Looks like somebody's happy about it!

That's right, it's time for Suikoden II. Released in 1999 and very much an accidental sequel, Suikoden II ties to the first much more closely than any of the ones that follow. Set three years after the end of the first game, it follows events to the north of the Scarlet Moon Empire, in the City States of Jowston and the Kingdom of Highland. This region, included as a throw-away name to keep Teo busy while his son was causing trouble, gets fully fleshed out. Expect to see a LOT of returning faces, and a LOT of story threads to be picked up and fleshed out in later games. I've gotta wait for Brick's memory card to arrive so I can carry on the story of ○cDohl (that's right), but we can get things rolling in the mean time.

This is our young, mute protagonist, and he needs a name. I'm afraid to ask you guys what random gibberish I'm gonna have to type out for the next several months, but I guess tradition is tradition. So, what's it gonna be?

So, what's it gonna be?

How many spaces do we get?

SpoonyGundam

○cDohl

Actually, if I remember the glitch right, it only uses capital letters to replace parts of the name. So, for example, "Pants" would become "PcDohl," "PANTS" would become "PANTSl," and "pants" would stay "McDohl."

Does "○×∆□☆" have anything considered a capital letter in it? Who knows! I'm pretty excited to find out, though.

Hai Yo: Yes

For Clive: Just stop at the point where he gets shot like a punk. That's as far as I got in my playthrough of this game, and it felt like a fitting ending.

I also don't see how you could much farther into it than that without rushing through the start of the game, which would make you speed through the game and not show us the cool stuff.

I'm a hater though, so what do I know.

Gredlen
10-02-2008, 08:50 PM
I think the best way to handle the Clive subplot might be to actually have a concurrent playthrough solely for the purpose of getting all those scenes. Maybe someone else could do that, if it's too much work.

Nobuyuki
10-02-2008, 08:53 PM
I have a plan for dealing with the Clive quest, as well as the issue of the "real ending" versus the happy sunshine kittens ending that we'll get to eventually. As for Hai Yo, I wouldn't do it any other way.

Oh, and we've got 8 spaces for the name.

Pajaro Pete
10-02-2008, 08:56 PM
I named my Suiko2 Hero in my most recent game "Tomato"

My Suiko1 Hero was "Potato"

My Flame Champion is "Cashew"

Oh and you have to get the Teen Squirrel Squad. Yes I went there and yes they have to be in the Hero's party when he goes up against Luca

Elfir
10-02-2008, 08:57 PM
I sort of want the hero to have a really dull name, to contrast with the Toran region's naming practices. He's the hero so maybe we'll just call him Heero. (Or Hiro. Though the idea of such a sweet-faced little boy saying "I will destroy kill you" appeals to me.)

Kishi

Call him (-_-;;).

Sky Render

We already had ○×∆□☆, so how about ☆□∆×○? We could refer to him as "Strixo" once and then never refer to him as that again.

Matilda gate trick Y/N?

Y.

Trick to the Clive subquest: if you save your game, then play for six hours, then DIE, you retain all the levels you gained without actually adding anything to the clock. So you can use the Matilda glitch to raise everyone to like L40, then kill yourself, and it's like free levels being handed to you.

Or the gameshark thing, that works too!

Hero name: BobDole.

Alright, let's get real here. Let's get really real. Nobuyuki, you're a relative newbie on the forums. That obviously has nothing to do with your writing ability or your technical ability to do this LP. But that does mean you can abandon this project with little to no guilt. You've taken on something truly monumental and horrible here. When the LP subforum first started, a bunch of people rushed in and did some half-hearted LPs. Others did some great ones, but later abandoned them. We're already planning a massive group project for Suikoden III, and IV and V are sure to come not long after. You sort of have to see this thing through once you start. Speaking from experience, doing an LP of an RPG is a really long and excruciating experience.

I'm not saying you can't do it, I just want to make sure that you know what you're getting into and that you're going to see it through. If you want to back out, then that's fine. But don't start what you can't finish, you know?

If you decide to go through with this, then I wish you the best of luck.

P.S. Don't feel obligated to finish Clive's quest since that would make the entire game feel rushed and would hurt your LP as a whole.

P.P.S. Pancho is a great name for a main character.

You know, I've played this game four times and never saw the whole Clive subquest.

I'm an inch away from volunteering a parallel run myself. I've read that it's possible to collect everyone and do the Clive quest...and then I find that my PC runs the game perfectly and I remember that it is the best game ever.

No really, someone tell me to shut up. Please. My proper place on the LP board is reading, and I know it.

Now, now, Alixar, if he abandons this one, he will be strung up and destroyed utterly by all the peoples of the 'Time. Surely he was aware of this before starting, no need to get get all uppity. And Tanto was pretty new when he started Fire Emblem, wasn't he (I don't remember)? Though, honestly, that is a part of the reason why I stick to little bitty games.

I would like the New Hero to be called... Fungasm. Because that is the result of playing Suikoden 2, so it is therefor an appropriate name.

And I humbly request an overuse of Lorelai, to make up for her being underused in Bricks run. Yes, Mr. Road, I'm still bitter about that.

Yeah, I feel sorry for the guy who has to do that.

I understand the concern, but I do realize how much work this is going to be and I'm alright with that. I love this game and this seems like it'll be a fun, new way to go through it, while also showing it off to people who've never had a chance to play it. Like I told Brick, I am a student and that occasionally keeps me very busy so I can't promise I'll always be quick with the updates, but it is something I want to see through. He also has my address now, so if I do leave you know where to direct your unruly mob vengeance.

Still no consensus on the names. I'm gonna go ahead and say Heero and Eureeka are leading because neither of them are smiley faces. Any more ideas?

I'm kind of ok with this LP not going super-fast, since that gives us more time before the Suiko III run in which to wait for a PS3 screenshotting update that will make all our lives much easier. -_-

I think Hiro Protagonist is as excellent name. Obviously you wouldn't be able to input the last name, but we'd know it's there.

Also, Lorelai.

The hero of Suiko2 is always making this dumb scared rabbit face, so years ago I started calling him Scared Rabbit Boy, and have taken to naming him SRB in most of my playthroughs.

There's at least one member of Talking Time (and I suspect one or two others) you could irritate immensely by naming him either William or Makoto.

This LP will follow the adventures of Mr. Hiro Protagonist, mostly cause it’s easy to type. Having given him a name the game now asks if we want to import Suikoden save data. From Suiko II on this becomes a series tradition, importing save data from game to game. Doing this has different advantages from game to game, but it’s most worthwhile here. And for the record, no I’m not using ○×∆□☆‘s data at the moment. Don’t worry, it’ll all make sense eventually.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_212458.jpg
The game starts out with Hiro and his childhood friend Jowy in a camp outside of the Jowston border. They’re both members of Highland’s Unicore Brigade, a youth corps whose name is surly feared far and wide. I’m assuming that name was chosen over the Happiness Squad or the Friendship Platoon. The history of Highland and Jowston involves many skirmishes and border disputes, but a peace treaty had just been signed and the Kittens Army is scheduled to return to Hiro’s home town of Kyaro the next day.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_212513.jpg
Jowy mentions how relieved Hiro’s sister Nanami will be to see him again. Nanami and Hiro aren’t technically related, but both were orphaned by the war and raised by a man named Genkaku.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_212643.jpg
Wandering around the camp Hiro talks to some of the other soldiers, who say they can’t wait to get back home and in general just how much they love living.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_212859.jpg
Before reaching the forest Jowy has a thought: the only way to escape is through the woods, so the enemy may be using it to set up an ambush. Hiro agrees and they rush back to inform Captain Rowd.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_212935.jpg
As soon as they return to camp Hiro and Jowy (now on referred to as Hirowy) find Rowd talking with a mysterious man. Apparently the ambush had been staged to make it seem that the City-States had broken the treaty to attack. This is one of the areas that really sets Suikoden II apart. If you’re playing the original game for the first time, you’d have no reason to think it’s anything but a generic fantasy RPG for the first several hours. It deals with questions of ambiguous morality and the conflict of ideals instead of good versus evil, but it is for the most part a pretty straight forward, us-versus-them kind of game. Here we are, five minutes into Suikoden II, and we see the Unicorn Youth Brigade being slaughtered by their own country, all to justify going to war with a nation they’d just signed a peace agreement with. Welcome to Suikoden!

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_212942.jpg
Of course, the man behind this plan is the Highland Prince Luca Blight. Stronger than a thousand men, he’s the absolute face of evil and cruelty (though, as we’ll see later on, for arguably an understandable reason. Remember, there’s very little unambiguous evil in Suikoden). Luca is easily the game’s most memorable character. There’s a great, spoilerific write-up of his last moments on the site. Luca is going to be showing up a lot, and bad things usually follow.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_213036.jpg
Realizing the plan they were unwilling parts in, Hirowy rushes north to try to escape. There the path ends at a cliff overlooking a waterfall. They try to understand what just happened, only to be surprised by Captain Rowd and a group of soldiers. Looks like it’s time for battle #1!

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p2/capture_03102008_213104.jpg
Suikoden II’s battle system sticks fairly close to the original, though with some changes. I’ll get to those later, since these guys are little match to Hirowy, caught here in a Unite Attack.

Rowd runs off to find more soldiers. Unable to return the way they came, Jowy realizes there’s no other option but to jump. Before they do, they they promise that if they make it but are separated, they return to this spot. They each mark this promise by making a slash on the rock, then step to the edge and jump. This is a "But thou must" moment, but if you try to delay it you keep being attacked by soldiers. Interestingly, if you kill 108 of them before jumping the next section is in color instead of sepia. Exciting!

Amen. The whole game is beautiful and they spared not a single frame of animation for any sprite. The Iron Chef minigame really has to be seen in motion. Maybe I'll make some videos of it, if nobuyuki can't (for whatever reason).

I always assumed there was no transfer to Suikoden III, but someone said differently in Brick's LP. But what's the point if you can't recruit Riou or McDohl?

I think it was a much bigger deal in Japan, where you could transfer over Genso Suikogaiden save data. I don't remember specifics, but Suiko III and the Suikogaiden games are pretty closely tied and I think using that data opened up a lot more. We never got those games of course so Konami (fortunately!) flagged everything that would transfer over by default.

When you load over data from 2 to 3, you get two bonus plays for the theatre: The final stand of Barbarossa (Suikoden 1 play), and Neclord's final stand (Suikoden 2 play).

I've heard to get the first play, you have to load in data from 1 to 2 as well.

Fun facts:

2 to 3 loads in data correctly. So if you got a funky name like "NcDohl" in 2, that means in the play, he's referenced as "NcDohl McDohl".

The S1 play contains a hot remix of the Gregminster theme, and the S2 play contains a cool remix of the Neclord battle theme. These themes aren't on the OST.

Here we are, watching Hiro’s first tiny steps onto the giant world map. While he’s still kinda deformed it’s a huge step up from the janky little guy in the original. Camp Fliktor is at the bottom, and Ryube is just visible to the top. It’s a super long walk.

Hiro gets his flour and, proud of a job well done, decides to take a stroll through the town. Tuta actually insists but I don’t like to acknowledge he’s here. While walking about he finds a young girl who seems to be looking for France, and this…generous looking woman who tells us something is setting up soon.

Back to chores for Hiro when he returns to the fort. This time he’s gotta mop up oil spills that randomly showed up. These have got to be the laziest and/or sloppiest mercenaries ever.

Suikoden was a decent looking game, but Konami really raised the bar with Suikoden II. It’s not Odin Sphere levels of beauty but it is packed with tons of loving detail, unique animations and objects. Here we see that Hiro’s sprite changes to reflect the fact that he’s carrying an oily rag.

Hiro, having played Final Fantasy IV and realizing mist monsters are total pussies, agrees to team up with the circus folk. Also, unlike the first, this game is kind enough to realize if your party is changed you will probably want to change formation, and just asks you if you’d like to reorder. No more S range fighters sitting in the back cause you forgot they were there!

When we arrive at the pass border guards block our entrance, but Rina has an idea. I hate to present a scene in its entirety, but I think in this case I’m justified.

Alright, time for the game’s first dungeon! It’s fairly short and easy, but what do you expect? Battles in Suikoden II play out largely the same as the original, with the main options still being Fight, Run/Let Go, Bribe, and Free Will. The actual attack menu is the same as well, with the addition of Shift, which lets a character shift position forward or backward with the other character in his row. These bunnies are a welcome sight by the way, because they’re one of the few enemies that drop Double Beat runes. Getting one so early in the game makes a BIG difference…

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p3/capture_03102008_221143.jpg
…and luckily for me I find one almost instantly! As soon as I get to a runesmith this is going straight on Nanami.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p3/capture_03102008_221401.jpg
Further on, and after a conveniently positioned save point we get ambushed by the mist monster. This fight can actually be difficult. The mist monster has two forms, a physical form that attacks 2 to 3 times per round for around 30 damage, and a magic form that hits several random characters for about 15.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p3/capture_03102008_221419.jpg
http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p3/capture_03102008_221432.jpg
Here’s another new addition to Suikoden II: magic items. Rina here has no useful runes, but can cause some decent damage with this item, which is the same as a cast of level 1 magic from the Lightning Rune. Given the limited inventory space in this game these quickly become inefficient, but early on they can be useful.

Speaking of which, here's what he has to say about Eilie:

She's got a big inferiority complex towards her big sister. Who can blame her? After all, Rina is so much sexier.

Richmond likes 'em easy.

It's been years since I played the game, but if I'm not mistaken, wasn't there one female character who slept with everything that moved? And presenting her to the unicorn would make him kind of pissy?

That must be Anita.

Sierra also makes for interesting Unicorn recruiting, although in her case it's not really because she slept with anything that moved.

Anita is one of my favorites, mainly because of her personality. Not only is she a promiscuous drunk, but when you recruit her, you can do so by asking her out on a date. In most games she'd laugh it off and comment on how the protagonist is a cute kid or whatever, but Anita actually accepts, and even seems a bit excited at the prospect. The theme of the older, more experienced woman meeting a boy on the brink of adulthood and... teaching him things is one I'm quite fond of.

... I think I've said too much.

Inventory in the original was limited, but it’s made much more constricting in this game, as accessories and items now have to compete for the same spots. During battle characters are limited to only the items they have equipped, but equipping a stack of medicine means you have to forgo an accessory. So let’s say I want to give Rina these lovely cheek guards (I’m sure there’s a dirty joke to be made, but far be it from me to make it). She now has all of her available accessory slots filled up (again, dirty joke), so the only items she can use in battle is that stack of medicine. Again, it’s only a real concern in the beginning because runic healing becomes much more flexible and Hai Yo can cook up some truly exceptional foods for healing, but it is a little difference.

Back at Kyaro Hirowy and the circus people decide to part ways. Eilie tries to pick Hiro up, but realizing the slut apple doesn’t fall far from the skank tree he’s having none of it. (This is a good time to mention that, after the last update, I decided to check Rina’s backstory. Apparently during the course of this game she’s seventeen years old. This, along with Meg’s teen pregnancy just confirms that Suiko girls are whores.) Jowy is concerned about his family and runs off to his house, and tells Hiro he should check in on Nanami. Hiro, well aware of what a visit to Nanami entails, decides to take a little stroll through town first.

Talking to the townspeople shows how effective Luca’s ploy was. This is honestly the first time I’ve bothered to speak to them, and their reactions are a nice touch. Remember, Luca slaughtered the Unicorn Brigade to rile up support in Highland for going back to war with Jowston. The Unicorn Brigade was the pride of Kyaro, and undoubtedly many of these people lost their sons and are now absolutely willing to go along with the war. Luca’s misinformation worked perfectly on the people that it needed to.

For some reason this tree seems unusual, so Hiro decides to investigate. The investigation turns up…a flying squirrel wearing a cape? Yeah, I don’t know either. Mukumuku IS a Star of Destiny, but fortunately if you miss him here you can recruit him with a less batshit-insane method. Note that his presence does change the coming scenes slightly, though.

Alright, no delaying it further I guess. It’s time to meet Nanami. I’ve been pointing out here and there places where, visually, Suikoden II is a step above the first, but this is the scene that drives it home. Nanami has more frames of animation in this scene alone than in the entirety of the first game, I think.

Nanami barrages Hiro with questions about how he’s been. She mentions that the rumor is a pair of spies were responsible for the surprise attack. She trusts Hiro, but says that Captain Rowd is looking for him. Before they leave, she wants to pray to Genkaku, fearing they might not be able to come back.

As soon as they step outside soldiers appear, accusing Hiro of being a spy. Nanami’s not having any of that, so once again it’s time to fight our way out. As you’d expect, Hiro and Nanami get a unite attack. It’s a fairly standard, 2x damage and unbalance Nanami kind of unite, but with one difference. There’s a small chance that instead of helping out Nanami will hang back and relax while Hiro does all the work. It heals her slightly and prevents her from being unbalanced, but it also does far less damage. Thanks Nanami!

His father and brother abandoning him, all Jowy wants is to see his mother. Keep in mind, Hiro and Jowy are just 16 during the course of this game. They’re children. Reunited in a prison cell, Rowd comes by to tell them they’ll be executed at sunset. Rowd explains that their death is necessary for Luca’s ambitions, and that it was necessary for him to get out of the Unicorn Brigade and into a more lucrative position in the army. He apologizes for his actions and says, uncomforting, that you can’t fight destiny.

I'm really amazed at the sprite detail in this game. Undoubtedly one of gaming's last instances of detailed/careful sprite work.

I'm in total agreement that one thing Suikoden II does very well is remind you occasionally that the heroes are, indeed, children. It's not unusual for kids to go to war, unfortunately, but they're rarely the perfect heroes shonen characters always end up being.

On that topic, if I'm not mistaken, isn't Jowy's "father' in that scene not his real father? I think Luca mentions something about Jowy being illegitimate.

This LP is depressing for two reasons. 1) It makes me want to play Suikoden II again and I don't own it and 2) it makes me want to play Suikoden III again immediately after, but the aforementioned "not having II" thing keeps me from doing this.

I think Luca mentions something about Jowy being a Jedi.I forget the full details of Jowy's background (I think his mother gave birth to him in a previous marriage and this is his adopted father) but his mother is the only one in this family who cares about him and those bastards won't even let him see her.

Bonaparte’s attack is to inhale, chew, and spit out what remains of my party, undoubtedly soaking in saliva. I’m sure all throughout his life Hiro will never forget the wet, violated moment he has right now.

A few rounds later and Bonaparte calms down. Millie is, obliviously, happy to have him back. Hiro wants her and her demonic pig-rat to get the hell away, but she has a portrait so she decides to come along anyway.

Pilika was the one who found Jowy in the river, and her family brought him back to health. They just returned from Muse, the capital of the Jowston City-States to the west.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p5/capture_04102008_040742.jpg
Jowy goes to Pilika’s home and explains that he no longer has a place to return to. They tell him that he’s always welcome to stay with them. Pilika wants to discuss something with Jowy in private.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p5/capture_04102008_040821.jpg
While in Muse Pilika saw a wooden amulet she’d like to get for her father’s birthday. She asks Jowy to go pick it up for her. She gives him 70 potch she’d saved up from chores and Hirowy leave for Muse.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p5/capture_04102008_041114.jpg
A short walk to the west and Hirowy arrive at Muse. It feels appropriately grand for a capital city, easily dwarfing any of the places in the first game (and making me wish any modern RPG would put some time into their cities). Don’t worry, you’ll be seeing a lot more of it soon.

http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/dbowman97/p5/capture_04102008_041331.jpg
Hiro finds the item shop. The amulet was left by a customer who couldn’t pay his bill. Since it’s been there for so long the shop keeper agrees to sell it. For 500 potch. Hiro, being the nice guy he is, agrees to front Jowy the money.

Another great addition to Suikoden II, when you need to drag along a combat character but you don’t want to break up the band, you can just stick them in the convoy slot (I miss entourage). Doing this can also give you extra effects depending on the character, as we’ll see eventually.

I have to break my Let's Play radio silence to say KISS ARMY. I will not abide kittens killing things.

Not true. The game does not insert anything between the name you enter and "Army". If we choose Kittens, it will be rendered as "Kittens Army".

While I still like "Hooray!", I'm going to have to vote for Kittens over KISS, since that's what it's come down to.

Damn two-party system.

I will not have this army confused for filthy Kobolds.

Better to be confused as Kobolds than a bunch of pussies!

Sorry, that was way too easy.

Pussies are actually designed to withstand what most would call superhuman levels of stress.

too bad there's not enough character space for "of Darkness," but that'd be awful grammar anyway

brickrod's army. (stupid 8 chara limit)No love for the hardworking actual LP's author? I've often gone with tungwene's army or some variant before. I think most of us have.

Actually, I think I called my army the Excel Army when last I played the game.

I'm not sure if that was because I thought "Excel" was a cool word, or if it was because I was a huge fan of Excel Saga at the time.

I'm not willing to write out either option.

Are you sure it wasn't because you were a huge fan of spreadsheets back then?

We've all been through that phase. You don't have to feel embarrased.

On my first playthrough, I went with Kickass Army. It kind of changed the mood for some scenes.

I went with Suikoden Army because I couldn't think of anything.
