Food Fun Club 2 Veggie Selection

To make up for the oh-so pedestrian and unexciting meet choice we're going exotic with this month's vegetable.

It's like a potato that tastes like celery and can be used to take the place of either in many dishes.

Have fun and good luck.

What kind of godawful abomination is that?

it's fucking great in a raw salad with strips of green apple, that's what.

I have a feeling I won't be able to find this in my town.

Yeah, I have never seen or heard of it.

So that's what a dead persimmon looks like.

Rutabaga or turnip would make a nice substitute for this for those who can't find it.

I've read the name before, but I don't know that I've ever seen it. How much does it taste like celery? Mrs. Match despises celery, although it's possible that it's more the stringy nature of celery that bugs her than anything else.

Wait, so is this the same thing as "celery root"? I'm pretty sure I used that in a dish within the past year, though I can't remember what it was. And yeah, it pretty much tastes like celery despite being a different plant altogether.

I'd say it has a more earthy flavor than celery, on account of how dense and starchy it is. It has that same herbal quality, though.

Yes, celery root is the same thing. Whole Foods sells them, or so says my coworker who used to work at one. I never shop at Whole Foods, but I'll probably swing by to find a few of these.

It's up there with Jicama in terms of delicious hybrid root vegetables.

I'mma whip up a slaw out of this.

It will be FINE.

If all goes well, this weekend I will get a bit of celeriac into my life. I'm thinking about a hearty stew with celeriac, other root vegetables, and salt pork for flavoring, served over rice.

This weirdo elitist ingredient choice was my fault and I accept responsibility for this sad deflation of thread series potential.

We should reboot this, with a more open-ended and less Iron-Cheffy approach. And I'd be happy to moderate it, if Loki has indeed been scared away by my armchair backseat mismanagement.

In any case, I believe celeriac is now way out of season.

Ohh my god I didn't even notice there was a Food Fun Club. I am all over this.

A reboot is definitely needed! (I'm still up for a celeriac dish, by the way - off-season or not; I've been gastronomically depressed for the past one and half months (hence, no cooking), but I'm willing to go back to my usual state of culinary enthusiasm).
