Default At MY Wits' End: Let's Play The World Ends With You

WELCOME! To the most flawed game I can think of that is still in my instant recommend pile.

This game. This DANG game. I... I have the worlds strongest love hate relationship with this disgustingly broken work of art. But, rather then just rant endlessly on its shortcomings, and then try and convince you to still play it for some ungodly reason, I figure I may as well spare you the pain and show you first hand all it's perfect flaws. So, come join me on this magical adventure of douchy anime protagonists, obtuse controls and game mechanics, and a bigger middlefinger plot then Lost. SO MUCH FUNTIME GOODNESS! XC

A Little Background:
Square Enix relaesed this game to the unsuspecting American Public in April 2008, herolding its unique use of the ds, and all that comes with that mantle. A very... unique... ActionRPG, TWEWY is set in modern Tokyo's Shibuya Shopping district, and featuring a wide cast of quirky anime angst, this game is most remembered for its lens into Japanese Popculture. That, and its crazywild combat system. Trust me, you'll hear plenty more on ALL of how this eats me to the core as we go!

Rules:
Really, all I care about is tagging your spoilers. Because really, eff this game, but if you REALLY want to wade through its bullcrap, well, you should be allowed to.

So this is going to be a screenshot lp, punctuated by the games limited comicbook style cutscenes. I'm undecided if I should link the game music, as it is really a key part of the atmosphere, yet also kind of sucks and is annoying. As all DS vocal tracks are. I'll try and update every week or so, and early on it should go chapter by chapter. I'll be cutting out battles, shopping, and anything else I find obnoxious yet not integral. I do NOT care to be a perfectionist, but if you know of something I should show off, let me know, I'll see what I can do!

So there you have it! Without further ado, LETS GET ON WITH IT!

Your cover image is kind of tiny. Instead of attaching it, possibly find an image host and embed it or whatever the technical term is.

Also, I don't know what you're talking about this is the best DS game.

Oh, well then, let me fix that!
Also, I recognize that it is a gem of a game! Just... diamond in the rough... reeeeeeeaaaaally rough...

Will you not be showing anything about the battle system and what not?

I will explain it in all it's glorious confusion! AAaaaannnddd.... then quickly forget it exists, pop my helpers on auto, and only bring it up when we see a new monster, or during bosses. And no, I wont really be talking much about it beyond mechanics.

If you don't particularly want to explain it, I can do so just as well. I've played this game enough to know how it works.

Nah, I get it, I just don't like it! The whole point of this thread is me, tearing this beautiful wreck a new one, knitpicking it apart, and giving it some much needed exposure. But thanks for the offer!

By the way, it's almost a crime that the title quote isn't "I'm not brave enough to wear this..."

Default Day 1, Part 1

Aaaannnnndddd It begins! Alright, first cutscene. I can't capture video, and seeing as how their aren't many of these in the whole game, I figured a quick youtube link will suffice. Stop at the 1:50 mark, lest you be spoiled

Outta my face. You're blocking my view.

Shut up!!! Stop talking. Just go the hell away!

All the world needs is me. I got my values... so you can keep yours,
all right?

I don't get people. Never have. Never will.

Ain't he a charmer! Really, this game starts with it's best foot forward

!? What the... I can hear voices in my head! (What just happened?)

(And where'd this pin come from?) Hmm... (Wonder if there's a
connection...)

(This pin... Why do I have it?)

Oh yeah, quick interruption about how text works! (thought) Not thought. We good?

And a quick poke...

And some blue idiotic drivel! Honestly, I'd hate to be the guy's writing this stuff. There are HUNDREDS of npc's that say just the most random crap out there. THIS is why I don't have a twitter. Here, need some more examples?

-Jupiter of the Monkey rocks!
But do the shop attendants really have to rap when talking to customers

-I'm gonna try making my own scent: the smell of cute! People will love it!

-If I go to the beauty salon now, I'll fall asleep while they're shampooing me.
Shame I can't go… That stylist is a total hunk.

Let's agree upfront mind-reading is a lame superpower and move on, shall we?

(Voices! Definitely voices! But why?) ! (Am I hearing people's
thoughts!? What the hell IS this pin?)

! Huh? Whose phone? Mine? "Reach 104. You have 60 minutes. Fail, and
face erasure. --The Reapers." Oh, that's cute. See ya, spam. Deleted.

Huh? Still there... It's like junk mail from hell.

Oww! My hand... Huh?

!? What?

Curiouser and Curiouser...

Ok, no, curious went out the window, this is straight up trip'n

! F...frogs!?

Oww! What the... They attacked me! What do they want with me? D-down froggie...

Sick! First battle! Ok, yeah, moving... gotcha...

Ok, and how to escape! Aright, let's kick some toad tooshie!

Wait...

You want me to what?

Yeah, the game just expects you to run from the first fight, so... off to a great start!

I'm dead serious, they just unlocked these 2 things as abilities... way to go... you can run, and run away. Gold star Neku

...Ungh! What the hell is going on!? Somebody! Help!

Hey... Everybody stop ignoring me!

Maybe if you didn't act like such a asshat and tell people to "Shut up" or "Get out of my way", they might LISTEN

What is this place...

Crap! I gotta run!

Opening cinematic time! Enjoy!

And here ends update one! The 25 picture limit is going to put a damper on the intro, and how I do conversation may change later. I'm still working that all out, as always, feedback and suggestions are more the welcome. I hope you enjoyed part one!

This game is so, so good.

And for what it's worth, you're probably preaching to the choir a little. The World Ends With You has a pretty solid bloc of fans here. With that said, for that reason I think it'll fit right in.

edit: You can also embed youtube videos as well, just paste the final string (in this case, MRSXPNdWmqQt=1m48s) in between tags

Thanks for the Youtube protip! Glad to know this game will fit in... Let's hope some people can convince me why I seem to like it/work me through it's Stockholm syndrome.

I'm interested in hearing why you think this game is so flawed--I didn't find the systems any more obtuse than most other games, and am now reminded that I'd really like to replay it at some point.

I could never get into this game no matter how many attempts I made. Always meant to give it another try, but it's sitting on my desk right now because I just pulled it from my DS game case in favor of EO Untold.

Alright, got that taken care of! Thanks again for unlocking!
Because of this, I think I need to get a counter for how long inbetween updates, see if they level up. BECAUSE THAT MECHANIC IS FUN RIGHT?!

No, you should keep a counter of every time something is referenced that hasn't been explained yet. If that were a drinking game, no one would live past the first day. Peru sure that count's already at, like, 3 or 4.

It's called foreshadowing? Can you spoil mechanics? Meh, either way I probably should stop that! :/

Yes, but this game foreshadows everything. Possibly the only not great part of it.

Also I just noticed my phone auto-corrected "pretty" as "Peru". Whoops!

ON IMAGES: You are upscaling using a method that causes blurriness. I don't know what utility you're using, but it probably has an upscale option that preserves the sharpness -- just make sure you're using some multiple of the original resolution (2x, 3x, 4x). Along the same lines, you're using JPGs, which are really bad for images with low color depth. Try PNG.

On the one hand, yes, this is kind of nitpick territory. On the other, it makes a huge difference in the readability of the LP.

It's true, we were all thinking it. Don't let this discourage you from making your LP, someone's always gotta play Image Police. Sometimes it's me!

By the way, for upscaling, the most common algorithm that gives good results is Nearest Neighbor. Again, your new size has to be an integer multiple of the original size.

What's funny is that the iOS version of this will, if you let the app do so, link up to your Twitter account and pull random tweets from your feed and make those the NPC thought dialogue during scanning.

It's really funny to hear John Fugelsang, Dave Weigel, or @TNG_S8 coming out of some random Japanese person's brain.

Un-Bolivia-ble!

I never played far into this game, so a good LP of it should satisfy my curiosity.

Oh wow! I never did play the iOS version... What would have been hilarious is if you could retweet the thoughts as in Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery...

Was twitter a big thing back when this game came out? Because all the npc dialogue(?) really seems to parody what it is today.

For good reason.

Well, it came out in '08. I don't know Twitter's history that well, but I think it was starting up around that time, wasn't it?
