Contras, Probotectors, and the legacy of war

I can FINALLY reveal my favorite feature! If you're gonna master this game you're gonna have to replay it, a LOT. And as good as the OST is, you'll get tired of it.

But the thing is - I hate your spotify playlist. I detest it. So I made you several playlists of my own. Operation Galuga has MULTIPLE SOUNDTRACKS.

Here is a tease of the one you've been waiting for, Retro Remix.

Both original OST and Retro Remix are currently also on your favorite music streaming platforms, if you are so inclined.

Y'all know that when I hear "retro remix" about a game series that started out on an arcade machine with a YM2151 I am necessarily going to get into curmudgeon mode because I knew without clicking what that actually meant for the soundscape, but I have to say I like what I'm hearin'

Konami was particular that any musical references should be to the NES and NOT the arcade. Not really sure why, but at least you can rest easy this was a purposeful thing and not oversight

I've genuinely wondered why so many games, particularly "looping" you-will-play-this-stage-multiple-times games have not gone the Smash Bros route with multiple tracks available for an area*. I am super glad to see it here. Always happy when a game acknowledges you might want to play it a lot.

* - Yes, I know more music tracks equals more development time/money.

I'll also say this since you can see it in a screenshot we released - you can also set it to "Random" for Challenge Modes!
(NOTE: Random only pools the mixes you have unlocked)

And this was spoiled on the Konami Japan site but
if you play the demo, you instantly unlock Contra 4's OST in the main game

Maybe you can guess why the LRG Limited edition soundtrack is 3 discs

I mean, I'd say I get it -- I think the majority preference for which one to play is vastly weighted toward the NES version for balance and aesthetic reasons, including the music. But when everybody makes that aesthetic choice it loses some of its emotional impact, and, even some 15-20 years on from when I started making music in the style, I think there's still a lot of unexplored timbral landscapes to be found in those FM chips.

More reveals for people who don't mind spoilers, apparently social media is going all out:

Doesn't look like iTunes has it. =(

They're hard to find because there's a million other results for Contra and they're not listed with any composer other than the name of the game. Searching for "galuga" was the only thing that worked.

With the judicial use of save states, I finally saw the credits roll on Contra Hard Corps and let Brad Fang become the werewolf king of the cavemen.

I made it through the first three stages on Story Mode. I do appreciate both this game and 4 dialing things back to the largely run ‘n gun fun of the early entries, as opposed to the “Oops, All Bosses” approach the series morphed into after Alien Wars. The shifting camera in the second stage fried my brain at first, but I mostly adapted by the end.

When I started the game I got some bonus credits for playing the demo, along with a Contra 4 ost option! How did I get that?

I just realized that not only are the figures exclusive to the "no way can I afford that" version of LRG's Contra: Operation Galuga set, but the art book, too.

I am cursing all manner of deities as we speak.

Beating the demo gets you 300 points and the WayForward mix
Early purchase should have gotten you 1000 points (if you are on XBox, you may need to update the game to see this)
Entering the Konami code
does a thing as well as awarding 573 points

Close but it looks like that was in March '73.

I think this is the real reason:
[573 is] known as the Konami number, since "ko-na-mi" is associated with 573 in the Japanese wordplay Goroawase

In that vein, I always loved how Contra 4 has a (really cool) tune for its jungle stage on Easy and Normal, then when you tackle it on Hard, you get the full-blown original jungle theme remix. I think it was the only stage in the game that did that kind of thing, but it was cool.
