Today's thread brought to you by the fine folks at Game Freak, the fine folks who brought us Mendel Palace, the Game Boy Camera, Drill Dozer, and little known gem of a series called Pokémon.

This installment is from the Third Generation of games, the Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald series, which introduced a handful of new features, and took out some old ones.

Of the four generations of games though, I'd say that R/S/E are probably among my least favorite. A lot of the new species introduced never really appealed much to me, Hoenn wasn't exactly an exciting place, and I really disliked the starter set they offered, especially as they evolved.

Not that that really matters for this LP, but I'll get around to that later. Here's the first of the Legendaries for this generation, Groudon.

And here's Cloverfield! I mean, Kyogre.

07-30-2008, 06:12 PM
And on clear evening that suddenly cloud up, you too may be lucky enough to see the final Legendary...

I don't think I want to live in Hoenn, actually. The threat of giant dragons in the sky just showing up like that would be too much for me. Clearly the Pokémon world is scarier than all of its media makes it out to be.

My name is Birch. But everyone calls me the Pokémon Professor.

This is a slight nitpick, but just how many of these guys are there? Elm, Birch, Oak.... Do they just hand out Pokémon doctorates to every guy with a tree themed name? Because if so, I believe a name change is in order.

Awww, Birch has a Lotad (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Lotad_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)!

The world is widely inhabited by creatures known as Pokémon. We humans live alongside Pokémon, sometimes as friendly playmates, and at times as cooperative workmates. And sometimes, we band together and battle others like us. But despite our closeness, we don't know everything about Pokémon. In fact, there are many, many secretes surrounding Pokémon. To unravel Pokémon mysteries, I've been undertaking research.

That's what I do. And you are...?

And now it's time for the first three major choices of the thread folks! I'm sure this is the very moment you've been waiting for.

First, we have to decide on our sex. While this is purely cosmetic, I'd say it's a pretty nice choice. And at least they (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/42/Brendan_May_Emerald.PNG) look better than the sprites offered for Fire Red and Leaf Green (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a6/FR-LG-WB_Pok%C3%A9mon_Trainers.png). Nowhere near as cool as Ocelot (http://archives.bulbagarden.net/w/upload/3/35/ArtKoki.jpg) though.

After that, we need a name. Are we PANTS?

No, no we are not. Think of a different name. Please. It could be SHORTS for all I care, but no PANTS.

And finally, the third choice. Now, this is where I would usually offer between the three normal starters (Mudkip, Treecko, and Torchic), but I'm going to be frank, I'm bored of that. I dislike the Fire Water Grass starter system Pokémon games have gotten themselves into. It was great once or twice, but how about a little variety? There are a lot of other different types that could get some loving. Like bug types. Or flying types. Or that whole Dark and Steel thing they introduced in the Second Generation.

So instead, I offer you this. Choose a completely different pokémon. Choose one you haven't seen much of. One of your favorites that isn't over powered. Choose one to screw me over if you so please, I'm leaving my early game to you folks. There are a few stipulations, however.

No legendaries (Birds, Beasts, or otherwise)
No ghost or dragon types
No fire/grass/water types

The first two are just to prevent overpowering the game, and the last is to see some types that just don't get used. Want to stick me with a Farfetch'd (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Farfetch%27d) (Oh please god yes, stick me with a Farfetch'd), go ahead! Would you rather see Mareep (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mareep) get some love? That's fine too! You've got all of Bulbapedia (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Main_Page) and Serebii.net (http://www.serebii.net/index2.shtml) at your disposal, so choose well! Farfetch'd!

The thing'll also need a nickname. And while I'm at it, if you want any game mechanics explained, ask here and I'll make sure to cover it at some point during the play through. I'll try to cover as many as I can, especially the EV system, but I may forget one or two along the way.

So have at!

EDIT: Here's where the choices stand, as of Friday at 2:41 PM EST:

Protagonist - Girl, Maple (5) or Willow (1). Either way, it looks like we're going to be setting world of Pokémon Professoring ablaze with our complete lack of male parts. Glass ceiling, here we come!

Pokémon - A note before I begin, however. Some of you (PappillonReel, Shivam) chose Water/Fire types, which is clearly not allowed according to rule 3. Shedinja is also partially a ghost type, so it's disqualified as well. Sorry! But you can choose again!

Secondly, I know that there are a lot of choices, and there are some really hard ones to make. If it helps your choice at all, I'm putting extra weight behind those Pokémon who can't be caught in Emerald at all. I intend to catch as many as I can, so we can build a team of those later. If enough people vote for one we can catch, then I will start with them. And if your vote doesn't get in, don't worry! I have other plans!

No need for the list anymore, thanks for voting.

Please pick the girl, because the boy is wearing baggy shorts over black jeans and that is too stupid to deal with.

Also, for your starter please get a Mr. Mime.

07-30-2008, 06:57 PM
Pick the girl.

I'd say that I want to see Zangoose, but he's not in Emerald, is he? Frown.

The reason Game Freak goes with the Fire/Water/Grass triad to start, as I discovered when I first tried to make my own Pokemon game (don't ask), is because they cycle. Very few of the other types in the game Rock/Paper/Scissors against each other so well.

07-30-2008, 07:04 PM
Zangoose (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Zangoose) is from 3rd Gen, and he isn't catchable, which is a bonus.

For the record, I found a hack that allows me to substitute any pokemon in. It doesn't matter if it was obtainable or not, it can be thrown into one of the original pokéballs. So the field is completely open as far as species goes.

07-30-2008, 07:11 PM
I say go with a girl, looks better than the Naruto reject. Um, can't think of any names... uh, Skirt maybe, to go with the whole Pants thing that people like so much?

And maybe an Eevee for the starter, if it's not overpowered or anything? I haven't played Pokemon since like Pokemon blue on the gameboy so I don't know what's uber powerful, since Psychic seemed to be the dominant type in Blue.

07-30-2008, 07:45 PM
Girl named Maple. Let's get that degree!

07-30-2008, 07:58 PM
The reason Game Freak goes with the Fire/Water/Grass triad to start, as I discovered when I first tried to make my own Pokemon game (don't ask), is because they cycle. Very few of the other types in the game Rock/Paper/Scissors against each other so well.
Here are some types that also Rock/Paper/Scissors quite well:

* Flying->Fighting->Rock
* Flying->Ground->Rock
* Flying->Ground->Electric
* Psychic->Fighting->Dark
* Ice->Grass->Rock
* Ice->Ground->Steel

Some of these lack the features of Fire->Grass->Water, though: three super-effectives in one direction, and three ineffectives in the other.

As for a Pokémon choice...

* Beldum
Pro - Steel type! Psychic type! Evolves twice! Evolves quickly!
Con - Your only move is Take Down until level 20.

* Eevee
Pro - Evolves in five directions, whatever your choice!
Con - Your only damaging move is Tackle until level 23 or evolution.

* Ralts
Pro - Gets Confusion at level 6. Evolves twice!
Con - Quite frail. Next damaging move is Psychic at level 26 as Kirlia.

* Machop
Pro - Starts with Low Kick and learns Karate Chop quickly. Evolves twice!
Con - Commonplace. Third evolution requries trading.

* Anorith
Pro - Fossil: get this and Lileep in the same file! Rare Bug/Rock types.
Con - Only damaging attack is Scratch until level 19.

07-30-2008, 08:30 PM
Girl named Maple. Let's get that degree!

I like your forward-thinking-ness.

Also: Charmander if you can, plzkthx.

07-30-2008, 08:36 PM
I can't narrow it down to just one, so I suggest Porygon, Delibird, Koffing, or Tyrogue for your starter. Also, you must catch a Shroomish, I love his face. |:<

Yea, it's the easy way out. I think they could do it with Psychic, Fighting and Dark though. What I really want is a pokemon game where you start with Eevee. But I guess they'd have to give you the evolution stones pretty early on to prevent it from getting too high and missing some good early moves from the evolutions, right?
Girl named Maple. Let's get that degree!

Break that emerald ceiling!

07-30-2008, 08:59 PM
The "No Ghosts" rule eliminates my favorite Pokemon (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Gengar_(Pokémon)). And his previous forms. :(

So I'm going to second Tyrogue. It'll be exciting to find out which of the three he'll turn into! And he's not normally available in Emerald. And he only naturally has Tackle until level 20. Tyrogue is hardcore.

07-30-2008, 09:02 PM
I don't suppose it's possible for this and the other Pokemon LP to do battle somewhere down the line? I doubt it but damn that'd be neat.

07-30-2008, 09:08 PM
Not via the roms, but they could use their final team in the Netbattle thingy (http://www.tvsian.info/netbattle/) and fight each other like that.

07-30-2008, 09:58 PM
Mary had a little lamb!

...that is, you should pick the girl and give her a Mareep (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/179.shtml). :3

Speaking of :3, Castform (http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/351.shtml) would work. It's several types rolled up in one!

07-30-2008, 10:14 PM
Go for Lickitung, he's the best!

07-30-2008, 10:18 PM
I agree with maple girl, and i want to see poliwhirl.

07-30-2008, 10:27 PM
I can't even imagine how weird that would make the beginning of the game, but I want to find out. Also, he's basically my favorite outside of the Eevee and Vulpix lines, you understand.

07-30-2008, 11:53 PM
Guys, guys, this is obvious...

If it's a girl, call her "Willow".

07-30-2008, 11:53 PM
Farfetch'd is one of my all time favorites, so I vote that you keep him around. I LOVE Farfetch'd.

07-31-2008, 02:21 AM
the correct answer is and always has been Luvdisc.

Spoink is the other correct answer.

07-31-2008, 02:40 AM

This is all that needs to be said.

07-31-2008, 02:49 AM
Take a Ditto, that way you can have all of them at once.

I'm a forward thinker.

Dynastic Bird
07-31-2008, 03:07 AM
I'll have to say Maple. Not because I get the reference- I don't- but it fits!

As for the pokemon...uh, you REALLY need to start narrowing it down. There's about 30 correct answers at the very least. Wobbuffet sounds fun, even if it makes the game really, really weird.

Also, if you pick Tyrogue, don't try to guide it's evolution. Otherwise there's no fun in it!

I am a cruel, cruel man, so I say Shedinja.

On the plus side, unless it gets hit by something Super-Effective against bugs, it's indestructible.

On the downside, Bugs are vulnerable to a lot, and Shedinja's got crap-all for moves and stats.

Also: Maple.

The Dread Cthulhu
07-31-2008, 05:32 AM
Shedinja is yes.

Be aware that if this was Gen 4, I would so be making you use a male Combee.

07-31-2008, 06:03 AM

New to the forums, entered because of Let's Play and just HAD to post here!

I agree that we should start focusing... So agreed to Maple girl and Shedinja - though I really think you should start with a Nincada and get both Ninjask AND Shedinja... I'm just a bug fan (played silver and sapphire in mono-bug challenges.. Good times!)

But you know what would be the coolest? Smeargle. Like, you'd REALLY have to be picky on which attacks he would Sketch...

Also: About the rock-paper-scissors starters... Dark is stronger in a psychic-fighting-dark, since it's immune (not just resistant) to psychic. The only other "tryad" that functions exactly like the grass-fire-water one is flying-fighting-rock. It doesn't work as well as it seems, since no pokémon is purely flying type: A normal/flying would lose its resistance to fighting, and any other type would tend to override the flying type in importance...

Sorry. Getting carried away. Back to the game!

This is all that needs to be said.
Spoink is a Pokémon that leads an unusually fragile existence. It possess no hindlegs and locomotion is achieved by bouncing on its spring tail. However, the bouncing serves a far more vital function in that it keeps its heart beating; if it's stopped from bouncing, it'll go into cardiac arrest and die.
So sad! ;_;

07-31-2008, 07:15 AM
I'm gonna say you should start with a Nosepass.

Someone got me with that the last time I expressed my undying love for Spoink on Talking Time.

But now I've been hardened by the knowledge, and I won't let the thought of...

....poor little...Spoink...

Definitely spoke too soon there, cuz I already found another one: fire>steel>rock... Oh well. Guess I wasn't as thorough as I thought I'd been when I searched that the first time =P

Post updated with a list of stuff that's been voted on, and the time limit. It sucks that I won't be able to play until Monday, but at least then you people have more time. Changing votes is fine, and don't worry too much if your choice doesn't get in. I have plans!

Also, if there isn't a clear leader, I may leave it up to the dice to decide what I'll start with. Just a heads up.

As for the pokemon...uh, you REALLY need to start narrowing it down. There's about 30 correct answers at the very least. Wobbuffet sounds fun, even if it makes the game really, really weird.

You're right, there are at least 30 correct answers. And each of them would impact the game differently. But I've already put a large limitation on it, so what more do I do? What's safe to cut, and what isn't? Consider this an experiment, to see if Talking Time can decide on a single pokémon for a starter.

And if that doesn't work, well. Then it doesn't work. You've all got plenty of time to come to a decision, if that helps.

Regarding Tyrogue: Of course not, but then, I really can't effectively do it in the early game. Without the drugs, you've got to rely on... Let's say different options, for now. I will, however, tell you this: I am 90% certain of what we'll end up with if we choose Tyrogue.

Farfetch'd is one of my all time favorites, so I vote that you keep him around. I LOVE Farfetch'd.
As far as I'm concerned, good sir, you have the only correct answer. Farfetch'd is my all time favorite, so it really hurts me that you really can't catch one during the main game of any of the generations. I don't know what it is about the leek wielding bird, but it's just awesome.

Another awesome one would be Cubone, so I wonder if I just like pokémon that use items.

Be aware that if this was Gen 4, I would so be making you use a male Combee.
I mean this in the most respectful way I can, but you sir, are an asshole. (I would get behind this idea so hard though.)

07-31-2008, 07:53 AM
What's wrong? You don't like mudkips?

My vote goes to Snorlax or Ursaring. I do love me some Normal-types.

Also: it's okay, guys. Spoink keeps bouncing even when he's asleep.

07-31-2008, 07:53 AM

Roselia used Stun Spore!

Spoink is Paralyzed! *bzz* Spoink can no longer bounce!

Spoink has died! *pyew!*

Used Revive on Spoink! ...it's not very effective.

(How do they breed, anyway?)

It can mate with Wailord. Now that's a snuff film. HOT SPOINK ON WAILORD ACTION!

If we're sharing nightmarish visions of Pokemon, here's one. In R/B/Y, your character is out to collect information on all the Pokemon. Which means the information in the Pokedex comes from Red's (or whoever you're playing as) research.

If it senses danger, it will teleport itself to safety even as it sleeps.

Red has attacked a sleeping Abra.

It can go for days without eating a single morsel.

Red has starved a Bulbasaur.

It can easily withstand dynamite blasts without taking damage.

Red has attempted to blow up a Golem.

The Pokemon world is cute and innocent until you start to dig deeper, at which point it becomes a disturbing nightmare world. It's a good thing kids don't think too deeply about these things cause that's a sure path to psychological trauma. The entire G/S subplot about people eating Slowpokes comes to mind. And the fact that Cubones wear their mother's skulls is also pretty frightening.

07-31-2008, 10:08 AM
I'm pretty sure you can catch wild Farfetch'des in Yellow.

I'm pretty sure that the Pokédex data comes from the same informational white hole that the Metroid Prime creature logs come from.

Consider, for instance, the detailed information on the life cycle and social structure of the Ing, a race that only exists on one planet in a parallel dimension that was zapped into existence by an asteroid about 60 weeks before MP2 starts.

* Spoink 2

Well, I really don't want Farfetch'd to be the flagbearer of this game, so I shall vote, in the name of variety, for Spoink. And I strongly recommend that everybody else votes for Spoink as well!

The reasons are very simple!

1) It lives a fragile and fleetingly beautiful existence.

2) Grumpig (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Grumpig_(Pokémon)) is the closest that Pokémon has to Ganon.

3) Take a look at Spoink's level up move list!

Not sure if this has been covered, but even though Spoink can survive Paralysis and Sleep by auto-bouncing, wouldn't being frozen do him in? I mean, with no room to move it'd be heart-attack city.

Maybe his heart is frozen as well, he's in suspended animation, all cryogenic-like. That's it, get a Spoink and name it WaltDisney.

I will only change my vote to Farfetch'd and fairly break the tie on three conditions.

-One, you nickname it and refer to it as "Sir Leekcelot" (that is, LEEKCELOT).
-Two, it is in your party when you fight Steven (http://serebii.net/emerald/steven.shtml).
-Three, and this is more of a formality owing to both the scarcity of Farfetch'd's Flying moves and the opportunities to duel the Rival, but since Grovyle and Combusken are both weak to Flying, the Rival must logically choose the Swampert/Mudkip line.

Since I technically haven't voted yet (Charmander doesn't count because he's a fire type), I'd say go with Wobbuffet for the sheer strangeness of it all.

Since picking up my car took longer than I thought it would, the first update will be coming at a later time tonight.

Sassafrazz for Zigzagoon (it's the fur, see,) Notter or Napolitan for its evolved form. Even if it's missing the strawberry for that last one.

ChainChomp, or Chopper (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stand_by_Me_(film)) (or SicBalls if you go PG-13) for Poochyena. If this were a Mexican audience, I'd say "Chompiras (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Ch%C3%B3mpiras)."

Capistrano for Taillow.

Well, this is LITTLEROOT TOWN. How do you like it? This is our new home! It has a quaint feel to it, but it seems to be easy place to live, don't you think? And you get your own room, Maple! Let's go on inside.

This is so convienent! Maple, your room is upstairs. Go check it out, dear! DAD bought you a new clock to mark our move here. Don't forget to set it!

I don't know about you sometimes, mom. You really seem to take the slave labor of pokemon way too easily sometimes. Though they better not have messed with my stuff.

*Take a good look at these Vigoroth (http://http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Vigoroth_(Pok%C3%A9mon)), folks. We may very well never see them again for the rest of the game. I have to say, this is one of my favorite introduction sequences in the series. It's not that it establishes characters better, per se (except for the protagonist's mom, who is an asshole), but it gives a good glimpse into the life and times of people who live in the world. And it asks you to set up certain choices in the game without making them seem like choices. It really paints a coherent picture. For a Pokemon game.*

And this is my room! Beats where we used to live, but it's pretty barebones.... At least I have a clock now! Now I just have to make sure that those stupid Pokemon didn't screw anything up...

Map of Hoenn, marker on Littleroot. PC, and withdrawing our traditional potion.

Now, how did Dad say to get in? "C://...." No, that's not right. Gahh, I hate DOS. I wish my computer was up to date.

The perpetually broken clock, a Gamecube with a GBA as a controller

Well, great. Looks like the clock's battery is completely dead. Guess I'll never know what time it is, huh. And for some reason, the Gamecube is the most modern thing in my room. When I asked for one, my parents just laughed and got me it. Wonder why, when all they've given me is useless junk...

*Because I'm flying the Jolly Roger, the internal clock is broken. This isn't a big deal, though. One because Eevee isn't in this game at all, and two because Berries really aren't worth the trouble. Sorry for all you farm enthusiasts out there!*

Good! Everything's put away neatly! They finished moving everything in downstairs, too. POKEMON movers are so convienent! Oh, you should make sure that everything's there on your desk.

Mom, the only thing on my desk is the notebook you got me in elementary school, which is mostly empty because you haven't bought me pencils to go with it since then. I know you're frugal, but would it kill you to... Don't just walk away!

Look! It's PETALBURG GYM! Maybe DAD will be on!

*Suffice to say, he is not on. Mom is depressed about it, but then kicks us out so we can meet the neighbors and she can spend some alone time. Man, pokemon protagonist mothers are assholes.*

08-04-2008, 10:53 PM

*This is Littleroot. It is very little. Three buildings, in fact. Which is the size of Pallet Town, though I think Oak's lab was bigger than Birch's. Mostly because Oak probably deserved that doctorate more than Birch does.*

Oh, you're Maple, our next door neighbor! Hi! We have a son about the same age as you. Our son was excited about making a new friend. Our son is upstairs, I think.

Wow, way to keep tabs on your son Ma'am. What if he's out using Weedles to get high? Did you ever think of that? Huh? Did you!? But fine, I'll go wait in your son's room. Alone. Unattended.

Huh, this place is exactly the same as my room, only blue. And with a Poke ball in the center. Must be a suburb... of two houses. Well, since he doesn't seem to be here, I guess I can hang out and kill some time. Mental note, since he has the same exact set up as I do, I should see if he'd like to play Four Swords Adventure sometime.

! So much for my Big Boss rating....

Who are you? Oh, you're Maple, aren't you? Moved in next door, right? I didn't know that you're a girl. Dad, PROF. BIRCH, said that our new next door neighbor is a GYM LEADER's kid, so I'd assumed you'd be a guy. My name's BRENDAN. So, hi, neighbor! Huh? Hey, Maple, don't you have a Pokemon? Do you want me to go catch you one? Aw, darn, I forgot... I'm supposed to go help my dad to catch some wild POKEMON. Some other time, okay?

Wait, so you barge on in, surprise me, say you thought I was a guy, offer to catch me a pokemon because I'm a girl, and then completely ignore me when you "remember you have other things to do"? What is with this place! Forget it, I'm out of here. You're the worst boy ever.

There are scary POKEMON outside! I can hear their cries! I want to see what's going on, but I don't have any POKEMON... Can you go see what's happening for me?

Well, it's not like anything else I've done today has been successful. I guess I may as well go get mauled by a Poochyena (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Poochyena_(Pok%C3%A9mon)) today as well.

In my bag! There's a POKE BALL!

Holy crap! A hobo! In trouble! Hold on a second sir, I'll help you out!

I... Don't know which any of these are. What kind of monsters does he have stuffed in these balls.... Forget it, I'll just grab one and go!

*I'd like you all to welcome LEEKCELOT, official mascot of TACAETW!LPPE!. Spoink can be semi-official.*

Alright, time to kick some.... Zigzagoon... Ass. You were afraid... of a Zigzagoon? Dude, I beat it in two moves. What gives?

Next time, on Pokemon Emerald! More exposition! More fights! Find out what the rival picked! And maybe we'll start catching things! (Don't count on it though!) !!!

Welcome to the Liner Notes, where I outline stuff I didn't really cover or feel I should cover here!

First off, each chapter will include some free music, because I'm just that nice. Unless people don't like me sharing songs for various legal reasons, at which point I'll stop and no one will ever be the wiser. I just thought it'd be a nice touch.

Secondly, the make up of this LP will be under constant change until I find a format that I'm comfortable with. Don't like my attempts at first person narrative? That's cool, I'm not sure how well I pulled it off myself. That's why I stuck in the *authorial sections*, where I could break from voice and say what I wanted to. Maybe the narrative will go, maybe the notes will go. I'd like some feedback on it, anyway. Even if it amounts to "You fail at life, go away."

Third (Why isn't this a bulleted list), say hello to Sir Leekcelot the Farfetch'd. He's not going anywhere. As far as I'm concerned, the starter should always be a mainstay for a main game team, and should never be traded out. So we'll only have five spaces to work with. But oh, those spaces will be filled.

I was really hoping for Farfetch'd for a few reasons. One, I love the things like I love my family. It's a delicious concept that's never really taken off. I blame the fact that no one at Nintendo cares about them. Seriously, how many Farfetch'd have you seen anywhere else? But Pikachu is still hella popular? How does that work out?

Two, it's not uber. Or over used. Or hell, not really worth it at all. Fourth gen finally gave it's moveset a much needed revamp, but before that, it really isn't much to write home about. It learns a somewhat good variety, and the primary stats aren't bad, but it's not really a powerhouse on any level. It's not bad, but it's not good either. So it gets ignored a lot. Hopefully, though, exposing all of you to it throughout the game will force you to love it, even if the last half will probably see it spend most of it's time inside it's ball.

Finally, I really like smaller update sizes, but even this took entirely too long to do, and I'm still not pleased with how it all turned out. Expect some changes to come within the next few chapters.

I like how the game displays the name and short flavor text of any three Pokemon at the starter selection screen. I mean, sure, you're using a hack, but it's almost like they accounted for customization here.

Holy crap! A hobo!

To be fair, Birch does look a bit more at home on the streets (routes?) than in an advanced Pokemon research facility. He could just be a beach bum who just happened on a shiny white lab coat one day.

This thread inspired me to finish my initial Diamond playthrough and beat the Pokemon League! Now I'm considering going back to Hoenn in my Emerald save for a few rare Pokemon I couldn't get otherwise. Does migrating Pokemon through Pal Park count as a trade for evolutionary purposes? That is, will my Kadabra evolve if I transfer it to Diamond?

08-05-2008, 02:05 PM
You do know the "Real Time Clock" option in the emulator will fix your time problem, right?

08-09-2008, 12:34 PM
Last time, on Pokemon Emerald:

We moved into Littleroot town!

We destroyed our stealth rating and met a friend!

And then we met another, awesome friend, and saved a hobo from a 2nd level Raccoon!

And now, the continuation of our plot...

Phew, you saved me!
Hi, you're Maple! This is not the place to chat, so come by my Pokemon lab later, okay?

What, labs? I didn't know they let hobos have labs. Unless.... No way, there's no way you could be one of those professors Dad was always talking about. I mean, you were being menaced by a Zigzagoon! It wasn't even frothing! It just wanted a hug. What kind of...

AH! How'd I get here!

I've heard so much about you from your father. I've heard you don't have your own Pokemon yet.

What is it with you people and getting my own Pokemon? Is it like some right of passage, like walking across the street on your own or watching an R-rated movie? I never knew I was missing so much.

But the way you battled earlier, you pulled it off with aplomb! I guess you have your father's blood in your veins after all!

Thanks, I just let the crazy bird you let me use peck it to death. It wasn't that big of a deal.

Ah yes. As thanks for rescuing me, I'd like you have the POKEMON you used earlier.

*It's not pictured, but the name is now Leekcelot. Thanks _L_!*

If you work at POKEMON and gain experience, I think you'll make an extremely good trainer.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I never really wanted to be a trainer. Dad's always gone, and whenever he comes home, he's all messy and loud and stuff. It's not that great of a life, truth be told. I was always interested in research though, now that I think about it. Maybe if I could...

My kid, BRENDAN, is also studying POKEMON while helping me out.

Really!? That's pretty convienent. And good for him, I guess.

*And here's the requisite "No/But thou must!" choice.*

And then you go and kick me out of your lab. Don't know why I have to go meet your son anyway.... He just has a stupid hat... And he completely ignored me.... Oh, wait, what? That was fast. It was like I completely forgot to look up and didn't run into any encounters whatsoever. Maybe this visiting thing will go pretty well! But hey, it's a new town!

...One with one more building than before hand. I hate living in the sticks. Whatever, let's find this Brendan kid.

08-09-2008, 12:36 PM
*We head north, to route 103. Unlike in 101, we manage to get into a few battles with Wingulls (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Wingull_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29), a Water/Flying type, and accrue enough experience to level up to six. It's not like we need the level to beat Brendan, but every little bit counts. Speaking of Brendan, I seem to have forgotten to grab his opening speech. Well, he says he's glad to see us and is surprised that we have a POKEMON, so the only option they have is to fight.*

*So we do, and Leekcelot takes the win pretty easily.*

Well, it really wasn't me, Sir Leekcelot is really brave and stuff, so he was able to beat up your thing. At least it was cute though, right?

Look, your POKEMON already likes you, even though you just got it. Maple, I believe you could befriend any POKEMON with ease. We should head back to the LAB.

Yeah, sure, so... Hey! Don't just run off without me! Wait up!

Maple, you should hustle back too.

B-but... You... You ran off without me... Don't be such a jerk! Dammit, stop when I'm talking to you! Don't make me sic Leekcelot on you!

*A short dash later!*
BRENDAN's been helping me with my research for a long time. BRENDAN has an extensive history as a TRAINER already. Here Maple, I ordered this for my research, but I think you should have this POKEDEX.

Get equipped with POKEDEX!

The POKEDEX is a high tech tool that automatically makes a record of any POKEMON you meet or catch. My kid, BRENDAN, goes everywhere with it. Whenever my kid catches a rare POKEMON and records its data in the POKEDEX, why, BRENDAN looks for me while I'm out doing fieldwork, and shows me.

Well, maybe, but how far out has he gone? I mean, you're not going to catch anything rare here.... And he's only like, 15. Did you toss him into a mountain when he was 8 and let him catch his way out!? You're a horrible father!

Well then, here. I'll give you these.

Poke balls get!

You know, it's more fun to have a bunch of POKEMON. I'm going to explore all over the place to find different POKEMON. If I find any cool POKEMON, you bet I'll try and get them with POKE BALLS.

Hmmm... So using the tools you two have given me, I can get started.... And I mean, looking at you, it's not like the requirements are exactly strenuous...

OK! Sir Leekcelot! From here onward, lend me your sword! I'm going to become the best POKEMON Researcher this side of Kanto! And I'm going to need your help to do it! I just wish I knew how to go about becoming a Researcher.... Oh, I know! Maybe Dad'll know! Ok, off to Petalburg City!

Yeah, he really came off badly. But at least he gave me some cool stuff. Unlike you.

Oh! What an adorable POKEMON! You got it from PROF.BIRCH. How nice! You're your father's child, all right. You look good together with POKEMON! Here, honey! If you're going out on an adventure, wear these RUNNING SHOES. They'll put a zip in your step!

Lame pun aside... Thanks mom. I'm really surprised. You're really non chalant about me going off to capture wild monsters, but these shoes are nice. I'm sure they'll be one of the most useful tools I have. I never expected this! Right, so, off! To adventure!

NEXT TIME! Wild POKEMON! Trainer battles! Another rival!? Stay tuned!

08-09-2008, 12:45 PM
Yay! Snazzy new shoes GET!

I like Maple's Story ^_^

They really should make a game where you're a researcher instead of a trainer. Or a really cute version of Trauma Center where you play as a Nurse Joy.

That is, will my Kadabra evolve if I transfer it to Diamond?

I'm not sure if it's the game that does it, or the hack, but it's a nice touch anyway. I wish more of the games would allow for certain customization like this, anyway.

As far as Pal Park goes, I'm fairly certain that doesn't count as a trade, so your Kadabra would still be a Kadabra. But then, I could be wrong!

You do know the "Real Time Clock" option in the emulator will fix your time problem, right?

Well, I didn't, but I do now. So for the record, the current time will be set for EST. Not that it makes a difference, because RSE does not have a day/night cycle, and Eevee isn't attainable anyway, so there's no need for an Umbreon/Espeon method of evolution.

So now that we've fought a few battles with him, let's take a closer look at Sir Leekcelot.

The sprig of green onions it holds is its weapon. It is used much like a metal sword. Lives where reedy plants grow. They are rarely seen, so it's thought their numbers are decreasing. Always carries the stalk of an unidentified plant. The stalk is said to be used for making a nest or as a weapon. If anyone tries to disturb where the essential plant sticks grow, it uses its own stick to thwart them. If it eats the plant stick it carries as emergency rations, it runs off in search of a new stick. In order to prevent their extinction, more people have made an effort to breed these Pokémon. It is always seen with a stick from a plant. Apparently, there are good sticks and bad sticks. This Pokémon occasionally fights with others over choice sticks. It always walks about with a plant stalk clamped in its beak. The stalk is used for building its nest. The plant stalk it holds is its weapon. The stalk is used like a sword to cut all sorts of things. It can't live without the stalk it holds. That's why it defends the stalk from attackers with its life.
Yet another surprisngly depressing Pokemon. Can't live without it's stalk indeed.

Anyway, Leekcelot, as far as Farfetch'd go, isn't terribly bad. His ability, Keen Eye, prevents the loss of accuracy, which is great. It renders annoying moves like Smokescreen useless, which is fantastically useful in certain gyms. The other abililty Farfetch'd can have, Inner Focus, is also useful, because Flinching is really annoying. However, flinching doesn't happen terribly often in my experience, and more people shoot for accuracy lowering techniques.

Where Leekcelot really misses out on, though, is his nature. Natures were introduced in the third generation, and they influence two stats. One is raised by ten percent, while another is lowered by ten percent. Quiet nature increases Special Attack, while lowering speed. That lack of speed could hurt later on, whereas the SP ATK increase can only really help him with one move. One move that is fantastically useless for the main game. The only way Leekcelot could be worse is if he had a nature that decreased attack in favor of something like Special Attack.

However, even if we Min/Max the rest of the team, we're still stuck with this Farfetch'd, as problematic as it is. So again, say hello to Leekcelot!

For the next update, I'm going to need nicknames. Specifically, nicknames for:

Lotad (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Lotad_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)
Poochyena (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Poochyena_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)
Ralts (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ralts_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)
Seedot (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Seedot_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)
Wurmple (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Wurmple_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)
Zigzagoon (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Zigzagoon_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)
Wingull (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Wingull_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)

And while we're at it, choose which two of those to leave out for the time being. After all, we can only carry five and Leekcelot at a time.

08-09-2008, 01:37 PM
Lotad = Pancho

That is all.

08-09-2008, 01:44 PM
Lotad (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Lotad_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)

Oh my god

I don't care what you leave out, you're using this one, no question. Oh man, those evolutions.

08-09-2008, 01:55 PM
Lawl yes I cant wait for that third evolution.

We should call him Amigo, Ese, or Sombrero.

Seedot can be Nuts. That third form is freaky.

big-ass Farfetch'd Pokedex entry

Damn. Does the game actually list all that flavor text?

08-09-2008, 02:23 PM
Well, it's from all the different Pokedex entries combined, so it's accumlated knowledge. But it all exists somewhere in the Pokemon series.

You can leave behind Zigzagoon and Wingull, because I don't like Zigzagoon or Wingull.

08-09-2008, 05:24 PM
I like that you're putting what is probably every game's Pokédex entry up, but if you're going to do it again, could you please separate them line by line or otherwise demarcate them? It's kind of messy as-is.

08-09-2008, 08:01 PM
Wurmple (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Wurmple_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)

Now this is a tricky one. It evolves in two directions arbitrarily! That said, my only idea at the moment is "Tatl" (♀) or "Tael" (♂).

08-09-2008, 08:06 PM
Now this is a tricky one. It evolves in two directions arbitrarily! That said, my only idea at the moment is "Tatl" (♀) or "Tael" (♂).

Ooh, better yet he should catch a second one and name them both Tatl and Tael. Bonus points if they evolve into different branches!

08-12-2008, 08:04 PM
Good news everyone!

The first two wurmples I caught were on different evolutionary paths. This has honestly never happened to me before. I am, however, sorry to say that I cannot in good conscience go with the majority this one time. Tatl/Tael are too good of names to be wasted on the requisite starter bug duo. Apologies!

This does mean, though, that I'm mostly through with the grinding, and so I should finish playing this update tomorrowish. Or whenever I finally find those damn rarities that aren't supposed to be rare.

(Oh, and did anyone like the music in the first update? Is that something I should continue? Or just drop like so many bricks?)

08-12-2008, 08:24 PM

...Oh! You mean you want to save them for... Volbeat and Illumise?

...Oh god dammit, why did gen 3 have to introduce so many pairs that work together so well. No, I didn't, but now I'm going to have reconsider my considerations.

08-13-2008, 08:01 AM
...Oh! You mean you want to save them for... Volbeat and Illumise?

No no, Plusle and Minun, the pointless Pichu ripoffs!

Oh, and as far as the team goes, I vote for Wingull and naming it "Sea Rat."

08-13-2008, 08:21 AM
Oh, and as far as the team goes, I vote for Wingull and naming it "Sea Rat."

I named my Pearl-caught Wingull "Jonathan" after "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" :)

Then he evolved into a Pelipper.

Maple's Research log, date... whatever day it is. Let's just start over and say one.

The first thing I did after leaving Birch's was head directly north of Olddale again. Sir Leekcelot is excellent, but he's also at the point where most of the desirables are KO'd in one hit by him. Perhaps I should teach him to hold back a bit. Or at least be less brave.

Route 102 proved a useful area. The first thing I saw upon arriving there was a lone Poochyena. It smelled vaugely of smoke, and it seemed fearful. More important than that, though, was that it survived Leekcelot's opening attack. That was as much of a sign as I needed. The next moment, I whipped out one of the Poke balls BRENDAN gave me (Note to self: Don't tell him I used them) and captured the poor dog... thing. The only nickname I could think of though, was Lone Wolf. The Poochyena seemed to like it, and I had my second companion. The problem with Lone Wolf, though, was that he seemed to know only two things: How to attack, and how to run away. A few battles taught it how to howl, but that's hardly a skill I'll ever use in the lab.

Lone Wolf proved useful in the next two members of my team, both of the same species. The two Wurmples were pretty boring, actually. I mean, ew, bugs. Gross. But I guess that's what I have to put up with if I want to be a most excellent PROFESSOR. Anyway, I thought Blaster and Team17 (The two worms, keep up) were identical, but after a few battles, they evolved. The POKEDEX is telling me that bugs naturally evolve quickly, so that's not that big of a deal. But these evolved into entirely different species. While they're really just slightly different colors right now, the POKEDEX is registering them differently. So maybe differently colored POKEMON are entirely different species? Must remember to check into that.

Oh, and somewhere in there, I picked up a Zigzagoon like the one that was attacking BIRCH. Only I kicked it and then threw the Poke Ball at it. To prove I could. Suck on that, Birch!

...It was about this time that I realized I was going to talk to my dad, see if he had any hints on being a researcher full time. Or even an internship or two. Oops. Luckily, I hadn't called ahead. He probably wouldn't have liked it if I had called AND been late. Unfortunately, my path was impeded by a bunch of trainers on the way. "Oh, I saw you, so we have to fight!" "Oh, you're my next step up!" "Oh, look at my bugs, aren't they awesome!" How annoying. And bugs are never awesome. I did pick up a Lotad though, which was kind of cute. It has a lilypad for a hat and waddles on four legs. It's probably pretty good at photosynthesis.

At least I got to Dad's gym. And then this happened. Luckily, I managed to get my photo and recorder function working on the POKEDEX in time for this. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't had proof.

I'm surprised you managed to get here by yourself.

Yeah dad, because raccoons and dogs are so dangerous. Why you gotta be like that?

Oh, I see. You're with your POKEMON. Hm... Then I guees you're going to become a TRAINER like me, Maple.

No dad, I'm going to be a Professor! PRO-FESS-OR!

That's great news! I'll be looking forward to it!

You didn't hear a word I said, did you.

I'm going to stay with my relatives in VERDANTURF TOWN. I thought I would be lonely by myself, so I wanted to take a POKEMON along. But I've never caught a POKEMON before, so I don't know how...

It's pretty easy kid, all you gotta do is-

Maple, you heard that, right? Go with WALLY and make sure he safely catches a POKEMON. WALLY, here, I'll loan you my POKEMON.

*WALLY receives: Zigzagoon!*

...And then the kid grabs my arm and drags me outside! What the fuck! If my old man wants to lend him a POKEMON, why the hell shouldn't the kid be able to do it himself!? Dad's a highly ranked trainer among the circuit. I think.

don't they?

Well, yeah, they do. But it's not like you're ever going to find anything as awesome as my Lee-

*Seriously. I'll make note of this later, but I spent a half hour looking for one while training, and he gets it on his first encounter. I call bullshit.*

Uhhh... No, no it's not! New rule, every POKEMON you catch with someone else, you have to share! Like a kid in a divorce! Hey, get back here... Please?

Maple, thank you for coming along with me. You two are why I was able to catch my POKEMON. I promise I'll take really good care of it. Oh! My mom's waiting for me, so I have to go. Good bye, Maple!

And there goes my Ralts....

Maple, if you want to become a strong TRAINER, here's my advice. Head for RUSTBORO CITY beyond this town. There, you should challenge the gym leader, ROXANNE. After her, go to the other POKEMON GYMS and defeat their LEADERS. Collect BADGES from them, understood?

I dunno dad, that seems like a really barbaric way to do these things. Can't I just go to school or something? Like that college thing everyone always used to talk about?

Of course, I'm a GYM LEADER, so we'll battle one day. But that's only after you become stronger.

Fine Dad, don't listen to me. God, I'll figure out how to become a Professor on my own. See you later then.

...So I left. And the first thing I did? Went back and caught a Ralts. I don't think I'll ever use it, but I can least hold it over that WALLY kid's head. I don't think I'll ever see him again.

But whatever, included is an image of my current team, and I also have my Ralts and a... Sea gull thing in the box. Whatever, they can rot.

NEXT TIME, on Pokemon Emerald! The first dungeon! More bugs! And... gasp... PLOT!? Stay tuned!

Also, liner notes to follow, since the Olympics are on and I'd rather watch those than write up about this misadventure. Long story short, Visual Boy Advance takes screenshots. But, when you exit out and go to take more at a later date? It overwrites the older ones. So sorry about the text heaviness.

Also, liner notes to follow, since the Olympics are on and I'd rather watch those than write up about this misadventure. Long story short, Visual Boy Advance takes screenshots. But, when you exit out and go to take more at a later date? It overwrites the older ones. So sorry about the text heaviness.

Oh really? I did not know that.

Incidentally, evolve Ralts as quickly as possible and then lord Gardevoir over Wally's head. Teach that little jerk what's what!

Visual Boy Advance takes screenshots. But, when you exit out and go to take more at a later date? It overwrites the older ones.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that to you before you started. I found the same thing out the first day of my Pokemon Shiny Gold Let's Play; its odd that you can't change that with a setting or something.

08-15-2008, 10:21 AM
See that? 3:20. Most of that time was spent looking for a Seedot, and a Ralts. I found the Ralts. I did not the Seedot. This is galling, since in a run I didn't save, a Seedot was the very first thing that popped out. Arrrrgh.

Ralts is Abra. Only, a less effective, but easier to catch Abra. As such, it's generally a mainstay in my Gen 3 teams. This particular one is Modest, so it's Special Attack is increased while it's Attack is decreased. Suffice to say, this is the ideal nature for a Special user.

It's a shame Ralts only truly becomes an awesome Pokemon in 4th Gen, because it means we don't have access to Gallade (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Gallade_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29).

Poochyena is another of my mainstays from Gen 3, and I usually take one all the way to the Elite 4, like Ralts. Unfortunately, it's really not that good without the Physical/Special split introduced in Gen 4.

See, before Diamond/Pearl, which stat an attack used was based entirely on what element it was, rather than if it actually used a body part or a beam. So whereas Ghost moves use Attack, Dark type moves used Special Attack.

Poochyena excels in Attack, and their lowest stat? Special attack. So it's considerably less useful than future dark types will be. Ours is Hasty, which increases speed at the cost of defense. I'm not sure how I feel about this nature. Speed is almost always a good thing to have more of, but defense is arguably more important.

To put it succintly, Sassafrazz is only good for Pick-up, which has given us all sorts of free stuff. A few potions, an escape rope, and Great balls, to be exact. He will never be used in battle unless you people demand it, so I'm not even going to bother much with him.

Pancho is going to be fantastic. His move set is almost entirely special based, his second highest stat is Special Attack, and his Modest nature will only make him better.

Ah, Sea Rat. I along with Poochyena and Ralts, Wingulls are another of my Gen 3 standards. That's right, we're only about an hour in and I've already got two thirds of my total party. Insane, isn't it?

Anyway, blah blah blah, Wingull's a great HM slave, blah blah blah, Relaxed increases Defense but lowers Speed, blah blah blah. It's rather pointless this time though, since Lotad can learn Surf, and Leekcelot can learn Fly. On the other hand, if you people want me to use him, I will. Same with anything else.

POKEMON that are coming up!

Hopefully next time there'll be fewer technical screw ups.

Nickname your Marill Pikablu, after the infamous rumour back in the 1st Gen's hayday.

08-15-2008, 10:34 AM
I personally prefer Gardevoir to Gallade, but since they're both fragile and lacking in speed, you're better off elsewhere. Might I suggest Gallade's big brother Medicham?

08-15-2008, 10:49 AM

Possibly! I've never used Medicham, though it's stats are nothing spectacular. And I am favoring using Pokemon I've never used before....

Now, if only it would look slightly less Frieza-ish.

08-15-2008, 01:24 PM
Its stats aren't anything special, but remember: its ability doubles its effective Attack. This is better in fourth-gen when there are physical Psychic moves and Ice Punch, but perhaps there's a decent moveset out there for Emerald-level Medicham.

Use Sassafraz. Not because he's good at fighting, but I think he gets better pick ups at higher levels. Eventually he can even pick up TM 26 (Or whatever the Earthquake TM is). Granted, he'd be pretty old by that point...

Last time, on Pokemon Emerald!

Go west, young traveler!

And now, the continuation...

Let's see. If I'm right, they should have a website here.... YES! Success. Oh, and it seems they teamed up with... Interesting. So I've gotta go there? Damn, Dad was right. Guess I'm off to Rustboro.

*Along the way, we caught a Seedot, one of the Pokemon I wanted to use for a bit. It wasn't a dude though, so it got named Notta.*

Later, in Petalburg...

Let me guess, from the way you're dressed, you're a POKEMON TRAINER? Er, well, maybe not. Your clothes aren't all that dirty-

HEY! I'll have you know, I think hygiene is the most important 'gene' in the body!

Um... Right. Anyway, I'm roaming the land in search of talented TRAINERS. Sorry to have taken your time.

DON'T RUN AWAY! MY JOKE WAS FUNNY! Why do people run from me.... You won't run from me, right Sir Leekcelot?

Ahahaha, you're right, that is 'far fetched'! ...Hey, wait up!

*Really a side note, but look at the gratuitous use of special effects in this area. The entire last conversation is done in a tile where you can see your reflection in the water, and the next trainer is this kid running around constantly, leaving footprints behind. I'd bet money that this was really done to show off some of the less important graphical upgrades from Gen2 to Gen3. Even though Emerald came later.*

{Researcher's log, Day... 2ish.}
So it seems that Pokemon vary wildly, almost arbitrarily. Whereas the last route netted me such rarities as a Seedot and a Ralts, this new one seems content to give me a blue rat (Named Marill according to the Pokedex. Mental note, name the Pokedex.) It's cute, but nothing like anything I found in the previous route. And it spits. That's considerably less cute.

Also, I seem to have found a bird. It reminds of the type that used to live back where we moved from, only less... I dunno, fat. And owllike. Of particular note was that I found it holding two halves of a coconut. Leekcelot seems to have taken a liking to clapping them together as we walk, and some sound is considerably better than no sound, I guess. And that seems to keep the bugs away (Thank god).

Speaking of bugs, it seems that they seem to have a short life span. Not long ago, they changed into those sticky blobs that I couldn't tell apart for the life of me. But shortly thereafter, they then blossomed! One into a terrifying thing that starred in Dragonite vs Dustox, and the other looks way too much like a mosquito. They creep me out like none other. But since I don't have to study them anymore, they are so getting shoved in that floppy drive. All so I can train that cute little seed and the water rat.

Notta fights by getting hurt. I can see this taking a long time, training wise.

Inside of the forest, there are a few things I don't like. Dirt, and bugs. Dirt can be washed off. But Leekcelot has slaughtered so many bugs. I love him, a lot, but I'm going to have to get him a good shower when this is all done. I also managed to catch two more Pokemon. One was just kind of laying around, and it didn't do anything other than slack off when I attacked, and the other.... is a dumpy mushroom thing. Luckily, SOMEONE'S PC has remote access for all trainers, so I didn't have to go back to Petalburg again.

I never want to go through this forest a second time. Ever.
{End log}

08-24-2008, 04:02 PM
Hello, have you seen any SHROOMISH around here? I really love them.

Well, yeah, I just caught one over there. But what do you mean by you really lo-

forever, didn't you? Well, I got sick of waiting, so here I am! You! DEVON RESEARCHER! Hand over those papers!

Protect me!

Wait, why are you hiding behind the teenage girl! Hey! What do you think I can do?!

No one who crosses TEAM AQUA gets any mercy, not even a kid!

This is all a misunderstanding!

*One very short battle later...*
But whatever! TEAM AQUA's also after something else in RUSTBORO! I guess we can just let this one slide...

I don't know how I can repay you for saving these papers...

Well, you did say you were a researcher, right?

Well, I guess he did say that....

Do you think you could put a good word in for me? I'm looking to become a POKEMON PROFESSOR.

! Are you now? In that case, stop by DEVON HEADQUARTERS as soon as you get to RUSTBORO. I'll see what I can do.

Yes! Finally, a lead! Thank you so much!

Think nothing of it. Now, I have to get back before the boss thinks I've gotten lost again.

*This is mainly here because I really love double battles. Like, really, really love them. I wish I had a Pokemon game devoted entirely to double battles. In fact, if there were a way for triple battles, or quadruple battles, I would probably never take that game out of my Game Boy Future+ With Holographic support.*

FINALLY! I never thought I would get out of that forest. It feels like it took at least a week. I really need to clean up... But first!

This is the place. Time to see if that flake did what he said he would....

You're... Maple, right? I was told to expect you.

Next time, on POKEMON EMERALD: Information on becoming a PROFESSOR? The first gym battle? More TEAM AQUA shenanigans!?

First off, apologies for those reading, but the end of summer crunch hit work and completely sapped my want to write. Or play video games. Or really do anything other than sleep or read Discworld novels. Luckily, my summer job ends in two days, so I should be able to get at least one more update up before I head back to school. And at school, I'll have more time for fun and games than I do now.

New additions!
Pikablue is not bad! Because we need a water user, mostly. As a species, they specialize in Special attack, which is fine, because Water falls under the Special domain. This particular one is interesting, in that it has one of the few natures that doesn't do anything to any stat, and it's ability apparently increases normal attack. All in all, not bad!

And a potential avenue for "Why so serious" jokes. Win win for me.

Notta (Apologies to SlimJimm, I forgot you had suggested a name way back when! I take this as a lesson that I should write these things down before I go ahead and play) and it's further evolutions grow fairly well, actually. It's a pretty evenly balanced Pokemon, slightly exceling in Attack. This isn't so hot for the metagame, but since we're not going the metagame, that doesn't matter so much. This particular one is of the Bold variety, which increases defense at the sake of attack, which isn't terrible. I mean, we'll probably be loading Grass moves onto Notta regardless, and Grass counts as special. All in all, not bad, not bad.

Here's the team...

And here's the box! You can select any of these for a line up!

Choose (Or not) well, because I'm going up against the first gym in the next update! They use rocks, for those curious. Leekcelot will prove awesome, I'm sure.

Unfortunately, there are no new Pokemon coming up next update. So unless you want to get an early start on something like Whismur (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Whismur), you've all got a short break.

And as always, comments, concerns, and criticisms are always welcome.

I'm just trying to give back to the community that has given me so much!

The question isn't "Am I trying", the question is "Am I succeeding?"

The reaction is pretty much the same regardless of the answer though.

Last time, on Pokemon Emerald

You're... Maple, right? I was told to expect you.

And now, we continue the story already in progress...

Ah, yeah. I'm Maple. I was told to stop by...

...by Bob, yeah. He's the RESEARCHER you met. Says you "saved him from a pirate". Really though, you just helped him find the papers he dropped while looking for mushrooms, didn't you?

Ah, no, there really was-

No, no, it's ok, you don't need to cover for him. He's a decent enough RESEARCHER, but he's always ducking away into the woods to look for mushrooms. He'll leave for lunch, and then come back hours later caked in mud and missing whatever paper he was holding onto. One day, he left with a copy of a Slakoth comic. You know, the one where he hates Mondays. Anyway, he came back hours later bloodied and bruised, and you know what he said? He said he had been beaten up by pirates for that comic! The nerve of some people.

Well, that was fascinating, really, but are you the person he told me to see about becoming a-

A Pokemon Professor, yes. You're... the... second person here to ask about that program. Congratulations. Now, there are-

Wait wait wait. Second? Program? What's going on?

Well, if you must know, the POKEMON PROFESSORhood is a program developed between DEVON CORP, SILPH CO, and PROFFESSOR OAK. It was established for three major reasons: To further the research of POKEMON, to give beginning trainers a better chance in the world, and to create a group of people to test out experimental technologies on without bringing in lab rats or temp agencies.

Well, aside from the last one, this sounds great. Why haven't more people heard of it?

It is a lifetime position. One where most people just poke a POKEMON until it does something interesting and then just slack off for a few years. It's like being the Pope of the Church of Arceus, it's entirely too easy. So the only people who find about PROFFESSORhood are the most inquisitive, the ones who would work for such a goal for years under normal circumstances.

So... How do I go about becoming a PROFFESSOR?

There are three methods. The easiest would be to take our 10 year studying program, where you become an Aide to one of the PROFESSORS that currently exist, where you'll do research and busy work for said PROFESSOR. It's a great way to gain experience and make a name for yourself! If interested, we've got a few spots open in Johto under the new guy...

Ah, no thanks. I don't have time for that. Or particularly want to move to Johto.

That's probably for the best then. ELM, the new PROFESSOR there, is kind of creepy. Plus, we managed to give him a very, very dangerous water POKEMON. That thing is vicious. It killed my furret. I tell you, those things are expensive.

I'm uh, I'm sorry for your loss. But what are the other methods?

Oh, yes. Well, the second method is slightly more work, but it'll go by much faster. All you'll have to do is fight and beat the 8 gyms and the Elite Four, and then give a certain password to the CHAMPION. He'll know what to do then.

That sounds suspiciously like the method to becoming the CHAMPION yourself.

It's like that to prove that you're competent enough to know your stuff about POKEMON. You'll probably be good enough by then to be a decent PROFESSOR. Plus, we love secret codes.

Oh. Well.... Can't argue that, I suppose. That seems like a good idea. Or one of the best ideas, anyway.

The third option is even easier. All you have to do is bring us the previous PROFESSOR's lab coat, in any condition. No questions asked.

It's... It's that easy?

Yep. PROFFESSOR lab coats have special machiens sewn in, so we'll know if the coat is legit or not. It's a fairly simple plan, and it's worked out well so far. BIRCH became a PROFFESSOR, you know. He brought in FIR's coat, though the large red stain in it was a pain to get out. We just ended up incinerating the coat and giving him a new one.

Hm? You have a question?

Uh... No... I... I think I'm going to get started on that. Second method. Yeah. Thank you for your time.

Of course, have a nice day. And good luck, candidate!

There's just no way. I mean, does that mean... BIRCH murdered FIR? No, no, that's ridiculous...

Crap! Almost forgot this was a POKEMON gym. Ok Lone Wolf, let's go!

A LIVING ROCK!? Lone Wolf, you can't beat this thing! Come back, I'll send Notta ou-

Oh. Good work, Lone Wolf.

Alright, a double battle! C'mon, two on one, let's go! Notta and Pikablue, I know this is a challenge, but...

These things are weak to your spit attacks. Never mind, maybe this gym thing is easier than I thought it was. I'm disappointed, actually. Oh well. Sir Leekcelot, let's go! Surely your blade can slash through our enemies! Onto the leader!

At least Notta doesn't let me down.

So, I lost. It seems I have much more to learn. I understand. The POKEMON LEAGUE's rules state that TRAINERS are to be given this if they defeat a GYM LEADER. Please accept the official POKEMON LEAGUE STONE BADGE.

The STONE BADGE heightens attack and lets you use CUT outside of battle. Here, I'll also give you-

Fricken' sweet, my first badge! OK EVERYONE, on to the next city!

...You could at least let me give you my TM. Jerk.

08-28-2008, 04:59 PM

Don't take my GOODS!

Oh no, here we go again!

Help me! I was robbed by TEAM AQUA! I have to get the DEVON GOODS back! If I don't... I'm going to be in serious trouble.

Ugh, fine. But only because I'm in a good mood. I'll be back with your goods in a minute. Fricken mystery GOODS.... Lousy security....

Huh? Wait, what're you? ...No way, that's impossible!

08-28-2008, 05:14 PM
It's that time again. Twice in one week, how lucky are you people? (Not very!)

Anyway, yeah. Not much happened this week. The gym was surprisingly easy, even taking into account the Water and Grass type POKEMON on the team. For those curious, Lone Wolf won by turning that first fight into a Megaten fight. That is, tossing on buff after buff and debuff after debuff until his attack was high enough that he could hurt the Geodude, and the Geodude's accuracy was low enough that he never managed to hit our dog. It works surprisngly well, at least in the first half or so of the game. Eventually, though, it all becomes about the type. I'll try and fight more battles that strange way though, just to see how far we can drag it along.

Now, this is a Let's Play. Not a Watch Me Play and Read My POKEMON Fanfic. So let's get a bit more participation in, and liven things up.

Remember the beginning, when you voted on a starter Pokemon? Well, that went fairly well. I was impressed with everyone, and not just because you all gave me a Farfetch'd. There was a good deal of strange options that would have ended up incredibly fun to play with, and it makes me lament that you can't catch every Pokemon in one game.

So I got to thinking, why not have the same thing at arbitrary points in the game? Spice things up with Pokemon people haven't seen much of, or want to see more of, or whatever. And frankly, I think that's a good idea. So here it is, the first of the random wild Pokemon choices! Here are the guidelines. Every time this choice comes up, I'll give three Types. Your choice has to fall under one of those three to count. Each vote will be tallied up by me and assigned points. The point system is as follows:

1 Point for a POKEMON attainable in Emerald
2 points for one unattainable in Emerald
+1 point for including a nickname
+1 point for something extra

Anything extra can be anywhere from fan art, to extra pieces of writing, what not. Basically it's to get participation. And I would love to see haikus of why Cubones are awesome and depressing.

So, to start things off, we'll go with.... Fire, Electric, or Ground type POKEMON. Voting will close once I return to school (Which should be Saturday nightish.)

And here's the POKEMON I may run into via non-hacking means:

Nincada (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Nincada_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)
Whismur (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Whismur_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)

Abra (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Abra_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29)

EDIT: Almost forgot, no legendaries.

But, I suppose you were merely unwilling to cast pearls before swine.

That being said, I propose you instead cast pearls before Swinub.

The Big Bad MIGHTYENA said, "Little SWINUB, little SWINUB, won't you let me come in?"
And the wee little SWINUB said "Not by the hairs of my chinny-chin-chin!"
Then the Big Bad MIGHTYENA said "Then I'll huff and I'll puff and I'll ROAR your house in!"
SWINUB was blown away!

I do too. :(

Seriously though, this year at school has kicked my ass like none before. Enterprise group leadership, reading and writing intensive classes, Persona 4, Vagrant Story.... Really, a busy year.

Luckily, I also happen to have a long weekend coming up, and an itch to write about the misadventures of some Pokemon trainer. So who knows, perhaps there will be an update sooner rather than later.

God yes. The game itself is just... just so weird. Not to mention the mind-fuck of an ending, culminating in [Foxy being driven insane by Misty's Ludicolo trying to use Dream Eater]. I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I got to that part.

Woo! And we got the schematics for an item, a process that we have to repeat to get new items. Surely this won't be an incredibly tedious way to collect all the stuff in the game, since this is not a monster capturing romp! The developers wouldn't be that dense, would they?

*Yes, yes they would.*

Man, this wasteland is terrible. Everything looks the same, robots are trying to kill me, and chemical plants are just around the corner. Still, you never know what's going to be there. Maybe a robot gym! (Why would I think that? That has nothing to do with anything I've seen. What's going on?)

No.... Where am I!? Why is this happening! Wait... I remember. I remember something. I remember entering....

Yes, yes, that must be it. It was definitely it. That house has to be the cause of this.

It has to. Please

Next Time, on Pokemon Emerald: ???

You magnificent bastard. Well done, well done indeed.

04-01-2009, 01:20 PM
I'm terribly confused.

I know it's a mashup I even realize that seems to be a pokemon like game for the GBC that has robots instead of monsters... But I can't think of which one it is. In fact the only robot game RPG I know is that one for the SNES where you have to build your character... What was it called... reminds me of Enix's evolution RPG, or maybe I'm just terribly confused...

The game you're thinking of is Robotrek, a game that, despite featuring robots rather prominently, I have never forced myself to put more than ten minutes into.

The game I used, however, is a game that I so desperately want to like. That is Metal Walker (http://gamequestdirect.com/013388240074.html?utm_medium=CSE&utm_term=013388240074&utm_content=Metal%20Walker%20GBC&utm_campaign=CAPCOM&utm_source=Google%20Product%20Search&mr:trackingCode=3F64F0CD-6219-DE11-B4E3-0019B9C043EB&mr:referralID=NA), a game so obscure it doesn't even have a Wiki page.

In it, you have these Walkers, the default one is shown above. Rather than plain old RPG battles, your Walker bounces around on the battlefield with the others. It's basically combat pool, only rather than knock stuff into pockets, you hit them in the face with your bot. Items are dropped into the arena from your sack at random, giving you opportunities to pick stuff up and attack, heal, or use debuffs/analyze. It's actually a pretty cool system!

...For the first ten minutes. Then I tend to get bored and shelve the game again. But I keep trying, and this is one of the few reasons I keep my SP around. One of these days, I'll see the end of the game.

One of these days.

That was the name of it. I don't think I've ever spent more than 10 minutes playing it either. The evolution game though I sunk way too much time into that game than I should have...

The combat pool idea sounds interesting... Who made the game?

Oh and when do we go back to Pokemon Emerald? :P

My friend, we never left Pokemon Emerald. For truly, Pokemon Emerald is a place deep inside of each and everyone's he-

Oh, updating? I dunno, classes and Enterprise this semester have destroyed me. I want at least one more update by the end of the semester though. After all, I have to tie in this monstrosity of an update. (Hint: It's possible!)

Hahaha, oh man, that payoff at the end was great. Well done, Rai.

I leave the LP alone for months and I come back to find people are talking about the horrid sequel to the abysmal game of Pokemon Quartz. I swear, it's almost enough to get me back on a regular schedule.

04-06-2009, 04:56 PM
Oh, well in that case if that's what it takes for me to get my Emerald fix, then so be it. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uL150WoxdHk&feature=channel_page)

Come on, the main character sprites in those games look like they're wearing pajamas. Boring grey pajamas.

Last time on Pokemon Emerald: Where are we?

And now for something completely different.

From the notes of Detective Teak Rootstock
re: Missing Person’s Investigation #XXXXXXXXX3435
Subject: Maple [Last Name Withheld]

About 7 months ago, a trainer went missing.

This in itself isn’t terribly weird. After all, hundreds set out each year for this Elite Four challenge thing. Something like half of them peter out and go home within the first few months. After that, about half of the remaining group are lost. It’s ridiculous. Why the hell do we allow such a dangerous thing to continue? When I was a kid, before the force…

Right, right, keep the editorials down, official reports are only for the facts and observations on the case.

Anyway, the subject this time was slightly different. We were approached by the Professor Program about a missing candidate. Something about her being important. I didn’t feel like I could spend my time searching after every lost kid in the world, and I let them know in some choice words. I changed my mind after Sarge threatened to take my badge, gun, and Scyther. It seemed like a much greater deal after that.

Seems like Maple’s got quite the pedigree. Mother was a renowned breeder back in… Hm, can’t read my own hand writing. Bothersome. Anyway, seems she was a breeder back wherever they used to live, and her dad’s a gym leader. No wonder people wanted this kid found.

It was pretty easy tracing her back to her last known area, actually. Apparently, she had taken a job from some shady character. Something about getting some GOODS back. Mental note, look into Devon in the future. Possibly some connection with either Team Aqua or Magma.

Along the way, she apparently caught something that doesn’t exactly appear naturally here. (See attached image)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/NuZGundam/Pkmn%20Emerald/144.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/NuZGundam/Pkmn%20Emerald/145.png

A Cubone, of all things. After a short chat with Professor Birch, it seems that not only is Cubone completely foreign to Hoenn, but it’s not the first weird one Maple’s caught. He mentioned something about a Farfetch’d in the same breath.

I laughed. Who the hell would go out into the wild with a Farfetch’d of all things? That’s ridiculous.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/NuZGundam/Pkmn%20Emerald/146.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v231/NuZGundam/Pkmn%20Emerald/147.png

Anyway, according to one Captain Briney, Maple followed the thug with the Goods into Whismur cave. If I didn’t know any better, I’d have written the girl off then and there. I’ve lost good friends, experienced spelunkers to the dangers of Whismur Cave. The damned things scream so very, very loud. More than a few cave-ins have caught unwary travelers.

They’re pretty fucking ugly. And I hear they only get uglier. Before heading into that place, I always wondered if there was ever anyone I truly pitied. After coming out of there, I can honestly say that anyone stupid or deaf enough to use one for more than a few minutes are definitely worthy of some kind of pity.

Anyway, Briney apparently managed to see the tail end of the battle. Turns out it was Team Aqua who had “stolen” the goods. Perhaps all is not right in our neck of the woods. I hadn’t been aware that Aqua had come out this far, but if they were here, Magma couldn’t be too far away.

Anyway, Briney offered to take Maple overseas, towards the next Gym on the circuit. That’s Brawly’s gym, one that has a history of being rather difficult for up and comers. Well, not the trainers. By all accounts, they’re simple to beat. The trick is navigating around his dungeon, which is pitch black.

The man himself is no push over either. He’s as hard as his gym is dark, and he doesn’t like to give up answers very easily. When confronted about this Maple girl, he got rather defen-

Man, two posts in as many weeks, who would have thought it would ever happen in here again.

I kid, I kid. As the year is winding down, I should be able to dedicate more time to my various pre-school commitments, first and foremost being this one. Not only because there are other games I want to Let's Play, but also because I really feel bad for flaking out and not getting done in a timely manner. I was going to start this off with a list of each of the LP's that have not only started, but were completed in the time it's taken me to get to chapter... something or other. But the point is, it's been a fair amount.

This itself is a filler chapter, using material I've had sitting around for nearly as long as this has been on hiatus. No joke. It's rather rushed because I want to get to the more awesome parts that are coming up. And there's story in there for those who want to suffer through my literary allusions and down right ripping off of better authors.

Anyway, there isn't much to report. I still forgot to pick up a Nincada, so I'll have to go back for that sometime, but the vote came out in Cubone's favor, which is awesome because Cubone/Marowak are easily in my top ten favortie Pokemon of all time.

I think at this point I've completely given up on having a decent team for the post game content. Honestly, what fun is that? Pokemon's all about winning with your favorites and developing strategies around whatever the hell you want. Case in point, Cubone. His attack stats are quite literally nothing special, but he's got a really good defense. In other words, he can't hit very hard, but he'll be staying around for a few rounds.

Our particular Cubone is Rash, which raises Special Attack and lowers Special Defense. This is actually a pretty terrible combination for a Cubone in pre-IVth gen. Since Ground is a physical based type, it draws purely from Attack for its strength, whereas its weaknesses exclusively require Special Defense for any modicum of defense. In other words, this is one bad combination for a Pokemon. But hey, work with what you got.

Anyway, I'm just going to say that this weekly thing isn't exactly a thing just yet, especially since I think I've worked through all the material I currently have, but you never know.

I bet some of you thought this would never be updated again in the first place.

Also, the next Choose A Pokemon contest will be coming up! I'm thinking of something a little more special oriented. Stay tuned!

04-08-2009, 09:12 PM
I like it!

Damn it, Jim! I'm a fighter, not a special attacker.

I'm really, really happy this LP is reviving itself - this was one of my favourite LPs and seeing it come back is great. Good on ya, Rai.

Oh man Lupin, haha. What kind of trouble have you gotten yourself into this time, you loveable scamp. It's almost as if-

Oh shit! It's Tuesday night and I haven't prepared my Emerald update. At least I've got time. Let's do that now!

The first thing we do is open the folder that contains the emulation folder. I know a lot of people don't like having too many folders, but I really do enjoy having a clean desktop and clean folder spaces, even if it means clicking more. It's definitely useful for the organizational skills I don't have.

One more....

But first, a quick check. Seems the battery save has been properly brought over....

...as has the saved state. Brilliant. Time to fire this up.

And it works. Fantastic! Now, Last time, on Pokemon Emeral

Ok, then, nevermind, I guess the battery save went bad? Whatever, hopefully it's fine on the Windows side. At least the save state should still work, and it'll get me closer to where I left off anywa-

Oh no. Oh no oh no oh no. Wait, maybe it's the emulator. I should try it out with something else I have....

Well, nevermind then, seems it's working fine.*

That just leaves me with only one thing to do....

Oh Goemon, always cuttiing worthless things. We love you for it.

*NOTE: Rai in no way supports emulation, even to find and play games that are exceedingly rare. He owns a copy of Yggdra Union, and highly supports that everyone pick up games they wish to play to support the developers.

04-14-2009, 09:28 PM

What the hell Rai?

What? I think it's a perfectly acceptable update regarding Ma-

You never mention her! Or Leekcelot! Or Bones! Or the world! This just looks like a-

Series of screenshots used in lieu of a boring text only update explaining that not only are technical problems keeping the update at bay, but that school and work decided to dump on me for the next week and a half?

Well, yeah. That's exactly it.

Good. That's what I wanted.

Then why?

God, can't I just post screenshots of Lupin III for everyone to enjoy without having to be asked a million theoretical questions? Fine, fine, here's the thing. I don't want this to fall like it did earlier, I'd love to complete it. And to do that, I've decided that I can't really afford to miss an update. If I do that, I'm liable to never try again for another 7 months, and that just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. And because of the amount of work that I've been doing, well, playing games hasn't really been feasible. And I haven't really wanted to sit in front of my laptop and play games, which may or may not explain the amount of work I've gotten done in Dynasty Warriors: Gundam recently. (I love playing as the Gundam Mk II, by the by. But I really hope the sequel adds in the Sazabi and Nu.)

Ok, so you just wanted an update?

Not quite. I'm also introducing the next contest an update or two early. Y'know, to bring on the excitement. So here it is!

The Amazing Starter Brawl

The rules are similar to last time! The differences are vast though. In the beginning, I skipped over the initial starter line up, because starting with Fire/Grass/Water is boring as hell and I could. At this point in the game, we're getting to the first stage of evolution of the starter, and I really do want at least one of them in the game.

So here's you're chance people! Pick from one of the nine initial starters and vote. Anything extra you include will add bonus points to your choice. Feel like writing an essay about why Cyndaquil is actually the superior fire type? Not only do I really want to read it, but that would probably earn you extra points. Everyone knows Torchic is the secret best fire starter anyway. Want to draw fanart of Sir Leekcelot beating down a Bulbasaur because he has a stupid face? Go right ahead!

The point of the matter is, choose a starter. Give me something extra. I'll assign points and tally up what gets chosen according to my grading rubric, and then everyone will know and the third member of my final line up will be chosen. So get cracking!

Awesome, what else do we need to know?

Well, if you're not aware of the iconic starters, then here they are grouped by type:

Bulbasaur (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Bulbasaur_(Pok%C3%A9mon))
Chikorita (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Chikorita_(Pok%C3%A9mon))
Treecko (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Treecko_(Pok%C3%A9mon))

Squirtle (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Squirtle_(Pok%C3%A9mon))
Totodile (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Totodile_(Pok%C3%A9mon))
Mudkip (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Mudkip_(Pok%C3%A9mon))

Charmander (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Charmander_(Pok%C3%A9mon))
Cyndaquil (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Cyndaquil_(Pok%C3%A9mon))
Torchic (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Torchic_(Pok%C3%A9mon))

Wow, that's a lot of information.

I know, that's why I'm giving extra time. I guess this did turn into another text heavy update. Sorry.

's cool dude. Anything else?

You can probably expect the next normal update within the next month due to my schedule being packed, but I'll try tossing in a smaller bite sized update in the nearer future.

Also, blackjack.

That's it. Any questions?

04-14-2009, 10:13 PM

04-15-2009, 07:58 AM
I approve heartily of any update that contains Lupin, so you're doing ok in my book.

Also, I'm afraid I don't have time for clever essays, but:

+1 for Mudkip
+1 for Cyndaquil
+1 for Chikorita
-1 for Totodile
-1 for Bulbasaur

I think that covers my bases.

04-15-2009, 08:05 AM
I'd definitely toss my vote in with Cyndaquil. The little dude starts out as a hedgehog and eventually ends up as a ferret with its ass on fire.

04-15-2009, 01:06 PM
Also, blackjack.

That's it. Any questions?

No hookers?

I've already got my choice for Bones into the party, so mostly I'm wondering if I should participate or not. Hmm...

Octopus Prime
04-15-2009, 01:16 PM
I'm going to throw my hat into the Squirtle wagon. This is partly because of his sweet-ass shades, and mostly because when he grows up he develops enormous water-cannons in his shell.

And any organic creature that can naturally grow mechanical appendages, let alone heavy ordinance, as it matures is inherantly the best kind of organism.

04-15-2009, 01:41 PM
All votes are welcome all the time! I'm like the 7/11 of voting. Without slurpees. I am not as awesome as 7/11 then.

Also, don't forget about nicknames. Those count for extra.

04-16-2009, 07:36 AM
I would go with Totodile. It has its nickname (Toto) built right into its name. Also, alligators and crocodiles are awesome....far more awesome than any turtle (sunglasses or no).

If not Totodile, I would go with TheSL in support of Cyndaquil. It ends up being cute and extremely deadly at the same time.

Gold/Silver really did have the best starting line-up of all the Pokemon games.

04-16-2009, 07:48 AM
Man, I just really hate the Totodile evolution designs.

Anyway, to make my votes count more, here's some possible names:

Mudkip: Like-Liek
Cyndaquil: Fuzzfire
Chikorita: Herb

(No, I'm not terribly proud of them, but names is names.)

Octopus Prime
04-16-2009, 10:11 AM
If nicknames count for extra then I maintain that the Squirtle should be named after the greatest* biomechanical-sunglasses clad individual to ever live;

The T-800 Endoskeleton.

I'll leave it to you to shorten that.

*Well, first to come to mind at least

04-16-2009, 10:55 PM
Welcome to a special session of They Are Comfy And Easy To Wear! I’m your host, Rai, and tonight, I’ve got a treat for you viewers. With the contest that’s currently under way (Place your votes now in the Great Starter Brouhaha ©!), and considering Talking Time’s predilection for the deeper side of things, I decided that now would be a good time to discuss battling, the greatest part of Pokemon.

What, you didn’t think I was in it for the plot, did you? Why the hell do you think I’m making my own stuff up as I go? Honestly, this stuff is pretty terrible. Especially Team Aqua/Magma. Whatever happened to Giovanni and Team Rocket, huh? Whatever happened to genuinely dangerous thugs who happen to be equipped with rock eating monsters? I swear, kids these days. You and your walkmen and game boxes. When I was your age….

Anyway, we begin tonight’s session with Leekcelot, our knight in down feathers. Truth be told, Farfetch’d are actually incredibly pathetic. Their base stats total to a paltry 352, a relatively low number. For reference, the lowest total I could find was 180, while the highest on Pokemon that will be normally used in competitions is a smooth 680. On that scale, Farfetch’d places pretty low.

On the other hand, it’s Attack stat is the primary focus, so maybe the moveset possibilities are good! Well, not especially. Leekcelot gets STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) on Normal and Flying moves, neither of which is especially good. After all, the strongest Flying move that Farfetch’d can learn is Fly (Flying, 70), and he will, but Fly is really a terrible move. Sure, he’s invincible for one turn, but if your opponent sees it coming, they can switch to something with an ice move and decimate the bird on landing. The only other worthwhile attack moves are drawn from the Steel movepool, which have never really appealed to me much as a trainer. They’d be better if their accuracy wasn’t so incredibly low a lot of the time.

Luckily, Sir Leekcelot isn’t completely screwed. First off, he can learn Sword Dance (Normal), a move that ups the users’ attack level greatly. Combine this with Slash (Normal, 70), a high power Normal attack with a “High” chance to Crit and STAB and you have a fairly strong Normal attacker. When he finally gets a hold of a Farfetch’ds signature item (Stick), Leekcelot will be hitting more crits as well. With any luck, he’ll turn into the Pyro of our team: Good for close range and crits, but with miserable staying power. For a fourth move, Leekcelot may pick up Agility (Normal) to up its Speed, or Reflect (Psychic) for defense against those pesky Ice moves.

Bones is…. Special. Unlike Leekcelot, Bones will get a lot more powerful when it evolves, earning itself a respectable 80 Base Attack bonus and an even higher defense. In all actuality, the attack for a proper Cubone/Marowak is higher as well, because the species has a hold item that doubles their Attack (Bone). I intend to grab one in the future. The Speed is miserable, but ideally Bones is our point girl. The Heavy of the team, to extend the Team Fortress 2 analogy. Before evolution, well…. Bones is death to anything weak to Ground.

The next update was almost entirely possible only because of one of Cubone’s signature moves, Bone Club (Ground, base attack 65). With the STAB, that turns into a move with 98 power. Yeah, the STAB is definitely helpful. Because of that, we’re going to want to stick as many moves on that will benefit from the bonus without making him a one-note machine.

So, the first move that will definitely go onto Bones will be Bonemerang (Ground, 50). While it’s attack power is lower than that of Bone Club, Bonemerang hits the target twice always, doing the same damage. So it’s essentially a 100 power Ground Move, before STAB. That puts it in the power range of the second move, the all important Earthquake (Ground, 100). The rest of Bones’ moveset is up for grabs, and will be dictated by however the rest of the team develops. While I doubt I’ll throw Toxic (Poison) on, someone has to have it, and they have to be able to last at least a round. On the other hand, I could go all out and attack-wise and stick on Brick Break (Fighting, 75) and Strength (Normal, 80) on. Or I could be completely weird and throw Ice Beam (Ice, 95) Bones’ way. Ultimately, our options for her are wide and varied. I’m honestly almost surprised that Cubone/Marowak don’t rate higher competition-wise, looking at their movesets. Depressing.

And now for the members of the team who won’t be making it all the way, unless the audience really wants them to. First up is the one who I will probably keep the longest, if only for it’s sheer versatility. Lotad’s line are all Water/Grass types, which means it can draw moves from both types and still get a STAB. And as a species that specializes in Special Attack, there’s no reason not to.

A quick look at the movesets reveal, however, that the amount of Grass and Water moves the Lotad line can draw from are hilariously limited, sadly. It all off two grass moves and three water moves by leveling, none of which are terribly worth waiting for. Especially as one requires that Lotad, the first evolution, reach level 43. I love you guys, but not that much.

Luckily, the TMs it can learn draw on some fairly powerful movesets. First off, without a dedicated Water user, Lotad can learn Surf (Water, 95), which is the only HM move you really want on a non-slave ‘mon. Rain Dance (Water) can be used with that to add on a 50% Attack bonus, which will make the move even more devastating. And because I enjoy themed Attackers like that, why not toss Sunny Day (Fire) and Solar Beam (Grass, 120) on there? I see no reason not to, and then Pancho can be firing off Solar Beams every round. Win-win. Assuming it stays alive long enough to be able to do that, anyway.

04-16-2009, 10:56 PM

Ew, Marill. I’m not gonna lie, this is probably one of my least favorite Pokemon ever. One that isn’t Shuckle, anyway. It’s also next on the chopping block, because Pancho can do what it can do, and it does so with a sombrero. Show me something that can be done, and I will scientifically prove it can be done better with a sombrero.

Which is to say nothing of the fedora effect, but I digress. Man, it would be awesome if Leekcelot wore a fedora.

The funny thing about Marill is that as a species, it’s highest stat is actually HP, followed by both Defense and Special Attack. Everything else is below average, but it could easily be a tank. I can honestly see how it could be good.

Unfortunately, the moveset to the beast is really limited. Copy paste what I said about Pancho, except remove everything pertaining to grass moves. This thing’s having none of that. If I had to carry this with me all game (Please god no), I’d definitely toss Ice Beam (Ice, 95) and Rest (Psychic) on, the former to grant some form of protection against anything strong against Water, and the latter to regain HP mid battle. This would be followed up either by one of those stupid berries that wakes Pokemon up or a pokeflute. Or something, I dunno. The lesson to be learned here is that Marill and Azumarill suck.

And then there’s Notta Dude, a proud member of the Seedot line. It’s also one monster that is only really here to take up space! Until the evolution into a Nuzleaf, Seedot is a pure Grass type, granting a STAB to Grass moves. This would be problematic, but Seedot’s Special Attack is only slightly worse than it’s Attack. After evolution, it picks up a Dark attribute, which draws more from Attack than Grass does.

Notta is still a fairly tragic case, however. Most Dark type moves are only really useful against other humans, and thus have low attack values in most cases. Grass moves fair better, but again, Special Attack isn’t Notta’s strong suit. Still, not everything is for naught!

For one, I’d probably allow it to level up and gain moves, unlike some other members on the team, who seem to exist for TMs and HMs. Through leveling, Notta will learn Faint Attack (Dark, 60) and Razor Wind (Normal, 80), both fairly strong and decent attacks. On the grass side, rather than the Sunny Day/Solarbeam combo that’s on Pancho, I’ll stick on Giga Drain (Grass, 60), an attack that will help keep it alive while also drawing on a STAB. Admittedly, the reason I’m doing that is entirely arbitrary and Notta would most definitely benefit from Sunny Day/Solarbeam, but fuck it, why not keep it interesting? There are better options than Seedot out there anyway. The fourth move on Seedot could be any number of things, but it may well be Rock Smash (Fighting, 20) just so that I can actually have something with it on.

And finally, Alena, a reminder of a Let’s Play forever lost in the depths of the forum (Note: Not forever lost. Hopefully Red Hedgehog finishes it one of these days). If I haven’t described the Ralts family as a poor man’s Abra, then I should have. And if I have, then I apologize for repeating myself, but here’s the truth:

Ralts are a poor man’s Abra.

Ralts wants to a Special Sweeper (High Sp. Attack/Speed) like its big brother, but it just isn’t strong enough or fast enough. So then it decided to grow a bit more muscle, tragically forgetting that Psychic is a type dedicated entirely to the smart ones, not the strong ones. Late at night, Ralts cries into its pillow, wishing that it could be as cool and popular and smart as that Abra and how one day it will pay, oh yes, it will pay…..

I mean, uh, what?

Anyway, if this were fourth gen, I’d keep a Ralts around solely for Gallade, because Gallade rocks my fucking socks design-wise. Since this isn’t, though, the only reason we’ll be keeping Alena around is to rub Wally’s sickly young nose in how awesome ours is. He will rue the day that he caught a Ralts by random chance, oh yes he will.

Ah, right, move load out. Well, if you can’t tell by my previous movesets, I value an all out offense far more than I do one that’s balanced and can last longer. I’m a huge proponent of the Glass Cannon strategy. That is, if you can’t beat it in the first couple shots, then give up and go home.

People say I’m fun to play against in Starcraft. Because either they find me and shut me down quickly, or they get 7 Carriers up the tail end of their base. I find it fun, because it puts a certain amount of pressure on the game. It’s tense, I like these strategies.

Anyway, my Ralts generally have Psychic (Psychic, 90), Thunderbolt (Electric, 95), Shadow Ball (Ghost, 80), and something else. Maybe Hypnosis (Psychic). A lot of thought does not go into their movesets.

So there you have it, a 2000 word update on what my theoretical pit fighting monsters would/will have to fight with in the future. I know some of these things are a long way off, but I figured something was better than nothing this week, right? Additionally, with all of this laid out and my thought process laid bare, it may help some people to decide on a starter for the Wondersplendous Starter Melee ®. Or it may make your eyes glaze over in tl;dr.

Next time, on TACAETW: An actual plot update? From Maple’s point of view!? Stay tuned!

(Holy god, this turned out longer than some papers I’ve written for classes before. Man, I apologize for how wordy this is. It’s just that there’s a lot to take apart when it comes to the Pokemon these days. Crazy.)

I like meta-game talk, so I don't mind. I think the biggest problem with the team is the amount of redundancy, though. Since you've got so many Pokémon with similar weaknesses (the big ones being ice, grass and electricity), you could probably stand to kick a grass type and water type off of the team just so you don't get pulverized later on. Alena you could probably still use though, since the Psychic type is pretty good and you don't have to bother with annoying trade evolutions to get Gardevoir like you would Alakazam, but Pikablue, Pancho and Notta look like the easiest drops so far.

But first, do you know what this thread really needs?

Poorly-written fanfiction.

Professor Fir was a patient man, there was no doubt about that. Both as a professor and as a naturalist, he has long since been used to the amount of waiting his job entailed, be it studying a new species of Pokémon that proved to be elusive, or guiding a novice trainer on their path to becoming an acomplished trainer. Both as a researcher and a teacher, knowing how to reign in frustration and focus on getting the job done was a very valuable skill to have in the life of a professor.

However, sitting here in the outskirts of Rustboro City with his long hair unkempt and his labcoat covered with dirt, Fir had to admit that he was close reaching the limit to his patience, as his search for a Chikorita to capture has led him across nearly half the Hoenn region. A lesser man would have been driven to distraction, infuriation even, at the sheer persistence of this Leaf Pokémon. No matter how much he tried to lure the Pokémon close enough for study - be it by lure, by distraction, or even by force - it just seemed to know what he was doing and run off.

Still, he was determined to catch the Pokémon at any cost - he had promised Elm, the creepy bastard, that he would help catch him the Pokémon he'll be handing out to new trainers, and so far he's nearly done. He had already caught and sent Totodile and Cyndaquil to the novice professor, so all that's left was the grass-type. But where could it-

At that point, Fir heard a rustling from a nearby patch of long grass. Startled by the sudden interruption, he darted behing a nearby Oak tree and watched the grass, waiting to see what Pokémon would pop out of it. He reached for his Pokébelt, plucking one of the Pokémon he's trained and carried with him. Ol' Habanero, his Charmander, hasn't had a fight in a long while, he mused, and catching this Pokémon might be a nice change of pace.

Clicking on the button of the Pokéball, Fir judged the distance between him and the patch of grass and, taking a deep breath, he tossed the ball into the air. With a flash of light, his old friend escaped the ball and dove headfirst into the grass, tackling whatever was inside and flushing it out.

A few seconds later - and much to Fir's surprise - it was the Chikorita he had found! He had been searching long for the Pokémon, and seeing it pop up after so long was what he was waiting for. The Chikorita, free from the grass, knocked Habanero away with its leaf and into the grass and started to run off. Not one to waste an opportunity, Fir decided that it was the time to strike. "Habanero, fire your ember at it!" he ordered, pointing for good measure.

With a slight nod, the Pokémon turned and lept towards the Chikorita again, this time firing a barrage of fire from his mouth as it leapt over the Leaf Pokémon. His aim was true, as it nailed the small grass-type dead-on, knocking it to the ground with a loud thud. This was it, Fir thought to himself. He pulled an empty Pokéball from his belt again and threw it at the fallen monster, hitting and capturing it within the ball.

Now all he could do was wait. Fir crossed his fingers and watched intently, as the ball began to jostle. Once, twice, then a third time, before the glow of the ball subsided and faded. Fir breathed a sigh of relief as the ball went silent, and called Habanero back to his ball as he strolled over to where the Chikorita was.

"You put up quite the fight, didn't you?" Fir chuckled, picking up and examining the Pokéball closely. "I think I'll name you... Leafia. How's that sound?"

"That depends on what kind of Pokémon you've caught, doesn't it?"

Fir turned around, reaching for the other Pokéballs on his belt by instinct. However, looking the man over, he couldn't shake the sense of familiarity about the man. That beard, those sandles... for some reason, he had felt he'd seen them before.

After a few tense seconds, the two staring each other down all the while, the deja-vu got to him and Fir finally ventured to ask him. "Do I know you?"

At this, the man simply smiled and straightened himself as he began to relax. "Now Fir, isn't that any way to say hello to your old assistant?"

Old assistant? Did he mean-

At that point, everything clicked together and Fir began to laugh at his blunder. "Birch, is that you? How good to see you again!" Fir said, patting his old assistant on the shoulder as he shook his hand. It had been years since he had last seen his old friend, their last meeting just before he had transferred to Pallet Town to study with Oak. Seeing him here was, to say the least, a pleasant surprise.

"So, what brings you here to this neck of the woods?" Birch said, glancing around at the route around them. "I know you've always been a bit of a naturalist, but you've never been one to go around catching Pokémon without a purpose. It's not like you."

"So, what brings you here to this neck of the woods?" Birch said, glancing around at the route around them. "I know you've always been a bit of a naturalist, but you've never been one to go around catching Pokémon without a purpose. It's not like you."

Fir gave Birch an odd look at that comment, but shrugged it off. "If you must know," he said, straightening his coat, "I've been going around picking up Pokémon for the other Professors. It seems there have been some Pokémon migrating across the country, and they wanted me to pick up a few starters to examine before they pass them onto the new trainers."

"I see," Birch said, nodding as Fir made his reply. "Pokémon have been behaving oddly as of late. In fact, a herd of Cubone have been traveling across Johto as-of late, I hear."

"Indeed. At the rate they've been migrating, they'll reach this part of the Hoenn region in one, maybe two years."

"An interesting hypothesis," Fir said, stroking his chin as he went into deep thought. "If there's some sort of ecological shift going on, then it might mean that something big might be about to happen."

As Fir said this, Birch snapped his fingers and a smile lit up on his face. "Exactly! There have been reports of massive seismic and oceanic activity in the Hoenn region the past few years, and I think it might be related to the legends of those three Pokémon."

"I see you've done your research well, Birch. I'm impressed," Fir said. A smile spread across his face as quick as lightning, and he pat the younger assistant on his back as a gesture of pride. "You could make for a terrific professor one day, if you'd just apply."

At that, Birch went silent. The once easy-going man seemed to have grown uncomfortable at that last comment, and turned away from the elder professor. Fir knew something was up immediately - Birch was never one to dwell on matters, at least not to this degree. What could be eating away at the man, he wondered?

"Birch, what's wrong? You seem... quiet," Fir said, stopping his old assistant and turning him to face him. Looking at his face, he saw that Birch was trying to mask his expression, trying to hide something from him. A possibility dawned on Fir as he saw the mournful expression his old friend wore. "You don't mean... you were rejected from the program?"

"No! No, no," Birch shook his head vehemently as he said this, trying to pull away from the elder professor. Fir held his grip - something was wrong and he was going to find out.

"Tell me, Birch," he said, "what's going on? What are you trying to hide from me?"

"...I'm sorry, but I have to do this."

Fir expression turned to one of puzzlement at this, then quickly to shock as a sharp pain shot through his gut. He looked down to see that Birch had stabbed him with a small dagger, and was horrified to see his own blood running down the length of the blade.

"...I need the money for the research," Birch said mournfully, "and becoming a professor the other way would just take too long. Once I take your coat back to Devon Corp, I'll get the funding I need to finish my research as I become a professor. I didn't want for it to turn out this way, but you forced my hand. I'm sorry."

Fir gasped out in pain as Birch pulled the blade from his stomach, falling to the ground as his body gave way. His body spasmed as the pain shot through his body, and felt his vision fading as his body slowly began to shut down. The pain only started to grow worse as Birch started pulling the coat off of his body, kicking him around and tearing the wound further open.

"Don't worry, I'll take good care of your laboratory for you, professor. I'm sorry things had to turn out like this, but it's all for the best. You'll see."

He could barely see Birch as he walked away down the path, his voice echoing at the edge of his consciousness. Fir's body spasmed as he tried to lift himself once more, and collapsed to the ground once more. He knew he didn't have much time left... there was one thing he had left to do before it was too late.

"H-Habanero... Leafia... I'm sorry..."

With the last of his strength, he released his partners from their Pokéballs, plucking them from his belt and cracking them against the ground. His vision started to fade as the sound of Pokéballs opening reached his ears, and, knowing they were safe, he collapsed to the ground once more, never to awake again.

- - -

Several years later...

"C'mon, Leekcelot, the Aqua Grunt went this way."

Maple sighed as she and her partner entered the cavern before them. She didn't like coming here if she could avoid it, she had to admit - with the eerie shade of green and the threat of Whismurs at every corner were too much for her nerves. The last time she came here with her father, five years ago, she had accidentally bumped into one of the little loudmouths and gotten the fright of her life. It was an experience she was reluctant to admit, but the Captain Briny said the guy who stole his stuff ran here, and, loathe she was to admit it, she was a sucker for hard-luck cases.

She and Leekcelot stopped as they corner, Maple taking the time to peer around the corner to see if any Whismur were waiting. There were none, thankfully, but-

There was a flash of green suddenly as something barreled into here. Maple let out a shout as she hit the ground with a thud, a wave of pain rippling through her as she touched the stony floor. Rubbing her back to try and ease the pain, she picked herself up to see what had collided with her.

"Ow... what the heck just hit me? Whoever you are, I'm... gonna..."

Staring back at her wasn't a Whismur, like any of the others littering the cave, nor was it a human, trainer or otherwise. Judging by the leafy stem connected at the head, the small string of buds lining its neck, she was staring at a Pokémon that, by all means, should not be in this region.

It was a Chikorita.

Before she could react, the small Leaf Pokémon darted further down into the tunnel and around another corner. "H-hey wait! Come back!" Maple yelled, taking chase after the small Pokémon down the tunnel. "Leekcelot, let's go after it!"

I'm no writer, and I'm sure the people who are probably cringed at reading this, but hey. I had fun, and it might up the ante with the later challenges too.

So, yeah. My vote: A (female) Chikorita named Leafia, like the game. (http://www.gamespite.net/talkingtime/showthread.php?t=6464) Hop to it, Rai.

That fanfic has a Farfetch'd named Leekcelot in it. This LP has a Farfetch'd named Leekcelot in it. Coincidence?

I agree with PapRe, the redundancy is unnecessary. If you decide to keep most of the Pokemon that you have, I would put Cyndaquil over Totodile as your starting Pokemon.

04-17-2009, 07:52 AM
Holy crap Pap. I was not expecting epic of that magnitude.

Man, now I'm tempted to pull a George Lucas and say that all works written in the universe are canon unless a crappy movie retcons them. Impressive.

As for the team, yeah, I know there's a bit of redundancy, but we haven't seen a lot of different types. It's a part of why I love the early game of Pokemon, you have to struggle to pull together a decent team to survive with. Fairly soon, though, we begin running into different types with different skill sets, which in turn means that we can start switching teams around.

And as always, I leave the team makeup to Talking Time. Want to get rid of Marill faster? Then suggest something else. I don't have time to access the PC boxes until later, but tweaks can be done. Ideally though, I'll have Notta and Pikablue out by the end of the next two updates. Depending on what I've swapped out then, either Pancho or Alena are next.

Well, it wouldn't be such a problem if you hadn't handicapped yourself with a Farfetch'd as your starter...
I understand its to make things interesting, but he's not a good fighter at all.

Just as I will one day make a godly Pikachu, I have faith that Rai can make a not-terrible Farfetch'd. Since I'm not as up on my meta-game as most people around here I don't pay a whole ton of attention to STAB and critical rates, so what he has planned for Leekcelot sounds like it will make him a somewhat competent fighter (at least in the main game).

This thread is beginning to make me pine for a Cubone...

Anyway, just to be contrary and boring... go with a Torchic for that starter. Since my sleep-deprived brain is blocking my ability to write lame poetry, I will instead write a short (and probably badly-written) essay about why:

Torchic is not the 'secret' best starter Pokemon, Torchic is the best starter Pokemon.

Fully evolved, it will not only have an awesome attack known as Blaze Kick with which to kick a Charizard (and various other world-ruining Pokemon) in the face, but it is a scientifically proven fact that it can ruin the shit of fliers in the anime. A Pokemon that can kick other Pokemon in the face that isn't Hitmonlee and who has been scientifically proven to overcome type disadvantages? Yes please.

If you keep Poncho with the Sunny Day/Solarbeam setup, the awesomeness of a fully-evolved Torchic (explained above) will only increase in team battles, as it won't have to waste a turn using Sunny Day (Poncho will be doing that) in order to make itself far more powerful. While this can be said about the other fire starters as well, only a fully-evolved Torchic can kick things in the face and be benefiting from Sunny Day at the same time.

Blaziken can kick things in the face. It can kick things that are flying at high altitudes in the face.

I come to the conclusion that a non-Hitmonlee kicking things in the face (and having Poncho use Sunny Day to set itself up, and coincidentally empowering a fully-evolved Torchic even further) is the pinnacle of awesome in this game.

04-17-2009, 11:04 AM
If a Fire-type starter doesn't win, might I suggest a Houndour? The ol' hellhound is always left out in the cold as a result of Nintendo's bias against GSC Pokemon, and I'd like to see him get some love. Plus, he has the advantage of not being terrible.

04-17-2009, 09:45 PM
I'm going to vote Mudkip! They're pretty cute, plus they evolve into Swampert, which is pretty much my favorite pokemon. (Let's just forget about the awkward teenage years of Marshstomp.) Electric can't touch Swampert! It laughs at it! This delights me every time! Plus, Swampert is pretty big so Maple could ride it around as a boat or have it move big equipment in the future lab. (See Figure 1.) Mr. Bungle has more practical reasons for why Swampert is awesome. (http://toastyfrog.com/talkingtime/showpost.php?p=446725&postcount=108)

If Mudkip wins the election, I think it should be named "Muddy Mudkipper". Or "The Captain". Uh, shoot. I don't think those will fit. Just call him "A Boat" then. (I do like Kirin's Mudkip name though.)

Edit: Figure 1. A stupid little pencil drawing I made real quick today. But I think my point is made! The text is hard to read, but that's ok as it is unimportant!

We could probably do to bring Lone Wolf back again. Dark types are pretty cool, y'know? And even though he doesn't really have much to offer attack-wise, he could probably shore up the team's weaknesses for the time being until you find something better (e.g. Houndour) and help you out with any pesky Psychic-types.

Aside from that, you could probably do to pick up a few more 'Mons if the selection right now isn't very good. I'd suggest Surskit, but according to Bulbapedia he isn't in Emerald, which is a shame because Bug/Water is a pretty neat typing. Maybe you could pick up a Nincada or Skitty around where you are instead to make up for it?

Just make sure you don't use any Whismurs though. They suck.

Hey folks, the update is being put off for a few days! The semester ends Friday!

I have four papers due sometime in these next few days! I have to finish up and prep the Enterprise for my leaving! And I've also got a few interviews in which I have to show off my portfolio of work, despite the fact that I'm nowhere near as much in love with it as I was at this time last semester.

So uh, yeah. This might be updated Thursday or Friday, but Saturday will be the latest. This one's looking to be long too.

Also, don't forget about the Fantastic Beginner Struggle ™. I'll be closing it this Sunday. Please look forward to it.

Yes, yes…. It has to be…. That house. But how did I….

Man, forget this gym. It’s dark, the leader is hard, and I think it kind of smells too. I am so out of here. Let’s see…. I believe I had to deliver a letter? Yeah, in the cave that’s on this island, yeah. What’s the worst that could happen?

Oh, brilliant. It’s dark here too. Well, whatever, I’ll just have to-

OH GOD CREEPY ROCK wait, is that a Geodude? Wow, I’ve only heard legends of them. I’m ama

OK, now this is crazy! Bones, Leekcelot, we’re going through this place now! If only we had some fire….

I’m interested in rare stones, so I travel here and there. Oh? A LETTER for me? Let me take a look…

FINALLY! You would not believe the amount of bats there are in this cave. I swear, if I have to see another bat again…

Eh? Didn’t you know? Caves are bat country, you’re best off grabbing a repel or two and just running. Stopping for even a second is a sign of weakness, and Zubats just love signs of weakness. Well, thanks for getting this to me. It’s somewhat important.

Now, enjoy the way out! And remember, don’t stop.

Man, whatever. I’ll bet you love bats. Still, I am done here! Time to get out and make get off this dark island. I hope never to return here again.

Yep! I did what I had to, caught a few Pokemon, and eh, I can always come back to the gym. Whatever, let’s be going!

I’m sailing away~. Set an open course

When he asked if I wanted to hear sea shanties, I thought he meant old pirate songs. This is going to be stuck in my head forever now. Augh.

The guy you’re supposed to deliver the DEVON GOODS to is usually found in the museum. And if you ever feel like taking another trip, feel free to ask. Peeko isn’t very good at singing along with the choruses.

Believe me, if I ever see you again, it’ll be too soon. So uh, you take care. I’mma go north, this sand is annoying. And there are way too many people.

Whoo, Slateport! I have some GOODS to deliver! And I’ve heard this is a great place for buying stuff for Pokemon. And there’s a museum! This place is awesome. Right, but first off, the gym!

04-24-2009, 01:25 AM
Those are some fine Pokemon young lass. Here to enter them in the beauty competition?

The… what? Beauty competition? No, I’m looking for the gym. I’m out to become a-

Oh, pish posh. Every young girl we’ve had through these parts recently have only really been interested in visiting the beauty competition. Now, to compete-

No, no. Stop talking. There is no way you can make this better. Just go stuff yourself. I’m going to become a well respected PROFESSOR despite the preconceptions of assholes such as yourself. If I ever see you again it’ll be too soon. I’m never coming back here again!

*I really want to make known my displeasure with how the Pokemon Fan Club chairman was portrayed. He didn’t even give me any free stuff in this generation. Lame.*

*The Name Rater is also here. If you feel anything needs a nick name change, then by all means, tell me to stop. I won’t change everything’s name every update, but once or twice is certainly reasonable.*

Gah, that stupid old man. Beauty contest my ass. Whatever, whatever. There’s a museum, right? Right. Let’s stop by that, learn something, cool my jets or whatever. Yeah.

OH, THIS IS JUST GREAT! THIS IS THE WORST TOWN EVER! Whatever, fuck it, there isn’t even a gym here. The GOODS can’t be too important, so screw it. I’m off to the next town. Bunch of ingrates…

Yeah! I can’t wait to cause havok in town! It’ll be great, don’t you think?

Wait wait wait. A line of people wearing pirate outfits. Havok…. Hey, I ran into someone like you at the horrible cave. He was kind of an asshole. Wait, that means… OH! OH CRAP!

They’re inside and it’s all my fault. I’ve gotta do something now! Otherwise, they’ll-

-pay the entry fees and act like perfectly reasonable museum patrons? Huh, maybe these pirate dudes aren’t all bad.

Nevermind, apparently these exhibits are all about recreating the Godzilla effect. After all, what else could be so nefarious here?

Huh? Oh, you say there’s Cap’n Stern upstairs? Yeah, let’s get rid of these GOODS. I’m sick of these stupid pirates and their stupid schemes. I mean, what the hell are they going to do? Expand the sea? That’s stupid.

Far, farfetch’d.

Exactly Leekcelot, you get my pain.

Thanks for getting this to me so quickly Maple, the higher ups at DEVON will be glad to hear that we can already proceed. I may even be able to fanangle you a spot on the sub. That ought to help with your research, right?

Oh, well, thanks Captain. Actually, I’m leaning more towards the avian member of Pokemon society. I mean, how much do we know about some members of the Flying family? After all, f-

Oh god, not you guys again! That’s it, I’ve had it up to here! Bones, Leekcelot, let’s kick some piratical ass!

Well, at least it’s nice to know you morons have uniforms. It makes the crazy easy to spot. And then wipe out.

Wait, wait…. You aren’t seriously saying…

Oh my god you actually said it. You actually said the words that I didn’t want to hear. Ok buddy, look here-

No! No I do not! And I’ll tell you why! Expanding the sea would not only completely destroy millions of homes and lives, but it would futz with the global temperature, climate, and general stability of the ecosystem. Your love of mermaids would get everything killed. God, this is a stupid plan and you should feel bad!

I’ll bet your favorite movie is Waterworld, isn’t it? ISN’T IT!?

Oh god, it so totally is, isn’t it. I am stunned. I have literally been paralyzed.

Ok assholes, first you’re pirates, now you disappear like ninja. Fuck it, I’ve decided! First, I’ll destroy you guys. Then, I’ll destroy those Magma people because they’ve probably got another stupid idea. Then, THEN I will become a Professor and move away from this retarded island. I WILL BE GONE, DO YOU HEAR ME DAD? DO YOU HEAR ME?

Huh? Thought I heard something? Must have been the wind.

-Back to where we were before!-

Ok team, let’s go. We have dreams to crush and anger to vent. We’re done here. And god help someone if I have to return.

No, no you haven’t. Now piss off, I’m in a bad mood and I’ll be having none of your lip. Insult me earlier rassle frassle….

Wait wait, what are you doing here!? Have you been following me! Did you put a tracker on me! Are you with Team Aqua and or Magma!?

God, wait, no, no you crazy girl! I’m just curious. I haven’t heard from BRENDAN in a while, so I was worried. Man, you need to relax. Y’know, there’s this place a little further down the road I go to when I need to relax. You might want to consider stopping by.

Ah, sorry sir. I’ve been having a bad day. Yeah, I think I may do so. That’s a plan.

Well, this must be the place. But look at it. Such a run down house…. Still, can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Let’s check it out!

04-24-2009, 01:28 AM

Yeah, this is definitely a weird feeling. It’s almost like the place is alive, breathing…. Watching me.

Hey, Leekcelot, stop hitting that table! You don’t know where it’s been!

End Pokedex Playback, Error Message #112312: Out of Tape

Of… Of course. I remember it now. I remember it all. It’s this house, it has to be. It’s alive. It…. It wants to devour me, to drive me insane. Oh god, I don’t know if I can escape. Someone….

That's right people, with the semester now over for me (Thank god), I feel I can dedicate more time to this. While I will have a summer job (Hopefully), I should be able to do work on this. Because I'm having fun dammit, and that's all that matters.

To answer a question, first:

Will we always suffer from Percy now?

Yes. Yes we will. Not necessarily here, but Percy is now the secret best thing to come out of the Let's Play forum.

We're also currently up to date in Maple's Story! After all, there isn't much I can do until the Not-terrible Initial-choices Free-for-all is finished (Contest closes Sunday evening, enter now for your chance to win, prizes paid for by no one because there are none). I'm looking forward to what everyone votes for!

Anyway, this time around, we picked up three pokemon from the cave!

The first is this Aron, a Steel/Ground type that specializes in Defense and Attack. I'm going to take this opportunity and say that while I think the addition of the Dark and Steel types in the second generation is fantastic and went a long way to making the game more balanced (The Dark types doing this much better than the Steel types), I really believe that Nintendo has really dropped the ball with them. For example, Aron could be a great tank. Unfortunately, it requires a boatload of experience to keep decently leveled up, and Steel types have major weaknesses to Fire, Fighting, and Ground type moves. Additionally, the Steel type moves kind of suck. They make me sad.

The next pokemon picked up is actually the one that gave me so much trouble in Brawley's gym, Makuhita. Both it and its evolution are actually pretty good physical tanks, with high Attack and HP totals. I'm not sure what this one's Nature is, but I'm actually considering swapping it out with either Pikablue or Notta.

And finally, a Sableyes a Dark/Ghost Pokemon. I've never used them much, but they have a really creepy design in my opinion. The eyes, man, the eyes. They go on forever. Anyway, they've got decent Attack and Defense stats, which will help them well with their Ghost attacks (Which are apparently physical type attacks?), and not so well with their Dark attacks (Which are Special). They've actually got a fairly decent movepool too, now that I look at them. Huh, maybe I'll have to substitute this one in.

Anyway, that's it for today. Now that the Name Rater is availible, feel free to suggest changes to nicknames (Especially for Sableyes and Aron!). Feel free to suggest any changes to the team as well.

And finally, the starter competition closes Sunday! Don't forget! Sunday!

Man, the anticipation is killing me. You do know you're killing me, right Rai?

Anyway, is the Aron female? If so, name her Samus because it's an awesome name for a cool 'Mon.

I always named Sable "Silver", because I was never able to think of anything better.

Don't follow my example, please, it was a horrible one.

And I am now kicking myself that I didn't think todo that myself.

I am kicking myself hard!

You've caused me to break a bone from self-kicking, sir. I hope you are satisfied.

04-24-2009, 10:50 AM
I really like the design of Makuhita, so I would love to see you keep it in your line-up.

Female Aron = Nora
Male Aron = Aaron

Sableye = Fisheye Fred

04-24-2009, 01:00 PM
Makuhita = SenorBagOfCrap

I don't think that will fit though. Perhaps Sn.BagOfCrap? I don't know how to abbreviate Senor. D:

I also know I'm supposed to put one of those wiggity worm things above the "n". SHUT UP.

Also, since you mentioned that Sableyes is creepy, you must name him Percy. And keep him in your party forever. Because if you don't something bad will happen.

04-24-2009, 02:13 PM
You only have ten characters, but I believe it does permit the use of the character ñ.

It's funny; the name of that character is "eñe" which you can't spell without the character itself, making it impossible to accurately refer to if you don't know what it is!

Aron: Pebble? Rhysteel?

Sableye: Pearls? Untouchable?

04-24-2009, 08:55 PM
Sableye was on my main team in Sapphire. I was trying to see if it would evolve. Of course nothing happened there, but he totally saved my ass in the fight against Norman. After that, I figured he earned a slot in the team and a name to go with it. I called him Starbuck as I couldn't think of anything better and I already had an Ahab in the party.

Is calling the Sableye Stitch too silly? Otherwise, Col. Sparkles.

Man, the anticipation is killing me. You do know you're killing me, right Rai?

Anyway, is the Aron female? If so, name her Samus because it's an awesome name for a cool 'Mon.

You're not allowed to die until after you finish the Zeldas and Persona 3.

Anyway, what's up folks, this is a small update to let everyone know what the team is. Since the foray into the cave, I finally managed to pick up some interesting types. And with that, I've vastly improved my team!

You'll notice a complete lack of Marrill and Seedot. This is because Marrill is stupid and has a stupid face, and Seedot was really being kept on for whatever reason. Luckily, the team hasn't really lost anything, because Pancho (Now evolved!) can do everything they can do, and he can do it better in some cases. So good riddance to dead weight.

In their place, I've substitued in Makuhita and Sableye. E.Honda (the Makuhita) just learned Arm Thrust, which may be the last move he learns. At this point, he's really too slow to do much. It's hard to justify him. On the exact opposite side of the spectrum, Percy has proven an invaluble ally. One who doesn't drop anything. Ha, suck on that, Princess Tomato! His Ghost typing grants him invincibility against Fighting types, which is a huge weakness, especially in the tournament scene. Likewise, his moveset isn't bad at the moment, with a good physical, a good debuff, and Night Shade, which does damage equal to your level. It's a good general use skill to have, especially when you don't want to rely on False Swipe for weakening a catch Pokemon.

So where do these additions leave the team now? Well, previously, we were fairly balanced between Special attackers and Physical attackers. Unfortunately, we also had massive weaknesses to a handful of types and could have easily been swept by a halfway decent special sweeper. Now? While those type weaknesses haven't exactly been fixed completely, we're no longer quite as vulnerable. However, the addition of Sableye and Makuhita has swung our team strongly into Physical territory. Leekcelot and Bones have a lot of that handled, unfortunately, so the team still needs some work. I'd like to see a fire type too, just to have some extra cover. On the other hand, I have Pokemon who can cover what Fire takes care of rather handily. So it's not required, by any means.

Now, this team isn't permanent. For one, we'll soon be picking up a starter. I've chosen which one wins at the moment, seeing as I don't imagine anything else will be chosen. Given the choice on what to switch out, I'd choose either Alena or E.Honda, depending on what won. I don't really want to get rid of Pancho, because his Grass/Water allows him to be really versatile while still being powerful, but hey, this is a democrazy. Feel free to tell me to get rid of him and sub in a Whismur Oh god no please don't.

Right! So contest ends tomorrow. Are you excited Talking Time? Are you?

I mean, I won't be insulted if you aren't....

Duly noted! Though does that mean I can die before I start PokéFR, FFIX and LoD then?

Percy has always freaked me out, the creepy bastard, and making him a Sableye doesn't help his case either. I vote to drop him as soon as you can and keep E. Honda and Alena. They're not as perturbing as Percy and they at least have the decency to evolve further down the line.

Hey Boss, I thought I was your favorite-friend.
Fun Fact: Percy is ten-times creepier if you pretend he has Teddy Ruxpins voice.

Fun Fact: Percy is ten-times creepier if you pretend he has Teddy Ruxpins voice.

Well that's my nightmares for the rest of the week.

I'd drop Percy - Sableyes have awful stats.

I'd recommend keeping Pancho and Alena - they were very useful when I played through Sapphire. Also, pinata pokemon.

04-27-2009, 07:26 AM
I actually kind of like this Percy, and it's nice to see a monster that's not used as much (presumably due to the aforementioned weak stats, but hey, if you can work around 'em, great). Plus he's kind of cool looking.

I also vote for keeping Pancho, though. Can't go wrong with a giant sombrero. I'm ambivalent about E.Honda and Alena.

04-27-2009, 07:57 AM

Hey bosses, I thought you people would love me for once.

Anyway, I've tallied up votes and the Absolute Beginner Competition ©®™ has reached its surprising conclusion. Seriously, I expected more love for Charmander, to be honest.

The results can be found Wednesday, on the (now) regularly scheduled weekly update of They Are Comfy And Easy to Wear! Let's Play Pokemon Emerald! (Why did I choose such a long title. Next thread will be like, three words, tops.)

04-27-2009, 08:19 AM

Hey Boss, I can see your soul

04-27-2009, 05:10 PM
I'll be closing it this Sunday.

Right! So contest ends tomorrow.

The results can be found Wednesday

For the record, I went with Chikorita over Charmander partly because I'm expecting the latter to end up as the starter for FireRed (or at least I'll be pushing for him really hard). Might as well have some variety in starters for these LPs, right?

04-28-2009, 11:02 PM
This is going to get me killed. So I uh, I'm going to be honest, I'm not sure how to get cheat codes to work in the Mac version of Visual Boy Advance. This is really not user friendly at all.

Anyway, this is probably going to delay the update until Wedenesday evening. And if it's not up by then, then I'll post the results or else Papillon will kill me.

04-29-2009, 09:32 AM
Nah, don't worry about it too much. From my experience cheat-wise, VBA for Mac is... significantly less helpful than the Windows version. You have to input the codes in before you load up the ROM (and it doesn't tell you if the code's faulty until you do), and even then it only accepts Codebreaker and GameShark Advance codes instead of the more prevalent ProAction Replay stuff. It's a royal pain in the ass to get it to work, honestly.

But seriously, who won? Tell meeeeeee

04-29-2009, 03:07 PM
Today has been incredibly miserable. It has left a terrible taste in the back of my mouth, and the cheats still don't work properly. Yearghablebleble.

For those curious about which starter won, I'll spoil it here because I don't think I'll be able to post until next week due to various issues of not being around. I'll try and make it a double update next week, though.

Right, so anyway, it was Chikorita, but it was a tie. Thank (or curse) a d12 if this was (was not) your choice.

04-30-2009, 05:04 PM

All the time and effort I put into that wonderfully horrible essay... all for naught. I feel like less of a person. I'm sorry Torchic, I'll do better next time, I promise! (Unless next time involves a Pikachu)

05-11-2009, 08:13 AM
Hey guys, and welcome to this edition of Rai's Personal Life starring Brad Pitt as Rai!

Not really no, but this is a grab bag of good and bad!

The Good: I live in my own apartment now! Fantastic!

The Bad: There is no internet in said apartment, despite being "on campus housing". Boo!

The Ugly: Due to lack of job and love of Atlus, I really can't afford the internet during the summer, when I'm living alone. This means I will not be able to watch Twin Peaks, will not be able to download Lupin the Third movies, and I guess I won't be able to update this quite as frequently.

The Good (Again!): So while I won't be able to find out if Agent Cooper survived his shooting, or if Lupin gets away with stealing things after having some wacky hijinks that culminate in a fairly awesome showdown, or if Maple ever gets out of the Trick Room, I will have loads of time to play through my backlog of games. (Already beaten: Super Metroid. Next on the list: Super Paper Mario.) I'll also have time for that reading thing. And writing.

Namely, updates! But since I don't have constant access to the interwebs, I'm not entirely sure when updates will come. Especially this latest one.

So, I'm going to say this: They are Comfy and Easy to Wear! Let's Play Pokemon Emerald! is on hiatus, except when it's not. Which seems to be the case anyway.

Random thought of the day: A Let's Play of KotOR with the title of That's So Revan would be awesome.

05-11-2009, 08:34 AM
As long as you're planning to coming back at some point to finish this, I'm cool with you taking a break. Enjoy your summer and added gaming time!

06-28-2009, 05:57 PM
Greetings, folks! I have not been taking my hiatus lightly. After all, this thing is nearly 1 year old and at 200 posts. And for the fourth, or slightly before, I have something special.

The update to end all updates. The pure size of this will make Godzilla look small. I may even cut it in half, just so that the pure girth of the update does not daunt a regular viewer quite as much. Be prepared.

And in order to help that preparedness, how about answering a little question?

Jackie Chan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4Psls1ngwM), Bruce Lee (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLO1YIWQuXE), or a top (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkTLN1T17p4)? This is a very important sciencey question, and your response will be tabulated.

06-28-2009, 06:12 PM
Bruce Lee, all the way.

06-28-2009, 06:16 PM
Bruce Lee, all the way.

06-28-2009, 06:27 PM
A top... come on we've all played with tops we can relate to them... None of us have ever played with jackie chan or bruce lee, and we sure as hell can't relate to them...

tops for the win!

06-28-2009, 06:32 PM
Oh! Wait, I think I get the question now. So we're to decide between [Boxing], [Taikwondo], and [Capoeira], huh?

...Yeah, I'm sticking with my vote with Lee. He knows where it's at.

06-28-2009, 06:41 PM
Yeah, I'm having you all make a decision between [Ippo Makunouchi], [Spike Spiegel], and [Mugen].

This is off the cuff, as an apology for taking so long. It will be fun.

06-28-2009, 08:42 PM
I call Top, just because I'm having a hard time figuring out what the hell to with mine.

06-28-2009, 11:14 PM
I call Lee in the pokemon sense.

Otherwise Chan all the way.

It's pleasing to see that the picture's just as terrifying when it's Rai's avatar.

06-29-2009, 01:15 PM
Jackie Chan, man. Totally.

Farfetch’d. Far, far, fetch’d.

Pokemon speak detected. Initiating prototype translation program. Species: Farfetch’d, Cubone, Sableyes.

Master for a long time became helpless. We must produce her from this place.

Yes, I believe that it should we take him outside also. I suppose it'? time s for a solo research.

But if I can carry it. Wouldn' ; t wants its…. falling, now, we?

Then we agree. Before, safely!

*The fun thing about the Trick House is that the Trickmaster redoes the house every so often throughout the game, allowing you to come back and receive various rewards. The most rewarding thing in this LP though? References to House of Leaves.*

End playback

Huh, so that’s how I got out. What happened to your speech though? Sounds like it was run through a bad translator program a few times. Guess it’s still got some bugs to work out. Anyway, my map is saying that the next gym thing is up in Mauville City, which is north of here. Looks like there’s a bike path too, but we have to go through the grass, since we have no bike.

I’m starting to hate walking.

How’s it going?

Oh, no big deal, just losing my mind in a crazy physics-defying house for no apparent reason. I only lost months of my life to the weakness of our own mortal veil in keeping out the harsher, more malevolent forces at work behind our universe.

No big.

Well, good to hear. So, been raising your Pokemon? Allow me to check!

*I’m not gonna lie, this guy gave me a load of trouble. Most of it had to do with his Marshstomp. Stupid friggen Marshstomp…. Good thing we had Pancho there to save the day!*

Hell yeah I am. I’m keeping up with my training. Or rather, the Pokemon haven’t forgotten everything. I mean, look at Pan-

Hell yeah, Pancho! Let’s go!

Here, before you go, take this.

It’ll help you find stuff on the ground you can’t see normally. That’s why it looks like a dowsing rod, see. Right, take care!

Right, he seems to have left me with one usable Pokemon. What a douche. Right, back to town, then onwards!

One quick heal later…

Ok, back, northwards! To Mauville city!

-Oh. OH. I’ve never seen this little thing before. Hey, Honda, we aren’t knocking this one out. Punch it a couple times, but no more, got it?

Brilliant work. Now, let’s see…. Chikorita…. Incredibly rare…. Seldom seen? Huh. Actually, it looks like this one has a previous owner. Seems he’s been out of commission for a while, the only thing left is an initial. P. Huh, weird. Name of Leafia…. Works for me, I guess. Onwards and upwards!

*I love this route because it is full of doubles battles. I love doubles battles. Who doesn’t? Communists, that’s who.*

Eh? What’s this? Leafia, you’re already this far along? Man, P is really missing something. Wonder whatever happened to him. His loss though.

07-01-2009, 08:39 PM

Maybe so, but it isn’t quite so fair when you won’t let people without bikes up there. I swear, it’s like racism. But with bikes.

FINALLY! After months stuck in that place, a long route, and an unexpected discovery, we’ve finally reached this place. And there’s a gym! Awesome! But first, this guy’s got an interesting sign, wonder who he is….

I think I deserve a bit more respect. Like maybe Rock Smash Dude. Woohoo! Anyways, you Pokemon look pretty strong. I like that! Here, take this Hidden Machine!

Rock Smash Guy, I don’t know who you are, but I have a feeling you just gave me the worst thing you could possibly give a person. Just this feeling I have.

*Fuck Rock Smash.*

Right, anyway, woo, new HM. Cut’s been so useful. Whatever. Let’s find that gym. Mauville isn’t very big… Hey, is that…?

But he’s become a bit too peppy… Since you’ve started living with Pokemon, you’ve grown quite a lot stronger. But don’t you think you’re pushing it to suddenly challenge a gym?

No, no, there’s no way. He had some vaguely explained disease. He could possibly be up and about, holding me up from my gym date. Clearly this isn’t the right kid.

If I combine forces with RALTS, we can beat anyone!

OH MY GOD. It is. It is that little son of a-

I’ve gotten a lot stronger since we met. Maple, I want you and my uncle to understand that. Maple, please, will you have a battle with me?

…You want to fight me, an accomplished trainer who’s proven herself against one of the eight leaders of the land, when you probably still have that ridiculous Ralts you stole from me? Y’know what, sure, I could use a warm up before I go on to the big fish. You’re on!

*It really was over that quickly.*

YES! SUCK IT DOWN! I beat down a kid with a potentially lethal disease! Hell yeah!

Maple, thank you. Being a trainer is tough, isn’t it?

Wouldn’t know, I’m a professor in training. What’s your excuse?

It’s not just enough to have Pokemon and make them battle. That isn’t what being a real trainer is all about.

Why, what’s keeping you from becoming stronger and stronger?

Asthma? Pneumonia? Monkey pox?

Maple, it just dawned on me that you must be the trainer who kept an eye out for Wally when he caught his Pokemon. Why don’t you visit Verdanturf sometime? I’m sure Wally would enjoy it.

Yeah, sure, I’ll visit. When I’ve got nothing better to do. Smell ya later!

You’re friend with that boy Wally, aren’t you? But you didn’t hold anything back and beat him impressively. Yeah! That’s what a real Pokemon battle is all about! I idolize trainers like you! I’ll be cheering for you!

Wait, you idolize trainers who beat up on little kids because of petty grudges? Suddenly, I feel worse about myself. Now I want a shower….

Right, let’s see. Yellow floors… Electric fences…. White hair…. Yep, this is an electric gym. It’s shocking, I know, but we must continue on! Hehe, did you hear that Leekcelot? Shocking, like electricity? Get it?

Well, fine, whatever. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean everyone else won’t. People love puns!

And so, I put my time into making door traps in my Gym.

Least. Useful. Hobby. Ever.

Oh? Now, what are you doing here? What’s that? You say you’ve gotten past all my rigged doors? Wahahahaha! Now, that’s amusing! Then I, Wattson, the leader of Mauville Gym, shall electrify you!

*I actually had a lot of trouble with Watson. This stems, in part, from Farfetch’d being a Flying-type. While far from the best Pokemon species ever, Farfetch’d actually can be a fairly solid Normal attacker, especially against enemies weak to Flying moves. Unfortunately, Electric Pokemon are both quicker than Leekcelot and resistant to Flying moves. A tragic combination, if ever there was one. Cubone, on the other hand, gets a workout this match, and the only thing that can ever really bring him down are the exploding ‘mon that Watson have.*

07-01-2009, 08:42 PM
With the Dynamo Badge, Pokemon can use Rock Smash out of battle. And it will make your Pokemon a little bit faster, too. Hmm… You should take this too!

Nope, done, don’t want it. I never want to hear from you again. Creepy old man…

*Alright, Two badges now! This seems like a good place to- BUT WAIT, there’s more!*

Hm, well, while we’re here, we might as well pick up a bike. Of course, considering my money issues, I may be better off just renting a unicycle…

Your running shoes… They’re awfully filthy.

Well excuse me, the trails are dirty. Maybe you should talk to whoever takes care of them.

I can tell you came from far away, no need to be annoying. Hm, hm. You must be Maple, from Littleroot. Birch told me to be expecting you. I expected you months earlier though. Nonetheless, I’m sure you’re here for a bike. Everyone else comes by for one. For you, though, I’ll give you a deal. Free bike!

What, really? No strings?

None. Of course, you can only take one. The Acro bike is good for exploring trails, while the Mach bike has a high top speed. Which would you prefer?

No contest.

I’ll take goes fast over technical anyday.

Good choice. If you need to change, come see me. I’ll allow you switch free of charge. Ah, if you’re going north, there are a couple boulders in the way. Watson had them put there to act as a gate. Keeps the people hasn’t beaten in. Of course, the new trainers are screwed if they try to come from the north…

Thanks for the heads up! And the bike! Maple, AWAY!

Huh, must be the blockade. Well then, Makuhita, break these rocks!

Reminder: Thank Rock Smash Guy. Except for the fact that this weak attack eats up a move slot. Nevermind, prepare plans to burn down his house.

Ow, fuck, ow! Why aren’t there signs that there’s a sandstorm going on in the desert! Right, forget this, we’re out of here!

Hm? Hey, what the hell? Who would wear a hood this close to an active volcano? They’ve gotta be sweltering under those. Wonder what the deal is.

Sounds like it, yeah. But I heard we need a meteorite to do it. Oh, I get it now. That’s why the rest of the crew went to Meteor Falls. And why we can’t let anyone pass until they get back, yeah. Makes perfect sense.

Right. So a bunch of crazies in hoods are going to find a meteorite for some nebulously defined goal of awakening something or other.

Sounds familiar, though I can’t place my finger on where I’ve heard that plan before…

Right, whoever those hooded creeps were really need a good slapping. If they hadn’t been there, I wouldn’t have to be as far north as I am, and I wouldn’t have to walk through these ashy fields. I loathe ash.

And these ridiculous spinning bears! I mean, the ways the dots change are interesting, since there’s no consistent pattern, but god. So annoying.

And ninja! That’s it, I am done with this place. Let’s hurry Leekcelot, if I never set foot in these fields again, it will be too soon.

On the other hand, Alena is now a pretty dancer. Suck on that, Wally!

Far, fa-fa-farfetch’d.

What’s that Leekcelot? Take it easy on the poor blighter? I have no idea what you mean.

Right, there is jack all to do here. Tour guide says there’s supposedly some professor here. Cosmo? Cozmo? Specializes in…. Outer space. It’s like parents decide what their kids are going to do when they grow up. “Oh, you want him to be an astronaut? Better call him Low Orbit!” I can’t wait to get out of Hoenn. Anyway, his house should be… hereish?

Wait. Team Magma. That sounds suspiciously similar to…. No, no, there’s no way. There is no way there are two teams trying for roughly the same goal in this country. Nope, none at all. That’s just stupid. But Route 114, eh? I think I’ve got a rough idea of where that is. One scientific rescue, coming up!

07-01-2009, 08:43 PM

Giant hole in the mountain… Yep, seems like this is it. Sounds like there’s some kind of group close too. Doesn’t look like I’ll be here long. Hooray!

Yep, more of those hooded goons. Must be Team Magma. What do they want with the professor though?

Heh? I don’t know who you are, but if you get in the way of Team Magma, don’t expect any mercy!

You’re badly mistaken if you think you can have your way with the world!

Gasp! Tuxedo Mask? Racer X? Break Man!?

Oh. It’s those dumbasses.

But it’s too much trouble to deal with you all… Heh, it doesn’t matter! We’ve got the meteorite, so off to Mt. Chimney we go! Hehehe! Be seeing you, Team Aqua dingbats!

Y’know, on second thought, I can get behind these guys’ style. Anyone who calls Team Aqua dingbats can’t be too bad.

Ah, so your name is Maple. At the time, I thought you were one of Team Magma’s goons. Humph. You’re one odd kid. Team Magma is a dangerous group of total fanatics.

So they’re like you.

They engage in destruction, claiming to expand the-

So they’re like you.

Buh. But that…. That would forever set the balance of nature completely off. Oceans, water would go away. Crops would shrivel. Fish would die. There is nothing in there that remotely resembles a good idea. Why the hell would they do that?

They are rivals to us, the sea-loving Team Aqua!

Your idea is incredibly stupid as well, you know.

Boss, we should give chase to Team Magma….

There’s no telling what Team Magma will do at Mt. Chimney! Maple, you should keep an eye out for Team Magma, too. Farewell!

I loathe each and every one of you and your organizations. Leekcelot!

We know where they are. Let’s wipe them out!

Seems they’ve all run away. Or they’re at the top of the mountain, waiting for me to wipe them out. Either way, fun!

Hey, everyone, I’m on a cable car! A mo-

So much for hoping they’d be gone. Let’s see, where to…

To say nothing of the people.

Ohhh, he looks like he’s having a good time at it. I think I’ll just go on see what’s over here.

By amplifying its power with this machine, Mt. Chimney’s volcanic activity will instantly intensify…

Wait, instantly? Dude, we’re here. Don’t people institute new world orders so that they can survive and potentially lead said world? This plan just smacks of suicide mission.

Its energy will grow deep inside the crater and… Fufufu…

Right, someone’s gone off the deep end.

I’d heard Archie bemoaning a child who’s been meddling in Team Aqua’s affairs. It must be you he meant. Humph! So you’re thinking of interfering with us, Team Magma? Now you listen. Long ago, living things used the land to live and grow. That is why land is all important! It is the cradle of all! That is why Team Magma is dedicated to the expansion of the land mass.

I hate you all and wish you to die. Enough talk, have at you!

*Gasp! Will Maple work off her rage on the idiotic team leader? Will the volcano erupt, killing everyone on top? Will we pick up a Spoink? Tune in to the next post for the further adventures!*

Yeah! Fear my tiny, bone wielding crying monster! Now, you have to leave the mountain alone, right? I think that’s how it goes.

But don’t think that this is the last you’ve seen of Team Magma.

With your help, we thwarted Team Magma’s destructive plan! But… You… Whose side are you on?

None but my own. I’m true neutral.

Ah, it doesn’t matter. We will remain vigilant and keep up our pursuit of Team Magma. Maple, we shall meet again!

Man, it’ll be too soon when that happens. And while I’m at it, I’m grabbing this meteorite. Don’t want that Team Magma coming back for it. Right, anyway, time for the path back down.

Oh. My. God. Look at that thing, with the eyes and the pearl and the tail. I don’t know what it is, but something, somewhere, is telling me I must have it and use. I must. For great usage!

Yesssss. Alena, you’re out of here.

Well, this is a tiny podunk. Let’s find the gym and get out of here. The sooner I’m a Professor, the sooner I’m out of here.

God… so steamy. It’d be nice if there weren’t so many trainers here.

*Right, this gym’s schtick is a series of teleports. It’s exactly like Sabrina’s gym, except that some of the teleports hide trainers. No one here is very difficult, and they all fall to my line up of Pokemon. It’s almost sad.*

I have been entrusted with the… No, wait. Dare not underestimate me, though I have been leader only a short time! With skills inherited from my grandfather, I shall, uh… demonstrate the hot moves we have honed on this land!

This gym leader seems more unstable than element 115, but whatever. We only need her badge!

I… I’ve only recently become a Gym Leader. I tried too hard to be someone I’m not. I have to do things my natural way. If I don’t, my Pokemon will be confused. Thanks for teaching me that. For that, you deserve this. Here’s the heat badge.

Right, thanks, take care, bye.

Hmm… That’s a decent collection of badges. All right, then. You may as well have this.

Get equipped with Go Goggles!

Keep those with you if you’re planning on going into that desert near Route 111. There should be some Pokemon that exclusively desert-dwellers. You might look around for those. As for me… I’m considering challenging Norman, the gym leader of Petalburg. Unlike you, Maple, your dad looks like he really is tough.

…No one would miss you Brandon. God knows you disappear for long enough at a time. I could make it look like an Ursaring found you. It wouldn’t be hard.

Um… Right then. I’ll be seeing you!

So then, Brandon’s going to take Dad on then. Well then. I think it’s about time I paid a visit to dear old dad. Along the way, though…

Let’s visit an old friend….

*Will Maple’s visit be successful this time? Will she be able to beat her dad? Let’s find out!*

07-01-2009, 08:46 PM
Researcher’s log, Date…. Whatever it is. Like Tuesday? I don’t even know anymore. Here’s what I do know though:

I am awesome.

First off, I regained my honor from Brawly, that prick back at the second gym on that ridiculous item. Turns out that his fighting types are incredibly weak to bouncy pigs that are at least five levels higher than it is. Who would have guessed?

Turns out his badge only really lets me use Flash outside of battles. Because god knows that’s what I really wanted to do with my precious move slots. Bad enough I have to have Rock Smash on a move… Anyway, Brawly was really a warm up. A warm up for Dad.

It’s been nearly a year since I last saw him, when he had me catch Wally’s Ralts. In that time, I’ve beaten gyms, been lost in demon houses, and generally come to dislike a lot of exploration. Mental note for the future: Make lab researchers come to me with their shit. I am not crawling around another mountain any longer than I have to.

Anyway, it turns out dad has his gym laid out in a fairly ingenious manner. While he only uses Normal type Pokemon, each of the rooms in his gym have a different challenge. These challenges are presented in a single trainer with a single Pokemon. Said Pokemon excels at one strategy or another. The challenges are:

Accuracy, Speed, Confusion, Defense, Strength, One-Hit KOs, and Healing.

Under normal circumstances, it would difficult to fight against such specialization. Luckily, I hardly ever fall under normal conditions.

Percy, while incredibly creepy nine time out of ten (Seriously, he watches me sleep. He. Watches. Me. Sleep. I have Bones stand guard over me at night these days, since Leekcelot can’t do much against him.), has a ghost type. While this means that two of his moves don’t affect the members of the gym at all, it also means they can’t touch him.

This means that Percy is my secret weapon against Dad. God help me. Screw Dad, though.

Fine, as I promised, we will have a Pokemon battle.

Not even a “Hi”? I see you’re as bad as always.

Maple… I’m so happy that I can have a real battle with my own child.

Yeah, I guess giving me a Ratata and then having me fight your Slaking wasn’t fun anymore, was it.

But, a battle is a battle! I will do everything in my power as a gym leader to win. Maple, you’d better give it your best shot, too!

You know I will Dad. You always know.

*So as it turns out, two of his four Pokemon can’t touch Percy. Guess how many times I had to fight him. The answer is one. Man, he’s usually a bigger stop gap as well.*

And Bones evolved! This is the best day ever. Ever.

Well then, before you run off to do whatever it is you wanted to, I just wanted to let you know how proud I am of you.

What? You mean it?

Yeah, of course I do. All that time I was so hard on you, it was because I really wanted you to become the very best you could be at whatever it is you wanted to be. That’s why I’ve gotten you a present.

You mean it? You really got me a present to help me become a better Professor? Oh, thank you Dad, I take it back, you’re not such a-

After you’ve finished with this league, I’ve pulled a few strings and gotten you a gym on one of the numbered islands near Kanto. Now I know, it’s not exactly a main stream gym, but it’s your own. And you deserve your own gym, you excellent Pokemon trainer you. Don’t thank me, I’m just doing my fatherly duty.

…Done. I am never visiting you again. Tell mom I say hi.

And that brings us to now. I’ve beaten five of the gyms, I’ve met two groups who need to die, and Leekcelot is getting anxious. I think it’s time we hit up eastern Hoenn, now that we can Surf.

But first, maybe a bit of a break.

Next time, on They Are Comfy and Easy to Wear! Let’s Play Pokemon Emerald!: Seriously, more? You want some more? Well, the next update will be something special. Something unique. It will rock your socks off. Or maybe mildly impress you. Or maybe not.

07-01-2009, 08:57 PM
BAM! Six posts worth of update. 80some screens of Pokemon. A continuing more coherent than Transformers 2. And y'know what folks?

There's more on the way.

But not for a while, because the next couple updates will be special. I burned through four gyms and the first major plot point with the teams, so there really isn't that much left, honestly. We've got the next three gyms and the final showdown. I won't have this thread wrapped before its one year anniversary, so instead I'll do something special.

Something awesome. Maybe.

Anyway, I really don't have much to add. I picked up a Spoink, who needs a nickname, and it's already a better psychic than Alena ever was. Percy proved his worth, though his tenure may be coming to an end due to the sudden need for a Surfer. Leekcelot is still awesome, Bones is more than pulling its weight, and Leafia (who was not nicknamed Leafia because I forgot the nickname, that is rectified now) is a welcome addition.

Right, I would have a team photo, or a box photo, or an anything photo, but I kind of screwed up the save file. So I'll have to replay... just about all of this update!

Luckily, that gives me time to grab screen shots for the next update. So be patient, loyal viewers! While updates of They Are Comfy and Easy to Wear! Let's Play Pokemon Emerald! are few and far between, I'm thinking of you, the viewer constantly.

And I'm basking in the after glow of this update. It may not be the best written or most coherent, but damn if I'm not proud I got something done.

Mr. Bungle.

I am telling you that you must have it.

Because it is Spoink and Spoink is the greatest.

No, Alena! ;_; Yay, Leafia! :D

If we're gonna go with Spoink, I say we name him Ganon and terrorize everything in our path with Confuse Ray. Though honestly, I'd rather we keep Alena since Gardevoir is better at team support than Grumpig due to that impressive movepool of hers.

Oh, and once you clear up that sandstorm? You're gonna train a Trapinch and you're gonna like it, mister.

Right, I think I mentally knew about Ganon as a name, I just didn't make the connection in the marathon. Unless anyone has a better idea, we're going to be unleashing a powered up pig unto the world. And Alena isn't gone forever! Just off the main team for a while.

Oh, and once you clear up that sandstorm? You're gonna train a Trapinch and you're gonna like it, mister.

Yes sir. But Trapinch is lame!

The Battle Frontier? :3c

Better. You'll see. You'll all see.

No, Trapinch is awesome.

Go with Ganon, definitely. Pappy is right on the money here. Especially about Trapinch.

You know, I think I'm liking Grumpig more by the minute.

Hey, do you all know how old this is? This is almost one year old, and I am a little over half way through the game.

I have family members who are younger than this. This boggles the mind.

Anyway, I have the format for the next update nearly nailed down, I've just got to put all the images in and such, so this is just to let everyone know that you have until Wednesday to get your votes in for which 'chan you want to see. This contest is rather funny in that it is currently a three way tie. Way to be decisive folks.

Oh, and if there's anything else you want to see covered, whether it's some aspect of the system or otherwise, let me know somehow. I'm not sure what I can add to the discussion that isn't discussed to death in other sources, but I will at least do what I can to consolidate said discussion and give my own editorial view. It's something approaching fun!

07-20-2009, 04:47 AM
I touched on this a little bit earlier, but I'd like you to cover Hoenn's Battle Frontier a bit if you could. It doesn't have to be a full run of the place; Just covering how each one operates would be good enough for guys like me who are Emerald-less.

My vote stays with the kicking fiend for now, but feel free to switch it to Topman if no one breaks the tie. I'm a helper!

08-03-2009, 06:36 PM
Slightly over a year ago, I started an endeavor that I never imagined would take me... well, over a year. Well over a year, even.

That's right, I started playing Shin Megamit Tensei Nocturne. And I guess I started this too. I'm not here to talk about Nocturne though, I'm here to talk about Pokemon Emerald.

Specifically, I'm here to apologize for my tardiness. I'm taking my own sweet time, and it has probably cost me readers. This isn't completely my fault, because the last year has been fairly hectic on my end, but man. I have family members younger than this thread. I've seen friends married and divorced in the time it took me to get to this point.

Now, this is a double edged blade, because having this thread last forever means that I have the dubious honor of having the longest lasting Let's Play on these forums. For what little that counts.

But still, I'm not willing to let this go another year. And for those who have stayed with me all this time, I've got nothing to say. Your words of encouragement have been great, and I'm glad I've been able to offer even a modicum of enjoyment to you all.

In that regard, I've made you all a birthday present. To honor this thread's birthday. See, this was going to be more topical, but I got kidnapped by some friends to celebrate my 21st birthday a year late, and I ended up not being able to remember Friday, Saturday, and Sunday beyond the advice that four Irish Car Bombs are not to be ingested in one sitting.

My escapades aside, here. I made this for you. (http://www.sixmeans.com/misc/tyrogue.pdf) I hope you enjoy.

It's pdf format made in Adobe InDesign. It's not the best thing I've ever done, but it gave me more practice with InDesign, which is useful.

Thanks for the opportunity for a great year. Here's to hoping that I don't last another.

EDIT: Special thanks to Lucas for the usage of webspace. SendSpace just doesn't seem proper for a gift.

Also I should mention that Maple now has a Tyrogue and Trapinch. I'll try to get an updated 'mon list soon, but we all know how that goes when I say I'll follow a deadline. SPOILERS: It doesn't.

I'll tip the votes for the one that kicks things. Because kicking things is awesome. That is, if you hadn't already decided. I'm slow and didn't see a bunch of posts.

Now, this is a double edged blade, because having this thread last forever means that I have the dubious honor of having the longest lasting Let's Play on these forums. For what little that counts.

Actually, I think Elfir's FFX LP has been going on for longer since she started a month before you and has gone on hiatus since, not to mention some of the abandoned LPs that have been running since the beginning. You'll have to work a little bit harder for that dubious award. ;)

But seriously, I'm just glad the LP's still running! There's a bit of a delay, sure, but every time you're late you bust out something awesome like that Tyrogue primer. Just make sure to evolve that Trapinch into a Flygon and you'll be all right in my book.

08-04-2009, 05:45 PM
Unspoken: Fail to evolve that Trapinch into a Flygon and this LP isn't getting into the archives.

Hmm, this thread seems a little dead. Thankfully I’ve got just the thing.

Ladies and gentletyrants, They are Comfy and Easy to Wear- Let’s Play Pokemon Emerald is back once again and this time under new management. Rai has handed the torch off to me and I will be working hard to deliver an unforgettable experience to all of you, or at the very least bring a close to the longest running Let’s Play in the world. ED note: may not actually be the longest running LP in the world.

Thanks to computer crashes, memory wipes, and the universe being opposed to Let’s Plays in general, I have a fair bit of ground to make up. Expect to see regular updates in a coming future though!

There’s still a bit of housekeeping to take care of here. Most importantly, what will Maple do with her Tyrogue?

Currently there are two votes for this-

Two votes for this-

And two votes for this-

This question is very important because you can either set me up with a Pokemon that is exceptionally powerful and will go a long way in kicking Azurills and taking Unowns, or you can compound on the headache of having to bring a Farfetch’d through the Elite Four. Go out and mobilize your friends so they come to the polls for your favorite fighting-type! Turnout is vital for any successful democracy after all. You do love freedom, don’t you?

The most important part of any pokemon experience is using your favorite pokemon and never about using the strongest around, that’s what losers do. Along with drugs. Since I recently conquered Soul Silver using a team composed of some of my favorites, I’ll be doing my best to use yours. That means lots of opportunities for voting and lots of opportunities for you guys to stick me with suboptimal pokemon that never get enough use. Remember, the catchphrase for every Let’s Play should be ‘suffering so you don’t have to!’

Since everyone has very personal pokemon experiences, I’d like you all to have the chance to offer some of your own tales of victory, woe, and generally just good times. Thus, anyone who has the patience to sit down and type up something about their experiences, scrounge up fanart, or just take the time to do anything awesome gets their vote to count extra thanks to my super-secret polling algorithms and aggregation methods. This is ‘democracy’ in action.

Guess it’s time to get back to work. Come on Sir Leekcelot, I smell adventure and lucrative memoir royalties in the future! …all for the sake of science, of course.

Previously on Pokemon Emerald!

Maple’s friends and allies grew in numbers…

…as well as strength.

With the support of her comrades, the aspiring Pokemon Professor was able to conquer four gyms and claim as many badges!

Even her demanding father, Norman of the Petalburg gym, recognized her achievements!

I can tell by the number of BADGES you've earned.

But the Pokemon League Challenge may be the least of all of Maple’s worries. Two clandestine organizations battle throughout Hoenn, seeking to make their will manifest and to manipulate the environment to their own, heinous ends.

They are the avaricious Team Aqua…

…and malevolent Team Magma.

They are at once opposed to each other, but both seek to spread corruption, chaos, and turmoil. They will stop at nothing to impose their fiendish desires on Hoenn. Do Maple and Leekcelot have the strength to end the machinations of these reprehensible evil-doers and complete the Pokemon League Challenge? Or will she be forced to choose between her dreams and her duty…?

Captain Keene
06-30-2010, 08:09 AM
Only one thing was for certain…

…her greatest challenge as a Trainer had come. Could Maple triumph over her own father and claim her fifth badge?

Alright Dad, let’s rumble.

Indeed she could. Now with five badges to her name, Maple sets her sights on Fortree City to add another badge to her growing collection.
I am officially caught up to where Rai left off. A substantive update will follow in the next few days.

The current roster of available pokemon is thus. The egg contains a Wynaut, if I’m not mistaken. If there’s something in here that someone wants to see in Maple’s team just let me know. Since, I didn’t see anyone suggest a name for a Trapinch in the thread I gave it a placeholder that I thought might be acceptable, if anyone has ideas I’ll change it.

Now would also be a good time to start talking about our final team. We’ll start with Leekcelot since Pokemon tradition states that you must always take your starter with you to the finish.

Farfetch'd, The Wild Duck Pokémon. The sprig of green onions it holds is its weapon. It is used much like a metal sword. Lives where reedy plants grow. They are rarely seen, so it's thought their numbers are decreasing. It can't live without the stalk it holds.

Farfetch’d is a poor pokemon. Its statistics are all well below average, no stat stands out above the rest, it has an uninteresting and overly common typing, and is rounded out by an extremely shallow movepool. The only thing that Farfetch’d has going for it is its unique held item, the Stick. A Farfetch’d with a Stick receives a boost in the critical hit rate for all of its moves. In my opinion, any build for Leekcelot will need to involve a Stick and crit-fishing to be effective and compensate for his lackluster attack stat.

My current favored build for Leekcelot is this:
Item- Stick
-Aerial Ace/Fly
-Steel Wing/Iron Tail
-Swords Dance/Agility

Slash benefits from STAB and its already high critical rate that will be boosted further by the Stick. It will form the core of our offense. Aerial Ace gets STAB and super effective hits on Bug and Fighting-types, plus it never misses. Fly is less accurate but has 10 more base power (15 with STAB) and gives Leekcelot some out of battle utility. Since we aren’t dealing with human opponents I don’t anticipate the wind-up round will be an issue. Steel Wing hits fairly hard and offers coverage against Rock-types. Iron Tail could be another option with its higher base power, but the lower accuracy is a major turn-off to me. Lastly, Swords Dance will allow Leekcelot to hit harder while Agility will give him a chance to strike first. Both will be potentially valuable to compensate for his low base stats, but getting multiple buffs off successfully seems improbable to me.

Already significantly late on my first substantive update. This resurrection is out to an auspicious start. On the bright side I may be significantly closer to gainful employment. But onto the main event!

*Maple Audio Log 16-45*

After beating Dad I ran into Wally’s father. Apparently Wally’s doing pretty well at raising that Ralts of his, even after I stomped on his dreams and stole his lunch money outside of the Mauville Gym. …wow, I’m kinda a jerk, aren’t I? Anyway, he gave me an HM that teaches my pokemon how to be used like a surfboard.

Any water-type can swim of course, and plenty of pokemon that aren’t can too, but it takes a certain level of ‘tude to let a trainer hang ten. Or something like that I guess. All I know is that Pancho makes a pretty great board. It’s actually kinda rad.

I had planned to head straight on to Fortree City to go after the next Gym and get my next Badge, but while passing through Mauville Wattson gave me a call. He said there was a problem with the New Mauville powerplant and that I was the only person in the world he could possibly count on to fix it. I’m not anything close to a repairman -I’m trying to be a researcher for Acreus’ sake- but he said it was just flipping a switch and promised a great reward.

“I’m pretty good at simple tasks,” I thought. “I like free stuff. This’ll be great!”

Do you know what it’s like to walk over and think you’re picking up an item, but get a Voltorb instead? And then get shocked by it? IT’S TERRIBLE THAT’S WHAT IT IS! And of course a Magnemite just had to attach itself to my PokeNav and completely scramble the memory, which is why I’m having to make this stupid audiolog after the fact!

…anyway I threw that stupid switch and then ran out of that horrible place. Although it was kinda cool when E.Honda threw a Voltorb into the wall and it exploded. Wattson gave me the TM for Thunderbolt, which is pretty nice. He also managed to fix my PokeNav. Good for him. If he hadn’t he’d be replacing it. These things aren’t cheap, you know?

Excuse me, Ms. Maple?

Oh, they’ve been treated? Thanks.

Now I can finally get back to what I came here to do, not playing repairman.

*log end*

The channel bisecting Route 118 actually isn’t that wide or deep, I probably could have swum across if I packed my swimsuit. But that would have meant not surfing on top of Pancho’s totally radical sombrero.

Wouldn’t you agree?

Um, sure? It’s kinda in the name there…

Hmm! We’re of identical minds! Hmm! Take this Good Rod!

Thanks? I’m never one to complain about free stuff.

Wherever there’s water, try your luck at fishing.

I ran into a TV crew nearby that fisher. I didn’t get a chance to snap any pictures because Pancho and E.Honda beat them too quickly. They interviewed me about the fight afterwards and I told them it wasn’t very interesting. They acted pretty cheerful, but I swear I could hear sobbing as I walked away.

Then I run into this guy…
It’s me, Steven! We met in the cave near Dewford.

So you’re totally not some creepy stalker? Thank goodness! Leekcelot, dial 911.

Have you met many kinds of Pokemon since I last saw you? There are many, many kinds of Pokemon in this wide world of ours.

Some people used to think that there were only 150. Those were the days, eh? No, it’s a nine followed by a one, followed by a one!

If you wanted to raise only your favorites, that’s fine. Perhaps you find it more fun to raise all sorts of Pokemon. As a Trainer of Pokemon, what do you think?

I’d like to finish the Pokemon League some time before the heat death of the universe. Send! Hit send!

Of course, it’s not any of my business. It would be nice if we were to meet again somewhere.

Oh thank Arceus he left. Leekcelot, we’re putting 911 on speed dial.

The tall grass snares bike tires. There’s no way you can cycle here.

After being accosted by that stalker-ish guy I run into this. Just great. This grass is taller than I am! I can’t see more than a few inches in front of my face like this! And it’s raining! Leekcelot, you’re on machete duty. E.Honda, if there are any raptors here, you know what to do. Pancho, get on my shoulders, that hat of yours is good for more than hanging ten on. Percy? Stop staring at me, you’re acting creepier than usual.

A battle starts the instant we meet!

Oh-no, it’s worse than raptors. The grass is infested with mimes.

No reward? What gives? I thought beating groups of trainers with silly/stupid gimmicks meant rewards! I want more than pocket change for this!

Is that the bastard child of a sauropod and a palm tree with bananas for a beard? That’ll do nicely.

Captain Keene

For someone on an adventure you’re traveling awfully light.

Hey, waste not want not.

True, I should have stocked up on mime repellant. Do they make annoying trainer repellant too?

Pokemon Rangers, that’s who!

Are you the Red Ranger?

To break away from civilization and awaken the wild spirit within! That’s our vision.

Oh, you’re one of those new-age groups. You were better when you used dinosaurs.

What the?! You were hiding under a sheet!

My surprise attack ended in failure…

Well of course it did, you were hiding under a sheet. Do you think that you’re a ninja or something? What are you kids watching these days?

Wait a second are those…?

No… NO!

Hey, you! Please don’t go near the weather Institute.

Oh yes, not suspicious in the least.

Hey, you! Stay away from the Weather Institute. It’s not safe.

Oh wonderful, it’s the pirate wannabes. And their latest step in their fiendish plot for world domination is to… take over a weather institute? Guess I have to play hero again. Hey Leekcelot, got anything I could use for a scarf?

Research Log

There are many unusual species of pokemon in the world, but few are quite as odd as Magnemite. Near as we can tell, Magnemite is entirely artificial in construction, although it does display behavior similar to ‘normal’ pokemon. They communicate with one another via electromagnetic waves, which leads some specimens to have unintentional ‘conversations’ with electric-type pokemon or electronic devices. Usually they are content to consume electricity from such pokemon or devices, however. The hard outer shell gives them impressive defensive capabilities and they are able to discharge great amounts of stored electricity, but their heavy bodies leave them lacking in agility. Although resistant to most types of attacks, they are extremely vulnerable to ground-based attacks and do not fare especially well against fighting or fire attacks either.

Voltorbs, much like Magnemites, are entirely artificial but likewise display behaviors similar to normal pokemon. Likewise, they consume electricity for sustenance. Although displaying strong flocking behaviors, Voltorbs are rarely social with other pokemon species or humans, and they often react aggressively when their territory is invaded. This can become quite dangerous as the construction of the Voltorb makes it extremely volatile and prone to violently exploding. Extreme caution is advised in areas infested with Voltorbs as they are also known to impersonate pokeballs or item balls and are capable of reaching high speeds by rolling their bodies.

Linoone is the evolved and matured form of Zigzagoon. Although an exceptionally fast runner, Linoones chronically suffer from a ‘tunnel vision’ syndrome at high speeds where its vision progressively narrows until peripheral vision is effectively nonexistent. Because of this, Linoones regularly have to come to a complete stop before they can make any sort of course correction. Additionally, the species appear to have difficulty processing curves, preferring to operate on sharp angles. Trainers will find Linoones valuable for their high speed as well as their compatibility with a great number of HM moves that may be needed to traverse the environment. Otherwise it is a relatively normal pokemon.

Tropius is the monstrous yet amazing lovechild of a brontosaur and a banana tree. With wings. I can’t really think of anything else to say. The thought of eating the fruit that makes up its beard at once terrifies and intrigues me.

In all seriousness, Tropius tend to be a tropical species, although migratory patterns and competitive pressures have caused pockets of the species to form worldwide. Young Tropius lack the distinctive fruit beard of elders, which grows as the individual consumes large quantities of fruit. The exact nature of the beard appears to vary based on the fruit consumed by the individual. The fruit of Tropius is a favorite treat in the tropic regions where the species is native and it is hailed for superior flavor and texture. The nature of the fruit beard has lead some scientists to theorize that the predecessors of the Tropius lacked the plant-like features that distinguish it today and that these developed over the course of generations and continual consumption of tropical flora. Tropius are a sturdy breed, but suffer from a number of crippling weaknesses.

Here's a brief summary of Maple's latest acquisitions.

Voltorbs are very fast and that’s about it stat-wise. Bashful is a neutral nature, not great but it could be a lot worse. Soundproof isn’t the best ability around, although immunity to the confusion-inducing supersonic is sort of nice. Static would have been better though.

Magnemite has great special attack and good defense, but its speed is rather poor. The steel type gives tons of resistances, but also a terrifying 4x weakness to ground combined with the electric type. A quirky nature is also neutral. Magnet Pull ability is complete garbage, but Sturdy’s immunity to OHKOs probably wouldn’t see much use either.

Tropius balances both its two offensive and defensive stats, although it slightly favors the specials. It’s rather bulky, but a defensive game is undermined by its weakness to five types, including a 4x weakness to ice. Still, it does resist three types and nullifies ground. A careful nature increases special defense at the expense of special attack, not something I like since grass moves are all special-based in this generation. Chlorophyll doubles a pokemon’s speed in sunny weather, raising Tropius from mediocre to surprisingly swift. It also offers spectacular synergy with Sunny Day and Solar Beam.

And because there was never a chance to overview these two earlier…

Spoink favors special defense over special attack, but it still makes a solid cannon and its speed is acceptable. I couldn’t have asked for a better nature than modest, which raises special attack and reduces attack. Thick Fat is an excellent ability and gives Spoink resistance to fire and ice attacks, much better than Own Tempo. Frankly, I couldn’t have asked for anything better with Ganon here.

Trapinch’s attack is HUGE for an unevolved pokemon, too bad all its other stats are junk, especially speed. These problems are remedied as it evolves and becomes a very balanced pokemon in Flygon. The addition of the dragon type adds a number of good resistances at the expense of a 4x ice weakness. The bold nature increases defense at the expense of attack. This isn’t too great right now, but is less of a problem with its evolutions, which will have access to a large number of special type moves. Arena Trap is a pretty useless ability unless you’re hunting pokemon that regularly flee (which we aren’t). Thankfully this gets replaced in evolution by Levitate, which is great because it gives immunity to ground moves.

No summary for the Linoone, I just caught it because I kept running into them while searching for a Tropius. It might see use later on down the line as an HM slave.

I've been fiddling around with a Nuzlocke run of this game (basically, only catch the first Pokemon you see in each new area, and Fire Emblem permadeath rules), and I've kind of stalled out after the seventh Badge because OH CHRIST ENDLESS SEA ROUTES.

...I dunno where I'm going with this. Anyway, it's nice to see this moving again!

What do you want from the Weather institute you cosplaying rejects? Answer me!

so he sent us out.

What, a fiendish way to predict the weather? How terrifying!

You quit meddling!

But I’m just a grunt. How would I know what he’s thinking?

Good point, I’ll go rough up and interrogate somebody else. C’mere Percy, time to put that stare of yours to good use.

the weather. We’re here to take them!

That’s a no-no! We were here to get it first!

I’m in the middle of a pirate sandwich. Lovely.

Nothing a good beat down won’t solve.

Team Aqua definitely need it!

You want some sort of fiendish weather control device? Hate to break it to ya but another country already has one (http://science.howstuffworks.com/cloud-seeding.htm). And another can control earthquakes (http://reason.com/blog/2010/01/20/chavista-experts-say-us-milita). Or are your intentions more devious than I first thought?

You don't have any idea what we of Team Aqua are working towards!

And you do?

You stay out of our way!

You’re going to meddle in Team Aqua’s affairs?

Well I wouldn’t have had to if your idiot lookouts weren’t so conspicuously blocking the bridge I need to cross to get to Fortree City.

You’re either absolutely fearless, simply ignorant, or both!

D- none of the above.

You’re so cute, you’re disgusting! I’ll put you down, kiddy!

I... what? That doesn’t even make sense!

Leafia, blast it with leaves!

E.Honda. Wall. You know what to do.

It’s bad enough to have Team Magma blunder about, but now there’s you! What makes you want to sniff around in our business, anyway?

I don’t, but you guys keep getting in my way and won’t let me do anything until I beat you.

A Team Magma mob just passed the Weather Institute.

Oh great, am I going to have to fight them too?

They appear to be headed for Mt.Pyre!

We can’t waste any more time here! We have to hurry to Mt.Pyre, too!

Twice the stupid for half the price.

Ahahahaha! Team Magma, just you wait!

If we're lucky maybe they'll all kill each other.

Captain Keene

Well they weren’t all that tough. Between E.Honda and Leafia I KO’d most of their pokemon in the first round of battle.

It might be an odd way of thanking you, but take this pokemon.

Well sure, I’m never one to turn down free stuff, but it's kinda funny looking...

That pokemon changes shape according to the weather conditions. There’s plenty of them in the Institute-go ahead and take it.

Alright team, good work there. We beat up terrorists dressed as pirates and now they’re off climbing a mountain somewhere. Given their competence they’ll get themselves lost and try to take over a child’s lemonade stand. On to Fortree City!

Actually, I was just passing through after beating up some pirates-wannabes.

Now! It’s a battle, so battle!

Sorry Brendan, but samurai duck-types beat Mexican frog-types.

I’d say this wasn’t even fair, but he forced me to fight in the first place. >:(

Lesson of the day, Brendan, quadruple weaknesses hurt a lot.

That was a backhanded compliment if I’ve ever heard one.

I’d say you’re good enough to search for pokemon anywhere. Here, I’ll give you this. Try it out.

Oh sweet, now I can teach Leekcelot to moonwalk!

Use fly, and you pokemon instantly carries you to any town you’ve already visited.

That too. But I prefer moonwalking. Or maybe the anti-gravity lean.

But you need the Fortree Gym Badge to do that. Anyway, I have to move along.

Why are so many people following me?

I just passed by a trainer riding a bike. You just beat that trainer, didn’t you?

Yeah, he wasn’t that tough.

It was pretty obvious that you did. The kid looked really upset with a face all red from anger.

I also took his lunch money. Serves him right.

I sure seem to run into you often. Are you off to the Fortree Gym next?

Stop. Following. Me. I am serious. If you keep this up, so help me I will sic Percy on you. Or have E.Honda throw you into orbit.

I expect that you’ll do well at the Gym. Well, I’ll be seeing you!

Oh thank goodnehttp://i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac46/capnkeene/Emerald%20LP/u1s53.png

You are not a ninja. Ninjas do not work that way.

Well it’s about time.

Research Log

Castform is an artificially created pokemon that alters its entire bodily structure and typing in reaction to local weather patterns. Current research indicates that it can adopt three different configurations in reaction to drought conditions, rain, and snow. Castform appear to be particularly adept at abilities that alter the local environment. These abilities make it a wily foe that is difficult to pin down weaknesses on. Castform represents a significant refinement in pokemon engineering compared to its predecessors such as Porygon.

Castform’s stats are balanced but pretty average. Its lonely nature increases attack while decreasing defense. This is not very good because Castform’s gimmick means special attack is the important offensive stat. Normal is a rather blah typing, but the big deal here is its Forecast ability, which changes Castform’s type according the weather in effect. This ability enables Castform to deliver STAB for Fire, Ice, or Water. Sunny Day and STAB Fireblast is a terrifying prospect; plus this can bring in synergy with any pokemon who has Solar Beam. Rain Dance offers the potential of 100% accurate Thunders, which is gold; too bad Castform can't learn any powerful water moves. Sadly Hail doesn’t give any major advantages until Gen IV. Of course all this discussion may be moot as Castform’s signature move Weather Ball changes type along with Castform, allowing it consistent access to STAB for the given weather.

This LP has been pretty sick so far, although we need some more Tropius and probably something else.

No Tropius love this time, but stay tuned to see some dinosaur-tree action in the future.

First things first.

Magnemites, how do they work?

This one’s for you biology majors out there.

The people of Fortree city like to live in ‘harmony’ with nature or something, so instead of regular houses they all have tree forts. They still get electricity though. I don’t get it. You aren’t really living in harmony with nature if you have lightbulbs, TV, and indoor plumbing.

Sure you did buddy.

It seemed to squirm as it flew toward Route 131. By the way… Sniff… Um You, uh…smell singed.

Were you at a volcano or something?

What, a bush? Leekcelot here can cut them down in nothing flat. He’s like a weedwacker only adorable.

Oh what the hell is this? Come on, this isn’t even fair! Can’t I try to push it or something?

Grumble grumble grumble going to route 120 grumble grumble grumble

All I did since the last time I saw you was fight off an army of mimes and then beat up some pirate cosplayers.

Now, if I were to use this device on the invisible obstacle… No, no. Rather than describing it, I should just show you.

This is like those prank binoculars that put ink around your eyes, isn’t it?

I should just show you. That would be more fun.

You’re not doing a very good job of pretending to have my interests at heart here.

Maple, are your Pokemon ready for battle?

Look, I’m sick of going everywhere and fighting every random trainer I run in to. Can’t you just leave me alone?

But thou must!

Maple, show me your true power as a Trainer!

Steven used the Devon Scope. An invisible Pokemon became completely visible!

Or just a fat chameleon. Take it down, Miracle!

I just had my Magnemite shock it a bunch. It’s not all that impressive.

Your Pokemon have bviously grown since I first met you in Dewford. I’d like you to have this Devon Scope. Who knows, there may be other concealed Pokemon.

Thanks. This wasn’t entirely creepy for once.

Maple. I enjoy seeing Pokemon and Trainers who strive together. I think you’re doing great. Well, let’s meet again somewhere.

Only if there’s more free stuff in it for me. Also, stop following me.

“The bird user taking flight into the world.”

There was a Kecleon in the way. It took one look at Leekcelot’s stick and ran away.
Somebody remind me why I couldn’t do this earlier?
Anyway, I can go to the Fortree Gym now. But first I think we might need a little bit of training…

That’ll do nicely.

Every gym has a gimmick. Winona has these little turnstile gates. They’re not exactly difficult to deal with.

I’m not letting you witness that lovely sight!

This gym is infested with fanboys. I feel dirty.

You could call it a… shocking development.

He blushes when he says this. I want to get out of this place as soon as possible.

Here is the most difficult obstacle with turnstiles in this entire gym. It’s still pretty simple too, just…
…and you’re done.

I have become one with Bird Pokemon and have soared the skies…

Lady, I’m just here for a badge, I don’t need to know about what you do in your free time.

However grueling the battle, we have triumphed with grace…

Let’s see your grace against my animate pile of magnets.

Witness the choreography of Bird Pokemon and I!

This goes about as well as could be expected. Note to self: flash-fried Swablus smell quite delicious, explore possibility of chain restaurant.

She follows up with an Altaria. Thankfully I swapped Miracle out for Ganon, this thing knew Earthquake and would have wrecked its day.

It still got Ganon after doing a crazy interpretive dance. I followed up with Bones and her earth-shattering headbutts did the Altaria in.

I countered her Tropius with Sir Leekcelot himself. After a quick beak-sharpening courtesy of Swords Dance the poor thing didn’t stand a chance.

Miracle couldn’t drop Winona’s Skarmory in one shot, so she dragged the battle out a few more rounds by using all of her hyper potions on it. Not that it did her any good.

Never before have I seen a Trainer command Pokemon with more grace than I…

Um, thanks? As long as we’re trading compliments you’ve got a nice hat.

In recognition of your prowess, I present to you this Gym Badge.

TM40 contains Aerial Ace. Its speed… No Pokemon should be able to avoid it.

… … … … … … …

You’re really abusing those ellipses… Seriously, that’s a nice hat though. Do you know where I could get one? Do they make them in green?

Alright everybody, good work out there today. We’re up to six badges now. SIX! There are only two left, that means we’re 75% of the way up to the Elite Four! I can smell the glory and accolades already! Premium chow all around tonight, my treat.

Hello, this is Maple.

YOU! I put you on the blocked list! How did you get through?

Just as I thought, you won at the Fortree Gym.

I did that three minutes ago. How can you know this stuff?

Your strength… Perhaps you really are the Trainer that I’ve been searching for.

LEAVE. ME. ALONE. Why can you not get that through your head?

Remember, you have a fan in me. I’ll be cheering from the sidelines.

I am getting a restraining order.

Keep up the great work!

Research Log

Kecleon are a reptilian species of pokemon that are most notable for the incredible ability to alter their body coloring and patterns nearly instantaneously. The colors they can express are so detailed and varied that they can effectively turn themselves invisible. Kecleon use this color-changing ability to hunt prey, evade predators, and generally make a nuisance of themselves to humans in forested areas. The species depends heavily on its camouflage, and if detected it is often quick to flee. When forced to battle, Kecleon utilize their abilities to mimic their typing to a foe’s attacks, making them difficult to damage consistently.

The Zubats of the sea, Tentacool infest every ocean known to mankind and are just as annoying. Tentacool contain large amounts of toxins, which they use to stun and kill prey before consuming it. They primarily drift along ocean currents, but are known to migrate significant distances if prey becomes scarce in the area. Although mass migrations of Tentacool can become dangerous and ecologically destabilizing, they are a relatively weak Pokemon and are more often out-competed or outright predated by native inhabitants. The species is relatively simple, not known for any significant intelligence or complex behavior patterns.

Grumpig is the matured form of Spoink. Unlike Spoink, Grumpig’s hind limbs are fully developed and strong enough to support its body weight. Its cardiovascular system has strengthened as well, and no longer needs regular external disturbance to maintain circulation. Grumpig has incorporated the pearls is carried as Spoink into its cranium, removing the risk that it might lose the focusing mechanisms for its psychic talents. It performs odd dances when utilizing psychic abilities, possibly as a means to help focus the body and mind better for these abilities.

The ‘evolved’ (and I use that term loosely) form of Magnemite. Magneton is composed of three Magnemite that have aligned their magnetic fields and linked themselves with one another in a form of symbiosis. This composite form allows the constituent Magnemite to share energy between each other and to coordinate electromagnetic discharges, increasing their intensity and strength. This linking may be a reaction to environmental stressors or some strange form of mating. In Magnemite communities, Magnetons seem to occupy Alpha positions analogous to pack animals. Behavior otherwise is similar to Magnemite’s. Attempts to artificially link over three Magnemites together to form a ‘Super Magneton’ have all ended in failure.

Kecleon has great special defense and good attack. Its other stats are nothing special, but speed is the only one that is outstandingly bad. Impish increases defense while decreasing special attack. Kecleon’s special attack isn’t very good in the first place, and a boost to defense can make it an interesting tank. The real interesting thing about Kecleon is its ability; Color Change alters Kecleon’s type to be the same as the last move used on it. This offers interesting stalling options, as many types resist themselves. Sadly this also means that consistent STAB options are likely unviable. This pokemon is rounded out by a wide movepool, giving a wealth of interesting options if you are so inclined to request I use it.

Tentacool has great special defense, good speed, and its HP and special attack aren’t that bad once it evolves. Water/poison typing gives it a wide number of resistances, but the weaknesses to ground, electric, and psychic undermine its defensive abilities. Its quiet nature increases special attack and decreases speed. It doesn’t do anything to spoil potential special tanking, but reductions in speed are never attractive. The Clear Body ability will prevent it from suffering stat down effects, which also encourages tanking and is preferable to Liquid Ooze.

Seth Marati

I request that you nickname that Tentacool "Homeopathy", whether you use it or not.

That’ll do nicely.

This LP needs more Vibrava, but I guess it'll do for now. I guess. (Also: GAME OVER RETURN OF GANON)

Also also: Hooray for Pokémon Emerald LP! So, so glad we'll get to see Maple's journey reach the end. It's a bit late, but good on ya for reviving this, Keene.

Today's not-quite-update is brought to you by CivAnon (http://www.civanon.org/).

CivAnon (http://www.civanon.org/)- helping men and women everywhere to overcome their addictions to wonder-whoring, war-mongering, and raising small, obscure nations to stand the test of time.

Today we'll be discussing what to do with Jawesome! the Trapinch thanks to the interest shown by Mr. PapillonReel. Regrettably, she's still at level 29, but that’s close to the point where she'll evolve into Vibrava and finally be tolerable to use. Taking a Flygon to the Elite 4 certainly doesn't sound like a bad idea.

Flygon, The Mystic Pokémon. Flygon whips up a sandstorm by flapping its wings. The wings create a series of notes that sound like singing. Because the "singing" is the only thing that can be heard in a sandstorm, this Pokémon is said to be the desert spirit. Red covers shield its eyes from sand.

Flygon is a great pokemon. It has a wonderful typing combination, strong overall stats, a diverse movepool, and looks bloody awesome. It tends to get overlooked for the likes of Garchomp, but everything is hard-pressed to compete with one of the most powerful non-legendaries in the metagame. Flygon is good without being disgustingly over-powered like many of its cousin dragon-types, which is really something I would like to see more of in the game series.

Flygon's large movepool combined with good offensive stats can lend it to a variety of builds, the following is one that I think will offer some great offensive potential:

-Dragon Claw
-Flamethrower/Fire Blast
STAB Earthquake is simply too good to pass up, nothing else really needs to be said. STAB Dragon Claw gives us an effective 120 power attack that is only resisted by steel and can hit for super-effective against dragons. Worth consideration since one of the Elite 4 specializes in them. Frankly after those two moves, the rest of the set is just window-dressing. Flamethrower or Fire Blast gives coverage against grass and ice types, and her speed means she is quite capable of outrunning both of them on average. The only question between the two is whether to go for consistency with Flamethrower's higher accuracy and PP or to play risky with Fire Blast's incredible power. The last slot has a number of possibilities. Jawesome! can learn Solar Beam, but Pancho, Leafia, and Musasaurus all have greater synergy there. Iron Tail or Steel Wing are possibilities, but bring nothing to the table after Earthquake, Dragon Claw, and a fire move. Screech is an intriguing possibility, but a STAB Earthquake probably won't need help to get 1/2-hit KOs. The most appealing option I can think of is Crunch, which offers a counter to the ever-troublesome psychic types. If anyone has other thoughts, I would love to hear them.

Tune in at the regular time next week to see some side-questin' and Vibrava! Also, the return of contests!

By the way guys, does anyone have a better name than "Jawesome!"? I picked it as joke filler for the Trapinch, but it hardly fits a Vibrava or Flygon.

08-11-2010, 03:30 PM
The only problem with Flygon is its name.

Seriously, they really should have switched Salamence and Flygon's names.

Then it would be Bagon > Shelgon > Flygon.

Other than that, you're approaching Mossdeep's gym. Are you ready for it? Because seriously, in Emerald those two are hell. Heck, you probably should go with Crunch for that.

Aside from that, go with Flamethrower. Higher PP > Higher damage in-game.

08-11-2010, 03:52 PM
Tune in next time as I fail to evolve Trapinch into a Flygon!

Hey! My prediction proved true. Whodathunkit.

Anyway, that seems to be a pretty standard build for a Flygon I guess, if a bit boring. I mean, you're complaining about not having a fun choice for the fourth move, but the first three are more or less all you really need for most of the game, though I'd definitely go with flamethrower. Cooler name, plus it has higher accuracy.

08-11-2010, 06:50 PM
Accuracy and PP are generally more useful for the main game, since endurance is much more of a factor when exploring some of the longer routes, so yeah - go with Flamethrower. Crunch should also help since Psychic types are a fair bit more prevalent there than in the metagame and you've got a pretty tough Gym coming up in the future.

Shame he doesn't have U-turn (which is really his best option) or Stone Edge in Gen III, but ah well. Still: Flygon! I nicknamed mine Sirocco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirocco), so I say go with that.
