediately after. Soldiers are normally immune to arrows, but they shouldn’t be immune while held in a Magnet. I don’t know if it’s a glitch due to that, or whether the Magnet Floor is recapturing Grand’Or right after each hit, and that’s what’s showing the 0 damage. You can see from his life bar that he is taking damage in any case.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/259.jpg

The Iron Ball swings towards the center of the magnetic field as it falls, and knocks Grand’Or into the electric chair for the death blow.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/260.jpg

Grand’Or and Saki are more Red Blood members that we could have encountered back in Chapter 5 had Gerald and Rain not been spared. Instead, Mebius would have recruited Hunna and Ash for this chapter’s mission.

I still don’t know why Gustave came here. He doesn’t say anything, and he just cowers at the mere sight of PANTS. With a little maneuvering, he’s convinced to run away to a more interesting room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/262.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/263.jpg

Those that cower before me deserve nothing less than a quick, Ark-heavy death!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/264.jpg

Otto: I’ll go find your mother and father.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/265.jpg

Otto runs away when he sees PANTS, but keeps coming back to the door to see if anything changed in the previous 5 seconds.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/266.jpg

PANTS goes and hides in the hall to lure Otto into the room. When the map shows he’s within range of the Magnet Floor, PANTS jumps back into the room, shouting “Boo!”

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/267.jpg

Magnet Floor and Iron Ball work together almost like a loophole to the “no ceiling traps directly over floor traps” rule. I think Otto has to be a candidate for the best dying words.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/268.jpg

Emilia is weird; she just stands there frozen, not even cowering. Enemies that do cower typically attack if you get this close to them, but Emilia doesn’t do that, either.

We’ll encounter several new classes of enemy next chapter, and Void is another of the same class that Deadmoon was. Curiously, we can allow Void to live if you all are so inclined.

Place Damage Charge Cost
Spike Wall Wall 35 5 2400
Spiked Wall thrusts out, stabs and throws victims 3 blocks away.

Chain Needle Wall 23 7 3800
Five knifelike needles shoot from the mask on the wall.

Cold Arrow Wall 32 4 4000
Cold air shoots from mask, freezing victim.

Blast Bomb Floor 50 7 2400
Explosive flame spreads across 1 block & pushes victim 3 blocks.

Rising Floor Floor 30 6 3600
Floor thrusts up and injures victim against ceiling then floor.

Thunder Volt Floor 65 7 4100
Lightning strikes rod, electrifies water and other electric traps.

Vacuum Floor Floor 0 12 4300
Floor becomes super magnet; pins victims within 2 block radius.

Evil Breath Ceiling 0 4 1200
Evil magic gas slows victim and lowers his defense

8201 Ark is quite a bit of buying power, even with the increasing prices. We can buy nearly any combination of 2 traps, so what should be added to PANTS’ arsenal?

I'm going to ask the question that no one seems to be asking:
Why does the castle have a self destruct button, and why do humans think it's the secret to eternal life? I assume that people were instructed to never touch it, so rumors spread about it, but it seems like it would have been easier to, y'know, take the bomb out of the castle to keep people from touching it.

Deadmoon started the rumor about the secret because he wants someone to set off the bomb and kill the King and/or PANTS.

We know Ursula is trying to bait PANTS, but it’s not like we have much of a choice.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/276.jpg

Ursula is still just standing there, and Gostero hasn’t shown up, so I guess we’re free to set up a combo. Blast Bomb is an excellent trap because it does good damage, covers a fairly large area, and throws the victim.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/277.jpg

Looks like Blast Bomb is another one that doesn’t want to give the Initial Trap bonus. Rolling Bomb had the same issue.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/278.jpg

Well Ursula, you did manage to pull PANTS down away from protecting the virgin icon (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/156.jpg). Plus, you just stood there waiting for PANTS to have her way with you, and she did so with multiple hot explosions.

I feel dirty.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/279.jpg

Figures. Like all thieves, Gostero hides, cowers, and in this case, runs away back to the room he started in.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/280.jpg

The description for Spike Wall is incorrect. It claims to “throw victims 3 blocks away,” but it only pushes them 3 blocks from the wall like Press Wall did. As far as positioning Traps go, Attack Wall is better and I’ll switch back to it now that the Initial Trap bonus is out of the way.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/281.jpg

Seriously? You’re blaming her at this point? Did you forget the parts where you sent her in first, and you cowered in the corner?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/287.jpg

I should have thought to do something like this for the July 4th update. Blast Bomb is also nice because it has a radius and can set off a double explosion when placed next to a Powder Box.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/288.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/289.jpg

These two both have very high hp, fairly high move speed, and are traveling together. I probably won’t be able to do anything too fancy with them.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/290.jpg

When standing next to a wall, the L2 button can let you control the camera to see through the wall. It isn’t actually useful very often, but sometimes it can come in handy.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/291.jpg

Evil Breath is really just a glorified Slow Gas. I only used that trap once, and I don’t foresee using this one more often either. If I’m going to use a gas trap, I’d rather it be one that offers some control over their movement, like Confuse Gas. For the record: pure luck that I’m going to get a Double Hit on these idiots from the Pillar.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/292.jpg

Still no initial trap for Blast Bomb, I bet that won’t be listed for Zartus’ cause of death, either…

Unfortunately, the Spike Wall is about 1 second too slow to chain the combo.

Belkdahl: That’s true.

Belkdahl: Even if it’s a trap, we can handle it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/304.jpg

This is probably the worst starting position so far this game. Two ranged attackers immediately throw projectiles at PANTS, fortunately the game isn’t so cheap that there isn’t time to dodge. And run away.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/305.jpg

Either Bleuge is immune to gas traps, or I was too slow on the trigger (the latter being more likely). Bleuge easily leaps over the Smash Floor and throws a pair of axes into PANTS. Time to run away some more!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/306.jpg

It’s a good thing these guys are after PANTS instead of the secret grail thingy. While under the effects of Berserk Gas (or Basin or Vat), an enemy can’t use any of their active defense abilities like Bleuge’s ability to leap away from floor traps. It’s similar to when they are trapped in a magnet, but far less safe. That last panel is a trick, it’s still showing the Initial Trap from the Berserk Gas since the Rising Floor hasn’t done any damage yet.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/307.jpg

And there it is.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/308.jpg

I hate to run away and let Lazaford heal the both of them, but there isn’t much choice.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/309.jpg

Fireball deals very good damage with a fast (5 second) charge time. Hopefully, Berserk Gas will speed up Bleuge, and Lazaford will be slower now so the two will be separated…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/310.jpg

Wait… that’s different. The Berserk status apparently completely turns off Bleuge’s pathfinding algorithm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pathfinding), so she runs up to the wall nearest PANTS, and futilely throws axes that clatter harmlessly to the ground. Meanwhile, Lazaford chases his tank, spamming cures.

Zithuan
07-08-2008, 11:05 PM
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/311.jpg

Berserk Gas was required to once again override Bleuge’s evasion abilities, and good ol’ Attack Wall flings her a hefty distance away. Poor, unsuspecting Lazaford dutifully runs after, unaware that he is the real target.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/312.jpg

There we go, one down. Bleuge has recovered and run past the Berserk Gas trap by now, so PANTS will continue her castle tour.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/313.jpg

It’s nice having a high damage wall trap to combine better with Magnet Floor. Unfortunately, I’ve confirmed that the projectile does knock a victim off-center from the Magnet Floor, so it has to regrab the victim after each hit. That explains the perceived weirdness with Triple Arrow a couple chapters ago, and why we get two “2 Combos” instead of a single “3 Combo” here.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/314.jpg

Oh, how did you want to die? I’m not sure I should start taking requests on that; someone will insist I get a killing blow with Press Wall or something.

Sylvia and Belkdahl, another Assassin + Chemist pairing (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=208711&postcount=98), show up at the same door Bleuge and Lazaford used, but it’s definitely not worth going in there to meet them.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/315.jpg

They’re about to enter the room… but Belkdahl is first? How did Sylvia do that?!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/316.jpg

PANTS has to stand still for a brief moment to set off traps, so Sylvia gets a few easy hits in. Time to keep running!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/317.jpg

We fail to catch Sylvia in the Berserk Gas and get hit. Later, Sylvia is too fast and runs past the Attack Wall, and we get hit some more. There are a few more undocumented hits, but eventually Belkdahl stumbles into the area of effect for the Berserk Gas.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/318.jpg

Oh dear god, what happened to his head?!
I forgot that Berserk Gas also does poison damage over time, which yields a very crappy, 0 Ark, death blow. Also, why isn’t a Chemist immune to gas/poison or at least able to heal himself?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/319.jpg

Eventually, Sylvia is too focused on PANTS and gets caught by the Attack Wall.

This central room makes a good base of operations, and we open with a traditional Lava Vase against the opposing Knight. Gilbaless then blindly rushes forward, towards a large, creepy face on the wall.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/329.jpg

It’s actually a large, creepy, electrified face! Sadly, the push from the Attack Wall doesn’t send him back through the electricity, but there is an Oil Vase ready to continue Gilbaless’ suffering.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/330.jpg

Another nice thing about Fire Ball is that it will travel up stairs. Most projectiles just go in straight line and stop at anything other than an empty square. I decided to equip both Lava Vase and Oil Vase this chapter just for the combo potential. Both charge very quickly (2 or 3 seconds) and as long as an enemy has a Vase on their head, the combo is maintained for the next hit. Gilbaless also has very high fire resistance (Blast Bomb + Fireball combined did less than 50 damage) which means we can keep hitting him for more and more combo hits.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/331.jpg

Oroch shows up without any fanfare, and shortly thereafter, Ballatine decides to abandon his post and go looking for trouble.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/332.jpg

Oroch corrects guesses PANTS’ identity and immediately tries to run as fast as his little ninja legs can. An Oil Vase Slows him down however, and an Attack Wall knocks him away from the door…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/333.jpg

It’s been a while since we tossed someone into a fireplace. The fireplace hits him twice, but the second hit is no more photogenic than the first.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/334.jpg

Ballatine decides to take the left path, so there’s no reason to leave this room. We Attack Wall him over to where a Lava Vase will force him to walk forward into that pit. It’s funny that I pretty much never used Lava Vase prior to this LP, and now it’s one of my favorite traps. In case you were wondering, yes, there is a big pool of lava in this room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/335.jpg

Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a falling-into-a-pit animation; one frame he’s walking forward, the next he’s just gone.
I think Ballantine’s player is arguing with the DM that a less than 10 foot fall shouldn’t do 50 damage. Sorry dude, I told you we were playing by hardcore rules (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1889182362), now roll 3d6 in order to get new stats.

Leopold: Some of the search party were killed by her.

Keith: This doesn’t look good for us. I wanted to avoid confrontation until we get our hands on the Timenoid grail.

Keith: I don’t want to lose anymore Red Blood members, especially when our true mission is to destroy the Timenoids. And there’s no guarantee we can defeat her.

Leopold: But, captain, do you think she’ll simply let us go?

Keith: She’s even killed some of the search party members. I have little hope.

Keith: But we need to find the grail first. This is the Red Blood’s most important mission.

Keith: I’m going to the ruins, too.

Leopold: Roger.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/339.jpg

Carmine: When we get the grail, people will join us in our fight against the Timenoids!

Keith: Exactly.

Keith: But, as you know, the girl who killed Gerald and the others now protects the ruins. She’s the Timenoid’s secret warrior and she can’t easily be killed.

Keith: We have to confront her sooner or later.

Keith: The priority is the grail, not the girl. We must avoid losing any more men in this fight with her.

Hey, PANTS didn’t kill Gerald! Did he fake his own death so he could go run off with Rain or something?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/341.jpg

They don’t look like much, but this is the most important chapter in the game for determining what ending we get. We’ve long since eliminated the “kill everyone” ending, but there are still three possibilities based on whether or not these guys live.

Place Damage Charge Cost
Buzz Saw Wall 45 7 4600
Saw Blade flies through air drops victim upon impact.

Cold Arrow Wall 32 4 4000
Cold air shoots from mask, freezing victim.

Quake Bomb Floor 0 5 3400
Causes a quake that will activate all traps within 2 blocks.

Thunder Volt Floor 65 7 4100
Lightning strikes rod, electrifies water and other electric traps.

Vacuum Floor Floor 0 12 4300
Floor becomes super magnet; pins victims within 2 block radius.

Heat Breath Ceiling 1 5 4000
Red hot gas slowly weakens victim.

8153 Ark is a pretty good amount, hopefully it makes up for the prior chapter’s meager allowance. Keep in mind that I still owe you guys a use of Chain Needle, and depending on the consensus, PANTS might not set off a single trap this chapter.

So what shall it be? What sort of eventual fate will befall PANTS?

Next… “Chapter 17: Call of Blood”

I’m not sure exactly when the next update will be since I want to allow enough time for anyone interested to voice an opinion, and I have plans for Friday night.

Well as spoiler-free as possible (but still spoilered out), the short answer is that if none of the search party escape alive, PANTS will be forced to kill Keith and we get the "bad" ending (that ironically gives the best trap in the entire game). If the grail is discovered, then there will be a final branching path several chapters later....

I could go either way with this. I like the kill-em ending and one of the don't-kill-em endings.

Now, I'm all for good endings, but what is this ultimate trap about?

In subsequent playthroughs, the endings you've gotten so far unlock new traps that are available immediately in the next playthrough. Unless Zithuan wants to keep playing beyond the end to show off the new traps and other endings (a lot of effort for not much more content), it doesn't matter.

There seemed to be a consensus towards letting the Red Blood find the grail, so this update will be pretty quick and uneventful.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/342.jpg

A prelude of the lack of excitement to come, the mission starts with no dialogue, just PANTS staring at a door. I didn’t even know she had an idle pose!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/343.jpg

My emulator only runs when it has priority, so I flipped through the D&D 4e Monster Manual while I waited for these guys to make it to the grail. Couldn’t the Red Blood have sent ninjas or something for this mission?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/344.jpg

The translators at Tecmo evidently are using the definition (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/grail) of grail: “any greatly desired and sought-after objective; ultimate ideal or reward.” This “grail” appears to be a large stone slab with writing on it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/345.jpg

Bortos is a linguistics specialist? I would not have guessed.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/346.jpg

This time, I pay a bit more attention to get a screenshot of where the other exit is.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/347.jpg

And that’s it! The first two guys get in and out with copies of the writing, so no one else bothers to enter.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/348.jpg

Only 6 minutes, 46 seconds? It sure felt longer than that, but it always does when you have to stand still and wait for other people.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/349.jpg

Sigma: But you don’t believe in fighting.

Ramda: Yes, but…

Sigma: Are you sure you’ll be ok?

Ramda: I just don’t feel right about battling in a sacred place.

Sigma: I understand…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/350.jpg

These guys didn’t get the memo about it being ok for PANTS to be here. I have to seriously question King Eclypse’s style of governance. He only places a single guard at important sites, and doesn’t tell any of his subjects? It’s almost like he wants a bloodbath…

I bought Heat Breath (not that I used it), and the only trap unlocked from that costs more than the 5153 Ark available. Therefore, I’ll go ahead and buy Buzz Saw since there’s no point in having Magnets equipped against Timenoid opponents.

Obviously this was a pathetically short update, so the next one, a “real” update, will be later tonight.

Next… “Chapter 18: Timenoid Shadows”

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/351.jpg

Another quiet start, Ramda shows up alone not far from PANTS’ starting position. Fortunately, the central room is a very defensible location.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/352.jpg

PANTS takes position on the far side of the room from the Volt Wall (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=217148&postcount=149), and prepares to launch the Buzz Saw. Like many NPCs, Ramda doesn’t say anything until he has an unblocked line of sight, but all PANTS hears is “Ark ark ark Arkark!”

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/353.jpg

Buzz Saw’s description doesn’t give any hint about the real beauty of the trap: it pushes the victim all the way to the opposing wall! So in this situation, the Buzz Saw pushed Ramda 12 squares into the Volt Wall and the Heat Breath waiting to finish the job. The downside to Buzz Saw is that many enemies are immune or resistant to projectile traps.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/354.jpg

Heat Breath on the other hand sucks; it inflicts about 20 damage per second in 1 damage increments. It’s very good at killing things, but completely worthless for Ark. Since we’re on track to have bought all the traps before the game’s end, I may use it more in the later chapters.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/355.jpg

Sigma shows up, and he’s brought a friend! I’m not entirely sure what the difference between a “Shadow” and an “Assassin” is, since they use the same character model. She doesn’t show up on the map right now, so my guess is that she is hiding in Sigma’s shadow, much like Hagane (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=205468&postcount=66) was hiding in Deadmoon’s shadow. I didn’t get a good screenshot then, so hopefully I can get one this time.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/356.jpg

If you look carefully at Sigma’s feet after he’s been hit with the Lava Vase, Mist apparently crawls out of his feet and pretends to be his shadow now that he’s not floating. Freaky.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/357.jpg

Mist frees herself from Sigma and teleports right next to PANTS just as the Chain Needle starts to unload into Sigma.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/358.jpg

The Chain Needle hits Sigma several times and kills him before Mist has a chance to strike. It really is a shame that multi-hit traps aren’t really worth using in this game. Chain Needle was the prerequisite for Buzz Saw though, so I never completely skip it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/359.jpg

Sigma finishes his dying words, and Mist finally gets her hit a split second later. The most annoying thing about Mist is that we have to fight her in this room, or she’ll just teleport away and vow revenge in a later chapter. Yes, I learned that the hard way and had to restart. :(

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/360.jpg

Mist gets another hit before we are able to start running away, but Mist is very hard to get away from. When Mist stops to take a swipe is the only time we can really put some distance between them. In the course of fleeing, PANTS steps dangerously close to the Pit Fall…

Zithuan
07-12-2008, 09:41 PM
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/361.jpg

And Mist falls in on her own! NPCs almost never accidentally walk into room traps, and that “almost” is solely due to this event right here! Mist is now much more manageable, but I resist the urge to use the Lava Vase for the death blow.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/362.jpg

Why use a mere vase filled with lava when there’s a massive pool of lava right here? Lava doesn’t count as a “room device” so there’s no Initial Trap benefit for killing someone that way, but I could place traps in the lava if I was so inclined.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/363.jpg

Like I said before, multi-hit traps like Chain Needle and Heat Breath suck for Ark.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/366.jpg

Keith: However, is what we’ve been taught by them true?

Keith: But is the peace we have here truly peace?

Keith: I lost my parents and sister when I was a boy… they vanished without a trace. Such events have been common here.

Keith: I’ve researched the disappearances that have taken place over the years.

Keith: In every instance the Timenoids were somehow involved.

Keith: I learned that much.

Keith: Against all reason I thought the disappearances were murders committed by the Timenoids against the humans.

Keith: You may wonder what motivation they would have. I wondered, too. Until I found the answer at their Sacred Place.

Keith: The Timenoids are not a unique species born with immortality. The Timenoids were born human just like us.

Keith: Then why don’t they share this knowledge with the humans?

Keith: Though they were mortals at one time, the Timenoids are now immortal.

Keith: The Timenoids don’t want to share this gift with the humans.

Keith: The Timenoids have been stalking and killing humans… and make it look as if they simply vanish.

Keith: These clues led me to discover one important fact.

Keith: The Timenoids need human souls in order to obtain immortality!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/367.jpg

Priest Dusk: Yes, your majesty.

Priest Dusk: We are trying to suppress the rebellion, but even some of our own guards have been influenced by the address.

King Eclypse: Keith. A stupid man. Anyone could have predicted that the country would be in chaos if someone made such an address.

King Eclypse: Besides, if he thinks it’s true, why doesn’t he try to obtain immortality himself and become a Timenoid.

Priest Dusk: Keith is probably planning to exterminate the Timenoid.

King Eclypse: Then what will he do? Even if he obtains power, the country will revert to chaos when he dies. An immortal must lead.

Priest Dusk: Yes, your majesty.

King Eclypse: It’s no use… it’s PANTS’ fault that the grail was discovered by the humans. She may be plotting with Keith.

King Eclypse: We must have someone take care of her as soon as possible. Do you know of any human we can use?

Priest Dusk: All the trustworthy humans are out suppressing the rebellion at the moment.

Priest Dusk: However, I think that some of the prisoners may obey. They haven’t heard Keith’s address.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/368.jpg

Bossgun: Understood.

Gordeau: Gina, you work with Bossgun, All right?

Gina: Got it.

Gordeau: Priest Dusk guarantees our freedom if we succeed with this mission. We must not fail.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/369.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/370.jpg

So you guys caused a civil war by letting those guys go free! Having to transcribe all that text made me wish we had just killed them instead. Keith’s speech does contain a few interesting plot tidbits though… such as hinting at what happens in the slaughter everyone ending… And also the mention of his family…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/371.jpg

Not a bad plan, but in reality, PANTS could wait until they come to her. She’s not the one fighting for her freedom. I have no intention of seeing if the NPCs do change their mind after a few minutes like Ballantine (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/331.jpg) did, however.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/372.jpg

I suppose “Goddess” is preferable to “creature,” but these two are no less willing to kill PANTS despite that appellation. Spartus launches himself, trying to catch her with a flying tackle, and PANTS has to run around him on her way back out the door.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/373.jpg

Gordeau is the faster of the two, and gets the classic, Lava-Vase-to-run-forward-into-a-movement-trap. But what is that strange device on the other side of the room?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/374.jpg

It’s an Iron Maiden, though the game just calls it a “Casket.” I was hoping the Buzz Saw would push him back in to be impaled again, but it was not meant to be. Gordeau only has 6 hp left, but Spartus has an obscene 200 hp to chew through.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/375.jpg

PANTS retreats to this tiny little room in the corner. You can see from the first screenshot that there is a large metal plate suspended by chains…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/376.jpg

Spartus impatiently keeps trying to push past the slow-moving Gordeau, so they are both easily caught by the Smash Floor. The game developers apparently didn’t foresee a Double Hit for some traps, and for a moment, Gordeau and Spartus’ character models merge together into a four-armed monstrosity. The False Roof normally crushes everything in the room, but the Smash Floor throws the victims up into it, so the False Roof incorrectly thinks it has already done its job.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/377.jpg

Before PANTS leaves the room, she sets off an Iron Ball that somehow manages to hit Spartus twice! I have no idea how this is possible, since the Iron Ball normally disappears after a single hit.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/378.jpg

Gina and Bossgun show up far enough away from their fallen compatriots that PANTS will have to find a new room to fight in.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/379.jpg

The entrance room has a raised dias in the middle that prevents ranged attackers from targeting PANTS from the doorway. Bossgun never really had a chance.

Even though the exact same combination would work on Gina, I resist that temptation to do something a little different. The Vat-induced berserk state will prevent her from firing at PANTS, and she instead gives chase into a magnetic field. I’ll give you guys one guess where the Smash Floor is going to drop her.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/382.jpg

If you didn’t guess the floor spikes, you must be new to this thread. Floor spikes deal lots of damage, give very good Ark, and can often combo with itself. Since that’s the only room device present, there aren’t too many options for interesting deaths.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/383.jpg

I just imagine the afterlife of this world and the dead spirits comparing notes on how they died:
“You got impaled by a Floor Pike too? There’s a bunch of us that died that way, we’re going to go play soccer against the ‘Smashed by Iron Ball’ guys.”
“Hey, how’d you die, Gordeau?”
“I.. uh… got thrown by a Smash Floor.”
“Smash Floor? Like, not even into anything? Just the Smash Floor itself? That’s just sad…”

Vogues: How about using the Timenoid replica that I recently completed. Have it kill the girl.

King Eclypse: I’ll leave it in your hands.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/385.jpg

Gadoha sure has a bunch of immunities. He’s probably also immune to Magnets like the other Timenoids are.

This time, we have 9808 Ark to start finishing off our trap collection. I wouldn’t count on getting much Ark next chapter; only two opponents, and Timenoids have a pretty good track record for spoiling the No Damage Clear bonus.

Vogues looks like a Timenoid version of Goatbone, and so far seems to act like it too. He immediately turns to flee, leaving his TMDBot to fight PANTS. Gadoha is definitely a robot; when he walks, he sounds like Lux the Tetujin from 7th Saga.

Quake Bomb affects a very large area, and really only has a single use. That large rock suspended from the ceiling deals a lot of damage, but doesn’t have any other switch to set it off. This is a prime example of when to abuse the see-through-walls glitch (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=214463&postcount=131), as Gadoha will move unpredictably and fire long range, damaging, homing attacks if he has line of sight to PANTS.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/389.jpg

Gadoha would be immune to Buzz Saw if not for the Vase on his head. The Quake Bomb has to be set off fairly early (before he is even in Buzz Saw range) because of a delay before the ceiling rock falls. Once Gadoha is pushed into the Quake Bomb’s area of effect, it registers as another hit in the combo. That rock fills 4 squares, by the way; it’s pretty big.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/390.jpg

In the time it takes Gadoha to struggle to his feet and start charging his ranged attack, Fire Ball has finished charging. Yet another nice thing about Fire Ball is that immunity to arrows doesn’t help. His creator, Vogues is male, so why is Gadoha saying, “mother (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Juliana_Tainer)”..?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/391.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/392.jpg

Gordis has nearly identical stats to Gadoha, but is slightly faster, has more hp, and his ranged attack is a laser instead of energy ball. I have no particular intention of getting hit by that, you can just take my word for it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/393.jpg

Well that was easy. The sacred place has two nearly identical, U-shaped rooms that have pendulum blades lined up with the door. Spring Floor doesn’t throw a victim high enough for an Aerial Hit, but Smash Floor can.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/394.jpg

Gordis is still on his way, and PANTS hasn’t tried out Flare Rock yet. Guess we’ll just wait here and use (mostly) the same trap setup.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/395.jpg

This time, the timing of the Smash Floor isn’t synced up to the pendulum, but that’s a good thing in this case. Flaming death awaits!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/396.jpg

Fire Ball is one of the few projectiles that can hit a prone victim, but it also stands them up. So the Flare Rock lands on Gordis’ head instead of his back. Either way, this robot is made of pretty tough stuff, and isn’t damaged enough to be slowed down. Time to run!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/397.jpg

The noise of Gordis clanking down the hallway gets louder as he gets closer to the room, alerting PANTS to the best time to activate Flare Rock. Gordis starts charging up for his laser attack, but Flare Rock rolls down the stairs and makes a nice crunching sound as it barrels over him and into the hallway. Interesting, Gordis has red blood and his job class was “Puppet.” Checking my unused screenshots reveals Gadoha also had red blood…

Keith: I see. Then we must use this opportunity to overtake the castle.

Keith: We’ll kill the King.

Leopold: Yes. This will be an all-out war, right? I’ll tell the others.

Good thing PANTS won’t be at the castle, right?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/399.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/400.jpg

Priest Dusk: We have only the bodyguard to rely on. We must retreat to the sacred place and prepare to destroy the Red Blood.

King Eclypse: I see. It would be less risky to fight PANTS than take on the entire Red Blood army.

Priest Dusk: Yes, your majesty. Our army is deployed throughout the country. I’ll order their return immediately.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/401.jpg

Priest Dusk: However, she is not just a girl.

Priest Dusk: She’s killed dozens of humans!

Priest Dusk: She’s a homicidal maniac!!

Priest Dusk: She’ll use the traps set in the castle to attack you. She’s strong, and clever. You must be very careful.

Priest Dusk: If you succeed, we’ll arrange for you to become Timenoids.

Priest Dusk: Do your best, everyone!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/403.jpg

I take it back, I’d rather be at the castle. Prior to this chapter, no enemy had a damage rating higher than 54, and here we’re up against two 90s!

Place Damage Charge Cost
Cold Arrow Wall 32 4 4000
Cold air shoots from mask, freezing victim.

Catastrophe Floor 0 8 4300
Bomb quakes, activating all traps within room.

Thunder Volt Floor 65 7 4100
Lightning strikes rod, electrifies water and other electric traps.

Vacuum Floor Floor 0 12 4300
Floor becomes super magnet; pins victims within 2 block radius.

We have enough for one new trap, and for those interested, Vacuum Floor is the only one that won’t unlock another new trap. In fact, I don’t know how much you know about Kagero (I’m an expert), so I’ll go ahead and give previews of what will be unlocked by the above choices:
Cold Arrow unlocks Laser Arrow, Catastrophe unlocks Hellfire, and Thunder Volt unlocks Volt Magnet.

being an expert, I'm surprised you choice flare rock over volt rock. that must be the best trap in the game. not only does it deal 100 damage, its magnetic too!! but unlike the iron ball, itdoesnt go away until t stops moving, very useful for a magnet floor to roll it back and forth on a target.

Priest Dusk: I agree, your majesty.

King Eclypse: By the way, what are you doing here?

King Eclypse: You should go and fight along with the guards.

Priest Dusk: Me? You can’t be serious, your majesty.

King Eclypse: I’m very serious!

King Eclypse: Now get going! Get out of here!

Looks like there will be a 7th opponent in this chapter, and there’s no hint what Priest Dusk’s stats are until he shows up.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/405.jpg

Bloodhorn: Yes.

Galdrake: Hmm. I don’t know… but regardless, we have to destroy her.

This is a good starting position, all things considered, but I doubt later enemies will continue to spawn at the front entrance.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/406.jpg

Bloodhorn is first through the door, but Galdrake is very close behind. Galdrake’s triple fireball attack isn’t too hard to dodge as long as there’s room to do so. Bloodhorn, does not share his companion’s fire resistance, and receives a Lava Vase + Fire Ball gift set of his own, courtesy of PANTS.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/407.jpg

Smash Floor into the trigger zone for the Guillotine, and the first opponent is down. He didn’t live very long (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showthread.php?t=5170) at all, I'd estimate less than a second looking at the charge time for Fire Ball.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/408.jpg

Galdrake gets a hit in while PANTS is trying to retreat, and it looks like she’s going to be pincered in that central room. I expect Loongear to show up first, but the traps are set up for the other door. *sigh*

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/409.jpg

The Flare rock hasn’t finished charging by the time Loongear enters the fray, but the Attack Wall does its job, and launches him into position. Thunder Volt creates a line of electricity to other electrical traps in the room, in this case, the Volt Wall. I’m not sure I ever tried, but I believe a Volt Magnet and Thunder Volt in this room would create a “V” connecting the three.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/410.jpg

The Flare Rock barrels over, but fails to kill Loongear, and PANTS begins another strategic withdrawal. It looks like the NPCs try to regroup before attacking, so Loongear is still walking in a straight line between the Thunder Volt and the Volt Wall…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/411.jpg

The lightning line * ELECTROCUTES * Loongear! Loongear is dead!!
Vermilion also spawns in a flanking position, I hope they don’t all do that.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/412.jpg

Thunder Volt barely finishes charging in time to shock Galdrake and stun him for the Flare Rock’s crushing assault. The Fire Ball flies way overhead, but I didn’t have many better options for the wall trap. The game wouldn’t let me place a wall trap on top of the Volt Wall already in place.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/413.jpg

Ack!! Vermilion got here a lot faster than I was expecting!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/414.jpg

Lava Vase’s 3 second charge time is crucial here, though he’d already changed course and the Attack Wall doesn’t put him where I was expecting. I’m not complaining though, as the pitfall does very respectable damage considering his armor.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/415.jpg

Charge faster Power Magnet! Charge Faster!!
Damn. You’d think full plate would conduct electricity a little better than that, but that’s why I have an Iron Ball nearby, too.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/416.jpg

Yes, I have both Flare Rock and Iron Ball equipped this chapter. Flare Rock does more damage and looks better, but isn’t magnetic.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/417.jpg

Priest Dusk shows up just as the door behind PANTS opens, but fortunately Galdrake doesn’t have line of sight to attack before PANTS can get away.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/418.jpg

Galdrake is limping from prior injuries, so the Power Magnet and Thunder Volt easily finish him off.

Not like I haven’t used this exact combination before.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/421.jpg

That blue-white glow means he’s regenerating, but he’s also still burning. I’m not sure which would win out in the end, but Fire Ball has finished charging.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/422.jpg

The Fireball almost looks like it ricochets off the fireplace, but it’s probably just exploding on impact. Gilardes still hasn’t shown up, but Zodiac is already at the door…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/423.jpg

It may be hard to tell from the first two screenshots, but Zodiac didn’t step all the way into the room and the Lava Vase missed. Instead, he’s charging up for his nasty homing lightning bolt that doesn’t require line of sight.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/424.jpg

Zodiac can’t see PANTS with the several intervening elevation charges, so he gets the same treatment as Loongear. Unfortunately, he seems to be immune to electricity. Figures, really.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/425.jpg

PANTS has barely started to run out of the room and Zodiac already has already healed a big chunk of the damage he just took. That sucks.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/426.jpg

PANTS hides behind the corner to lure Zodiac just far enough into the room to Smash Floor him across the room. HE CAN HEAL HIMSELF WHILE PRONE!? ARRGH!!!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/427.jpg

The Lava Vase makes him walk into the floor spikes.., but… he floats off the spike square and now he can see me! RUN!!!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/428.jpg

I hate him so much. Damn he hits hard!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/429.jpg

Another Smash Floor at the door while PANTS hides behind a corner, but it’s almost the only way to fight this guy. I was not expecting him to get caught and sliced up by the ceiling fan, but I’ll take whatever death I can get on this guy. I’m just glad he ran out of heals, or whatever.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/430.jpg

Finally, Gilardes shows up, but PANTS seriously needs healing. The closest Healing Loon is in the front entrance room, but PANTS can probably get there before Gilardes.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/431.jpg

Now at full health, PANTS is ready for mighty Gilardes. First: Power Magnet into a Smash Floor into a Lava Vase. Although that Lava Vase did a disconcertingly low amount of damage…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/432.jpg

The Lava Vase was to get him to run forward into an Attack Wall that would turn him around. I’m not sure what that bright light after the Rising Floor hits is about; he’s glowing, but he isn’t healing…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/433.jpg

1 damage from Lava Vase!? 1 damage from Floor Spikes!? Oh god, that glow must be some temporary invulnerability or something. RUN AWAY!!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/434.jpg

The last time we needed to take out a really tough opponent (Spartus) the small room with the false roof was invaluable for dealing the massive damage needed. I had a Power Magnet in there just in case PANTS needed to trigger the false roof again to kill him.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/435.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/437.jpg

Sure, blame PANTS. Didn’t Yocal warn you about neglecting her education or something? Oh well, now that I know Smash Floor will send him to the ceiling fan, I do so.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/438.jpg

PANTS isn’t going to stick around any longer than she has to, the King isn’t dead, so he’s still dangerous.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/439.jpg

Oh course he regenerates! How do you like your new crown, your majesty?

Leopold: Yes, sir.

Angela: Captain Keith.

Keith: Angela?

Angela: Yes, sir.

Angela: The search party has just reported that the King, the priest and 8 bodyguards have escaped to the ruins.

Keith: The ruins.

Keith: They’re trying to buy time.

Keith: Angela, you go ahead and wait there with the search party.

Lombard: Angela.

Lombard: I’m sorry, but can you pretend that I didn’t hear the captain’s order?

Angela: What?

Lombard: I can’t let Captain Keith kill the King.

Lombard: If the Capt. kills the King, they’ll think this was merely his quest for power. Someone else must kill the King.

Lombard: Captain Keith will play an important role in unifying the country after the King’s death.

Angela: Lombard. You’re volunteering to get your hands dirty with this?

Angela: Understood. I never said a word to you about the captain’s order.

Angela: I, too, will dirty my hands in killing the King.

Ah, a nice, relaxing chapter with only 3 opponents. And no shenanigans with extra enemies showing up later! These guys came in looking for a fight, so there’ll be no sparing them.

Place Damage Charge Cost
Cold Arrow Wall 32 4 4000
Cold air shoots from mask, freezing victim.

Volt Magnet Wall 50 10 3800
Electric magnet attracts and jolts victims from 4 blocks away.

Catastrophe Floor 0 8 4300
Bomb quakes, activating all traps within room.

Vacuum Floor Floor 0 12 4300
Floor becomes super magnet; pins victims within 2 block radius.

We have 9857 Ark, so we can pick up any two of the above traps. It’s not a huge list anymore, but there’s also only 5 chapters left in the game. Since Volt Rock was brought up, I’ll share the final prerequisite list:

Volt Magnet unlocks Judgement (a more powerful Thunder Volt) which then unlocks Volt Rock

Cold Arrow unlocks Laser Arrow

Catastrophe unlocks Hellfire (a more powerful Blast Bomb)

Vacuum Floor unlocks nothing

Personally, my pick for best trap in the game is Evil Kick, which is the reward for beating the game with the “bad” ending. Evil Kick is like a cross between Buzz Saw and Attack Wall with the disadvantages of neither.

well actually, I came up with 3 combos using the volt rock. depending on where its used, in water, to electrocute the enemy then use a wall trap to push it into them. plus pushng it to the enemy within range of attack wall is very effective. especially when the wall throws them back down a flight of stairs as the volt rock will inflict damage THREE times in one use on the enemy, letting me kill guys with 200 hp in one combo. so I know what I'm talking about

I’m not sure what the term for a “pyromaniac, but with electricity” is, but you guys seem to fit that heading. Therefore, I went ahead and bought Volt Magnet and its successor, Judgement, for this chapter. Here are the stats for Judgement:

Place Damage Charge Cost
Judgement Floor 85 9 5300
Lightning strikes rising pillar, runs current through water.

Lombard: If you say it’s so, it must be right.

Angela: There can’t be another exit.

Lombard: Let’s search for another exit.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/446.jpg

Note: the game does not give you a choice here, PANTS simply nods her head once.

Lombard: What? Are you saying that you killed the King, the priest, and the other soldiers all by yourself?

Angela: We should thank you.

Angela: Let’s go home, Lombard.

Lombard: I am grateful that she killed the King, but she also killed my friends.

Lombard: I can’t let her go!

Angela: Lombard!

Angela: We have no choice, but to fight her.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/447.jpg

Obviously, PANTS has to flee. But the next room is ideally suited for trying out the two new electricity traps, so it’s not a problem.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/448.jpg

Lombard seems to be alone, but Angela is just hiding in his shadow and starts crawling out of his feet once he’s been hit once.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/449.jpg

Angela seemingly can’t be hit until she has fully materialized, and by that point she immediately teleports to attack PANTS. No cheap hits this time, I know your tricks!

It looks like Angela is back in Lombard’s shadow, but at least he’ll be easy to take out.

Angela is damn good; she can hide in a ninja’s shadow! Oboro is almost to within the Volt Magnet’s range… oh crap! I didn’t even see what he did to blind PANTS, probably a shuriken of blindness or something. Well this sucks.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/453.jpg

It’s still worth using the Volt Magnet; Oboro would have to walk through the field to get to melee range. Once he gets hit the first time, then he can be Smash Floored over into the Iron Maiden for the kill shot. I wonder where Angela is..?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/454.jpg

Hey, guys, I just started reading this thread and I wanted to make sure to get my vote in to spare Daar, the simple villager. He seems nice enough. I hope I'm not too late.

Keith: Thank you. I appreciate your support, but I have no interest in power.

Shya: But, captain.

Geizer: HAH! HAH! HAH!

Geizer: What else could we expect from you?

Keith: Am I speaking nonsense?

Geizer: ok. That is the Keith that I know. Power? Let the humans have it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/462.jpg

Shya: It’s totally understandable. You don’t need to be sorry.

Shya: I will see to it that our friends are well avenged!

Leopold: Yes. Thank you.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/463.jpg

Two moderately fast melee opponents several rooms away? This mission starts off easily enough.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/464.jpg

Well, technically, Shya saw PANTS first, but you’ll get your turn to join your brother…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/465.jpg

I could have sworn there were enemies capable of dodging Spring/Smash Floors, but I guess if the trap is set off before the enemy is fully in the room it can’t dodge? By the time the Buzz Saw hits, it looks like Leopold is closing in on PANTS.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/466.jpg

Leopold got a little too close for comfort, but PANTS is faster than any NPC (even Assassins, Shadows, or Ninjas).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/467.jpg

Looks like Izayoi is going to show up at some point in the middle of dealing with Leopold. As long as he doesn’t use a darkness attack, Ninjas in general do so little damage that they aren’t worth worrying about too much.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/468.jpg

Sorry, Izayoi. I’m just not afraid of your damage. That 0 Ark is the penalty for re-using Lava Vase twice in one combo. I considered also equipping Oil Vase instead of Iron Ball just to have this hit be worth some Ark…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/469.jpg

Just keep running into the wall until Judgement finishes charging.
Here's a guessing game: try to guess what Leopold’s cause of death will be listed as at the end of the chapter!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/470.jpg

Izayoi is too close to set up a combo for him, so PANTS just keeps running. But the Buzz Saw is still aimed at the doorway…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/471.jpg

We’ve got a Volt Magnet set to grab him as soon as he steps through the door…
Damn Ninjas! If he could just teleport into the room, why’d he let himself get hit by the Buzz Saw?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/472.jpg

Now that he’s remembered he doesn’t need doors, he teleports past the trap setup and hits PANTS as she tries to run past. The Volt Magnet wasn’t set off in time, so PANTS is reduced to her last resort. Didn’t I say before (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=205468&postcount=66) that “large explosions are the only surefire way to take out ninjas”? Yes, PANTS took damage, but Izayoi is dead, so it’s worth it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/473.jpg

PANTS picks herself up off the floor, and prepares to face the final two opponents…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/474.jpg

In this instance of the race between movement speed and charge time, PANTS is fortunate. Since enemies try to avoid room devices, they will almost always take set paths to avoid walking along the arc of a pendulum or underneath the ceiling fan. That’s how I know I can set a Smash Floor in that corner space and the enemy will walk on it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/475.jpg

I was hoping to Buzz Saw Inferno into the “Casket” but somehow he avoided that fate. It’s hard to tell from the second panel, but a trap name will start glowing and pulsing when an enemy is in range, so I know Geizer is standing on the Smash Floor.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/476.jpg

Well, that’s PANTS’ cue to run. Nothing more can be accomplished here, hopefully it wears off before the next room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/477.jpg

Inferno?! Even with 80% of his health gone, he’s still faster than Geizer? Well that sort of ruins my plans for this room, but no sense letting him live.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/478.jpg

Geizer can see the active magnetic field and is smart enough to not walk into it. PANTS tries to lure him, but it’s too late. The field disappears and Geizer charges. PANTS barely steps away, and this guy does as much damage in melee as Zodiac did with ranged. Fortunately, Geizer’s charging slash goes in a straight line, so it’s fairly dodgeable.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/479.jpg

There he is, just wait for him to… oh god, NO! I don’t know how he missed, I guess he could see me behind the corner, but couldn’t make a straight line charge? No matter, I guess it’s time for the next room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/480.jpg

Good old Lava Vase. PANTS makes sure to not stand in a direct line so Geizer moves nice and slow.

Finally we’re starting to eat away at his hp, and I’m pleasantly surprised that his invulnerability doesn’t protect from the second hit of fire damage.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/482.jpg

Geizer is a ruthless, terrifyingly relentless pursuer. Every time I think I’m gaining ground, he charges to close. By the time PANTS is the next room, Geizer is right behind again.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/483.jpg

PANTS keeps running (not shown) and is finally able to put some distance between them. Volt Magnet with a Judgement on the opposite wall is a guaranteed line of electricity that finally does him in.

Warken: We’ll get nothing if we die here.

Claudia: I’m not worried. You’ll protect me, right?

Warken: Of course.

Zevergine: I was expecting another fight! Oh, well. I’d better just take the grail and get out of here.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/489.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/490.jpg

I wonder what part of Warken’s lifestyle Claudia’s parents find objectionable?

Place Damage Charge Cost
Cold Arrow Wall 32 4 4000
Cold air shoots from mask, freezing victim.

*Laser Arrow Wall 85 8 4800
Electric arrow shoots from mask and impales victim upon impact.

Catastrophe Floor 0 8 4300
Bomb quakes, activating all traps within room.

*Hellfire Floor 85 11 4800
Pillar of fire extends 1 block, blowing victims 5 blocks away.

Vacuum Floor Floor 0 12 4300
Floor becomes super magnet; pins victims within 2 block radius.

Volt Rock Ceiling 100 11 7000
Electric rock knocks victim down and can electrify water.

I went ahead and included the remaining unlockable traps in the list of choices, and 10599 Ark can buy any trap on the list. Unfortunately, I think I was overly optimistic about getting all the traps. I overlooked the fact that Ark earned in the final chapter is useless.

More importantly, Keith will return this chapter, and we need to decide which ending to pick. Should PANTS kill Keith, or… not? I know there have been several requests for the latter, but if you want to see Keith dead, speak up now!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/492.jpg

Interesting starting position, PANTS won’t have to wait long before the lovebirds show up. They aren’t really looking for the grail, they just have a kinky murder fetish.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/493.jpg

Warken arrives first, which I’m sure Claudia is used to. The Smash Floor doesn’t knock him into the Pendulum, but you can see I’ve planned for that. That third screenshot is not a Pendulum hit, it’s only the Lava Vase…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/494.jpg

There’s the Pendulum hit. He’s not dead though, he has 2 hp left. A shame the Attack Wall only did 1 damage, or I’d try killing him with that just for the novelty value.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/495.jpg

You guys are used to my usual modus operandi (Smash Floor, Attack Wall, Lava Vase), but here I just continue the silliness longer than usual.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/496.jpg

Spring Floor and Smash Floor, Oil Vase and Lava Vase, all in the same combo? Well the reason to go through all those extra steps is because, all told, the final combo is worth nearly 2500 Ark from a single opponent.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/497.jpg

After being doused with oil, Claudia burns to death. That’s pretty horrible, but I guess it could be worse (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=8wgwZuXA6UA).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/499.jpg

Warken is so slow now that Zevergine shows up first. If I were Zevergine and was about to walk past someone as badly injured as Warken, I would seriously reconsider being here. With some electromagnetic aid, these two are set up perfectly to test out the brand new Volt Rock. Volt Rock uses so much electricity the lights dim when you set it off!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/500.jpg

Zevergine is immobilized and Warken is too slow to dodge anything, so they both die at nearly the exact same time.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/501.jpg

It would have been a touching moment if I could have arranged Claudia and Warken to die together at the same time. Oh well.
We have no hint why Omega shows up, maybe he was friends with Sigma or something?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/502.jpg

I still don’t know why Omega is here, but he’s probably not looking for friendship or networking.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/503.jpg

The Attack Wall flings him forward into a second hit from the Volt Rock which gives a fair amount of Ark. I think the penalty for multiple hits from the same trap is actually tied to multiple activations; a situation like this is worth the full amount.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/504.jpg

Keith: Do I really have to fight her?

As promised, Keith shows up unannounced and seems unsure of the right thing to do. He starts at the back entrance, so we can choose pretty much any room to face him.

Killrain: A human girl? Don’t make me laugh. We can’t be beaten by one human girl.

Desfard: Killrain, even the King, the priest, and their bodyguards have been killed by the girl.

Killrain: …..

Desfard: You’ll lose your life if you underestimate her abilities.

Killrain: I’m sorry.

Desfard: Understand, everybody?

Desfard: You must think of her as a devil in human skin.

Desfard: Never be caught off guard when you fight!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/512.jpg

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/513.jpg

Place Damage Charge Cost
Cold Arrow Wall 32 4 4000

Catastrophe Floor 0 8 4300

Vacuum Floor Floor 0 12 4300

So we have 10285 Ark which will buy either Laser Arrow or Hellfire. I can probably get enough Ark this chapter to afford the other one, but I couldn’t promise that. Vacuum Floor is basically just a really big (5x5) Magnet Floor and will probably be left behind (unless there is a sudden demand for it, of course).

Is catastophe all that good or interesting?

Honestly, not really. It basically just does the same thing as Quake Bomb, but affects the whole room. Quake Bomb itself isn't that great, it only really has a single purpose (http://www.toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=219878&postcount=173).

All that said, I'm pretty sure I've picked up Hellfire over Laser Arrow many times in the past. I'm not sure I recall why other than perhaps liking the name or the big explosion.

This sucks. Good thing there’s that door to the north.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/516.jpg

Melee characters without special movement abilities are very easy to bait into traps. Killrain just walks up to PANTS and is surprised when the lights go out and the ground starts shaking. Catastrophe causes an earthquake that prevents anyone in the room (including PANTS) from moving. PANTS has to set off the Volt Rock first though, or else Killrain will have been thrown aside by the Attack Wall before the Volt Rock even lands.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/517.jpg

After being flung past/through the Volt Rock, Killrain takes a second hit of Catastrophe before the giant Boulder crushes him.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/518.jpg

Your Mom was kidding when she named you!! I wonder if Killord will present similar opportunities.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/519.jpg

For the first time, PANTS is fighting in the grail room; I try to avoid rooms with yellow waterfalls. The room has a built in Volt Rod trap that connect to other electricity traps like Thunder Volt or Judgement, but does fairly weak damage. Hellfire explosions are pretty impressive.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/520.jpg

The Hellfire throws Valmer pretty high, and he hits the electricity line a second time. Had my timing been perfect, he would have landed on the Volt Magnet for the finishing blow and a 5-hit combo, instead he survives with 2 hp.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/521.jpg

By the time he regains his footing and starts inching back, the Volt Magnet has recharged and the Volt Rod kills him. From the way the enemies are progressing, it looks like PANTS might stay here for a while.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/522.jpg

Wall-based magnets slide down from the ceiling, so the lightning line starts diagonally, and sort of “chops” downward onto our foe. Nice thing about that line is I can be reasonably certain he’s lined up for the explosion to blast him directly along it.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/523.jpg

The Volt Rock steals the Volt Magnet’s line, but it won’t matter; the rock crushes Killord in midair.

Does he think they can hear him? Well, I guess this chapter has a “mother” theme, then. Desfard is slow enough that it looks like PANTS can finally leave this room. Good thing, too, since Shoguns usually require an exit strategy (even if it’s back into this room) once they go invulnerable.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/525.jpg

You can’t tell from the first screenshot, but I’m using the see-through-walls glitch again; normally, the Lava Vase would be just out of sight. The magnet pulls Desfard more slowly than it would pull lesser opponents, but I just want to get him into range of the Hellfire.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/526.jpg

The Hellfire Pendulum combo sounds totally badass. As soon as I know where he’s going to land, I set up an Oil Vase there that just barely charges in time to keep up the combo.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/527.jpg

Fire Ball and Smash Floor also each barely charge in time to continue the combo, and Desfard burns to death on the floor. The Smash Floor was completely superfluous for the damage and positioning, I just wanted another 600+ Ark combo hit. I guess the fact that he was lying on the floor was worthwhile, too, but PANTS could have just run away and waited for him to die.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/528.jpg

Finally, “mom” shows up and lets PANTS choose the site of their battle.

Yocal: I came here today…

Yocal: …to fight you.

Yocal: You may start your attack.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/530.jpg

Yocal can be dangerous if you let her. She has the same homing lightning bolt attack that Zodiac had, she regenerates, and potentially most frightening of all, she can set off PANTS’ traps! We’ve come this far without taking damage, so I’m not going to stand under a Volt Rock to demonstrate.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/531.jpg

Um… thanks?

Place Damage Charge Cost

*Laser Arrow Wall 85 8 4800
Electric arrow shoots from mask and impales victim upon impact.

Vacuum Floor Floor 0 12 4300

10135 Ark isn’t enough for everything left, so Vacuum Floor will probably be left behind. In later playthroughs, there are more traps to buy for each ending that is unlocked, so it becomes much harder to afford everything.

Well, the place still seems to be empty. I guess PANTS should go explore…

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/535.jpg

Stepping through the door causes enemies to suddenly appear, surrounding PANTS. This map is much smaller than what we’ve gotten used to, so there will be a lot of running from room to room.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/536.jpg

That is not a yes or no question, and PANTS is thus unable to answer him. (I bet middle school was a miserable experience for him with that name). Berdick advances menacingly, but PANTS dodges around the electric chair to find an unoccupied room to set traps in.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/537.jpg

I had removed Volt Magnet and Fire Ball to make room for Cold Arrow and Laser Arrow, so I substituted Magnet Floor back into the mix. Apparently, we’d never picked up the initial trap bonus for the Wall Spears, but that is quickly rectified here. Twice.

I had originally planned for Berdick, but Bashburn instead shows up from the other door. Oil Vase charges quickly enough to initiate a combo, and Hellfire finishes charging just as Bashburn has gotten the Oil Vase off of his head, but before he’s ready to start chasing again.

The Cold Arrow freezes him in place just as he’s trying to stand up, and we just need to wait for the Spring Floor to finish charging.

While activating the Lava Vase, Berdick gets a good hit in, but Bashburn is forced to run headlong into the fireplace. Time to run some more!

I know we never got the Initial Trap bonus from the swinging Meat Hook in this room, but Magnet Floor and Cold Arrow once again oblige. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any good shots of the hit itself.

Pendulum-type traps always knock the victim 1 square sideways so I have a Volt Rock waiting to not quite finish him off. Meanwhile, Bashburn has recovered from his bashes and burns and has revenge in mind.

Bashburn is too slow and his path takes him through the recently recharged Magnet Floor. On its backswing, the Meat Hook then slams into the back of his head for a no doubt messy death.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/545.jpg

Berdick broke free of the ice encasing him, but he can’t hobble away fast enough from a pulpifying Volt Rock. I have to assume “married” is a sanitized translation, and with a name like his, I’m not surprised.

Great, another Magician. Zodiac was a real pain, and this castle has less room to stay out of Valvolt’s line of sight.

Fun fact about Buddhists: they hate being alone and will ignore you to go regroup with an NPC ally.

Just because PANTS was away on a business trip, you guys think you can move in? Who do you think you are, Goldilocks?

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/549.jpg

The big disappoint: Laser Arrow isn’t really a laser at all. It’s just a high damage arrow that deals electricity damage and pierces through the enemy to potentially hit another opponent.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/550.jpg

Now that he can’t back up anyone else, Roshwald comes for a relatively formulaic demise. The Attack Wall throws him just over the Volt Chair, but I have a Spring Floor to toss him back.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/551.jpg

That worked. The Oil Vase is just to hold him in place until the Cold Arrow charges, and the Cold Arrow is just to hold him in place until the Hellfire charges.

Those dying words make absolutely no sense in the final chapter.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b140/Zithuan/Kagero/553.jpg

The chapter isn’t over yet, we still have (at least) one more fairly unimpressive foe to get through.

Only noteworthy thing here is that the Spring Floor has to be set off as soon as possible. Velvet is a self-healer, and can heal while prone if given a second to catch her breath.

Lumber Saw for the deathblow. Ummm… Not too perceptive, are you?

The final chapter doesn’t give a summary, so here’s a manual one:

Velvet (Voodoo) - Dismembered by Lumber Saw
Valvolt (Magician) - Toasted by Laser Arrow
Roshwald (Busshist) - Blasted by Hellfire
Bashburn (Crusher) - Cracked Skull by Hook
Maage (Brute) - Impaled by Wall Spear
Berdick (Knight) - Smash & Shock by Volt Rock

Keith: PANTS, I don’t want to lose you.

Keith: That day…

Keith: Julia and I went down town to play. And I happened to see you with the Timenoid.

Keith: Our parents believed me even though I was so young at the time.

Keith: They went immediately to the house of the Timenoids. They never came back.

Keith: I believed my parents were killed by the Timenoids.

Keith: And that childhood intuition has finally been proven right.

Keith: The Timenoids can’t maintain their immortality unless they sacrifice the humans.

Keith: This mission was based on nothing but my own thirst for revenge. And many people have died because of it.

Keith: I’m no different than the Timenoids who have sacrificed so many humans for their own personal reasons.

Keith: PANTS. It wasn’t you who killed my friends.

Keith: It was me. I… I sent my friends to their deaths!

Keith: Maybe human are only capable of living for selfish reasons after all.

Keith: Let’s go, PANTS.

Keith: There is no place in this country…

Keith: …where we can stay.

Yeah... that's not even being subtle about it.

I don’t know how much Ark I earned in the final chapter, but some quick calculations reveal that I apparently earned 132880 Ark. That seems unlikely, so I assume the game adds in the value of every trap purchased? If that’s the case, I earned 15880 Ark, which is still high enough to be questionable.

Ending #3 awards “Ardebaran” a Vase type trap that inflicts more damage and charges faster than Lava Vase:

Place Damage Charge Cost
Ardebaran Ceiling 70 2 3500
Wearers of this cursed mask become lifeless and confused.

Finally, the game keeps track of how many times each trap is used (whether or not it hits). Here are the top 10 most used traps:

44 Attack Wall
44 Lava Vase
36 Smash Floor
19 Spring Floor
16 Iron Ball
14 Power Magnet
13 Fire Ball
11 Oil Vase
10 Flare Rock
10 Volt Magnet

So there we have it! The last time I played through this game was over 8 years ago, so I had fun just having an excuse to play through again. Hopefully you guys were entertained as well!

Time permitting, I may update this thread with the other endings and demonstrations of the unlocked traps, but FFIV DS comes out tomorrow, and I wouldn’t mind a break anyway.

Man, when you guys said "incest ending," you meant incest ending.

Still, though! This was fun! It inspired me to try to play through the series a little while back, too. Unfortunately, that plan kind of fell through about fifteen minutes into the original Deception. It isn't as fun as I remembered!

That incest baby...

You know, I always thought I would have a joke ready when I finally looked into its too-wide eyes.

Oh no, the incest baby is real. I loved how this final battle was against a random set of enemies rather than anyone who actually mattered.

"Total Soul Suck" hehehehe.

hey guys, I was playing this game when I stubled upon a combo that gives lots of ark and its really simple. it involves the room in the kings castle with the boulder hanging over the stairs. all u need is a vase trap, a bear type trap and attack wall, this won't work with press wall, spike wall or evil kick.basically set the bear trap in the space between the huge oil barrel at the top of the stairs and the wall closest to it; then place attack wall right there so the it can push the enemy and the barrel. hit an enemy with a vase that will cause them to blindy stumble into whatever bear trap u choose use the bear trap. then activate the attack wall to send them towards the barrel which will start rolling and hit them 3 times. since the barrel breaks after it hits a wall. it can only be done once per chapter. but if u can get atleast 3 hits BEFORE the attack wall, like a vase then a cold arrow once they're on the bear trap. then u can use the bear trap and switch the cold arrow with the attack wall in the spot that it need to be. if u do this to one person each chapter , u will leave with so much ark u might think u cheated. if a chapter has someone with more than 150 hp,I highly recomend using this combo on them if u want traps like volt rock, flare rock, laser arrow, and hellfire by chapters 13-15 not to mention all the traps needed to even buy these!!
