View Full Version : DODONGOS + BOMBING = Let's play Link: The Faces of Evil!

02-14-2009, 11:00 PM
Boy, I got myself into a project far vaster then I could have ever imagined. “Link: The Faces of Evil” is a game I’ve wanted to go through, and yet I could never find a way to force myself to play it. I hope that with this “Let’s Play” I can do that, and hopefully be able to be a source of some comedy amusement for some of you.

In terms of history of the CD-I, I will direct you to this retrospective (http://www.1up.com/do/feature?pager.offset=0&cId=3149883), as it does a hell of a lot better job than what I could do/say.

Also notes about how I'm doing this: It's going to be a mix of pictures, GIF's, and video (for the cutscenes, arguably the most important part of the game). I'm also using a real CD-I, recording the footage from one of my TV tuners (There is a CD-I emulator out there, but it's not very good. And why bother using that when I have the real thing (http://img81.imageshack.us/img81/2924/img0040fc7.jpg) ;) ). Also, I am not using any FAQ/guide in order to get through this game, I have not beat it before and I've only gotten maybe a half hour into it before doing this play through.

EDIT: Also, please tell me if any of the images are not loading, just in case ;)

So with that out of the way, let's get started!

So after booting the game, and selecting to start a new game, we get the opening cutscene...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-5365307.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HV3thI2ld6A)

Now we choose our destiny®! We can now pick where to go next. The cursor is automatically placed on Nortinka, so that's where Link will go first.

Nortinka is full of Wolfmen®, and magically appearing Orc/Dog men, which drop snowballs. These (and later, fireballs) will become EXTREMELY important later in the game.

Now Link goes left, defeats a few Wolfmen® and Orc/Dog men and enter an igloo.

Ahh, a key! This could be important! And only one Orc/Dog man, this should be no problem for Link!

Great, more Orc/Dog men appear... Now that's out of the way, let's get that key!

Wonderful, more Orc/Dog men! Spear chucking' fools :(

Now Link goes back to the first house.

There's a Wolfmen® in the corner, and a strange octopus women below. Link goes down the stairs and talks to the octopus...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-5383168.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6GwLoHiZaE)

Turns out, it's not an octopus women afterall :(. But that's alright, now Link has a mission, to unfreeze the fountain. Link uses the key and leaves via the bottom right door.

And now Link's dead! Our first (but definitely not last) death. Turns out, those baboons can not be killed by sword, but only by fireball... of course that can't be found in Nortinka, so Link must go back to the main map and find a place that does.

Next up, Crater Cove!

To be Continued...........

02-14-2009, 11:37 PM
Why would you even do this to yourself?

02-14-2009, 11:42 PM
Why would you even do this to yourself?

For our entertainment; why else?

02-14-2009, 11:42 PM
Trying to take OctoPrime's title of "Guy who LP'd the worst game here (http://www.gamespite.net/talkingtime/showthread.php?t=6790)" are you?

I can't tell if this is brave or foolish.

I guess there's no reason why it can't be both.

Octopus Prime
02-15-2009, 12:47 AM
It's broolish. Definitely broolish.

02-15-2009, 09:08 AM
Nigh-unrecognizable though they are, those "dog/orc-men" are Moblins, the same guys who toss spears at you in Zelda 1 and 2.

I know "who" they are, but "dog/orc-men" is funnier in my eyes :)

In any case, now that it's not 2 AM, let's go on with the show!

We are now in Crater Cove, which if you can't tell from the map is full of FIRE, so it'll be a good place to collect some fireballs.

See, a volcano! Now let's go into that hut and see what's inside...

Locked! Great, need another key. Link now moves left to see if there's another key.

All that work.... Alright...

Now with that out of the way, let's go back to that hut.

Alright, an old women with a knife. Seems safe to me!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-5728576.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7MFdoxTeQA)

Okay! Secret key! Pretty sure we could have just used the last one on that door then, but whatever! But before we go through that wooden door, let's see what's in the other hut (the one above the last key).

Shit! Crabs!

An old man with his crabs... wait... nevermind, let's talk to him.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-5724515.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85hTPs-QtSM)

If you could figure out that cutscene, you're a better person than I because I have no idea what the fuck was going on there. But in any case, we now have the POWER BLAST SWORD®.

Just like the other (real) Zelda games, it only works if you have full health... which is not very often in this game, so it's kinda useless. But hey, at least we have it now, even if it was for very arbitrary reasons.

Let's go inside...

02-15-2009, 09:15 AM
I love how Link explodes when he dies.

02-15-2009, 09:48 AM

Now we are inside the cave and see a shit load of Fire Dairas.

They can't be killed by normal sword, so it's time to get the snowballs out!

Crap, one's running right at me!

Guess he does not care about me, his loss I say!

As we can see... there is nothing else to do here, its only purpose was to collect fireballs. Now we go back to the main map.

It's now directing us to Spearfish Falls, so let's go there.

Wait, Blue Wolfmen®? What are they doing here? Whatever, let's continue.

Great, I need a bomb to blast the rock away, and I don't have any! Have to head to the store first.

A quick trip to Goronu

02-15-2009, 10:01 AM
Trying to take OctoPrime's title of "Guy who LP'd the worst game here (http://www.gamespite.net/talkingtime/showthread.php?t=6790)" are you?

That way lies madness.

This could be hilarious. Carry on.

02-15-2009, 10:14 AM

Now before we go back to Spearfish Falls, let's go back to Nortinka and defeat those baboons!

Well, that was easier than I thought.

We slowly work our way up the mountain, untill we reach Ipo

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-5738001.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0Um3d-yiWY)

Okay, now we know of his purpose. Guess that could come into use later. :\

Now the map places us at Toyku Lighthouse.

Hey! Another key! Better collect that.

The Bat Man-faced bats would have made more sense here, but this game is not about logic, so whatever. Also, speaking of logic, what the hell? There were no Orc/Dog men outside, why would one walk in here?

2. We now see what looks like a tied up women, better help her out!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-5742609.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cl2sAYiIQ8s)

Guess she was not tied up, but it looked it to me

Looks much thinner there too, but I digress

02-15-2009, 10:25 AM

Gotta get across that bridge!

BIRD RAPE! (Part 2)
This happened 5 fucking times, this game gets brutal.

Finally we get inside, only to find Dairas about to rape me (again), let's get rid of this scum!

They even pop out of thin air!

Well, now we reach the old man, who is fine with those Dairas living with him I guess.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-5746646.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhGfCRGwPuk)
Yes! A lantern! This will come in handy because of the arbitrary dark areas coming up.

To be continued (whenever I make more footage) :-)

02-15-2009, 10:38 AM
This could be hilarious.

No, it already is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85hTPs-QtSM&fmt=18).

02-15-2009, 11:04 AM
This is... this is astounding.

And yet, in the same way that the eye tends to pick out the single mustard flower growing in the coal scuttle... there's something here. Some sort of ambition. There was a group at work here, maybe no more than a few people, who thought at the start that they could actually make a great new Zelda game, using this great new technology.

I wonder at what stage in development those few people just decided to give up.

Probably when they were unable to convince the animation team that "Faces Of Evil" didn't refer to Link.

I await the next update with morbid fascination... but please, for your sake, tell me that you're already halfway finished this game.

02-15-2009, 11:14 AM
I await the next update with morbid fascination... but please, for your sake, tell me that you're already halfway finished this game.

I think (and I'm only going on a hunch here, since I've never beaten it) I'm about 1/3'ed of the way through it.

It's a pain to figure out what to do, since the game likes to throw you into random locations, and interact with random people who tell you about places YOU CAN'T GO TO. This game's logic goes out the window on nearly every screen.

But I can understand why you would see something in those screens. This is one of the better games for CD-I... and that says a lot about those other games, because this one is TOTAL SHIT. The controls are horrific, the hit detection is non-existent, enemies pop out of no where, and the cutscenes... wow...

On any other platform, this game probably would have never been released. And yet, when put next to the other (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTSq0LQenBo&feature=channel_page) great (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj-XjeXBbyg&feature=channel_page) classics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wOULJecH1A) on CD-I, this is truly a "game". You can "play" it, and "beat" it, there is a real ending. Those other games? Yeah... the less said, the better (until I LP them too, in which case I'll say more)

02-15-2009, 11:20 AM
I have only heard the legends of these games, never seen them in action. Just wow.

02-15-2009, 02:24 PM
Yes! A lantern! This will come in handy because of the arbitrary dark areas coming up.

It's not arbitrary, it's because there's evil about!

Octopus Prime
02-15-2009, 02:37 PM
It's not arbitrary, it's because there's evil about!

Whole faces of it, it seems!

02-15-2009, 03:10 PM
No, it already is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85hTPs-QtSM&fmt=18).

You make a good point

02-15-2009, 03:22 PM
I have only heard the legends of these games, never seen them in action. Just wow.

Ditto. The animated gifs showing just how spastic the animation is was a nice touch.

Look at him go!

02-15-2009, 03:32 PM
The "Faces of Evil" are the characters in the cutscenes, right? Especially that woman...

02-15-2009, 04:01 PM
The "Faces of Evil" are the characters in the cutscenes, right? Especially that woman...

I wish they were, the game would be much easier and less frustrating if that were the case.

Anyway, I literally JUST beat the game. It took me, in total, around 5 hours to get through the game, and that's mostly because I had to redo parts OVER AND OVER again because of the bullshit controls/AI/Backgrounds/EVERYTHING. This was, by far, the most frustrating game I've ever played.

I'm going to start hacking away at the footage, it should all be up soon enough.

02-16-2009, 04:10 AM
Hardcore Gaming 101's got a piece on this (http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/zeldacdi/zeldacdi.htm) (as you'd expect). It explains some of the design decisions and is pretty interesting.

02-16-2009, 05:16 AM
Hardcore Gaming 101's got a piece on this (http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/zeldacdi/zeldacdi.htm) (as you'd expect). It explains some of the design decisions and is pretty interesting.

What I got from reading that was that if I ignored

The movies
The voice overs
The fact CD-I was not really designed as a game system
The "learn to master" controls

Then I could enjoy this game.

I will give him the fact that the games are not the worst ever created, and are in fact really good on the CD-I... on CD-I... on CD-I... on CD-I... This is the most important factor, they are on a system with REALLY SHITTY GAMES. When you place them next to the huge lineup of crap that Philips released, then they look fine. But that's not an excuse for the fact they are poor games on their own. As I said before, if these games were released on ANY other system (with or without Link or Zelda's name attached), then they would have gotten railed against even more. But because of the platform, they are not as bad... but that does not mean they are "good".

With the controls; is it the developers fault that CD-I only had 2 real buttons? No. But should that excuse them for the fact that hit detection (be it jumping from platform to platform, or hitting enemies) are so off that you will have to repeat levels over and over again because bullshit that happens at the end of one, I'm sorry but I'm going to draw the line there.

Also, I call bullshit on the music. Sure, it's not "totally" bad the first time through... but when you are repeating levels (like Ganon's), it will drive you fucking crazy. But I digress.

If this person had fun with the game and thinks it's good, than I'm not going to say their opinion is wrong. Sure, I don't know where it's coming from, or if we played the same thing, but if they think it's fine, than so be it.

On a side note: I'm going to post another update tonight, just have to keep hacking away at the footage (and be home from work ;-) )

02-16-2009, 07:28 AM
Anyone would think you weren't enjoying this...

02-16-2009, 08:07 AM
No, it already is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85hTPs-QtSM&fmt=18).

Is that Charles Martinet?

02-16-2009, 08:10 AM
Aside from the absurdly banal, nonsensical exchange, the best part is how Link just abruptly disappears at the end.

02-16-2009, 12:38 PM
Wow, this game is a masterpiece compared to those other games people have linked. That Phantom Express is pretty epic.

I like the prospect of a new Lego game this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtUroTQH5K8&feature=related) leads me to imagine.

02-16-2009, 08:21 PM

Next we are going to Firestone Lake

Fighting octopuses as we traverse over what seems to be a lake filled with urine :-\

Can't really tell if they are spitting rocks, or crap.

A little raft ridin'

First, we have to talk to Gwonam.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-7023075.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VARA_DlPBf0&feature=channel_page)

Alright, we (kinda) know what happened to Zelda now... don't know exactly how to use that information, but in any case, we get to use the lantern for the first time.

Alright, Don't exactly understand WHY we needed to do that, since the fire is GLOWING, but whatever. Also, why are there wheels of fire chasing me?

But as you can see near the bottom of that screen shot, there are some berries, let's see what they are.

Cool, we got Grapple berries! What do they do? I don't know! But I guess they will come in handy.

Reaching the bottom of the hill, there was a wheel o' fire blocking a ring.

Ahh, Fire diamond. Again, don't really know what that is used for at this point. But it may help at some point.

Back at the world map, the game directs us to our next location, Spearfish falls.

The flying enemies in this area look like fish, yet fly about like birds.

02-16-2009, 08:42 PM
Reaching the top of the hill, we come across a lake with fairies.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6829536.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7x-3VdRC78)

Nice, not only is my health refilled, but I get an extra heart! Sure, that whole "falling off and dieing" at the end was not great, but whatever.

Have to start climbing up the mountain again

We enter the cave, and see a dragon (with a detachable missile head) guarding a necklace.

After quick work of him, we continue heading up the mountain until we reach another house/cave.

Where we run into a witch.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6832438-1.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmIOmxdGY9g&feature=channel)

Also, I now feel it's time to make a statement:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6832631.png (http://hg101.classicgaming.gamespy.com/zeldacdi/zeldacdi3.htm)

Cheap shot, but I digress ;-).

We now go back to Toyku lighthouse to give the necklace back to the fake tied-up women.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6834581.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GshH9LIIF9c&feature=channel)

Alright! The canteen is REALLY important for the later stages. I can now keep a supply of "Water of Life" and refill my health. I wish they gave this item earlier in the game.

Next up, Serigon Caves

02-16-2009, 08:48 PM
I've been "lucky" enough to not only play this game (in fact, all of the CD-i Zelda games) but I've also seen them played start to finish in a live PARTY ENVIRONMENT and let me tell you: There is nothing more rocking than watching Link explode when you're eight beers in, and everyone starts screaming the best (worst?) cusses they can come up with.

You're doing an amazing job of capturing that experience. Bottoms up.

02-16-2009, 08:51 PM
This is the most heroic Let's Play since Legacy of the Wizard. I really have nothing else to say.

02-16-2009, 09:07 PM
I'm entranced by the disparity between the art styles of the in-game backgrounds (average-to-subpar renditions of typical PC adventure game graphics in the VGA era) and the cutscenes (raw, unmitigated horror).

02-16-2009, 09:26 PM
The Serigon Caves are not "too" hard, just more shit throwing baboons and Man-Faced bats.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6835958.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QS71uL_HVvI&feature=channel)

I guess I have to bring something back to her from Fortress Centrum, so that's where we'll go next.

As we move toward the fortress, we see new, red knight, enemies. We'll see them come up quite a bit in later areas.

Now inside the fortress, we can see what I like to call "man-handle hands", which can only be bombed.

Um... what's with that skeleton?

OMG! Zelda! I found her! The game is now over! I WIN!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6840293-1.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALsuKZjMpWc&feature=channel_page)

Ahh crap, should have known :-(
(Also note, on screen she is on the ground, let in the video she is on a bed, surrounded by curtains... yeah...)

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-7075296.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ijy1qBTqyok&feature=channel_page)

At least I got that damn Crystal, Now I can go back to that other women for that shield.

02-16-2009, 09:41 PM
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6834581.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GshH9LIIF9c&feature=channel)

Where was she keeping the bottle that it popped when she pulled it out. And... did she fondle herself?

I think I need an adult.

02-16-2009, 09:50 PM
Where was she keeping the bottle that it popped when she pulled it out. And... did she fondle herself?

I think I need an adult.

This image is loaded with all kinds of wrong.

02-16-2009, 09:59 PM
The IMMEDIATE switch from exuberant gratitude to sullen petulance at the end of the Power Glove video is reason enough on its own for this LP to exist.

Yes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmIOmxdGY9g&fmt=18). It's right up there with the Gohma scene. Just watch Link put on that glove, squeal, flex, and then become totally bored with the world right at the end.

02-16-2009, 10:02 PM

Turn your head and cough?

02-17-2009, 04:55 PM

Last we left off, we had to go back to the Serigon Caves to give Crystal of Reflection back to that Ice women.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6841152-1.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOzVEVPhgZQ)

She's very poetic :-\

By this point in the game, I'm lost. I don't really know what to do, so I go back to Gonoru and, instead of going into the store, I go RIGHT.

Which leads to this statue. Oh I wonder, how do I get inside? There has to be a way...

Oh I see, there was a rock blocking one of the teeth! This game gets tricky sometimes, let me tell you.

We run into Gwonam, who gives us more helpful hints.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6843197.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGOXhSjfwcA)

Wait a second, I totally killed that guy before! What the fuck is he doing back here! God damn it :-(

Alright, we have to kill him again. That's fine, whatever.

If any of you have seen the AVGN review (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43521.html) of this game, you may recognize the above screen as the area where he got stuck. He is right, unless you have a rope you are pretty much screwed... lucky for me, I have an excess supply of them, just in case ;-).

When we enter the door, we get another video:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6844105.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g6g16EAxbs)

What? A deep freeze? Who does he think he is, Kalgan? Also, the logic of that plan is stupid. He is going to freeze Link for a year? THEN he MIGHT help?

Anyway, we have to kick his ass... again...

A few fireballs later, and then...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6844694.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50NblU6WJxY)

For all that work we get...

A bell? Really? In truth, this is another useful item. It stops flying enemies so you can avoid them, but it costs 10 rubies per use and it does not last long, only a few seconds.

With this new bell in hand, we go off to a newly opened area, the Harlequin Bazaar

Hey! Gwonam's Back! Gotta talk to him!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6845680.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tyLXy7DxeY)

So if you lose, you get turned into a wolf... fair enough game, fair enough.

In this first area, pigs are your worst enemy

They are WAY to low to hit in most spots, and you can't jump over them without going up to the top level.

In any case, we now enter this weird mouth building.

Wolfmen® are here too! Also, purple ottomans are out for the kill!

02-17-2009, 05:17 PM

Guess where the door is to the next area... go on, guess! If you guessed "boarded up mouth", you lucky bastard! It took me five minutes to figure that out :-(

After going through the... um... wooden mouth, we enter another area I can't quite understand.

Guess where the exit is here!

If you guessed it's "heart", you win! Again, I could not figure that out, it does not look like a door.

We run into that damn pig again. He says we will lose... I agree, so I turned off the system for a few hours, before remembering that I had to finish the game.

More Man-handle hands

Not sure if there was a real way to beat him, but my way worked fine I guess.

Most people would say "what the fuck was that?", but by this point, it's par for the course.

But after entering the door, and running into the "wizard"... yeah...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6851874.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngPE9tABZd4)

It may just be me, but holy shit...

Not only was that fucking crazy, but I have to go get him something! I don't know what, but he needs something from me! Turns out, he needs the Ice crystal from Serigon Caves

How did I miss it before!

Now we have to go ALL THE WAY BACK to the damn Wizard.

Now we get the "magic lantern", which extends the time the lantern can be used. Again, it helps, but only so much.

Next, we head to Militron

Gwonam's back again, so let's talk to him

02-17-2009, 06:50 PM

Working our way back up (another) mountain, we reach another cave.

Hey, I've seen those guys before!

Those too! Good thing I'm above them!

The door is the stone face on the wall... what the fuck is with this game...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6865985.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qk-UrPUgqls)

Time to fight the blue knight!

Wait... he looks nothing like he does in the movie... Oh well. After hitting him over the head with my sword, he dies/explodes.

Now we get a "Winged helmet", which allows for bigger jumps provided you have enough rubies.

Next Stop: Shipwreck Falls!!

No lie, this really is a shipwreck.

Another women, this time I really hope she is tied up...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6870212.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFh3CxxpYF8)

Wrong again :-(

Next Update tomorrow!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6845680.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tyLXy7DxeY)

Oh, man, this just brought back a ton of memories. My first exposure to the CD-i games was in an old EGM, and this was one of the screenshots they used. Granted, it was 1993, so it was of much lower quality, but it was this exact frame of animation.

Besides this one, I can only remember two other shots: one of the world map, and one of another monster in a cut scene. They showed so little of the game that it actually seemed interesting!

02-18-2009, 07:07 AM

To be frank, that's just straight up weird. I love how after killing a pig that deflates afterwards, Link's first course of action is to pick up his shriveled and baloony corpse.

Golly indeed.

I remember feeling like I had died a little inside as a kid, knowing that there were 3 Zelda games out there that I hadn't played, and had no chance of playing. After reading this, and watching the AVGN review, I feel sick inside. Link, you poor bastard. At least the CD-i mercy killing came quick.

Wait, her husband is a WHAT now???

The death animations are blowing my fucking mind. The deflated pig is amazing.

You know, I said I would update tomorrow... Quite a story about what happened there, but the short version is that I got a Powerbook (160) and was mesmerized by its trackball that I totally forgot about updating this.

We last left off with Link having to save that fat southern women's father, so this should not be too hard. Also, that jump over there is the first time we get to use our winged boots.

So there is our man, all chained up. Why? Best not to ask.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6871406-1.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCvBulccj5w&feature=channel_page)

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6871642-1.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci2Mg0dDZFE&feature=channel_page)

Now, some of you may be asking a few questions.

Why does he look NOTHING like his daughter?
Why do they both seemingly come from different time periods
Why in the hell does he have a anvil and hammer next to him? Did the people who put him in chains just LEAVE this stuff around? Why? It makes no damn sense.
Why did the women have a southern accent again?
Who am I? Why am I here?

I can't answer any of those questions, but this is what I can say is that he used my fire diamond on my sword. Now I can throw the sword, even with low hearts.

WHY DID I NOT GET THIS SOONER! This powerup makes the game (slightly) easier.

Now we head off for Glutko

Look at the bottom right corner of that screenshot. Guess what? It's a Dodongo! I GET TO BOMB THE DODONGOS! As far as I know, this is the only part of the game where they are, but I'm going to make this moment last.

As we work our way to another "Face of Evil", there is a door near the face. Let's go inside shall we...

The developers really wanted to piss off EVERY nationality with this game.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6875099.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2atm5cFo-lM&feature=channel_page)

Take that all in...
At least he gave us (slightly) useful information. We can't kill the Glutko (which I had no idea I wanted to kill anyway, not until this "scene") with the sword, but with some item (Hint: Bomb).

As we go right and work our way to the Glutko, Gwonam comes back.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6991516.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckddUVW5Acs&feature=channel_page)

If only they found that German guy, they would have enough food for a week!

GLUTKO! ATTACK ATTACK! KILL KILL! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kCPvZ7aQw0&feature=channel_page)

A quick bomb throw later and...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6992079.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMG5uafbFh0&feature=channel_page)

Now with that done, we keep on going right...

Then up yet another mountain side...

Another one? Really game? I made clips (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SSVA72JgTo&feature=channel_page) of it getting blown up, but it's the same damn thing as before. Why bother fighting the first one then? What was the point other than to annoy the game player more?

In any case, we get a nice prize for beating him...

02-21-2009, 06:24 PM

Now we can go back to Ipo and figure out what's in the secret verse (there may have been other information in that book, but that's not important right now)

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6993833.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4f3-ajdWx00&feature=channel_page)

So the only way I can kill him is with the book? Not with some awesome fire/ice/lightning/other element weapon, but with the book? Right.

We now head to Lupay, where our favorite magic carpet guy Gwonam is hanging out.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6994199.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pq9Jc3AGtk&feature=channel_page)

Alright, let me get this straight: The wolfman women thing turns people into evil pigs (Even though they howl before the transformation), and the evil joker pig guy turns people into wolves... What the fuck... WHAT THE FUCK... WHAT THE FUCK!... Oh god, I think I'm turning into the Angery Video Game Nerd®, HELP ME PLEASE!

More mountain climbin'

More spider killin'

Now we are in a snowy cave for some reason or another.

Now with more Man-Faced bats!

But when we reach the top of this cave...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6995077.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKeaOzF9dHI&feature=channel_page)

HOLY HELL. I killed you already, WHY ARE YOU BACK! At least they gave the time to make a new cut scene for him.

But of course....

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6996341.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6YhSMJznSM&feature=channel_page)

Did the animators have some kind of furry inflation fetish? Am I missing something here?

Do we get anything for killing him? Nope! Not a thing! The only thing he does is open a way to Lupay.

02-21-2009, 06:39 PM
Alright, let me get this straight: The wolfman women thing turns people into evil pigs (Even though they howl before the transformation)

I always thought moblin faces looked like bulldogs.

02-21-2009, 07:00 PM
Now we reach Lupay:

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6996506.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNWE--W2Ce4&feature=channel_page)

So after standing there while his green shots of whatever bounced back to him/her, it dies.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6996921.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ0vs_5AwfA&feature=channel_page)

Weird how they explode, THEN have a cut scene. Also, that would have been a GREAT time for a wolf howl sound effect, not someone who sounds like are going to die.

But with this new item, we can now go directly to Gwonam's home, then go to Ganon and BEAT THE GAME! We are in the home stretch! First, we need to go to Hermit Flats

It's Gwonam! And he has one last thing to say to us...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-6997581.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be3RNjTwKGg&feature=channel_page)

Alright, time to kill Ganon! Off to Ganon's Lair!

Those winged bird things? Those are what (I think) Gwonam was referring to.

Where's Captain planet when you need him :-(

Now we get to the part of the game that took me the longest to get through. Now, lucky for me, I have been collecting items along the way that make this a little easier to get through, but if you do not stockpile rubies or miss a few items like the bell, this area is a LIVING HELL.

These flying birds are the worst. Unless you have the bell, they take four or five hits to kill, and they never leave the screen. Also, the red ants you see are damn near impossible to jump over!

As we enter the next area, we come across another man who we have seen before... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYK_LpJA4W8&feature=channel_page)

Does NOTHING I kill stay dead? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BGAalJiSfc&feature=channel_page)

Now we continue on to face Ganon...

02-21-2009, 08:17 PM
But first

Flying Snake platform time!

Just like the first room, those flying snake things are really annoying. They are really hard to hit, and can kill you pretty much instantly.

But after all that, the moment we have all been waiting for!

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-7001850.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fno7AzxQO9s)

Ganon! Time to throw the book at him!

If you noticed in that clip, I did die while killing him (just like the AVGN video). I had to go all the way back through the stage to finish the game.

There she is! For real this time!

We just ring the gong and...

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d159/innerlogic/vlcsnap-7003232.png (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t76PBtSGApg)

That's it! And as I say in the last video "I FUCKING DID IT!!!!1111!!".

Okay, with this game out of the way, I would and should be on my way to play Zelda: Wand of Gamelon. However, I want input for the next LP I do. First, I want to know if how I did this LP was any good, and second what game I should play through next.

But I don't want to do "popular" games on "popular" systems. I have a 3DO, CD-I, Atari Jaguar, and Sega CD/32x Combo, might as well get some use out of them. If anyone has any games they would like to see from those systems, post here or PM me and we'll see where it goes from there ;-)

02-21-2009, 08:43 PM
Zelda: Wand of Gamelon, natch. As much as I'd love to see the sheer, brutal horror that is the rest of the CD-i library, this LP was wonderful and I'd like to see the follow-up to it at some point as well. After that... Hotel Mario, perhaps? My knowledge of bad games is sadly limited. :]

In any case, great job! Congratulations on surviving the gauntlet, you brave, foolish man.

02-21-2009, 08:59 PM

That was epic. I would love to see the other two Zelda CDi games, and I think you did it the right way. The truly horrible cut scenes are the gems of the LP, with your descriptions of the horrid gameplay being the meat. To further mangle this metaphor, we need both the journey and the pitstops to reach the destination. Uh, or something.

Anyhow, great job! Looking forward to the next one!

02-21-2009, 09:01 PM
Awesome job chronicling an abysmal game! I'm eagerly awaiting the Wand of Gamelon.

02-21-2009, 09:07 PM
Awesome ending video.

I'm so glad I never have to play this game. Although now I'm terrified a supervillain will read this post and kidnap my mom and offer to return her only if I play it, because man, I would really miss my mom.

02-21-2009, 09:08 PM
That was awesome, and if you have Merlin Racing, I demand it be your next LP. With copious coverage of its introduction.

I would love to, but considering it's on the Nuon and it's a somewhat rare game that's probably not going to happen.

I direct you back to the systems I posted before, as I own them. Also, I have access to full ISO sets, so I have nearly all the games for them (except Jaguar, I don't have the CD addon and probably never will. If it's a cart then it may be possible, depending on cost.)

EDIT: Instead of double posting, I'll just edit this one. Thank you all for enjoying my suffering! Since I've never really done anything like this, I did not know how it would turn out; but hey, I'm really glad you all liked it :-D. I just figured I would do something different than just a normal RPG or "Good" game.

I have other cut scenes and GIF's that I did not/could not post that I may upload here if anyone is interested. Since all of the cut scenes are allready on youtube (at least from what I've seen anyway) you could just watch that, but I like them separated out for easy access and linking here.

That's it! And as I say in the last video "I FUCKING DID IT!!!!1111!!".

Did you make that ending video yourself? One of my favourite cover versions of all time (the entire Stubbs the Zombie soundtrack is excellent that way ... except for that Dandy Warhols one, guh), and the wizard's lip movements synced up perfectly with the lyrics in that section. Brilliant.

This was an amazing Let's Play. I keep tabs on them all, but this was the first one I had to show other people at work. The videos. Dear, sweet $DEITY, the videos.

Thanks for the entertainment, and I'm sorry for the permanent brain damage.

The music video part I did make yes. I did it just because I figured that, while I had all those clips loaded up, I might as well use them for something. Also, I like it at the end of Ashens
(http://ashens.com/) videos he usually throws in some weird video at the end of the "normal" one, and I've wanted to do something like that for awhile.

Also, Cake is an awesome band :-D

Ohhh yeah, I forgot which rare and stupid CD-based system Merlin Racing was actually for. Sorry about that. (I did say "if you have it"...)

Don't be, I was not trying to say you were in the wrong. I looked on ebay for a Nuon and they don't have any (apart from some for parts). Again, I would really like to, but since I can't get one (and the fact the games are probably copy protected), it's a no go at the moment.

02-22-2009, 09:39 AM

What made your LP awesome vs. just watching clips on youtube is the context and your comments. If you want to do some bonus content with omitted clips (I'm assuming this is if you lose a boss battle or go the wrong way or something), I say go for it! But only if it's interesting to you. :)

02-22-2009, 10:59 AM
Speaking of music videos, this is a pretty kickass remix (http://www.somethingawful.com/d/flash-tub/zelda-cdi-remix.php).

02-22-2009, 01:41 PM
I noticed that the nondescript NPCs of Whatever Land are all identical. Too much inbreeding in Whatever Land.

They look like hobbits to me.

THE Hobbit (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077687/), in fact:

This was hilarity. Awesome job!
