View Full Version : Week 2 Alt: Punch-Out!!

Get your fisticuffs on, ladies and gentlemen. Those of you who prefer not to talk about Metal Gear Solid 3 and its slow-ass, pretentious gameplay may instead revel in the merriment of punching dudes. All versions are game here, whether the final bout is against Mike Tyson or merely the uninteresting Mr. Dream.

The tolling bell you hear means the first round has begun.

you're a winner, parish.

let me start by linking ocremix's punch out tracks (http://www.ocremix.org/game/punchout/), all of which are great.

man, when i was a kid, i had the official nintendo punch out calendar. it was awesome.

I'll be emulating this one, using my PS2 controller. The control setup? The right analog stick to move/dodge, and L3 and R3 for the punching.

I <3 emulation.

...piston fucking honda. when i was a kid, he kicked the ever loving crap out of me. its a real pleasure to put a fist between his damned blinking eyes, let me tell you.

I never found Piston Honda to be all that difficult. You could basically fight him the same way you'd fight most of the other boxers in the game, by dodging their attacks and then countering when they're stunned. I had a lot more trouble with people like Don Flamanco or King Hippo that needed a trick to defeat.

Of course, once you know their tricks, they go down like bitches.

That's funny, I played this game last night before realize it was the week 2 alt. I made it up to the second Piston Honda fight, but he beat me and I was too annoyed to try a second time. I'll probably throw down again and see if I can't at least make it to Sandman before getting whomped.

Man, this game is still really fun after all these years. I do get a bit annoyed when I run out of hearts, though.

I still have my punchout calander. I'll see if I can scan it in 2 parts. It's too big to fit on my scanner.

I'm off to scan!

Edit: Ok it didn't fit on the scanner. but, I was able to take a picture with my digital camera. Sorry about the flash.

Some of my favorite things about this game as I am playing it:

1. Stereotypes
2. pressing select between rounds for a pep talk
3. The sound the coach makes when he is talking
4. hilarious things the opponents say
5. censoring the Russian and making him addicted to soda
6. the way the guys wobble to the canvas as they fall (classic)
7. King Hippos paints falling down
8. N**ga stole my bike (I feel bad, like it's racist but damn if that clip isn't funny)

call it a guilty pleasure

The single best thing about Punch Out!!! is the music that plays on the password screen. It is one of the top 5 greatest video game songs ever.

I am NOT talking about the internet racist version.

This is the only way I have ever beat Mr. Dream/Tyson. I did it once and decided that was good enough for me. Never TKO'd that dude.

what version?

I assume the ytmnd.com version. I'd go and find it on there, but that site is kind of a mess when you're trying to find one thing in particular.

Great choice for the fun club this week! I'll be sure to play a little some time for sure. This is a game I have played a lot every couple of years, so I probably won't delve too deeply into it this time. Although, maybe I should try to finally KO Mr. Dream!

Yeah the version I was talking about was the YTMND version.

I'll post it but only with 2 warnings

1. it's pretty racist
2. it will ruin that song for you forever

it would be a lot funnier if it was like "that guy stole my bike" and I didn't have to feel all racist every time I watch it.

so here it is for the few that missed it as an internet phenomenon

What are those cards from?

What are the two cards with all of the holes in them? Are you to put your fingers through and make it look like Glass Joe is some sort of anatomical freak? I don't get it.

Those are from the Topps Nintendo trading cards from the late 80's (88 or 89 I think). Those spots aren't holes, they're silver stuff you can scratch off in order to win some stupid game. It wasn't a contest with a prize or anything, it was just a card contained game that I don't remember the rules to. I did used to have the whole set of those cards though.

08-13-2007, 11:07 AM
Perhaps my memory is wrong since it's been a long time, but I believe the rules for each of those game cards were located on the backside of them. They were always sorta like "scratch off three punches before you scratch off 2 KO's to win." But winning never really meant anything. For some reason I didn't want to "waste" them so I never got around to scratching any of them off. Unless I had doubles, but I never had money to buy them so I only ever got like 3 packs total.

I've got a SMB trophy myself; Mario fleeing a Bullet Bill.

Punch Out!! was always a bit too much for me in my younger days. Instead I coached my brother through the game. We both a got a laugh out of the comment about your controller dexterity when you beat Mike Tyson.

Still, I pine for the original arcade version. With it's large display and scaling graphics, Bald Bull really seemed to bear down on you. Plus, A nice cameo by Donkey Kong in the audience. Who knew DK loved the sweet science?

Yeah, I was wondering if there was actual playing going on as well...

I had previously made it up to Soda Popinski on my Wii save file, but decided to start fresh last night. I got up to Bald Bull, and even though I did knock him down once from his "Bull charge" he KO me in the end.

Cheers,
Ben

TheSL
08-15-2007, 08:35 AM
I think Bald Bull would be much harder if I didn't have the sound on- thanks to the audio cues from his charge I'm usually able to counter him about 95% of the time. Actually, that whole circuit is pretty easy for me these days- I even took down Great Tiger before he could use his "randomly teleport in circles for awhile" thing on Monday.

Does anyone else get really annoyed by the second match with Don Flamenco? Its not like he's incredibly difficult or anything, but the match always seems to move so slowly since he's always wearing you down with incessant blocking.

Stephen
08-15-2007, 09:37 AM
Does anyone else get really annoyed by the second match with Don Flamenco?

YES! I can beat him taking only a hit or two, but it always takes two full rounds to TKO his ass. He's a heck of an efficient blocker. The whole game seems easier than I remember. I'm only having trouble with the child eater himself, who is kicking my ass over and over.

Anonymooo

I still can't pass the second Piston Honda fight. I can survive most anything in Super Punch-Out, but plain ol' Mike Tyson's Punch-Out requires you to fight like a man, without that sissy ducking/blocking nonsense. XD

And now, I shall go back to playing MGS3. I really liked the two choices for Fun Club this time around.

MCBanjoMike
08-15-2007, 09:32 PM
Woo! I finally managed to put down Popinski, then I cleared the second fights with Bald Bull and Don Flamenco to boot. Sandman was the end of me this time, but now that I remember his trick (body blows after the first punch) I might be able to take him down next time.

So, who's your favorite? Little Mac, or the guy with the weird hair and bug eyes from the sequel that EA decided was also Little Mac when they put out that GC Fight Night game with him as a ridiculous hidden character? Also, why is Mac not a character in Smash Bros.? His back story is "guy who hurts other guys that are bigger than him," so he should be a natural choice, right?

I don't know about you guys, but after getting whomped by Sandman again I've decided to move up to Super Punch Out!! I find the control is better, the action is more varied and the difficulty ramps up more fairly. I even beat the first of the Bruiser brothers last night in a fair fight! Previously, I'd never done that without save stating my way through the fight (just to see if it was possible, you know).

Of course, now that I can get to Bruiser #2, I'm finding that he's a real sombitch. Still, the whole thing seems more fair than the ridiculous Tyson fight (90 seconds of instant death if you miss one dodge!). I still hold that Punch Out!! is a great game, even after all this time, but I think that I personally enjoy the sequel even more.

So, what's next week's alt game? I sadly won't be playing BioShock for at least another month or two.
