The Tokusatsudome Nominations Thread!

To make a reference nobody is going to get, I'm going to master 2024 song nominations by the year 2024!

The theme of the new year- Tokusatsu! That's Japanese for special effects... and more functionally, that's weird nerd for "Japanese shows and/or movies with cool practical effects generally involving people in elaborate rubber suits with explosives strapped right to them that go off when they get kicked and stuff" and that still covers kind of a lot. Mainly though it's, Godzilla type things and superhero stuff. And you know, superhero stuff from Japan kinda hits different.

I am way, way into this sorta thing, and I recognize that the rest of you aren't, but you don't have to watch these to appreciate the music from them. Just looking at opening theme songs, skip through these here super-cuts!
Here's every Super Sentai show, the ones people hack to pieces to make Power Rangers.
Here's every Ultraman. You all vaguely know Ultraman, right?
Here's every Kamen Rider show. Those ones I'm particularly so into.
And Metal Heroes. That covers most of the miscellany. Of course there are still outliers like Zubat.

But that's just opening theme songs. There's also ending themes. Cool incidental stuff like particular character/power-up tunes. There's remixes. There's stuff that's not specifically from Japan. Power Rangers still counts, we all like that squeedly Bulk&Skull theme. Pacific Rim counts, no problem. Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog I guess but the music is terrible. Just about anything goes, really.

So... yeah, you know how these things go. Gimme a bunch of nominations. Like, 4 per person, maybe more if not a lot of people are on board. I'll mix in some obscure ones, we do the whole vote off thing. Since it's the end of the year and stuff's going on, take a couple extra days and let's arbitrarily say just arbitrarily say...

Get your submissions in by like, 6 AM Eastern or something, January 3rd.

Question: what about some animated shows that are super clearly either straight-up tokusatsu or tokusatsu deconstructions?

Purple

(She/Her)
I'll allow it! (to all of the above even)

... but I will silently judge people for watching Fuuto PI without having watched the original Kamen Rider W, and maybe shake a cane admonishingly.

Hmm... I am still pretty well rubber stamping everything in the interest of big brackets and fun for all, but so remember folks that I'm largely hosting this in the hopes of expanding horizons at least a little past the standard anime+videogames look at Japanese pop culture. Those shadows on the walls of Plato's cave are being cast by people in really elaborate costumes doing some impressive stunt work, you know?

1. Golden Knight Garo - Garo ~SAVIOR IN THE DARK~ (JAM Project)
2. Tomica Hero: Rescue Fire - Rescue Fire (JAM Project)
3. Garo: Makai Senki - Waga Na Wa Garo (JAM Project)
4. Garo: Divine Flame - WANDERERS (JAM Project)

Bonus nom in case more than four are needed (if not, disregard):
5. KIBA: Dark Knight Side Story - Worrier ~Yami o Kakeru Kiba~ (Hironobu Kageyama)

"Vaeran are you just using this as an excuse to make Talking Time listen to a bunch of JAM Project songs"

SHHHHHH, IT'S WORKING

Oh good. I realized after that opening post I hadn't suggested people check Garo out at all. Nicely covered.

For what it's worth, when the actual voting goes live, I am fully planning to work out/already be all too familiar with the context of everything in the dome and provide some brief contextual ramblings. So absolutely feel free to hit me with all your "I've never even seen this this song just rocks" picks.

it may be against the Octo Ethos, but i'm gonna have to set aside some time and actually Do Some Research for this

Little under 48 hours left if anyone wants to nominate anything. There's a rather awkward count as I write this (32 if I use every bonus suggestion and don't nominate anything myself), so, let's really fill this out and justify the next power of 2. If you have extras you didn't submit yet, toss'em in. If you haven't suggested anything, hurry up with it. There's still so much cool stuff out there you can toss in.

Last day to submit things everyone!

P.S. There's an all-girl cover band for a bunch of these.

out of desperation, i've opted to not do research and instead just go hog wild browsing youtube randomly (like the gods intended):

Kamen Rider Ryuki - Alive A Life
Kamen Rider Ryuki - Revolution
Jinzou Ningen Kikaider - Akuma Ga Kyou Mo Fue O Fuku
Daitetsujin One Seven - Oh!! Daitetsujin One Seven
Round ZERO ~BLADE BRAVE
Taiyo Sentai Sunvulcan
Tokuso Sentai Dekaranger
Swat on Dekaranger

no idea if i accurately named the series these are from or if i accidentally picked some ineligible j-rock

... I passed out super early from some sort of mystery fumes and lack of heat, so... everyone has an extra day (this one) for submissions?

The forum ate my draft from a week ago, so I'm glad for the extra time to try to recreate it!

Gosei Sentai Dairanger OP

Ninja Sentai Kakuranger ED - Ninja! Skyscraper Kids

Power of Love, Chroma Squad!

Kamen Rider Dragon Knight OP - I'm including this not because it's good -- it's really bad -- but I have a soft spot for the show because my sister was part of the film crew for the US version, and has told me a bunch of stories about the various cast members and such. Ryuki's better, but it's nice that they tried!

  1. Kaiketsu Zubat - "Hayakawa's Theme"
  2. Godzilla (1954) - "Attack Godzilla"
  3. Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still - "Charge! Issei and Yoshi" (this anime is a spinoff from a tokusatsu series so I assert it is a valid submission)
  4. Astro Fighter Sunred - "Forever Mizonokuchi" (ending theme)
  5. The Green Slime (1968) - "Theme Song" by Richard Delvy
  6. "Star Fleet" by Brian May And Friends (the puppet series "X-Bomber" is listed as being tokusatsu. it was dubbed in English as "Star Fleet" with an original theme song, and this is a cover of that theme song)
