Dare you refute?!@@

Seriously, i'm downloading every title Gametap has just to let them run in the background while i do other things.

edit: hang on, many of these have awesome during-game music, too! Holy fuck, this is wonderful. I'm amazed at how long the tracks run.; Some have (wordless) verses, bridges and choruses going on for upwards of 3 minutes.

A lot of them sound kind of like New Order singles.

Highlights:

Vampire

Poltergeist

Professional Skateboard Simulator

Spike in Transylvania

Try playing the Commodore 64 cartridge games! They've got all the horrible gameplay without the annoyance of cool title screen music.

Oh, sorry, I read this topic as "title screens", not "title screen music".

In that case, Forbidden Forest (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxx6jvOAaJ4).

Try anything with music by Rob Hubbard. Thing On A Spring is meant to have pretty great music, for example.

(in reference to a Dante's Inferno game thread that never got off the ground.)

If you want good gameplay, you should probably stick with these games. (http://www.lemon64.com/games/votes_list.php)

/break bottle on bar and brandishes as a weapon.

Heh, them's fightin' words m'boy!

On a personal note, I played C64 INSTEAD of NES in the 80s, so while I am biased, you could just as easily say...

Run to the right + collect power up item + jump on mini-boss' head + repeat = Every NES game.

Which is wrong of course. I humbly submit you're playing the wrong games...

But if you are looking for crazy cool title music, here are some of my favorites:

Skate or Die
Times of Lore
Turbo Outrun
Yie Air Kung Fu

Wasn't Seven Cities of Gold originally a C64 title?

(Wikipedia says yes)

Because that wipes out the "horrible gameplay" side of the equation (when your 10th-anniversary remake gets some consideration in end-of-year awards, you know the original was great), and the title music was pretty damn good.

I should amend my first post by saying that i really don't know anything at all about the C64's history/library/etc. like i do most non-real-computer consoles, so my impression of the system's strengths and weaknesses was based entirely on the Gametap selections, which uniformly adhere to my above equation. They're all made/published by Codemasters, who have a loooooooooooong and varied history peppered with lots of good games, but not these. I guess i'll have to go... emulate!

Also, what is it with some of these games and copyright infingement? I found an Ocean-developed Contra-ripoff called "gizer" or something, and many titles have remixed pop tunes as their music.

Probably a case of no-one-gave-a-shit-about-Europe-itis.

And while we're on the subject, a bit of why-you-should-never-believe-Wikipedia:

Although Ocean was best known for its usually high quality licensed games[citation needed],

Yes, I know that when I was muddling through Darkman (aka the game with the loosest play control ever released) or TOTAL F'N RECALL that I was thinking "wow, this is high quality stuff."

Hey, they Needed Citation on that for a reason.

What the fuck would you cite for that? "Drunken ex-Ocean Employee Currently Living on Grate in Manchester"?

Gryzor. Which was the title of the arcade version of Contra in Europe. Ocean released ports of Gryzor for the C64 and other computers.

More than anything, I love how "ABANDON EVERY HOPE" crawls across the screen as you start to play, alongside such cheerful music.

Skate or Die

This one I just like because of many things on the title screen are animated just for the hell of it.

Yie Ar Kung-Fu

And I'm certain this one alone inspired more than one tune from Seiklus (http://autofish.net/clysm/art/video_games/seiklus/).

Gentlemen! You can just download the original soundtracks to these games in SID format and play them in a suitably equipped player. This archive here (http://www.hvsc.c64.org/) contains the music for about every C64 game ever made!

That's awesomely horrible! Sign me up! (Do you have to put in LOAD *,8,1?)

Also, wasn't there a DS comp of C64 games in the works for EU at one time? I remember was going to import it if it ever happened...

That intro music for Skate or Die is pretty basass, but the intro music for Skate or Die was great on the NES as well. It's the game's only redeeming feature--that and the pool joust, I mean.

Someone's second hand C64 was the first computer we owned. My brother had a BBS set up through his. It also couldn't play games because there were boxes all over the graphics, so consider me biased towards consoles.

Hey, the spiders in that Forbidden Forest game are some creepy shit.
